Psalm 6

20/06/2022

Mark 2: The Lord Who Forgives Sins and Calls for Sinners
GK611 Morning Devotion
16/6/2022
Speaker: Ps Daniel Kew + Rev David Tan

Introduction:

Jesus said, “I came to call sinners. There is no righteous in the eyes of God, not even one, and everyone needs the Lord. Therefore, the Lord came to call all men and to save all men!

1. The healing and the forgiveness of sins of the paralytic (V1-12)

When Jesus saw the faith of the paralytic and the four friends who carried him, he said to him, “Son, your sins are forgiven. For Jesus knew what the real need of man was. The real problem of man is because of sin, and Jesus directly solves this problem.

The healing of the sick and the solution of the problem are only the symptoms; the only cure is the forgiveness of sins! The gospel is that our sins can be forgiven by the Lord Jesus!

2. The Son of Man loves sinners and calls the sinners (V13-17)

Jesus saw Levi the tax collector, a lonely sinner, in the crowd and took the initiative to call Levi, who ended up following Jesus and inviting all his friends to come and know him.

Tax collectors and sinners were despised by the general public, but the Lord was looking for them. The most troublesome people were the ones the Lord most wanted to reach and gain access to. Today the Lord is still looking for sinners to save and change their lives.

3. Religious leaders must hear the Lord’s teaching (V18-28)

Jesus loved the world, and certainly loved the scribes and Pharisees. Although He knew that these religious leaders opposed Him, He patiently answered their rebukes and let them hear the mystery of truth.

(1) Fasting is unnecessary when bridegroom is around (V18-20)

Jesus used the parable of the wedding to answer the Pharisees’ accusation that He had not told
His disciples to fast. It shows that when the disciples live in the presence of the Lord, they should enjoy joyful communion with Him ‘face to face’ without seeking Him through the ritual of fasting.

But in the future the bridegroom will leave, and then they will have to fast. The analogy is that the church is like a bride waiting for Christ, the bridegroom, to return at any moment to marry her. Before Christ returns, we must fast and prepare ourselves for the Lord’s return to sit with Him at the eternal banquet!

(2) The parable of the cloth and the wineskins (V21-22)

The old ideas of the Pharisees could not see or hear the new teaching of the Lord Jesus. Therefore, Jesus used the parables of the new cloth and the old garment, and the new wine and the old leather bag to illustrate that Lord is here to accomplish new things.

(3) The Sabbath was established for man (V23-28)

Jesus wanted the Pharisees to understand that the ‘essence’ of the law was more important than the ‘meaning of the word’. The Sabbath was established for man, and man was not established for the Sabbath. Therefore, the Sabbath was established with the focus on the good of man, not for the suppression of man.

Conclusion:

The Lord Jesus came into the world for no other reason than to save the world! However, the self-righteous religious leaders have heard the Lord’s teaching, but they do not hear and deny Him. We have heard the truth today, and we know that the Lord has a healing remedy, but do we take our medicine on time, or do we put it aside and not take it? To die of sickness without taking the medicine is a small matter, but not to trust in the Lord is the result of eternal destruction of the soul!

Mark 1: Jesus’ ministry in the world
GK611 Morning Devotion
15/6/2022
Speaker: Ps Stella Ling + Rev David Tan

Introduction: Mark’s gospel reveals that the Son of God, Jesus Christ, humbled himself to serve.

1. The Beginning of the Gospel (V1-8)

The gospel is the good news, which is Jesus. Therefore, when Jesus came into the world, He wanted to bring transformation, and He is the answer to all problems.

2. Overcoming Temptation (V9-13)

Jesus went into the wilderness for forty days, accepting Satan’s temptation and overcoming it, revealing that He is the beloved Son of God (V11). God also allows the temptations we face to reveal that we can experience victory through the Word of God.

3. Proclaiming the gospel of God (V14-15)

The “time is fulfilled” refers to the fact that the time was ripe to send His Son Jesus Christ to establish the Kingdom of God according to God’s plan of salvation. Here we find that Jesus was mindful of the timetable of God’s work, understood the mind of God, and knew clearly the purpose for which He had been sent into the world. The central ministry of the Lord Jesus, when He was sent to men, was to redeem them and restore their relationship with God.

4. Calling people to follow (V16-20)

Peter, Andrew, James and John, the four fishermen, had no special skills except fishing, and their nets and boats were their only means of support. However, when Jesus called them, they responded “immediately” and “followed”.

5. An example of service (V21-45)

(1) Preach the Word of God (V21-22)

Use the Word of God to minister to people and bring them back under the authority of God. We will find that Jesus’ teaching is from God and not by His own words.

(2) Casting out the unclean spirit (V23-27)

Although the unclean spirits know Jesus Christ as “the Holy One of God” (24), and they seem to give glory and praise to the Lord, the Lord Jesus refuses to accept the evil spirits as witnesses for Him, for the source of this witness is not of God. Instead of leading people to God, they would confuse them, confound what the Lord is and does, and blur the line between God and demons. Therefore, Jesus drove out the unclean spirits from men.

(3) Power to Heal (V28-31)

Jesus uses power to heal people so that they can rise up and serve. Jesus can heal the sicknesses of the body and the sorrows of the heart.

(4) Entering into rest (V32-39)

While men look to the needs of the flesh and immediate benefits, the Lord Jesus wanted to make men look to the mind of God more than the needs of the flesh, to pay attention to eternal things more than immediate benefits, and to bring them back to the eternal plan of God. Jesus withdrew into the wilderness, entered into rest and sought God’s heart.

(5) Graciousness and Mercy (V40-45)

The primary purpose of Jesus’ incarnation and ministry on earth was not to heal the sick and cast out demons, or to address man’s physical needs, but to proclaim the gospel of God. Nevertheless, He extended His hand of mercy to the leper who was desperately seeking healing, and healed him.

Conclusion:

Brothers and sisters, when we see Jesus’ ministry in the world, are we willing to respond to God’s call and learn to serve in the same way He did?

Isaiah 39: Showing off? — Over!
GK611 Morning Devotion
14/6/2022
Speaker: Rev David Tan

Introduction: Why do people hold ‘grand funerals’? Because they are rich, so they show off?

1. Reflection of escaping from Calamity (V1)

It is said here that after escaping from calamity, a great power of darkness came, which seemed glorious and good on the surface, but was a great snare. In the previous chapter, it was said that Hezekiah was dying of a terminal illness, but he cried out to God for healing, and God had mercy on him and gave him 15 more years to live. That’s what led to the subsequent corruption and the birth of the worst son, who became the most corrupt king, a series of problems.

To be able to pray and experience the miracle of healing is certainly a glorious thing. But if one does not grasp the testimony of living for the Lord, it is better to be called back to heaven at the best of times than to face the judgment with fear and trembling at the end of one’s days!

2. The king was pleased to see the messenger (V2)

There is an old saying that says: “Wealth must not be seen! It means that money and valuables should not be seen by others, so as not to attract disaster. It is used to advise people to take care of their money. King Hezekiah obviously committed this taboo, so he lost it all in the end.

Why did Hezekiah like to see the messenger? It is in human nature to be praised and flattered. Especially when one is really rich and powerful and has really great glory, one usually likes to be seen and praised by others. Be very careful whether such a state of mind is a sign of pride and self-aggrandizement. Understand that our God resists the proud and gives grace to the humble.

3. Man’s showing off takes away from God’s glory (V3-4)

Why did he show the messenger his abundant riches one by one? Because it was bound to be greatly flattered and praised by the messenger. How to show yourself really powerful, glorious, mighty, valiant, and strong as soon as you come —-. People will get carried away in the process, forgetting God’s grace, thinking they are great, and eventually robbing God of His glory. Forgetting that all achievements are the works and blessings of God. This is man’s sin, falling short of the glory of God.

4. Show-offs lose everything (V5-7)

God speaks very sternly through the mouth of the prophet about the consequences of boasting, not only in terms of losing everything, but also in terms of spilling over to future generations.
How many people today will think about the condition of their children and grandchildren?

We need to be serious about God so that our generations will be blessed.

Conclusion: O curse of the generations! (V8)

It doesn’t even matter if future generations are cursed! What kind of terrible mentality is this? How can you be so proud and yet so selfish that you don’t even care about your own children and grandchildren?

Isaiah 38: The Salvation of the LORD
GK611 Morning Devotion
10/6/2022
Speaker: Rev Moses Li

To give yourself a piece of cliff with no way back is to give yourself a chance to charge towards the heights of life. In the face of life’s adversities, do not compromise, but choose to be strong, which is the path of life.

1. Hezekiah’s cry in distress (V1-8)

(1) The matter of disease becomes the matter of death

The phrase “sick to death” indicates the decline of the king’s life. The Assyrian threat was lifted, and the nation of Judah seemed to be reborn; but the personal life of King Hezekiah was coming to an end.

(2) Trouble turns into opportunity for repentance

Hezekiah turned his face toward the wall, dejected, for he was still young and had left no descendants. He prayed humbly to God. He was not angry with God, nor did he ask God for healing, but only cried out in pain.

(3) Death becomes a promise of salvation

When the Lord saw Hezekiah’s tears, he had compassion on him and increased his life span by fifteen years, and gave him a miraculous sign, commanding the sun-dial to recede ten degrees from the shadow of the sun, which should have been moving forward. The receding of the sun’s shadow was a miraculous sign that no man could do, and when Hezekiah saw this sign, he believed in God’s work.

2. Hezekiah’s Prayer of Thanksgiving (V9-22)

(1) The day of noon becomes the gate of the gates of Sheol

V10 The gates of Sheol, original text refers to the grave. Man’s impotence, in contrast to God’s faithfulness. Man is powerless before death, he will perish, and he must not rely on the world! It is God who holds the key to life, so that man can pass through death and forgetfulness and recover, knowing that he should rely on God.

(2) The land of the dead becomes the land of the living

It is good for us to suffer, so that we may learn our lessons and identify with God, and not be side-tracked, so that we may walk in the right way.

(3) Tough things turn into music in the house of the Lord
The Lord will keep me in secret when I am in trouble, and hide me in his secret place, and exalt me on a rock. I will praise the Lord every day, and his holy name forever. The Lord is my strength, that I may walk steadily on high. My heart is full of beautiful words, and I ask for a teachable mouth and a pen of a ready writer, to proclaim the mighty works of God and the great virtues.

Conclusion:

Pray that God would help us to understand the value and meaning of life, for it is all God’s gift that we have the breath of life. Ask God to be in charge of our lives, so that we can live out the value of our lives with gratitude and trust.
