Proverb 30

Proverbs 30

1 The words of Agur the son of Jakeh, his utterance. This man declared to Ithiel–to Ithiel and Ucal:

2 Surely I am more stupid than any man, And do not have the understanding of a man.

3 I neither learned wisdom Nor have knowledge of the Holy One.

4 Who has ascended into heaven, or descended? Who has gathered the wind in His fists? Who has bound the waters in a garment? Who has established all the ends of the earth? What is His name, and what is His Son’s name, If you know?

5 Every word of God is pure; He is a shield to those who put their trust in Him.

6 Do not add to His words, Lest He rebuke you, and you be found a liar.

7 Two things I request of You (Deprive me not before I die):

8 Remove falsehood and lies far from me; Give me neither poverty nor riches– Feed me with the food allotted to me;

9 Lest I be full and deny You, And say, “Who is the Lord?” Or lest I be poor and steal, And profane the name of my God.

10 Do not malign a servant to his master, Lest he curse you, and you be found guilty.

11 There is a generation that curses its father, And does not bless its mother.

12 There is a generation that is pure in its own eyes, Yet is not washed from its filthiness.

13 There is a generation–oh, how lofty are their eyes! And their eyelids are lifted up.

14 There is a generation whose teeth are like swords, And whose fangs are like knives, To devour the poor from off the earth, And the needy from among men.

15 The leech has two daughters– Give and Give! There are three things that are never satisfied, Four never say, “Enough!”:

16 The grave, The barren womb, The earth that is not satisfied with water– And the fire never says, “Enough!”

17 The eye that mocks his father, And scorns obedience to his mother, The ravens of the valley will pick it out, And the young eagles will eat it.

18 There are three things which are too wonderful for me, Yes, four which I do not understand:

19 The way of an eagle in the air, The way of a serpent on a rock, The way of a ship in the midst of the sea, And the way of a man with a virgin.

20 This is the way of an adulterous woman: She eats and wipes her mouth, And says, “I have done no wickedness.”

21 For three things the earth is perturbed, Yes, for four it cannot bear up:

22 For a servant when he reigns, A fool when he is filled with food,

23 A hateful woman when she is married, And a maidservant who succeeds her mistress.

24 There are four things which are little on the earth, But they are exceedingly wise:

25 The ants are a people not strong, Yet they prepare their food in the summer;

26 The rock badgers are a feeble folk, Yet they make their homes in the crags;

27 The locusts have no king, Yet they all advance in ranks;

28 The spider skillfully grasps with its hands, And it is in kings’ palaces.

29 There are three things which are majestic in pace, Yes, four which are stately in walk:

30 A lion, which is mighty among beasts And does not turn away from any;

31 A greyhound, A male goat also, And a king whose troops are with him.

32 If you have been foolish in exalting yourself, Or if you have devised evil, put your hand on your mouth.

33 For as the churning of milk produces butter, And wringing the nose produces blood, So the forcing of wrath produces strife.

1 Samuel 19 With God’s protection, no one can hurt you
GK611 Morning Devotion

The Morning Devotion Speaker: Ps Deborah Tan

Introduction:Personal Protection Order

1. God’s protection through man (v1-17)

(1) Jonathan’s Reconciliation (v1-7)
When Saul openly stated that he wanted to kill David, Jonathan, as David’s confidant, not only told David to hide, but he also stood up to his father Saul and spoke favourably of David. And he forcefully pointed out that his father’s intention to kill David was an act of shedding innocent blood and taking his own sin before God. Saul also listened to Jonathan’s admonition and swore not to kill David.

When a crisis arrives, God will raise up people to be our helpers in the necessary moments to save us from being devoured and killed by our enemies. Furthermore, we are to follow Jonathan’s example and act as God’s bridge of reconciliation when we see our brothers and sisters in conflict or when someone comes to you with a complaint about someone. It is to reconcile and restore relationships.

(2) Michal’s blood and fleshly love (v11-16)

When David again defeated the Philistines again in another great defeat, Saul was again under the dominion of the devil. He sent men to spy on David at his house and threatened to kill him again. Michal, David’s new wife, loved David so much that she disobeyed her father’s order and let David down through the window; David was on the run. Although Michal loved her husband, she was a carnal person. She lied to Saul that David was sick by covering his bed with clothes and the idol of the house. When her father rebuked her, she lied again and again out of fear, which was actually inappropriate behaviour.

Brothers and sisters, do we compromise on the truth in order to love certain people? Or when under pressure or fear, do we lose our principles and make decisions that are not in accordance with the truth and are made out of blood and flesh?

(3) Samuel’s spiritual covering (v17)

David was pursued by Saul and came to Samuel at Ramah. God through Samuel gave David spiritual covering as he fled. The Holy Spirit also personally protected David from Saul’s pursuit. Spiritual covering is one of the protections that God gives to His children on earth.

2. Personal Protection through the Holy Spirit (v8-10, 19-24)

(1) Avoiding Demonic Attacks (v8-10)

David served Saul faithfully even though he knew that Saul wanted to kill him. Not only did he continue to destroy the Philistines, but when the demons came back upon Saul, David still wished to play the harp with his hands to deliver him. How could God not protect such a faithful and kind man? Because of God’s protection, v10 Saul tried to pin David with his spear, but the spear went into the wall and was nailed to the wall and could not hurt David.

(2) The Holy Spirit puts enemies to shame (v19-24)

Saul was overwhelmed by his desire to kill David. Even though the 3 groups of men he had sent had been stopped by the Spirit of God from killing David, he still did not recognize who his opponent was? He went to Naioth himself, and as a result, not only was he also inspired to speak prophetically, but he also stripped himself and lay there naked for a day and a night, making a fool of himself.

When a person continually resists God’s will, they end up with a self-inflicted self-humiliation. On the contrary, if we are God-fearing and walk in the will of God. Even if we are bullied and aggrieved. Just as the Spirit of God Himself saved David from his predicament, we must believe that the Holy Spirit will do justice for us and return justice to us.

Furthermore, Saul, who was full of envy, hatred and evil, was able to prophesy, so a very gifted person does not mean that his spiritual life is mature. But a mature life makes the gifts more fruitful. Therefore, we need to desire the gifts, but even more so, we need to pursue the life.

Conclusion: Choose to be protected by God

God has given a heavenly, 100% protection order to protect us. The key is to be 100% protected by God, we have to choose to align our lives with God. More than that, we have to be bridges like Jonathan and Samuel, so that God’s protection order can be extended to those in need. Let those we love also have God’s protection and no one can hurt them!

1 Samuel 18 Righteous heart vs. crooked heart
GK611 Morning Devotion
2/8/2023
The Morning Devotion Speaker: Co-worker Asher Chang

Introduction:If you are not right, you are crooked

1. David with a right heart

(1) A God-given confidant (V1-4)

Two men with God allied as life and death friends. They both fought for God’s name and relied on Him. Therefore, the two became very close and became very good friends. Jonathan didn’t even care about all the things he had as a prince, but shared them all with David, which was a very precious friendship.

(2) Experiences that elevate people’s hearts (V5)

After David killed the giant Goliath, he was promoted by Saul to the position of chief warrior. Saul’s servants and the people were very happy with David. David was invisible to everyone, but now they all saw David’s excellence. God promoted David, and even the women were happy for David.

(3) Smoothness and Prosperity in All Things (V13-16)

David continued to experience elevation with God. The people began to follow him in and out, and he became better and better and more and more shrewd, and the hearts of the people turned more and more to David! On the contrary, Saul kept on losing the hearts of the people.

(4) Victory in all things (V27)

No matter what problem he faced, David with God was always able to solve it, and better than expected.

(5) Honoured in the hearts of the people (V30)

David was upright, he submitted to authority and feared God, and the Spirit of God was with him. He had victory, peace, and honour in the hearts of the people.

2. Saul with a crooked heart

(1) Blinded by envy (V6-9)

Seeing David, who was so pleasing to the people, Saul’s heart began to twist, and he became very angry and envious of David. Feelings of jealousy can easily blind us, and even slowly eat away at our hearts, causing us to become hostile toward others.

(2) Greatly smitten by the devil (10-11)

Saul, who had a crooked heart, was greatly smitten by the devil, and he began to lose his mind and became motivated to kill. His heart was filled with fear and sin. On the other hand, David, who was with God, remained calm in the face of the assassination.

(3) No Peace but Fear (V12)

The reason for Saul’s fear of David was that he realised that the LORD had left him and was with David. Saul was bound by jealousy and his heart was filled with fear of losing his power and the hearts of the people. We too may face the temptation of jealousy in our hearts when we see the progress of others, but all we can do is to face it honestly and ask the Holy Spirit to help us to let God’s love fill us.

(4) Filled with Fear and Hatred (V17-26)

Saul promised his eldest daughter Merab to David, ostensibly to fulfill his promise, but his heart was full of hatred, and he only wanted to fulfill his plan to kill David.

(5) Fear and Fear Again in All Things (V28-29)

A crooked hearted life brings fear, like a snowball rolling, the more it rolls the more fear it accumulates. We need to be alert to connect with God and walk in His ways. Be like David, not afraid of losing the love of man, but more in awe of the love of God.

Conclusion: Righteous heart vs. crooked heart

A man with a right heart does things wisely, is with God, and wins the hearts of the people.
Those with crooked hearts are confused, with demons, and will be stigmatized for years to come.

Samuel 17 Am I a True Believer in God?
GK611 Morning Devotion
01/08/2023
The Morning Devotion Speaker: Ps. Daniel Kew

Introduction:

Let us reflect on our faith and trust in God through the lives of the three characters in this chapter: Goliath, Saul, and David.

1. Goliath with no God in his sight (V4-10, 48-51)

The giant Goliath defies the Israelites and the true God, Jehovah. When he saw David, he despised David and cursed David with his god. He was killed by a stone thrown by David and fell face down on the ground. Just like Dagon, the god of the Philistines, fell before the ark of the Lord, with his face on the ground.

The culture in the world is that the strong preys on the weak, between people and between countries, is full of mutual oppression and infighting. Therefore, we must be humble and vigilant, and not fall into the mentality of pride and oppression. And we should not be afraid of those who are of the flesh.

2. King Saul with no God in his heart (V11, 33)

Although Saul was the anointed king of Israel, he was a godless king. When Goliath came to challenge the Israelites, it was Saul who was most qualified to fight. However, because Saul had no god in his heart, Saul was terrified and frightened in front of the even bigger Goliath and lost his confidence and fighting spirit! Even the people of Israel were afraid, and no one dared to fight, and they were humiliated by Goliath for 40 days!

Saul’s failure was that he had God but did not know God and did not fear God in his heart. No matter how serious a sin is, it can be forgiven, but the sin of not knowing God cannot be forgiven, because you don’t know how to ask God for forgiveness! Saul’s foolish failure is a stern warning to all, especially Christians!

3. David who truly trusted in God

(1) Unaffected by people (V26)

David arrived at the battlefield to greet his brothers but was misunderstood and accused by his brothers. Belittled by Saul, he was too young to defeat a giant warrior. Goliath even despised him and said that he would feed him to the birds. But David was not affected, he still stood up and fought for the living God.

(2) Have experience in the past (V33-35)

David looked back and realised that the same God who saved him in the past will save him now and in the future. Shepherding in the wilderness was God equipping David and giving him the experience of killing lions and bears.

(3) With confidence now (V36-40)

David is now confident that he will kill Goliath as he killed the lion and the bear. David didn’t wear armour and weapons but only picked five stones and his action against Goliath is true faith!

(4) Relying on God to fight the giant (V41-51)

In the face of the great enemy, David had no fear and easily killed the giant Goliath with a stone and used Goliath’s knife to cut off Goliath’s head. David relied on the Lord Almighty!

We should imitate David, don’t be afraid of being despised by others, don’t be afraid of any environment and enemies, and be ready at any time to enter God’s leading.

Conclusion:

We have seen Goliath who has no God in his sight, and Saul who has no God in his heart, are not as good as David, because David truly believed in God!
If we truly trust God, no matter what circumstances or people we encounter, we must maintain joy and peace, and don’t live in worry and fear! A person who truly trusts in God is also an overcomer!

1 Samuel 16 God is the scriptwriter and director of Life on Stage
GK611 Morning Devotion
28/7/2023
The Morning Devotion Speaker: Rev David Tan

Introduction:

A wonderful movie often has unexpected creativity and varied scripts; isn’t the stage of life like this?

1. God will replace the vessel with a new one (16:1)

(1) Don’t be a king detested by God (V1a)

The prophet Isaiah once said: “The God of wisdom… will not call back His words…” (Isaiah 31:2). The apostle Paul also said: ” For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable.” (Romans 11:29) However, here we see that God rejected Saul, whom He had originally chosen. We know from the previous chapter that the reason was Saul’s disobedience. We must pay attention to our mentality and our reaction to those in authority, so as not to be rejected by God like Saul!

(2) To be God’s chosen ones (V1b)

There are lessons to be learned from both Samuel and David. When Samuel was going to find a new king, God didn’t directly say who that person was? Only when people get up and take action can they be discovered slowly. Isn’t this the mode of interaction between God and man? Moreover, among the eight brothers of Jesse’s family, David was not an outstanding child; but perhaps his simplicity and trust in God became the reason why he was chosen by God. In the process of life, there are lessons for us to learn from God in everything.

2. The way to choose and anoint a new king (16:2-13)

(1) The prophet seeks in every step (V2-5)

When Saul was still in power, the prophet wanted to anoint a new king. This was a great act of rebellion, wasn’t it? Behaviour that does not conform to the reality, so the prophet needs to act step by step according to God’s instructions.

When we are faced with judgments on major events in our lives, how can we not pay attention to seek God’s instructions and guidance?

(2) Inquire one by one on the ground (V6-10)

Why didn’t God directly tell the prophet that David, the youngest son, was the new king he was going to anoint, but had to go and check them one by one? In terms of appearance, the eldest son was tall and mighty, and he looked like a king at first glance, but God said no! Therefore, it brings out the difference between the eyes of man and the eyes of God. Man sees the appearance and God sees the heart. God does not judge people by appearance, and we must also learn from God’s perspective.

(3) Don’t miss the kid (V11-13)

David was very young at the time and seemed not to be valued by his father. In such a solemn feast of a prophet’s visit, how could David not be included in the plan? Don’t you know that David is God’s chosen vessel. In the end, David experienced being anointed and led by the Holy Spirit, and continued to move towards his destiny in life.

3. God is the stage director of life (16:14-23)

(1) Anointing left, demon invades (V14)

After David received the king’s anointing, the original “king’s anointing” of the Holy Spirit was transferred to David. And once Saul lost the Spirit of God, the evil spirits immediately had the authority to invade Saul and disturb Saul. It can be seen from this that Christians who have the presence of the Holy Spirit are wonderful, because once people lose the presence of God, the evil one will take control of people’s lives at any time.

(2) Harp and music chase away demons (V15-17)

Playing music can drive away evil spirits? Is it some instrument or some piece of music? Obviously not, but the person who plays the instrument, and the content of the music is related to the presence of God’s glorious power. Some people may have seen David playing with the glory of God’s presence, even the evil spirits could not stand. So, he had this opportunity and recommended it to King Saul. Just like blowing a shofar is also a spiritual instrument and weapon, with the anointing and power of the Holy Spirit behind it.

(3) God prepared to introduce David (V17-23)

Samuel’s anointing David is one aspect of David’s stage of life; King Saul being disturbed by evil spirits is another aspect of Saul’s stage of life, and the two have nothing to do with each other. But God has long seen that David, a God-fearing vessel, will one day replace Saul, and when the time comes, God will let the two be drawn together. For future needs, the same stage will appear at this time. Sure enough, David started to contact King Saul for the future throne.

There are many coincidences in stage of life, but they appeared for future needs! We need to live under the guidance of God all the time.

Conclusion: Actors who interact freely with the scriptwriter and director

Although God is the scriptwriter and director of life on the stage, we are the actors in it. But the director of life gives us the right to freely choose the way to play. What kind of development and ending we want depends on how we choose and cooperate with the requirements of the “greatest scriptwriter and director of life”.

Proverbs 29

1 He who is often rebuked, and hardens his neck, Will suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy.

2 When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan.

3 Whoever loves wisdom makes his father rejoice, But a companion of harlots wastes his wealth.

4 The king establishes the land by justice, But he who receives bribes overthrows it.

5 A man who flatters his neighbor Spreads a net for his feet.

6 By transgression an evil man is snared, But the righteous sings and rejoices.

7 The righteous considers the cause of the poor, But the wicked does not understand such knowledge.

8 Scoffers set a city aflame, But wise men turn away wrath.

9 If a wise man contends with a foolish man, Whether the fool rages or laughs, there is no peace.

10 The bloodthirsty hate the blameless, But the upright seek his well-being.

11 A fool vents all his feelings, But a wise man holds them back.

12 If a ruler pays attention to lies, All his servants become wicked.

13 The poor man and the oppressor have this in common: The Lord gives light to the eyes of both.

14 The king who judges the poor with truth, His throne will be established forever.

15 The rod and rebuke give wisdom, But a child left to himself brings shame to his mother.

16 When the wicked are multiplied, transgression increases; But the righteous will see their fall.

17 Correct your son, and he will give you rest; Yes, he will give delight to your soul.

18 Where there is no revelation, the people cast off restraint; But happy is he who keeps the law.

19 A servant will not be corrected by mere words; For though he understands, he will not respond.

20 Do you see a man hasty in his words? There is more hope for a fool than for him.

21 He who pampers his servant from childhood Will have him as a son in the end.

22 An angry man stirs up strife, And a furious man abounds in transgression.

23 A man’s pride will bring him low, But the humble in spirit will retain honor.

24 Whoever is a partner with a thief hates his own life; He swears to tell the truth, but reveals nothing.

25 The fear of man brings a snare, But whoever trusts in the Lord shall be safe.

26 Many seek the ruler’s favor, But justice for man comes from the Lord.

27 An unjust man is an abomination to the righteous, And he who is upright in the way is an abomination to the wicked.

Proverb 28

30/07/2023

Proverbs 28

1 The wicked flee when no one pursues, But the righteous are bold as a lion.

2 Because of the transgression of a land, many are its princes; But by a man of understanding and knowledge Right will be prolonged.

3 A poor man who oppresses the poor Is like a driving rain which leaves no food.

4 Those who forsake the law praise the wicked, But such as keep the law contend with them.

5 Evil men do not understand justice, But those who seek the Lord understand all.

6 Better is the poor who walks in his integrity Than one perverse in his ways, though he be rich.

7 Whoever keeps the law is a discerning son, But a companion of gluttons shames his father.

8 One who increases his possessions by usury and extortion Gathers it for him who will pity the poor.

9 One who turns away his ear from hearing the law, Even his prayer is an abomination.

10 Whoever causes the upright to go astray in an evil way, He himself will fall into his own pit; But the blameless will inherit good.

11 The rich man is wise in his own eyes, But the poor who has understanding searches him out.

12 When the righteous rejoice, there is great glory; But when the wicked arise, men hide themselves.

13 He who covers his sins will not prosper, But whoever confesses and forsakes them will have mercy.

14 Happy is the man who is always reverent, But he who hardens his heart will fall into calamity.

15 Like a roaring lion and a charging bear Is a wicked ruler over poor people.

16 A ruler who lacks understanding is a great oppressor, But he who hates covetousness will prolong his days.

17 A man burdened with bloodshed will flee into a pit; Let no one help him.

18 Whoever walks blamelessly will be saved, But he who is perverse in his ways will suddenly fall.

19 He who tills his land will have plenty of bread, But he who follows frivolity will have poverty enough!

20 A faithful man will abound with blessings, But he who hastens to be rich will not go unpunished.

21 To show partiality is not good, Because for a piece of bread a man will transgress.

22 A man with an evil eye hastens after riches, And does not consider that poverty will come upon him.

23 He who rebukes a man will find more favor afterward Than he who flatters with the tongue.

24 Whoever robs his father or his mother, And says, “It is no transgression,” The same is companion to a destroyer.

25 He who is of a proud heart stirs up strife, But he who trusts in the Lord will be prospered.

26 He who trusts in his own heart is a fool, But whoever walks wisely will be delivered.

27 He who gives to the poor will not lack, But he who hides his eyes will have many curses.

28 When the wicked arise, men hide themselves; But when they perish, the righteous increase.

Proverb 27

29/07/2023

Proverbs 27

1 Do not boast about tomorrow, For you do not know what a day may bring forth.

2 Let another man praise you, and not your own mouth; A stranger, and not your own lips.

3 A stone is heavy and sand is weighty, But a fool’s wrath is heavier than both of them.

4 Wrath is cruel and anger a torrent, But who is able to stand before jealousy?

5 Open rebuke is better Than love carefully concealed.

6 Faithful are the wounds of a friend, But the kisses of an enemy are deceitful.

7 A satisfied soul loathes the honeycomb, But to a hungry soul every bitter thing is sweet.

8 Like a bird that wanders from its nest Is a man who wanders from his place.

9 Ointment and perfume delight the heart, And the sweetness of a man’s friend gives delight by hearty counsel.

10 Do not forsake your own friend or your father’s friend, Nor go to your brother’s house in the day of your calamity; Better is a neighbor nearby than a brother far away.

11 My son, be wise, and make my heart glad, That I may answer him who reproaches me.

12 A prudent man foresees evil and hides himself; The simple pass on and are punished.

13 Take the garment of him who is surety for a stranger, And hold it in pledge when he is surety for a seductress.

14 He who blesses his friend with a loud voice, rising early in the morning, It will be counted a curse to him.

15 A continual dripping on a very rainy day And a contentious woman are alike;

16 Whoever restrains her restrains the wind, And grasps oil with his right hand.

17 As iron sharpens iron, So a man sharpens the countenance of his friend.

18 Whoever keeps the fig tree will eat its fruit; So he who waits on his master will be honored.

19 As in water face reflects face, So a man’s heart reveals the man.

20 Hell and Destruction are never full; So the eyes of man are never satisfied.

21 The refining pot is for silver and the furnace for gold, And a man is valued by what others say of him.

22 Though you grind a fool in a mortar with a pestle along with crushed grain, Yet his foolishness will not depart from him.

23 Be diligent to know the state of your flocks, And attend to your herds;

24 For riches are not forever, Nor does a crown endure to all generations.

25 When the hay is removed, and the tender grass shows itself, And the herbs of the mountains are gathered in,

26 The lambs will provide your clothing, And the goats the price of a field;

27 You shall have enough goats’ milk for your food, For the food of your household, And the nourishment of your maidservants.

1 Samuel 15 The Actions and Ending of Disobedient People
GK611 Morning Devotion
27/7/2023
The Morning Devotion Speaker: Ps Stella Ling

Introduction:When a person is continually rebellious and disobedient, he will face the consequences of his rebellion.

1. God who did not listen to the anointed man (v1-3, 9)

The Lord’s command was for Saul to smite and destroy all the Amalekites. Exterminate and purify means “to offer completely and to destroy completely,” indicating that the people should give their victory completely to God. Therefore, all of the spoils of war must be set apart and sanctified to God, and neither people nor things must be left behind. However, Saul’s disobedience once again, not fully carrying out the Lord’s command to destroy the Amalekites (v9), resulted in him being stripped of his throne.

2. Obeying the flesh over God (v4-13)

God told Saul to kill all the Amalekites, men and women, children and sucklings, oxen, sheep, camels, and donkeys. But Saul had compassion on Agag, king of the Amalekites, and he loved good cattle, sheep, calves, lambs, and all good things.

Saul then claimed, “I have performed the commandment of the Lord.” (v. 13), but he didn’t realise that when he selectively did what God commanded, it still actually meant that he didn’t keep God’s commands. We should always reflect on whether our obedience to God is also total obedience or selective obedience.

3. Repeatedly quibbling and denying wrongdoing (v14-23)

Saul did not take God as his king, was unwilling to obey Him, and disobeyed God’s commands yet still plausibly used religious terms and rituals to cover up his behaviour just to gain the approval of others, even God. Samuel pointed out directly that his behaviour was no different from idolatry, as he used religious means to satisfy his own selfish desires.

God gave Saul several opportunities to repent and turn to God, but Saul did not take them, so that he ushered in the consequences of being rejected by God.

4. Fearing men but not God (v24-31)

When men do not fear God, they will fear men. Though Saul had sinned against God, his concern was not for God’s forgiveness, but for the fear that if Samuel did not join him in offering sacrifices, he would lose the adoration of the people, and so he said, “Please forgive me my sins”. We see that Saul was only pursuing a superficial relationship, not a real relationship with God.

How is our relationship with God?

5. Unwillingness to Follow and Abandon by God (v32-35)

Saul was a man of the flesh and refused to be separated from it. For from the beginning to the end, we do not see Saul repenting of the evil he had done. And God regretted and rejected the disobedient Saul as king.

God does not easily reject any man, but man rejects God first. We need to reflect on what our hearts are following. What do we want? Hopefully, our hearts are to follow God closely.

Conclusion:

Brothers and sisters, let us not fall into Saul’s kind of falsehood and selfishness, and sincerely face our own struggles and shortcomings in faith, always looking to the mighty Lord. When we fall, we should learn to go to God openly to repent and ask for forgiveness, and not to cover up or shift our responsibilities. Pray that the Lord will lead us to live victorious and powerful lives!

Introduction:Seeing the heart of man in crisis

1. The Prince who is with faith and won the heart of the people: Jonathan (V1-15, 45)

(1) Faith is not to look at man but to God (V1-7)

Jonathan recognised that it was God’s definition to save the people of Israel and to fight for them, so his attention was not on the number of men, but on the presence of God.

(2) Faith does not look at logic, but seeks God (V8-15)

The cliff Jonathan and his followers climbed over was not an easy road. It required both courage and skill. Jonathan used the anomalous situation as evidence that God had opened the way. For in a logical situation, the Philistines should have asked Jonathan to stay where he was, not let them climb the cliff to get closer to themselves.

(3) Gaining the hearts of the people and surviving (V45)

Jonathan knew God, understood God’s heart, and sympathised with the people’s hardship. He won the hearts of the people, and in the end Jonathan saved his life because the people tried to dissuade Saul.

2. The king of false faith and false reverence: King Saul (V16-44, 46)

(1) Asking God according to the situation (V16-23)

Saul was going to ask God, but when he saw the situation of the Philistines, he felt sure and commanded the priests to stop. To him, God was only a tool to be used and served men, to be asked when needed, but cast aside when not needed; to ask God about things he was not sure of, but to listen to himself when he was sure.

(2) Ministry that relies on flesh (V24-30)

Saul freely asked God and rashly stopped to ask God, but here again, he freely made the people swear an oath. This oath was also just a false appearance, as if they feared God, but in fact, doing such a thing at this time weakened the morale and strength of the people.

(3) Fake reverence (V31-35)

Saul tried again and again to show that he feared God, but continually showed his own
inconsistency of character. Here the building of the altar, which appeared to be seeking God, was in fact relying on the flesh, for soon he was proposing strategies for himself first, and was reminded by the priest to ask God first.

(4) Obsession with power and popularity (V36-44)

God did not answer Saul’s prayer, but instead of examining his own behaviour, he kept on assuming that it was the people who had sinned, and kept on pulling the trigger. In the end, he almost killed his own innocent son, Jonathan.

(5) Obstructing God’s work (V46)

It was Saul who wanted to go to war, and it was he who finally went back and did not pursue the Philistines because of the opposition of the people. The Philistines went back to their homeland (V46). It is clear that God had placed the Philistines in the hands of Israel, but this was the end. Because Saul was following his own will and hindering God’s work, not only did he lose God’s presence, but he was also resisting God.

(6) A man who relies on might and power (V47-52)

The Scripture records Saul’s contacts in the land, and when he met a man of power, he called to follow him. It is evident that he recruited only those who were of benefit to him. Relying on himself is not God.

Conclusion: Receiving power by relying on God, powerless by relying on self

Jonathan trusted God, but Saul always relied on his own decisions, and they lived very different lives. If we keep our hearts well and follow God closely, we believe that our lives will be full of courage and will influence many people.time is right.
