Luke Chapter 4: Jesus-Our Example
GK611 Morning Devotion
27/10/2023
The Morning Devotion Speaker: Co-worker Asher Chang

Introduction: We are all little Christs

1. Jesus defeated temptation (V1-13)

(1) The temptation of fleshly needs (V1-4)

When faced with physical needs, the evil one will often stand by us to give us advice, making us feel that solving our immediate needs is the priority.

These may allow us to go with the flow, be reasonable, and feel at ease to consider the needs of the flesh, but in fact, departing from all the words that come out of God’s mouth means leaving the source of life and heading toward death.

(2) The temptation of being in high places (V5-8)

When people stand in high places, it is easy to fall into the temptation of arrogance, self-absorption, and arrogance. Because intoxicated with power, glory, and carelessness.

We need to be alert. In our current environment, have we grasped that some things are more important than God? Let us hold on to God whether we are high or low, and serve Him alone.

(3) The temptation of gifted power (V9-13)

The devil also uses scripture and provocations to draw us away from God and into chaos. Today, when we are facing difficulties, there may be people around us who do not know God who will challenge us and ask us why our God does not help us.

We must be careful not to tempt our God, for His purposes are higher than ours.

2. Jesus preached by the Holy Spirit (V14-15)

Jesus was full of the power of the Holy Spirit whether in temptation or in preaching. And wherever he went, His fame spread far and wide, and everyone praised Him.

3. Jesus was rejected by others (V16-30)

When Jesus returned to his hometown to preach and even declared that He was the Messiah, everyone reacted with doubts.

Because everyone was so familiar with Jesus and only saw Him as the son of Joseph and a fellow member of his own clan, they all chose not to believe Him. Because of their unbelief, Jesus stopped performing miracles there.

This also reminds us not to be blinded by too much familiarity. Especially when someone we are familiar with is promoted to a small group leader, a co-worker, or a preacher, we must regard them as our leaders and not look down upon them because we are too familiar with them.

4. Jesus’ Words are with authority (V31-37)

Jesus was rejected in his hometown, so he turned to other places to preach the gospel, and the message and power of the kingdom of God came to other places. He can make people feel the authority of God in His Words, and thus develop a heart of reverence and obedience to God. So, people heard that there was authority in His words.

5. The healing power of Jesus (V38-41)

Jesus heals all those who long for Jesus and come to Him. Many people come to Jesus just to heal the sick and cast out demons, not to hear the sermon; they just want to solve people’s needs instead of seeking God; they just want to escape from foreign rule, not their own crime. But the Lord Jesus laid hands on each of them without distinction and healed them.

6. Jesus carried out the Great Commission (V42-44)

The Lord Jesus Christ became flesh to serve people, not according to people’s needs, but according to God’s will. He did not prove himself with his own abilities but was willing to humble himself and preach the kingdom of God among the people.

Conclusion:Jesus’ commitment is our model.

Psalm 39

30/10/2023

Psalm 37

Book of Luke 3

Luke 3 Preparing for the Lord’s second coming
GK611 Morning Devotion
26/10/2023
The Morning Devotion Speaker: Ps. Deborah Tan

Introduction:

1. Responding to God’s Call (v1-6)

(1) The background of a corrupted age (v1-2)

From Dr Luke’s description, we know that it was a time of social debauchery and corruption of faith. In such a dark time, God, after 400 years of silence, finally spoke to John. This was the beginning of John the Baptist’s ministry career in response to God’s call.

(2) Christ’s pioneer (v3-6)

Luke quoted this passage from Isaiah 40:3-5 in order to make the Jews, who were familiar with the Old Testament at that time, understand that the Jesus he was to introduce later was the prophesied Messiah. And John the Baptist responded to God’s call in the wilderness to be the pioneer of Christ, and went to the area of the Jordan River to preach the baptism of repentance, with the purpose of preparing the hearts of men for the Lord, so that they might receive forgiveness of sins. Seeing God’s salvation.

Christ’s first coming was to bring salvation for mankind. But the second coming is for judgment. In this dark and perverse age, we are all God’s chosen pioneers to prepare the way for Christ’s second coming. Let us all rise up and answer God’s call.

2. Life’s preparation (v7-21)

There was a legend amongst the Jews at that time that their ancestor Abraham sat at the gates of hell and did not allow any of his descendants to go down to hell’, and therefore thought that they would not be judged. John pointed out that their thinking was totally wrong, and warned that to escape God’s future judgment and the fires of hell, apart from baptism, it was more important that the life should bear fruits worthy of repentance:

(1) To give mercy (v11)

It is more blessed to give than to receive. Mercy and giving are the best evidence of a Christian living a life of repentance. Because of the Lord’s mercy and grace to us, we freely receive salvation and blessing. Therefore, when we see the needs of others, we must also reach out and become channels of God’s blessing.

(2) Be content and honest (v12-14)

Tax collectors were Jews who collected taxes for the Roman government, and at that time all had a problem with greed. They oppressed their fellow man and enriched themselves. Soldiers were local guards employed by the Roman government. These soldiers were often bullying and brutalizing the common people, taking other people’s money and possessing it for themselves. So John says that being upright and honest, being content and not blackmailing people, is a sign of true repentance.

There are many doctrines and teachings that distort the truth in today’s generation, and there are many false values and trends that can cause Christians to fall into compromising and sacrificing the truth, and we need to be careful.

(3) Exalting Christ (v15-16)

John the Baptist was well aware that he was called to be a pioneer for Christ. So when the crowds speculated whether he was the Messiah or not, he promptly cleared up the misunderstanding and exalted Christ.

In pastoral care, we have to be careful to keep our place. Bring people to the Lord, not to ourselves. Let us not block the view of others to Christ.

(4) Evangelise (v17-18)

The reference here is to the judgment that will be administered at the return of the Lord Christ. The wheat will be gathered in the barn. The useless chaff will be destroyed. The world situation lets us know that the day of Christ’s return is not far off. Let us do all we can to evangelise while the door of grace is still open and the judgment has not come.

(5) Defend the truth (v19-20)

John was ultimately martyred for his Lord in order to defend the truth and not compromise with moral deprivation.

(6) The filling of the Holy Spirit (v21-22)

John calls for repentance, baptism with water is only a sign of repentance, it does not effect salvation or change of life. Therefore, we need the Holy Spirit from Jesus and the baptism of fire to purify our lives. So that we may have a life of humility. So that the gates of heaven will be opened for us to glorify God by living a victorious life and serving with fruitfulness and power.

3. Jesus is the son of man (v23-38)

The genealogy of Jesus recorded by Luke is meant to highlight Jesus’ identity as the son of man. Like John the Baptist, the Lord Jesus expects us to be co-workers and partners with Him in accomplishing the greater things of the Kingdom of God.

Conclusion: Are you ready?

Brothers and sisters, do you have a part in what God will accomplish? If the Lord Jesus were to return today, would you be ready? Would you be able to welcome Him without fear?

We are all called by God to prepare the way for the Lord’s Second Coming as police escorts and pioneers. Not only do we need to help our loved ones prepare for the Last Judgment, but we also need to help our loved ones prepare for the Last Judgment. Yesterday, at the Youth Pastors’ Gathering organised by Love Singapore, the church was also encouraged to disciple the younger generation to become workers in the harvest field and modern day John the Baptists! GK is actively preparing our younger generation for YAY, will you be a part of it?

Luke 2 Humble Yourself to Become Salvation
GK611 Morning Devotion
25/10/2023
The Morning Devotion Speaker: Brother Bezalel Tan

Introduction: Self- recommendation

1. Jesus’ birth brings hope (2:1-21)

(1) Jesus came into the world according to prophecy V1-7

Joseph and Mary purposely travelled south from Nazareth to Bethlehem because of enrollment in the book of the Lord. As a result, Jesus was born in the city of Bethlehem; in fact, the prophet Isaiah Micah had foretold this, so we can see that God had arranged for the Saviour’s birth, and how marvelous it was to be fulfilled in history.

(2) Jesus is the light that illuminates all darkness (V8-14)

God was silent for more than four hundred years between the two covenants. For God’s chosen one, they longed for the Messiah to come soon and rescue them from their control and bondage. The angelic appearances and announcements were the greatest glad tidings of all. For this glad tidings brought the hope of seeing the light again.

(3) Deliberately born under the law to be saved (V15-24)

Jesus, the son of Abraham, born of a woman, born under the law, was to be circumcised. He was given the name Jesus, which means Joshua, the salvation of the LORD. So Jesus humbled himself to be born under the law to save those under the law.

2. Obeying God’s Word to know of the mission (2:25-39)

God’s Word is like a directional sign that guides us in the direction we are going. When we learn to read and act on God’s Word, we will surely understand our responsibility and mission.

3. The child Jesus was different (2:40-52)

The child Jesus was mindful of his Father’s business and had a clear goal, and was a good example for children to obey their parents. As a result, he grew in wisdom and stature and in favour with God and man.

Conclusion:

Don’t let your upbringing and what you see limit your vision, so that you cannot see God’s commitment and blessing in your life. At the same time, when we are willing to trust and obey God’s leading and recognise His presence, He will ultimately lead us through trials and tribulations. He will lead us through the trials and into the land of abundance.

Luke 1 Believe God’s Prophecy and Respond to God’s Calling

The Morning Devotion Speaker: Ps. Daniel Kew

Introduction: When you hear God’s divine prophecy, will you believe it and respond to it?

1. Gospel written based on facts (V1-4)

Luke particularly emphasised that the gospel he preached was a gospel that was written based on facts because the things that had been accomplished were seen by others with their own eyes and carefully examined by him. And this is the most amazing thing about the gospel, it can be experienced and verified.

2. Prophecy of the birth of John the Baptist (V5-25)

(1) The prayers of the righteous are heard by God (V5-17)

Here we first talk about John’s parents, the priests Zechariah and Elizabeth. Both of them were righteous before God and blameless, but they were old and barren. Zechariah must have been praying and waiting for this for a long time.

When we pray, God responds to us in His best time and way. If you are waiting for answers to your prayers, Zachariah and his wife are your examples.

(2) Even though the priest is weak, God still shows mercy (V18-23)

Although Zechariah was a devout and righteous man, he still had moments of weakness. He only saw that their bodies were old and he could not see the power of God. Zechariah’s unbelief rendered him temporarily mute. But in the end, God was still gracious to the couple and allowed Elizabeth to get pregnant to remove the shame.

We must have faith to believe God’s prophecies. God’s words often make the impossible possible, and human’s reasoning cannot hinder God’s will. What God predicted four hundred years ago will be fulfilled four hundred years later. God is not forgetful but waits for His timing.

3. Prophecy of the birth of Jesus, the Son of God (V26-56)

An angel appeared to a virgin Mary, foretelling that she would conceive from the Holy Spirit and give birth to a son. He would be named Jesus, and he would be called the Son of God. Mary answered: Behold the maidservant of the Lord! Let it be to me according to your word. Mary chose to accept this challenging call, and then she said: “My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior. no matter what method God uses to accomplish His will, Mary firmly believes ‘God has done great things for me’!

Mary is a brave girl! Especially in that era, those who became pregnant out of wedlock would not only be divorced by their fiancés but might even be stoned to death. Nevertheless, Mary fully believed in and responded to God’s will. The person God will use must be someone who obeys and responds to God!

4. The Lord’s pioneer is born (V57-80)

The birth of John the Baptist was a great joy because he was the pioneer who opened the way for the Lord! John will bring great joy and hope to people. When Zechariah wrote the words “His name is John,” Zechariah’s mouth opened, his tongue loosed, and he began to speak and praise God!

Zechariah filled with the Holy Spirit, prophesied that salvation was coming; God has placed the power of salvation in us. John the Baptist was to bring salvation to God’s people.

Conclusion:

Let us all learn from Mary, believe in God’s prophecies, and respond to God’s calling. Come before God every day, meditate more on and understand His words, and obey them willingly, ‘because the Word of God brings power’! When God’s will is revealed in our lives, we can become vessels that glorify God!

Introduction: The Jade Seal of Victory

1. Only God is the winner (V1-5)

This is David’s prayer before he goes to war. In this passage, it is the people’s prayer for the king. Their hearts are focused on God, not the chariots, horses, and forces the world relies on. Even though they prepared their troops, had their plans, and even had King David leading them, they still entrusted everything they had and their king to God. Because only God can exalt people, grant victory, and achieve victory.

When we are doing things, we may also have good leaders, financial resources, abilities, manpower, etc. But even when you are very sure, never forget God’s name. Never forget that everything is for the glory of God.

2. Respond with faith and never forget God (V6-8)

This passage is the king’s response. The king’s confidence in claiming victory comes from relying on God. At that time, chariots and horses were the most important weapons in war. These are all things that can be seen with the eyes, touched with the hands, and very practical. Even though David’s army only consisted of foot soldiers and did not have chariots and horses, he still had the confidence to win and relied completely on the invisible God.

This reminds us not to focus on worldly values, not because success is based on the world’s standards, but because we should never forget God in everything.

3. Only God can accomplish good things (V9)

After the king responded, the people continued to pray for the king. Although all the people were confident, the king was also confident, and the morale of the whole country was very high. Even though everything seems certain to win, the people’s prayer is that the King will answer us, and God’s will be done.

Although we have all the assurances, only God will accomplish the most wonderful things in the end. Regardless of the result, we focus on God and may He answer us.

Conclusion: Let God intervene in everything and mention God’s name!

Psalm 36

23/10/2023
