Judges 14: Putting on “Spiritual Glasses”
GK611 Morning Devotion
18/1/2023
Speaker: Asher Chang + Rev Tan
Introduction: Practicing x- ray vision

In the past, when I went to the market with my mother to buy vegetables, she did not just look at the surface of the vegetables, but also pay attention to the core, origin, price, seller and other factors before making a decision. I also have eyes, but at that time there are many things I can not distinguish. Why are there still people who can’t tell the difference between fake notes? Because we all have less practice, can not see, can not understand, in the end, the loss is their own.
The story of Samson today tells us to keep our eyes open. We need to put on our spiritual glasses, otherwise we will be blinded by the world and flesh.

1.The eyes of the flesh make us blind V1-4

(1)Seeing only the needs of the flesh V1-3
Samson lived in Zorah, upstream of the brook Sorek, and Timnah was downstream of the brook Sorek. The valley of Sorek was the border between the Israelites and the Philistines. Every time he went to Timnah, he needed to go down like the sea, and his life kept going down.

Samson was chosen by God to be the judge, and God anointed him. He was a Nazirite, who should have been sanctified and used by God to save Israel from the Philistines, but he was blinded by the lust of his eyes. He only wanted what he wanted, and ignored the commandments of God and the counsel of his parents.

(2)Losing the joy of working with God V4

Samson’s eyes were attracted to the Philistine woman, and this became a weakness in his life. This was Samson’s choice, and God used his weakness to deal with the enemy. Just as God had allowed Joseph’s brothers to sell him into Egypt. Samson lived in himself as he pleased, unaware of God’s plan for him. Although he was still being used by God, he was unable to understand God’s heart and lost the joy of working with God.

2. The curious eye makes us forgetful V 5-9

(1) Forgetfulness Steps Into Temptation V5

The area of Timnah was well suited for growing grapes and was the dividing line between the Israelites and the Philistines in the days of the scribes.
Samson took the initiative to approach the temptation and went where he should not go, for God had commanded that the Nazirites should keep away from all grape products.

(2) Forgetting God’s Reminder V6

When Samson was in danger, God stepped in to save him and caused him to tear the lion apart. The Spirit of God came upon him, but he did not tell his parents, so he had forgotten all about God. God may have asked him to turn back through this filling, but Samson could not resist the temptation of beauty and continued on.

(3) Forgetting his identity V7-9

Samson returned to the vineyard once again, and this time to the point of forgetfulness. Out of curiosity and good food, he violated the Nazirite rule of not going near a dead body, and took the honey taken out of the dead lion. He also gave it to his parents, so that they also violated the rule of cleanliness of food.

3.Blindness limits the works of God V10-20

(1)The Blind Life V10-17

Samson’s father went down to meet the woman, and Samson set up a banquet there. The verse “For this has always been the rule with young men” may mean that Samson was already drinking with the crowd. The whole wedding feast was conducted in the manner of the Gentiles. The Philistines were afraid of Samson, so they invited thirty people to the feast.

Samson probably saw their hostility and challenged them with a riddle. But in the end, he could not resist the tears of the women and gave away the answer to them. None of the scenes at Samson’s wedding had the holiness of the Nazirites. But God allowed these things to happen to break up Samson with the Philistines so that the Israelites would be awakened from their slumber.

(2) Weakness cannot accomplish great things V18-20

The Spirit of the LORD moved Samson greatly, and great power came to Samson. Before him, the judge mentioned that the Spirit of the Lord came upon them at most once, but only Samson was touched by the Spirit of God four times.

It was a pity that he had received such special grace from God, but he lived only by himself and was not set apart for holiness. Samson’s life was so full of gaps that God could only use him for very small things, and at that moment he only killed 30 people and a lion.

The gap in his life blinded Samson’s spiritual eyes, and he went about his business by mistake, following his lusts, and God wanted to use him, but he used him with difficulty. We see Samson rushing around like a brute bull, but God could not find anyone else but him.

Conclusion: Don’t become spiritually blind
Today, we need to be careful not to decide our lives according to what we want. Although Samson was used by God despite his suffering and failures, God does not want this for us, but expects us to obey the Holy Spirit, live in Christ, and enjoy the joy of working together with God.

Ask God to help us not to become spiritually blind. Put on spiritual glasses at all times, so that we may recover from myopia and other eye diseases.

Book of Judges 13

Judges 13: Wonderful God Didn’t Stop Saving
GK611 Morning Devotion
17/1/2023
Speaker: Ps. Deborah + Rev. Tan

Background:

After the death of Joshua, because of Israel’s rebellion and disobedience, God left some Canaanites to test them. Every time they were oppressed by the enemy and turned back to call on God, God raised up judges one by one to rescue them. However, the people of Israel did not love God and fear God more because of God’s repeated salvation. On the contrary, each generation was worse than the previous, and even the judges were getting less capable. Although the situation of the entire generation is extremely dark and corrupt, the faithful and loving God has never given up on His people, and still hopes that through discipline, the loved ones will know how to turn around and be redeemed.

I. God takes the initiative to carry out salvation (V1-3)

1. Don’t be assimilated by evil (V1)

At the beginning of the scriptures, it is mentioned that the people of Israel once again did evil things in the eyes of the Lord, so God used the Philistines to discipline them for 40 years. In the past, when the people were disciplined and could not bear the oppression of the enemy, they would turn back and call on God. But this time, even though they were under the rule of the Philistines for 40 years, the people did not call on God at all. It can be seen how deep the spiritual darkness of the people was at that time. It seems to have entered a kind of numbness, accepted the facts, and was willing to be restrained and ruled to the point where they didn’t even feel the need to cry out to God.

2. God will rise when bottoming out (V2-3)

It was considered a great shame for a woman in ancient Israel to be barren, so Manoah’s wife was considered hopeless. But God chose to elevate this lowly, hopeless woman to raise up salvation for the people through her and awaken the people who are willing to numb and die in sin. It was God’s mercy, whether it was Manoah’s wife or the people of Israel, it was God who took the initiative to save.

1 Corinthians 10:13 God is faithful and will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you can bear, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape. Brothers and sisters, when we feel that our difficulties have reached an impasse, bottomed out, and there is nothing lower than this, we must believe that God knows, and He will personally save and lift us up.

II. Man must respond to God’s salvation (V4-14)

1. Change begins with ourselves (V4-7)

God told Manoah’s wife that after she was about to give birth to a son, God commanded her not to drink wine or similar drinks, nor to eat unclean things. It means that as a mother, she must first start living the life of a Nazarite.

The more we know the truth, the more we will understand that change always starts with ourselves. Very often when we change ourselves, we see the people, things, and things we expected to see because we changed first, and they will be different.

2. Precise inquiry needs action (V8-14)

Manoah was very serious about asking about parenting. Even wondering what the future holds for this child. But from the life that Samson lived later, we all know that as parents, they did not carefully observe what God had entrusted to them, and they were negligent and doting on the child in raising the child. This is why the messenger did not answer Manoah on what will Samson be like when he grows up. Because what Samson will be like when he grows up, depends on his parents and whether they obey God’s commands.

Manoah was also an absent husband and father. From God’s 2 appearances, he was not by his wife’s side, and it was the mother who named the child in v24. It can be seen that he was not around when the child was born. This is why Samson’s life could not live out God’s original will. Therefore, brothers have a very important responsibility for raising children so that they can grow up physically or spiritually.

3. Sacrifice wholeheartedly and truly know God (V15-23)

Manoah wanted to prepare a young goat for the angel of the LORD, but the angel asked him to offer a burnt offering to the LORD. We can understand what he said to his wife in v16, 21, and v22. In fact, although Manoah knew how to offer sacrifices to God, he knew the truth in the Old Testament that people must die when they see God’s face, wanting to know the name of the messenger so that he can repay Him, but he does not really know God. He knew God with knowledge but did not communicate with God sincerely. Therefore, he sees things negatively and thinks of the worst. Our offering and understanding of God must start from the heart, only in this way can we live out the hope of God and bring forth the glory of God.

III. Wonderful God Does Wonderful Salvation (V24-25)

When Manoah asked the messenger’s name in v17, the messenger said to him: “Why do you ask My name, seeing it is wonderful?” The tribe was a disobedient tribe, but the wonderful God chose Samson out of this disobedient tribe. But the wonderful God chose Samson from this disobedient tribe and prepared a vessel He would use among the hopeless people as salvation of the people.

Conclusion:

It is amazing that God never stops His salvation of people. Not only should we respond and work together with God, but we should also not limit ourselves, and choose to give wholeheartedly so that we and our loved ones can also experience this wonderful deed of God together.

Book of Judges 12

Judges 12: It is by the grace of God that man is chosen

Speaker: Ps. Daniel Kew

Introduction:

The judges also had shortcomings and weaknesses. God uses them, not because they are superior, but because of His grace!

1. The judge who angrily killing of a fellow friend (V1-7)

(1) Ephraim spoke out to provoke (V1-3)

The Ephraimites had ‘quarreled greatly with Gideon’ (Judg. 8:1) for the same reason: why ‘there was no move’, but the quarrel was quelled by Gideon with words of wisdom. This time the Ephraimites went even further than the last time. They did not just quarrel, but they threatened Jephthah with burning his house and provoked an attack on the Gileadites.

It is a common manifestation of corrupt human nature to make threats and provocations in the struggle for power and profit.

(2) Jephthah’s anger and pursuit (V4-6)

Jephthah’s anger was greatly aroused by Ephraim’s mockery of the Gileadites, and he wanted to kill the Ephraimites. Even if the Ephraimites tried to deny their identity, he pursued them to the end. Jephthah killed a total of 42,000 people in this battle, making him a murderer of his countrymen!

attacks and malicious questioning, to be able to respond gently requires not only wisdom, but also the strength to be patient and tolerant!

(3) Jephthah’s conclusion on the coffin lid (V7)

Although Jephthah had many weaknesses, he was still listed as an example of faith (Heb. 11:32). For God wanted to show us through Jephthah that a weak and flawed man like Jephthah could be saved and used through the faith God gave him.

2. The judges that were skimmed through (V8-15)

(1) Ibzan (V8-10)

Ibzan was supposed to be a very rich and had good relations with people in other places as a taxi driver. He was as a judge for seven years.

(2) Elon (V11-12)

There is the least information about Elon among the judge. It is only recorded that he was a judge for ten years.

(3) Abdon (V13-15)

The three generations of the same family, Abdon, must have been a wealthy and influential judge as well. He was a judge for 8 years.

All three of these judges reigned for a short time, and they are not mentioned as having any great deeds. But God still recorded their names. So, don’t think that our ministry in the church is insignificant, but God has already recorded our names!

Conclusion:

No matter how we evaluate the success or failure of Jephthah, Ibzan, Elon, and Abdon, we cannot deny that God chose them; God’s choice does not care about the worthiness of a man, but about God’s grace! In the same way, God uses us ‘insignificant people’ not because we are flawless, but because of His mercy and grace to give us the opportunity to serve. So, let us serve God and serve people with all our heart and soul!

Book of Judges 11

Judges 11: God raises up a warrior
GK611 Morning Devotion

Speaker: Ps Stella

Introduction:

God could use an ordinary man to let the people know that it was the Lord their God who raised up mighty men to deliver them.

I. God Raises Up Lowly People (v1-11)

1. Abandoned by people (v1-3)

Because of his identity as the son of a prostitute, Jephthah was expelled by the son of Gilead’s wife. So he escaped the rejection of his brothers and fled to the land of Tob. In the eyes of the world, such a person should be useless, and there will be no achievements.

2. Raised up by God (v4-11)

Because Jephthah feared God, he was raised up by God from a humble status to become a mighty warrior. Although he was in an unfair situation, he was still used by God.

II. Relying on the Lord to face the enemy bravely (v11-28)

1. Face the enemy bravely

Jephthah rebuked the king of the Ammonites for their unsubstantiated claim that the Israelites had taken their land. Jephthah attempted to disprove Ammon’s claims historically. Jephthah’s response, however, seems to have had trouble winning the heart of the king of Ammon.

2. Hold on to the promise

Jephthah clearly understood that God had delivered the Ammonites into his hands. So, even though in the end the Ammonites didn’t listen to what he had to say, he still believed and held on to God’s promise.

III. Victory by Divine Power (v29-40)

1. The Spirit of Jehovah is with you (v29-33)

Because the Spirit of the Lord was with Jephthah, Jephthah successfully captured 20 cities of the Ammonites, ending 18 years of suffering and humiliation for the Israelites. Today, the Holy Spirit is not only always with us, but also within us, empowering us to serve, and helping us to change our lives.

2. Know the truth and avoid disaster (v34-40)

Although Jephthah experienced victory, he sacrificed his daughter. The tragedy of his sacrificing his daughter was entire because he did not truly understand God’s will. Therefore, we need to understand the truth so that we know that the victory that God promises to us is because of God Himself, not because we can exchange anything with Him.

Conclusion:

God can raise up anyone who is willing to be used by God, including the humble or weak. So let us all be willing to be mighty warriors used by God!
