1 Samuel 13 Relying on God to Face Crisis Situations
GK611 Morning Devotion

25/7/2023

The Morning Devotion Speaker: Ps Daniel Kew

Introduction:

In this chapter, Saul revealed his spiritual weakness. He relied on human strength, not on Jehovah.

1. Fear arises in the heart, rely more on God (V1-7)

The Israelites were ready to fight, but when they saw that the Philistine soldiers were as numerous as the sand on the seashore, the Israelites felt their danger, and they began to be afraid. They hurriedly hid in caves, jungles, rocky caves, secret places and pits.

From time to time in our lives, situations such as the Israelites encountered critical situations that threatened our lives, property, or everything we hold dear. What we have to do at this time is not to be caught by this feeling of fear and powerlessness, or to rely on past experiences and habits. We must choose to come before the Lord and trust Him more! Because the opposite of ‘faith’’ is ‘fear’!

2. Follow God’s command and not be confused (V8-15)

Saul could not wait until Samuel came to offer the sacrifice, so he offered the sacrifice as king. Saul’s failure was because he disobeyed God, fearing that he would lose the morale of the army, so he acted foolishly according to his own judgment, instead of obeying God’s command. Moreover, when confronted with Samuel’s questioning, he not only did not repent of his mistakes, but even justified his ignorance. This is like the situation in the age of the judges, who did not regard Jehovah as king, did not obey Jehovah’s commands, and acted as they pleased. So Saul’s throne will not last long and will be replaced.

Seeing Saul’s failure, we should be vigilant not to act foolishly according to our own will. When it is pointed out that we have done wrong things against God’s will, we should confess our sins to God and others, and God will be with us. Only those who obey God’s commands are those who are after God’s heart.

3. The best weapon – rely on God (V16-23)

Now we see that God allowed the Philistines to have a far superiority over the Israelites in terms of numbers and weapons, in order to let the Israelites understand that to win the war, the best weapon is to rely on God!

What is the greatest weapon you have? Is it money? Wisdom? …or, like the Israelites, without any weapons?

1 Samuel 17:47 “the LORD does not save with sword and spear; for the battle is the LORD’s,” Therefore, relying on God is the best weapon, because to have God is to have everything! As long as we love God wholeheartedly and obey God’s will, God will accomplish things beyond what we ask and think!

Conclusion:

When Saul was in a critical situation, his fear caused him to disobey God’s command and make an unwise decision. Do we still trust God and still have the option to obey God’s Word when we are in a crisis situation?

Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit, says the LORD of hosts.

1 Samuel 12 Fear and Serve the True King
GK611 Morning Devotion
21/7/2023
The Morning Devotion Speakers: Ps. Daniel Kew

Introduction: Who Is Our King?

1. A Good Testimony of Faithful Service (V1-5)

Samuel officially handed over the responsibility of leading the people to Saul, the first king of Israel. Here he also made a summary of his past ministry. Through the recognition of his clean hands and pure heart by all the people in Israel, and the testimony of God, it proves that he is a man who serves God devoutly and faithfully. This reminds us, whether we can also stand up to others’ appraisal of our service. How does God testify of our service?

2. Affirm that salvation is from God (V6-11)

This scripture states that whenever the people of Israel call on God in distress, God will hear and immediately send a saviour to their midst. He is the King who really makes them dwell in peace.

3. Jehovah is your King (V12-19)

(1) The king chosen by man is appointed by God (V12-15)

Samuel wanted the people of Israel to understand that the king they asked for was appointed by God. Therefore, the kings of the earth like all men must obey God and accept God’s control. No matter where we are today, we must remember that we are all under God’s control.

(2) Demanding a king is a great sin (V16-19)

Once again, Samuel wanted to let the people know that their establishment of a king was a great offence to God, so he asked God for a miracle of “thunder and rain”. Because when the wheat is harvested, thunder and rain are rare. God used signs to confirm Samuel’s words, and the people committed a great sin by not wanting God to be their king.

We must take God as our king and follow the real king! Don’t follow the world’s values.

4. Serve with reverence and dedication wholeheartedly (V20-24)

Although God has been abandoned by His people, and for the sake of his great name the LORD will not reject his people. So, Samuel taught the people how to respond to God:

(1) Not be forsaken if do not deviate from God (V20-22)
(2) Teachable, do good deeds and follow the right path (V23)
(3) Fear God and serve God wholeheartedly (V24a)
(4) Remember the great things God has done (V24b)

Today we must also follow and serve God according to the above 4 points, and count God’s deeds at all times. When people forget about God’s grace, it is easy to leave God. We must recognise that what we want to serve is Jehovah God!

Conclusion: If you continue to do evil, you and your king will perish together (V25)

Samuel explained to the Israelites that if they continued to do evil – not honouring God as king, they and their king would perish together! Know that Jehovah is their real king! He also exhorted the people to fear and serve God.

God treats us the same today. If we are weak and fail, God will not abandon us. As long as we believe that God is the King of our lives, and serve Him with reverence wholeheartedly and with dedication, we will surely be chosen like Saul! Be promoted!

Proverb 26

24/07/2023

Proverbs 26

1 As snow in summer and rain in harvest, So honor is not fitting for a fool.

2 Like a flitting sparrow, like a flying swallow, So a curse without cause shall not alight.

3 A whip for the horse, A bridle for the donkey, And a rod for the fool’s back.

4 Do not answer a fool according to his folly, Lest you also be like him.

5 Answer a fool according to his folly, Lest he be wise in his own eyes.

6 He who sends a message by the hand of a fool Cuts off his own feet and drinks violence.

7 Like the legs of the lame that hang limp Is a proverb in the mouth of fools.

8 Like one who binds a stone in a sling Is he who gives honor to a fool.

9 Like a thorn that goes into the hand of a drunkard Is a proverb in the mouth of fools.

10 The great God who formed everything Gives the fool his hire and the transgressor his wages.

11 As a dog returns to his own vomit, So a fool repeats his folly.

12 Do you see a man wise in his own eyes? There is more hope for a fool than for him.

13 The lazy man says, “There is a lion in the road! A fierce lion is in the streets!”

14 As a door turns on its hinges, So does the lazy man on his bed.

15 The lazy man buries his hand in the bowl; It wearies him to bring it back to his mouth.

16 The lazy man is wiser in his own eyes Than seven men who can answer sensibly.

17 He who passes by and meddles in a quarrel not his own Is like one who takes a dog by the ears.

18 Like a madman who throws firebrands, arrows, and death,

19 Is the man who deceives his neighbor, And says, “I was only joking!”

20 Where there is no wood, the fire goes out; And where there is no talebearer, strife ceases.

21 As charcoal is to burning coals, and wood to fire, So is a contentious man to kindle strife.

22 The words of a talebearer are like tasty trifles, And they go down into the inmost body.

23 Fervent lips with a wicked heart Are like earthenware covered with silver dross.

24 He who hates, disguises it with his lips, And lays up deceit within himself;

25 When he speaks kindly, do not believe him, For there are seven abominations in his heart;

26 Though his hatred is covered by deceit, His wickedness will be revealed before the assembly.

27 Whoever digs a pit will fall into it, And he who rolls a stone will have it roll back on him.

28 A lying tongue hates those who are crushed by it, And a flattering mouth works ruin.

Proverb 25

23/07/2023

Proverbs 25

1 These also are proverbs of Solomon which the men of Hezekiah king of Judah copied:

2 It is the glory of God to conceal a matter, But the glory of kings is to search out a matter.

3 As the heavens for height and the earth for depth, So the heart of kings is unsearchable.

4 Take away the dross from silver, And it will go to the silversmith for jewelry.

5 Take away the wicked from before the king, And his throne will be established in righteousness.

6 Do not exalt yourself in the presence of the king, And do not stand in the place of the great;

7 For it is better that he say to you, “Come up here,” Than that you should be put lower in the presence of the prince, Whom your eyes have seen.

8 Do not go hastily to court; For what will you do in the end, When your neighbor has put you to shame?

9 Debate your case with your neighbor, And do not disclose the secret to another;

10 Lest he who hears it expose your shame, And your reputation be ruined.

11 A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold In settings of silver.

12 Like an earring of gold and an ornament of fine gold Is a wise rebuker to an obedient ear.

13 Like the cold of snow in time of harvest Is a faithful messenger to those who send him, For he refreshes the soul of his masters.

14 Whoever falsely boasts of giving Is like clouds and wind without rain.

15 By long forbearance a ruler is persuaded, And a gentle tongue breaks a bone.

16 Have you found honey? Eat only as much as you need, Lest you be filled with it and vomit.

17 Seldom set foot in your neighbor’s house, Lest he become weary of you and hate you.

18 A man who bears false witness against his neighbor Is like a club, a sword, and a sharp arrow.

19 Confidence in an unfaithful man in time of trouble Is like a bad tooth and a foot out of joint.

20 Like one who takes away a garment in cold weather, And like vinegar on soda, Is one who sings songs to a heavy heart.

21 If your enemy is hungry, give him bread to eat; And if he is thirsty, give him water to drink;

22 For so you will heap coals of fire on his head, And the Lord will reward you.

23 The north wind brings forth rain, And a backbiting tongue an angry countenance.

24 It is better to dwell in a corner of a housetop, Than in a house shared with a contentious woman.

25 As cold water to a weary soul, So is good news from a far country.

26 A righteous man who falters before the wicked Is like a murky spring and a polluted well.

27 It is not good to eat much honey; So to seek one’s own glory is not glory.

28 Whoever has no rule over his own spirit Is like a city broken down, without walls.

Proverbs 24

1 Do not be envious of evil men, Nor desire to be with them;

2 For their heart devises violence, And their lips talk of troublemaking.

3 Through wisdom a house is built, And by understanding it is established;

4 By knowledge the rooms are filled With all precious and pleasant riches.

5 A wise man is strong, Yes, a man of knowledge increases strength;

6 For by wise counsel you will wage your own war, And in a multitude of counselors there is safety.

7 Wisdom is too lofty for a fool; He does not open his mouth in the gate.

8 He who plots to do evil Will be called a schemer.

9 The devising of foolishness is sin, And the scoffer is an abomination to men.

10 If you faint in the day of adversity, Your strength is small.

11 Deliver those who are drawn toward death, And hold back those stumbling to the slaughter.

12 If you say, “Surely we did not know this,” Does not He who weighs the hearts consider it? He who keeps your soul, does He not know it? And will He not render to each man according to his deeds?

13 My son, eat honey because it is good, And the honeycomb which is sweet to your taste;

14 So shall the knowledge of wisdom be to your soul; If you have found it, there is a prospect, And your hope will not be cut off.

15 Do not lie in wait, O wicked man, against the dwelling of the righteous; Do not plunder his resting place;

16 For a righteous man may fall seven times And rise again, But the wicked shall fall by calamity.

17 Do not rejoice when your enemy falls, And do not let your heart be glad when he stumbles;

18 Lest the Lord see it, and it displease Him, And He turn away His wrath from him.

19 Do not fret because of evildoers, Nor be envious of the wicked;

20 For there will be no prospect for the evil man; The lamp of the wicked will be put out.

21 My son, fear the Lord and the king; Do not associate with those given to change;

22 For their calamity will rise suddenly, And who knows the ruin those two can bring?

23 These things also belong to the wise: It is not good to show partiality in judgment.

24 He who says to the wicked, “You are righteous,” Him the people will curse; Nations will abhor him.

25 But those who rebuke the wicked will have delight, And a good blessing will come upon them.

26 He who gives a right answer kisses the lips.

27 Prepare your outside work, Make it fit for yourself in the field; And afterward build your house.

28 Do not be a witness against your neighbor without cause, For would you deceive with your lips?

29 Do not say, “I will do to him just as he has done to me; I will render to the man according to his work.”

30 I went by the field of the lazy man, And by the vineyard of the man devoid of understanding;

31 And there it was, all overgrown with thorns; Its surface was covered with nettles; Its stone wall was broken down.

32 When I saw it, I considered it well; I looked on it and received instruction:

33 A little sleep, a little slumber, A little folding of the hands to rest;

34 So shall your poverty come like a prowler, And your need like an armed man.

1 Samuel 11: Seize the Moment to Courageously Respond
GK611 Morning Devotion
20/7/2023
The Morning Devotion Speaker: Ps. Deborah

Introduction: Recycling Mineral Water Bottles

1. Seize the moment to reverse the crisis (v1-4)

Since Jephthah’s defeat of the Ammonites, they had not attacked Israel for quite some time. But at this time, it was clearly by the hand of God that the Ammonites suddenly camped against Gilead Jabesh and challenged the Israelites. Let the people of Israel and King Saul face this great crisis and learn a lesson from it. Let us also examine ourselves in the light of their response. What would be our chosen response in the face of a crisis?

(1) Not running away and surrender ourselves to our fate (v1-3)

First of all, we see that the first response of the Gileadites when faced with a crisis was to surrender, to make a covenant with their enemies and to be their servants.
Brothers and sisters, are we also like the Gileadites? When faced with a crisis, do we choose to run away and surrender to our fate without even trying? If so, we will never see any turnaround in a crisis.

(2) Focus on God (v4)

When the Jabezites told the people about the enemy’s threats, all the people let out their voices and wept. Why did the people cry? Because there was no God in their hearts. Not only had they forgotten how God had led them out of Egypt, across the Red Sea, and into Canaan. They had even forgotten about Ebenezer, who had led them to defeat the Philistines just a short time before. They saw the enemy, and they saw that the problem was very big. But God was not in their hearts. Fear and despair gripped their hearts and caused them to weep. Focus on God when a crisis arises.

2. Courageously fight and crisis turns into opportunity (v5-11)

(1) Spirit-filled courage and courageously fight (v5-7)

When Saul returned from the field and found out the reason for Israel’s weeping, he was immediately touched by the Spirit of God and initiated God’s righteous anger because of Nahash’s arrogance and bullying. Saul, who was originally timid, took up the authority given by God and courageously called upon all the people of Israel to rise up and fight.

Therefore, brothers and sisters, whether it is spiritual warfare or our ministry, how important it is to have the filling of the Holy Spirit. When the Spirit of God moves us to do something, even though we find it challenging, we have to be courageous to seize the opportunity to break through in our lives.

In addition, we know that 300 years ago, because of the evil caused by the Gibeathites, that Levite cut the body of his concubine into twelve pieces and incited all of Israel to come and attack Gibeah. Today, God told Saul to use a similar method to cut the ox into pieces and send it to all the territory of Israel, calling all Israel to come out to resist foreign enemies and protect their compatriots, with the purpose of shedding shame for the previous scandal of Gibeah. That is, to get them up from where they had fallen.

Brothers and sisters, have you ever stumbled in any place ? Feeling ashamed to face yourself? God wants you to boldly rely on Him for victory and healing.

(2) As one man triumphs (v8-11)

Because of God’s strategy, the presence of the Holy Spirit, and the unity of all Israel as one man, we see that the entire battle was easily won.

3. Belittle hurts and the king is with demeanour (v12-15)

(2) Looking beyond the hurt (v12-13)

When Saul won the battle, some suggested that those who had looked down on Saul should be killed.

There are a couple of reminders:
1) Don’t flatter when you see that things are going well there.
2) When wounded, the enemy will seek revenge on us in many ways. Don’t be tempted so that you return an eye for an eye.
3) We need to look beyond the hurt. See what God is trying to do in us or in others.

(2) Being made king (v14-15)

Saul led Israel to victory over the Ammonites and was generous again. So Samuel brought him to Gilead to set up his kingdom. And formally made Saul king before God and all the people.

Conclusion: Times make heroes

There can be no heroes without crisis and adversity. When danger or crisis comes to us, it is a time for God to improve the quality of our lives and expand the influence of our lives. Let us all learn to know the heart of God better. Seize the moment to respond courageously. Keep up with God’s rhythm, go forward when you encounter it, and although there is fear in my heart, when I respond courageously, harden my heart, and seize the moment to do it while it’s still possible, God is going to use us greatly to greatly manifest His glory.

1 Samuel 10 : Living the life of election while do as the occasion demands
GK611 Morning Devotion
19/7/2023
The Morning Devotion Speaker: Co-worker Asher Chang

Introduction: Do as the occasion demands, don’t turn a blind eye to it.

The original meaning of the phrase “do while you have time” is to do what your hand finds, what your hand encounters, meaning to do what needs to be done.

1. Anointing Saul: God’s Rise and Guidance (V1-16)

(1) Receive the anointing and prophecy (V1-8)

When Saul was anointed to enter into the chosen destiny, God continued to give him prophecies and testimonies. Because God was mindful of Saul’s concerns, He provided all that Saul needed.

(2) The Holy Spirit moved him to a new heart (V9-13)

When Saul was touched by the Spirit of God, God gave him a new heart and made him a brand new person. His life was no longer the same, and he was even moved to speak as if his life had been elevated.

(3) Humble and obedient, waiting for the right time (V14-16)

Saul did not proclaim his anointing in a high profile, but chose to keep a low profile and wait for God’s timing.

Summary:

Saul experienced an anointing, a filling of the Holy Spirit, a new life, and was chosen to be the leader of a new generation, which was a good start for him. But unfortunately he did not work for God according to His time Saul was a different man in the early days of his reign. He grew in power but grew in pride. Later, when he refused to seek God, the Spirit of God left him and he lost his power.

2. Signing Saul as the Leader of a New Generation: God’s Love (V17-27)

(1) God gives the people a final choice (V17-19)

God still had Samuel remind the people of Israel of how God had saved them, and still let the people choose whether or not to set up a king to rule over them.

(2) People still cannot see God’s love (V20-22)

The people of Israel still could not see that God was the great King of Israel, but preferred to make a man king who they had never seen before, and even asked God where that man was.

They did not see it, and neither did Saul, who was chosen by God, but hid himself. He could have stood up and persuaded them, as Samuel did, not to forsake God and make a new king. But he hid himself in the armory, and did not act in the time, nor did he follow the signs, but embraced arms and power. He loved kingship, not the Word of God, which is human nature.

(3) Men care only for what they see with their own eyes (V23-24)

They saw Saul was taller than any of the people from his shoulders upward, and cried out with joy, “Long live the king!” No one saw that God who is higher than man.

(4) God fulfills the choices made by man (V25)

God’s merciful love, in the end, let them have their way.

(5) Leader Confronts all sorts of people (V26-27)

When leaders are raised up, some are followed and some are despised. Saul was faced with exactly what God felt, there were those who followed God and even more so those who despised Him. Sadly Saul didn’t experience it.

Conclusion:

Even though perhaps only Samuel saw God’s heart, God still had mercy and let the Israelites have what they wanted.

This event is also a constant reminder to us that as chosen leaders, we are to do what we can do in our positions, always bringing people to God, and working for God while the

1 Samuel 9 Saul who was blessed due to the donkey
GK611 Morning Devotion
18/7/2023
The Morning Devotion Speaker: Brother Bezalel Tan

Introduction: It is a blessing in disguise though the man lost his mare!

1. Election from the perspective of destiny (9:1-17)

(1) Family background comes from God (V1-2)

What kind of identity does Kish have?
Traditional translations describe Kish as a “mighty warrior”, but the New International Version translates it as “a man of position” or “a rich man, a man of wealth”. Look again at the meaning of Saul’s “strong”: “youth” and “young man”. “His body is higher than all the people by one head”: the original text is “from his shoulders upward he was taller than any of the people”. Saul’s family background is described here as extraordinary, and his figure, physique, and appearance are very good. Saul’s appearance and stature were in line with the appearance standards of the kings of his day.

Everything we are born with we are meant to be. No matter good or bad, ugly or beautiful, rich or poor, it is the fate of God, there is no choice. But how to live in the future life? How to change? It depends on everyone’s choice.

(2) With God’s involvement, bad becomes good (V3-17)

From the above scriptures, we can see that the opportunities in life are in God. Saul just did one thing to honour his father, and wanted to get back his father’s donkeys, but he didn’t expect so many things to happen: he met Samuel. Before meeting Samuel, he met several helpful girls who showed Saul the way.

We often feel that life is in our own hands (hence the idiom that man can determine their own destiny). However, we need to leave room for God to do things, and don’t always want everything to happen according to our own thoughts and plans.

If our outlook on life is enclosed, we do what needs to be done. However, the scriptures tell us that life is an open situation, everything is in the hands of God, and God will lead us into our destiny, so don’t be depressed about the things in front of us, God always knows how things will happen. This is a godly outlook on life. We put ourselves in God’s hands, enter God’s time, and step into the opportunities God has prepared for us.

When you encounter problems, you must learn to come before God first, and find God before man.
When others give opinions, don’t reject them immediately, but humbly examine them, because we can’t be sure whether these Words have God’s will.

2. From obedience to blessing (9:18-27)

(1) Be guided through believe in seeking (V18-20)

The meaning of God taking Saul to Samuel is very obvious. “God is in control”.
No one arranged for Samuel and Saul to meet. God controlled Saul’s movements and directly revealed to Samuel that Saul was the one He had chosen to be king. So, when the two met, Samuel already knew Saul and knew how to make Saul king. But in the events of this chapter, Saul remains ignorant of God’s plan: Samuel only gradually lets him know that God has a special plan for him.

Do you believe that God made a way for you in the desert?
You believe that your whole life is in the hands of God, as long as you believe in Him and seek His indication, you will be blessed.

Verse 20 states that before God uses man, he will definitely solve man’s difficulties, so that man can follow God without any worries, but he must first believe that God can do it.

(2.) Glory through humbleness and obedience (V21-27)

(V21) Saul’s answer was very humble, because he knew his identity. Benjamin is the youngest son of Jacob. The tribe of Benjamin was almost wiped out due to civil war, and the population was sparse. So, Saul claimed to be “the smallest of the tribes of Israel”. Saul’s hometown was Gibeah. The people of Gibeah had done evil and caused civil wars, so they had a bad reputation, so Saul called himself “the smallest of the tribes of Israel”.

The sacrificial meat of the peace offering was originally given to priests (Leviticus 7:32-33). Samuel gave the sacrificial meat to Saul as a sign of respect and that he was about to become God’s anointed one.
The buildings in ancient Israel had flat roofs, which could be used to entertain guests and sleep, so Samuel let Saul live on the roof. And “Samuel spoke with Saul on the top of the house” may be to make the people in the city see it, so as to raise Saul in front of everyone.

The descendants of Adam “that in me nothing good dwells;”, and Saul’s humbleness is because there is no opportunity for pride.
As long as people still live in the flesh, once they have identity, status, and achievements, they may change. Humbleness will become pride, and gentleness will become hardness. Therefore, we need to always accept the illumination of the cross and reflect on ourselves in time.
At the same time, obey those in power, respect them, and care for them. Because they need our response for their efforts.

Conclusion:

Saul went out in search of his father’s lost donkey and unintentionally found the throne.
Samuel was looking for a suitable king for his people but found a completely apolitical and “despised” Gibeathite.

Behind all this is God’s arrangement, for “the things which are despised God has chosen, and the things which are not, to bring to nothing the things that are, that no flesh should glory in His presence.” (1 Corinthians 1:28-29).

Proverbs 23

1 When you sit down to eat with a ruler, Consider carefully what is before you;

2 And put a knife to your throat If you are a man given to appetite.

3 Do not desire his delicacies, For they are deceptive food.

4 Do not overwork to be rich; Because of your own understanding, cease

5 Will you set your eyes on that which is not? For riches certainly make themselves wings; They fly away like an eagle toward heaven.

6 Do not eat the bread of a miser, Nor desire his delicacies;

7 For as he thinks in his heart, so is he. “Eat and drink!” he says to you, But his heart is not with you.

8 The morsel you have eaten, you will vomit up, And waste your pleasant words.

9 Do not speak in the hearing of a fool, For he will despise the wisdom of your words.

10 Do not remove the ancient landmark, Nor enter the fields of the fatherless;

11 For their Redeemer is mighty; He will plead their cause against you.

12 Apply your heart to instruction, And your ears to words of knowledge.

13 Do not withhold correction from a child, For if you beat him with a rod, he will not die.

14 You shall beat him with a rod, And deliver his soul from hell.

15 My son, if your heart is wise, My heart will rejoice–indeed, I myself;

16 Yes, my inmost being will rejoice When your lips speak right things.

17 Do not let your heart envy sinners, But be zealous for the fear of the Lord all the day;

18 For surely there is a hereafter, And your hope will not be cut off.

19 Hear, my son, and be wise; And guide your heart in the way

20 Do not mix with winebibbers, Or with gluttonous eaters of meat;

21 For the drunkard and the glutton will come to poverty, And drowsiness will clothe a man with rags

22 Listen to your father who begot you, And do not despise your mother when she is old.

23 Buy the truth, and do not sell it, Also wisdom and instruction and understanding.

24 The father of the righteous will greatly rejoice, And he who begets a wise child will delight in him.

25 Let your father and your mother be glad, And let her who bore you rejoice.

26 My son, give me your heart, And let your eyes observe my ways.

27 For a harlot is a deep pit, And a seductress is a narrow well.

28 She also lies in wait as for a victim, And increases the unfaithful among men.

29 Who has woe? Who has sorrow? Who has contentions? Who has complaints? Who has wounds without cause? Who has redness of eyes?

30 Those who linger long at the wine, Those who go in search of mixed wine.

31 Do not look on the wine when it is red, When it sparkles in the cup, When it swirls around smoothly;

32 At the last it bites like a serpent, And stings like a viper.

33 Your eyes will see strange things, And your heart will utter perverse things.

34 Yes, you will be like one who lies down in the midst of the sea, Or like one who lies at the top of the mast, saying:

35 “They have struck me, but I was not hurt; They have beaten me, but I did not feel it. When shall I awake, that I may seek another drink?”

Proverb 22

16/07/2023

Proverbs 22

1 A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, Loving favor rather than silver and gold.

2 The rich and the poor have this in common, The Lord is the maker of them all.

3 A prudent man foresees evil and hides himself, But the simple pass on and are punished.

4 By humility and the fear of the Lord Are riches and honor and life.

5 Thorns and snares are in the way of the perverse; He who guards his soul will be far from them.

6 Train up a child in the way he should go, And when he is old he will not depart from it.

7 The rich rules over the poor, And the borrower is servant to the lender.

8 He who sows iniquity will reap sorrow, And the rod of his anger will fail.

9 He who has a generous eye will be blessed, For he gives of his bread to the poor.

10 Cast out the scoffer, and contention will leave; Yes, strife and reproach will cease.

11 He who loves purity of heart And has grace on his lips, The king will be his friend.

12 The eyes of the Lord preserve knowledge, But He overthrows the words of the faithless.

13 The lazy man says, “There is a lion outside! I shall be slain in the streets!”

14 The mouth of an immoral woman is a deep pit; He who is abhorred by the Lord will fall there.

15 Foolishness is bound up in the heart of a child; The rod of correction will drive it far from him.

16 He who oppresses the poor to increase his riches, And he who gives to the rich, will surely come to poverty.

17 Incline your ear and hear the words of the wise, And apply your heart to my knowledge;

18 For it is a pleasant thing if you keep them within you; Let them all be fixed upon your lips,

19 So that your trust may be in the Lord; I have instructed you today, even you.

20 Have I not written to you excellent things Of counsels and knowledge,

21 That I may make you know the certainty of the words of truth, That you may answer words of truth To those who send to you?

22 Do not rob the poor because he is poor, Nor oppress the afflicted at the gate;

23 For the Lord will plead their cause, And plunder the soul of those who plunder them.

24 Make no friendship with an angry man, And with a furious man do not go,

25 Lest you learn his ways And set a snare for your soul.

26 Do not be one of those who shakes hands in a pledge, One of those who is surety for debts;

27 If you have nothing with which to pay, Why should he take away your bed from under you?

28 Do not remove the ancient landmark Which your fathers have set.

29 Do you see a man who excels in his work? He will stand before kings; He will not stand before unknown men.
