Proverbs 26: Don’t think you’re wise
GK611 Morning Devotion
23/12/2022
Speaker: Ps Daniel

Introduction:

In particular, this chapter brings out the behaviour of foolish people, and warns us not to ‘think we are wise’, lest we fall into the foolishness of pride against God and become even more hopeless than fools!

1. The fools without hope (V1-12)

(1) No honour but punishment (v1-3, 8)

The fool should not be given honour or fame, for it would add to their wrongs. What they need is punishment. Just as a beast is tamed with a whip and bridle, so the Singapore law has caning.

(2) Not making things better but worse (V4-7, 9-10)

The fool speaks foolish words. Though they may speak proverbs out of their mouths, they become destroyers of them. They are also unreliable, and when they are entrusted with a task, they will not only fail, but they will also bring harm to the person entrusted with the task!

(3) Foolish things are done and done again (V11-12)

The fools do foolish things, and do them again and again. So they are the ones who keep repeating the sins they have committed, repeating their foolishness, and still think they are wise, but instead they become the most hopeless fools of all!

2. Eradicate wisdom in your own eyes (V13-28)

(1) Stop being a lazy person in bed (V13-16)

A lazy person always has an excuse to lie in bed and spin and stay in bed, not wanting to get up and work. They think they are wiser than the seven wise men and can comfortably get something for nothing.

The true wisdom of God is that He who has a slack hand becomes poor,
But the hand of the diligent makes rich. (Proverbs 10:4); Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might (Ecclesiastes 9:10).

(2) Not doing evil in the name of a joke (V17-19)

Using flippant words to cover and justify one’s evil deeds, claiming that it was just a joke, shows that the person is an extremely treacherous person! Only a fool would make a joke about sin! Pray that we will know how to confess and repent of our sins and not become foolish treacherous person who cover up their sins.

(3) Do not spread your tongue to stir up disputes (V20-22)

A talebearer is always wishing the world in chaos, stirring up trouble and causing disputes, just like adding fuel to the fire and making a big deal out of a small matter!
There is power in words! The tongue of the fool brings great ‘harm’; the words of blessings of the wise bring great ‘edification’.

(4) Do not cover up resentment with deceitfulness (V24-28)

When there is resentment in your heart and you do not express it, you begin to lie to cover it up, which then turns into deceitful sweet talk. In the end, the heart harbours deceitful designs to harm others, but becomes a foolish person who hurts himself.

Conclusion:

If we want to have the ‘wisdom’ of Proverbs, then we need to have the prerequisite that we ‘do not think we are wise’. For Proverbs is not written to those who ‘think they are wise’, but to those who humbly want true wisdom!
Pray that God would help us to examine our hearts for the blindness of self-righteousness, and to seek God’s true wisdom to live victoriously!

Psalms 149: Welcoming the Lord’s Return with Lively Praise
GK611 Morning Devotion
22/12/2022
Speaker: IP Moses

Introduction:

Many signs indicate that the Lord is returning soon, so what do we need to prepare before the Lord returns? Today’s psalm is to teach us that one of the things we all need to prepare ourselves is to cultivate a life that praises God!

I. The saints gather and praise lively (V1)

God’s people should praise God with lively new songs in the assembly of saints!

II. Constantly praise and welcome the return of the Lord

The psalmist prophetically received God’s four wishes for the people.

1. May the saints rejoice in their Maker (V2)

May the saints rejoice and be glad in praise for our God who created us.

2. May the saints humbly praise with all their strength (V3-4)

May the saints come before God more humbly, praise Him with all their strength, and enter into the salvation He has prepared for us in the love of God.

3. May the saints be glorified and joyful (V5)

May the saints rejoice and delight at the glory that God has added to them!

4. May the saints judge in praise (V6)

May the saints wait for the Lord’s return in unceasing praises. Because the saints will eventually gain the God-given authority to judge the nations and represent God to uphold justice!

Conclusion:

Let us come together with God’s people to praise God in a lively way! That is, we should all rejoice and be happy because of the God who created us; we should also come before God more humbly and praise Him with all our strength; We must welcome the Lord’s return in praise, and carry out God’s righteous judgment with the authority bestowed by God!

Psalm 148: All things shall praise the LORD
GK611 Morning Devotion
21/12/2022
Speaker: Ps Stella

Introduction:

This Psalm speaks very thoroughly about how all things in heaven and earth must praise God! For all things were created by God.

1. The heavens will praise the LORD (v1-6)

This Psalm is calling all creation to praise God from heaven. For no matter how high the heavens may be, or how many levels there may be, our God is sovereign over all things in the highest. For not only did God create the worlds and hold all things together by His word and power, but even the universe operates in order according to the natural laws set by God, and cannot transgress the boundaries set by God.

2. All the earth shall praise the LORD (v7-12)

This passage is a call for all creation on earth to praise God as well. It is revealed here that ultimately all the people of the earth belong to the Lord and will come to know Him!

3. The people shall praise the LORD (v13-14)

Here the psalmist calls on all creation between heaven and earth and God’s chosen people to praise God together. The more we praise, the more humble we will become, for we will see that in fact everything we have comes from God, and that man has nothing to boast about in the first place.

Conclusion:

The LORD is worthy of our praise. Therefore, let us always think of God, draw near to Him and praise Him for His wonderful works!

Book of Jude 1

Jude: Keeping the true path and straying away
GK611 Morning Devotion
20/12/2022
Speaker: Ps Deborah

1. Knowing our own identity (v1-3)

When we want to fight hard for the Truth, it is necessary for us to know our own identity first. When we know who we are called to be as God’s children, we can stand in the right place and do the right thing. And know that we have the responsibility to defend the Truth. We can hold on to it even though we need to face hardship and persecution. For the Lord will keep what He invites, and will multiply mercy, peace, and love to us.

2. Recognising the Trickery of the Enemy (v4-16)

v5-10 Jude uses 3 Old Testament examples to warn believers of the sins to avoid. The first is the people of Israel who died in the wilderness because of their unbelief, and the second is the angels mentioned in Gen 6 who did not keep their position and committed adultery with the women of the world and were locked up to await the future judgment. Also the men of Sodom and Gomorrah, who wanted to commit adultery with the angels and were corrupted, would be punished by eternal fire.

V11 Cain, Balaam, and Korah were all serving God. Let us reflect our lives if we still have the shadows of these three people in our lives.

(1) Cain

Cain knew there was a God, but lived as if there was no God. He fell into the sin of jealousy, hatred, murder, and lying. Is our mindset in ministry to be affirmed and applauded by men? Do we believe that God is righteous when we encounter injustice? Or do we feel the injustice, so we rise up and take action to get justice.

(2) Balaam

Balaam disregarded God’s warnings, pretending to be godly and falsely sold his God-given anointing and gifts as a way to gain profit. Have we ever not done things according to God’s law for money or profit? Take legal loopholes?

(3) Korah

Korah disobeyed God’s authority and caused divisions among the people, as a result of which the earth split open and was eaten alive and fell into the underworld.
Children, employees, team members: Do you often complain, contradict or judge the authority behind their backs?

Supervisors, leaders, group leaders: If you can’t agree with what the authority is doing and can’t overcome it yourself, don’t challenge the authority. If you choose to leave, even more so, do not take away the staff or the Lord’s sheep because you are dissatisfied with the authority.

3.Living out the Truth of the Most Holy (v17-23)

(1) Remembering the teaching of the apostles (v17-19)

False teachers are those who draw parties and create divisions in the church; they claim to have divine revelation, but are people without the Holy Spirit. They are good scoffers, and walk after their own ungodly selfish desires. We must always meditate on the Word of God, and, moreover, search and memorise it. That we may recognise false teachers.

(2) To edify ourselves in the Truth (v20a)

Not just knowing, but actually living out the Truth in action, constantly allowing our lives to be expanded and elevated. To make our lives bright and shine for the Lord.

(3) Praying in Tongues in the Spirit (v20b)

Tongues is one of the greatest and most powerful gifts God has given us. It not only strengthens our spiritual being, but also changes the spiritual atmosphere and is the key to the gift of transcendent revelation. Praying in tongues is the secret of initiating miracles, for it is the Holy Spirit who intercedes on our behalf according to the will of God.

(4) Keep always in the love of God (v21)

If we want to live the Truth, we must keep ourselves always in the love of God, so that we can rely on the Lord’s mercy to get back up again when we are weak or fallen. In addition, we are really lacking in love as human beings. If we do not keep ourselves always in God’s love, it is difficult for us to love one another, and even more impossible to love the unlovable. It is also easy to treat others with the tree of knowledge of good and evil.

(5) Mercy Rescues the Weak (v22-23)

A doubting person wanders between Truth and falsehood, and needs a patient member who is good at teaching, and who will redeem him with a tender heart. Those who have lost sight of the Truth need someone to speak to them straightforwardly and snatch them out of the fire. Finally, if we want to redeem our brothers who have fallen into heresy, we must first have a fearful heart toward God, toward judgment, and toward sin. Do not look at yourself more than you should, lest you be tempted to fall and sacrifice the Truth for love.

Conclusion: Jesus Alone (v24-25)

Apart from the Lord we are nothing and can do nothing. Jude said that only with Jesus can we stand before the Lord of glory on the Day of Judgment without blemish and with joy. Therefore we must cling to our Saviour. He alone, through the Holy Spirit who dwells in us, has the power to keep us from straying away and to bring us to perfection. Amen! Let us worship the one true God, who was, is, and will be forever and ever!

Book of 3John 1

3 John 1: Do not imitate evil, but imitate good
GK611 Morning Devotion
16/12/2022
Speaker: Ps Daniel

Introduction:

In this short epistle, John delineates three characters and asks us to follow the example of Gaius and Demetrius, who ‘did good’, and warns us not to follow the example of Diotrephes, who ‘did evil’, to become a good witness for Christ.

1. Acts of doing good (V1-8,12)

(1) Walk according to the Truth (V3-4)

To ‘walk according to the Truth’ means to practise the truth and live out the Truth received.
When we live according to the Truth, we will make our spiritual elders happy and glorify God more, and become a living witness of ‘glorifying God and benefiting others’.

(2) Receive one another with love (V5-6)

The Lord Jesus said, “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who receives whomever I send receives Me; and he who receives Me receives Him who sent Me.” (Jn 13:20).
To receive one another is an expression of love for one another. If someone is willing to open his home to the needy, that person’s heart must also be open to God!

(3) Co-working for the Truth (V7-8)

As long as they contribute to a common goal, they are co-workers by dividing and cooperating with each other. The preachers who go out to work for the Lord, for transportation, food and lodging, often go forward by faith in the Lord, and the contributions of individual churches and believers everywhere are an act of faith by which the Lord fulfills them; and by which the churches and believers in general work together with the workers for the truth.
When God’s people provide adequately for God’s servants, it is a powerful testimony to the unbelieving world.

(4) Good testimony of good works (V12)

The good deeds of Demetrius, like Caius, were also recognised by the church. The Truth also testifies to them that they were faithful to the Truth and acted in accordance with the Truth.

2. The works of evil (V9-10)

The works of Diotrephes, who did not have love.

(1) putting self-righteousness as first priority (V9)

(2) unwillingness to receive (V9-10)

(3) presumptuous talk with evil words (V10)

In the process of serving God, we should always remind ourselves that although we are all serving and worshiping God under the same Truth, have we ever resisted and guarded against our brothers and sisters in our hearts for our own selfish desires? Have we ever competed with our brothers and sisters for our own performance? Pray that God would help us to always be alert to whether there is ‘residual’ sin in our hearts!

Conclusion:

11 Beloved, do not imitate what is evil, but what is good. He who does good is of God, but he who does evil has not seen God.

This book uses the three characters as a living textbook to teach the reader to abandon evil and do good, and to practise the Truth in love. It also shows us that we should not only walk according to the Truth ourselves, but also help those who work for the Truth with love.

Psalm 86

17/12/2022

Book of 2John 1

2 John 1: Living in the Truth GK611
Morning Devotion
15/12/2022
Speaker: Ps Stella + Rev Tan

Introduction: Truth is the foundation on which life is built

I. Know how to love (V4-6)

God has given us the Truth for us to obey and practise, and when we love each other, we practise the Truth. To truly love God, one should obey God’s commands (6). Obedience to God’s Words is also a manifestation of true love for God. Therefore, when we are determined to live the Truth, we know how to love those around us, even our enemies.

II. Know how to discern (V7-11)

1. Guard against heresy (V7-9)

The characteristic of the Antichrist is to deny the fact of the incarnation of Jesus Christ. John asked believers to always be vigilant, and not to be deceived by heresies, which will cause us to be strayed away from the Truth and God, and even lose God’s reward.

2. Do not be hospitable (V10-11)

The Bible teaches that it is the duty of believers to receive visitors with love, but it is also God’s command to obey the Truth. As guardians of the truth, we must be careful not to use unprincipled love and welcome people into our homes casually without discernment. You should also resolutely refuse to welcome false masters, and you don’t need to greet him, lest you have a share in his wickedness.

Conclusion:

Today, whether we truly live in the Truth depends on whether we love each other in the Truth and understand God’s Words so that we can discern and stand firm in the Truth when we face heresy.

Book of 1 John 5

1 John 5: Believing will receive eternal life with all your might
GK611 Morning Devotion
14/12/2022
Speaker: Asher Chang + Rev David Tan

Introduction: The Power of Faith

The prize of eternal life is freely given to us, but it takes faith to receive it. And faith requires believing and acting and waiting patiently and hoping and has the thought of never give up.

1. Faith overcomes the world V1-12

(1) Faith is the sign of rebirth V1-2

Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God. There is no way for us to go back to our mother’s womb once again to be born again. But when we believe in Jesus Christ, our lives are buried and resurrected with Jesus Christ, and we receive the sign of rebirth.

(2) Faith leads to victory over the world V3-5

Born-again life enables one to keep the commandments of God. The faith that overcomes the world is the faith that Jesus is the Son of God and that the source of the truth of salvation is Him. We can overcome because we believe that Jesus lives and that He dwells in us!

2. Believing God’s Testimony V6-12

(1) Faith is of God’s origin V6-10

The water and blood testify to the saving grace of the Lord Jesus Christ on the cross. Jesus Christ not only has water and blood as His witnesses, but also the Holy Spirit, who is the Spirit of Truth. A person’s faith in salvation depends on whether he believes in God or not. He who believes has the Holy Spirit dwelling in him. Man cannot receive the salvation of God by the flesh.

(2) The testimony of eternal life in the Son of God V11-12

God freely gave man Jesus Christ, the Son of God, to testify to the eternal life He has given us. Jesus himself is life, and if a man has Jesus Christ, he has life. For us who are born again, Christ is our life.

3.The evidence of eternal life V13-21

(1) Evidence of Eternal Life V13

John writes to believers who have already believed in the Son of God, in order that we may be sure of our faith in the Lord, and that we have eternal life in us.

(2) Evidence of prayer V14-17

As we believe that we have the living God in us, we have the evidence of prayer. If we ask according to His will, He will hear us. To intercede for brothers who have committed sins that unlikely leads to death means to pray for unbelievers, brothers and sisters who are confused by the world and have left God. It is God’s will that no one should perish, but that all should repent.

(3) The assurance of victory V18-21

John reiterates three assurance of victory.
First, We know that whoever is born of God will not sin.
Secondly, we know that we belong to God.
Third: We know that we can have fellowship with God.
Now that we know that this is the true God, and that in Him is eternal life. It is imperative that we keep ourselves from idols and avoid leaving God. It is the duty of the children of God to keep themselves, and to keep themselves by the power of God through faith.

Conclusion: Believe with all your might and live in eternal life!

Believing in the living God is necessary to believe that God will give us the power to overcome!
Salvation by regeneration consists in: (1) fellowship with God (2) abiding in the Lord (3) belonging to God (4) knowing God (5) being born of God (6) having life (7) having eternal life.
