Psalm 5

14/08/2023

Book of 1st Samuel 23

1 Samuel 23 【Things turn around, God is in charge】
GK611 Morning Devotion

The Morning Devotion Speaker: Rev David Tan

Introduction:Chinese young people go on blind dates……

1. Suffered and rescued after acting for the Lord (23:1-5)

In David’s Psalms, he said that “God is a father of the fatherless” (Psalm 68:5), which shows that David firmly believes that God is the “Father” who oversees everything and omnipotent; therefore, when the enemy comes to attack his compatriots, when the situation is difficult what should he do? Seeking Father Jehovah was the first thing he does. In fact, it was already very difficult for David to flee with 400 people. Now he has to take the initiative to face the attack of the Philistines, which is an even greater challenge. Because the enemy army is strong, and David and his men are almost unarmed, how can they fight? Therefore, David cautiously consulted God the Father.

When you face difficulties and bring 400 people with difficulties, wouldn’t it be 400 times more difficult? At this time, God prepared for a national crisis to arise. And someone came and told David, David could have said, “What does it have to do with me? Won’t you go to King Saul to save you?” Because of this crisis, 400 followers who were in distress experienced a reversal and became life-saving heroes. And the confidence in fighting in the future will increase greatly.

How many difficulties and challenges are you facing? What you lack, what you don’t have, don’t forget “Father has”, we have an almighty Father! What we lack is to ask wholeheartedly, and then act according to God’s will.

2. Betrayed though obeying the Lord to save people (23:6-13)

David had hidden well at first, and with the addition of being the leader of 400 people, he had many “rogue” helpers, so he settled down temporarily. But when Keilah’s citizens were in trouble, David led 400 unofficial soldiers to rescue them. In this way, his whereabouts were exposed, and Saul had the opportunity to hunt him down. And when David prayed to God, he knew that Saul would come to hunt him down and that even the Keilah people would betray him. What kind of blow is this? Revenge for kindness? No return on a good deed? Where is the sense of justice? God! How did that happen?

David didn’t complain, since he knew it was so, let’s get out of that city! David’s followers looked at David’s behaviour; seeking God, praying to God, doing things according to God’s will, and not counting people’s evil. David testified with a good life. As a result, the army doubled by 50%, and the number of people who followed him out of the city became 600.

Have you ever been betrayed, rejected for good intentions, or falsely accused? Father in heaven is watching, if your attitude towards life is correct and your reaction is positive, you will gain double rewards in the end.

3. People act but God makes the decision (23:14-29)

(1) Life, death, misfortune, and fortune all depend on God (V14-15)

David lived in a mountain camp in the wilderness. In the past, he hid alone and was not easy to be found. Now there are 600 people following David. It is not easy to hide so that he cannot be found. King Saul could have brought many guards and notices such as being wanted by the whole country, it would not be easy to not be discovered. Moreover, the king put aside the important affairs of the country, and only looked for David with all his heart, looking for David every day. How could he not find him? It turned out that God did not hand David over to Saul. In other words, people’s life, death, misfortune and happiness are all depend on God. How can we not trust God?

(2) God sent allies secretly and gave strength (V16-18)

On the contrary, Jonathan, David’s ally, came all the way to find David alone, how could he find David immediately when he came? It turned out that this was God’s arrangement. When a brother was in trouble, he needed the comfort of a friend the most, and God allowed him to find David without any effort. Cheering up friends in distress is important, and paying a caring visit is invaluable.

(3) People turn the steering wheel for self-interest (V19-26)

David contributed to the whole of Israel, and he was kind and zealous and loved by almost all his compatriots; unfortunately, King Saul was the only one who wanted to kill David because of his jealousy. However, the compatriots living in Ziph act in the eyes of others. To please King Saul, they might gain benefits, but they also became betrayers of David. When people deviate from the truth due to their selfish motives, they seem to think that they are still following God, but they are liars and cursed. The psalms written by David during this period said that they were outsiders who had no God in their eyes, but David’s heart depended on God, so he said: ‘Behold, God is my helper; The Lord is with those who uphold my life.’ (Psalm 54:4)

(4) God is always in control of the whole situation (V27-29)

In the last scene, Saul’s pursuers have already come to the same mountain, Saul is on this side of the mountain, and David’s team is on the other side; in other words, they will encounter each other at any time. At this moment when the situation became more and more tense, the Philistines invaded and robbed the country again, so the king had no choice but to go back quickly, and the situation was saved again. It can be seen that the whole situation is completely under God’s control, and David’s hair would not have been damaged without God’s permission.

What kind of life is your future? With all in the hands of God the Father, how can we not learn to trust Him tightly?

Conclusion: Recognise that we have a Heavenly Father

Our Heavenly Father not only loves and cares for us but also loves to guide our lives. Since we have such a father, what are we afraid of or worried about?

1 Samuel 22 Rise and fall
GK611 Morning Devotion

The Morning Devotion Speaker: Ps Stella Ling

Introduction:

We look at David and Saul to see how God raises up those who turn to Him and declines those who turn away from Him.

1. Saul’s fall (v6-19)

(1) Jealousy and Panic (v6-8)

There was panic in Saul. He thought everyone was against him, and his mind was filled with fantasized scenarios of enemies on all sides. In fact, no one was ganging up at all, no one was conspired against him. The carnal Saul also fell into self-pity and envy, blaming everyone.

(2) Slaughter of the priests (v9-19)

Here Saul is seen to be even more twisted than before! In a previous battle, Saul was about to kill his son, but because the people rose up to stop him, he refrained from killing him. Coming to the present day, Saul commanded the guards to kill the priests and his household. Even though the guards objected, he still insisted on killing them, showing that he was more ruthless and hardened than ever before.

2. The Rise of David (v1-5, v20-23)

(1) Becoming a Leader (v1-2)

At that time many people came to David. So there was no one following David, but suddenly he became the leader of 400 men; these men who were in a bad mental, emotional, and state of mind seemed to have no way out, and they may have thought that following David might be a way out. We see God taking David into the cave of Adullam and molding his life to be able to rise up and manage these 400 different types of people.

(2) Willing to listen (v3-5)

God sent the prophet Gad to urge David to go to the land of Judah and not have to seek refuge outside of Israel. The life of a leader is to be willing to listen, especially before he has become king of the Israelites, he has to learn to listen first. We see David learning to accomplish dependence on God even after much adversity and difficulty. Therefore, when David heard God’s command, he did as he was told and went to the land of Judah.

(3) Taking responsibility (v20-23)

In the face of this tragedy of the slaughter of the priests, David responded by reflecting on himself and taking responsibility for the whole thing (v22). Although he was not directly responsible for the death of the priests, he recognised that it was his own guile that had implicated others.

As leaders, we are supposed to be the ones who are willing to listen, often reflect on ourselves and be willing to take responsibility.

Conclusion:

May God help us to have lives that are humble, yet raised up by Him.

Book of 1st Samuel 21

1 Samuel 21 On the Run, Know Yourself and God
GK611 Morning Devotion
8/8/2023
The Morning Devotion Speaker: Ps. Daniel

Introduction:

From the beginning of Chapter 21 to the end of 1 Samuel, it records David’s life of fleeing from Saul. In this chapter, God also began to deal with David’s flesh, allowing David who was fleeing to know his own weakness and God’s power better, to know himself and God, and to enhance his confidence in God!

I. Flee to the city of priests—Nob (V1-9)

1. The fugitive David revealed weakness

The first place David fled was Nob, which was the location of the Tabernacle of God at that time. David came to the house of the Lord and lied for his own protection, food and weapons.

We see God’s will, and David’s weakness would not have been revealed had he not been in exile. David, who was just being pursued now, told a lot of lies. Therefore, we must know that the people God wants to use will continue to experience being pursued, to expose and break the weakness of our flesh one by one, and to renew us.

2. God’s mercy came to David

David’s lie about asking for bread seems to have fooled the priests, but God is in control! Let David meet a priest with a heart of ‘mercy and grace’! The priest Ahimelech was merciful to David. He not only graciously gave David the holy bread that only priests could eat, but also gave David the sword.

In Matthew 12, when Jesus quoted David eating the holy bread that only the priests could eat, the Lord focused on the truth of ‘I love mercy, not sacrifice’! Explain that those who are truly pleasing to God know how to live out the attributes of God’s mercy after experiencing God’s mercy, instead of just sticking to the rules of the Bible and ignoring people’s needs.

II. Hide into the enemy’s territory – Gath (V10-15)

2. Once enter Gath, being ecognized

When David saw many of Saul’s servant from the priest, David knew that it was not right to stay in the tent, so he got up to hide from Saul. This time David thought he would be safe by hiding with the Philistines. As soon as he arrived in Gath, people recognized him and called him the king of Israel. David was very afraid that Achish the king of Gath would kill him.

David relied on his own cleverness to think that he could find refuge by hiding in the enemy, but instead he entered into another fear and restlessness!

2. Pretended to be mad and got away all because of God

David was afraid of being killed, so he pretended to be mad in front of the Philistines. David’s plan succeeds, and Achish believed David was mad and drove him away. It was David’s apparent madness that got him out, but he was really mad when he was seeking safety among his enemies! In fact, God only allowed the Philistines to expose him, but prevented them from taking revenge on David. Because God wanted David to know more about God’s power and his own incompetence in adversity, so that he could turn back to God and mold him into a king who relied on God!

We all need to be like David, willing to be broken by God and accept God’s building, so that God’s good will can be fulfilled in us!

Conclusion:

People in the world often suffer in vain in difficulties, or they are unable to face and choose to escape!
But in Christ, we must understand that every suffering is permitted by God; God wants us to know ourselves better in the midst of suffering, trust Him wholeheartedly, and let the best blessings come to us!

The Morning Devotion Speaker: Rev David Tan

Introduction:

As the saying goes: ‘If a worker wants to do a good job, he must first sharpen his tools. ’ People who are used by God will inevitably experience the trials and tribulations of life.

1. Why the righteous suffer for no reason (20:1-3)

Did David do something wrong? No. Did David say something wrong? No too. But David faced the hostility of King Saul to the point of death. Just because David made great contributions to the country and subdued the enemy for King Saul, he became a very popular person. Except for King Saul, who was compared to and became jealous and enmity, almost no one disliked David.

Speaking of why the righteous suffer? Standing at this end of history, we can fully understand that this is God’s training of David. And David also maintained a positive attitude of relying on God, so these sufferings allowed him to write a psalm that has become a classic in the Bible. As it is read in Psalm 39:9: ‘I was mute, I did not open my mouth, Because it was You who did it.’ This was really the test of David’s life. Suffering also showed that he was really a righteous man and showed the quality of a righteous man.

2. Good friend risks his life to accompany a nobleman (20:4-13)

Jonathan [know a hero and value a hero]! The two outstanding young talents became confidantes and friends. Knowing that David faced his father’s arrest, he would rather sacrifice his life to accompany the nobleman. It is the crime of deceiving the king to lie to his father for David. And secretly helped David escape the arrest of his father, isn’t this another capital crime? It wouldn’t have seen such true love between brothers if it weren’t for such a difficult time.

3. Alliance in God’s love (20:14-23)

Jonathan and David once again made an alliance before God, showing that God’s love was in their midst. Jonathan had already seen in his spirit that David would be the king of Israel in the future, so he said that Saul’s family should not be wiped out in the future. Sure enough, David was a man who kept his promise, so he treated Saul’s family, Jonathan’s only surviving son Mephibosheth. Thereafter, according to the agreed method, David was instructed to escape from the pursuit of King Saul.

4. Jealousy filled the heart and self- centredness (10:24-34)

Every new moon is the time of offering sacrifices, the day when the servants and the king had meals, and David did not appear on the first day. Saul didn’t think much about it and just regarded it as a usual reason for his absence, such as fighting and killing people, staining corpses and being unclean, etc. Unexpectedly, he still didn’t come the next day. After asking about Jonathan, he found out that he had allowed David to go on “leave”. King was furious that he disregarded for family and scolded his son with harsh words, knowing that he was protecting David. When asked why David deserved to die? Saul became so angry that he even wanted to kill his own son. It can be seen that rage can make people lose their minds and almost do stupid things!

A person without spirituality is even more selfish. On the surface, he implies that David will snatch his throne, meaning that the son is the future heir. But in a fit of rage, he even wanted to kill his son. It can be seen how self-centred Saul was.

5. Sharing weal and woe with sincerity (20:35-42)

Facing his ruthless father, Jonathan was helpless. Although David is a good brother with all his heart, in addition to instructing David to escape according to the agreed secret plan, Jonathan can only repeat the vows to each other, bless Shalom and bid farewell to his friend. Jonathan was a spiritual man. He realised that David would be king in the future. In fact, he was really a contender for his throne, but he showed true love of God.

Conclusion: The glory of Christ comes from the cross

The spiritual principle is always like this, only a life that undergoes trials can make life more abundant!

Proverb 31

06/08/2023

Proverbs 31

1 The words of King Lemuel, the utterance which his mother taught him:

2 What, my son? And what, son of my womb? And what, son of my vows?

3 Do not give your strength to women, Nor your ways to that which destroys kings.

4 It is not for kings, O Lemuel, It is not for kings to drink wine, Nor for princes intoxicating drink;

5 Lest they drink and forget the law, And pervert the justice of all the afflicted.

6 Give strong drink to him who is perishing, And wine to those who are bitter of heart.

7 Let him drink and forget his poverty, And remember his misery no more.

8 Open your mouth for the speechless, In the cause of all who are appointed to die.

9 Open your mouth, judge righteously, And plead the cause of the poor and needy.

10 Who can find a virtuous wife? For her worth is far above rubies.

11 The heart of her husband safely trusts her; So he will have no lack of gain.

12 She does him good and not evil All the days of her life.

13 She seeks wool and flax, And willingly works with her hands.

14 She is like the merchant ships, She brings her food from afar.

15 She also rises while it is yet night, And provides food for her household, And a portion for her maidservants.

16 She considers a field and buys it; From her profits she plants a vineyard.

17 She girds herself with strength, And strengthens her arms.

18 She perceives that her merchandise is good, And her lamp does not go out by night.

19 She stretches out her hands to the distaff, And her hand holds the spindle.

20 She extends her hand to the poor, Yes, she reaches out her hands to the needy.

21 She is not afraid of snow for her household, For all her household is clothed with scarlet.

22 She makes tapestry for herself; Her clothing is fine linen and purple.

23 Her husband is known in the gates, When he sits among the elders of the land.

24 She makes linen garments and sells them, And supplies sashes for the merchants.

25 Strength and honor are her clothing; She shall rejoice in time to come.

26 She opens her mouth with wisdom, And on her tongue is the law of kindness.

27 She watches over the ways of her household, And does not eat the bread of idleness.

28 Her children rise up and call her blessed; Her husband also, and he praises her:

29 “Many daughters have done well, But you excel them all.”

30 Charm is deceitful and beauty is passing, But a woman who fears the Lord, she shall be praised.

31 Give her of the fruit of her hands, And let her own works praise her in the gates.
