Proverb 21

15/07/2023

Proverbs 21

1 The king’s heart is in the hand of the Lord, Like the rivers of water; He turns it wherever He wishes.

2 Every way of a man is right in his own eyes, But the Lord weighs the hearts.

3 To do righteousness and justice Is more acceptable to the Lord than sacrifice.

4 A haughty look, a proud heart, And the plowing of the wicked are sin.

5 The plans of the diligent lead surely to plenty, But those of everyone who is hasty, surely to poverty.

6 Getting treasures by a lying tongue Is the fleeting fantasy of those who seek death.

7 The violence of the wicked will destroy them, Because they refuse to do justice.

8 The way of a guilty man is perverse; But as for the pure, his work is right.

9 Better to dwell in a corner of a housetop, Than in a house shared with a contentious woman.

10 The soul of the wicked desires evil; His neighbor finds no favor in his eyes.

11 When the scoffer is punished, the simple is made wise; But when the wise is instructed, he receives knowledge.

12 The righteous God wisely considers the house of the wicked, Overthrowing the wicked for their wickedness.

13 Whoever shuts his ears to the cry of the poor Will also cry himself and not be heard.

14 A gift in secret pacifies anger, And a bribe behind the back, strong wrath.

15 It is a joy for the just to do justice, But destruction will come to the workers of iniquity.

16 A man who wanders from the way of understanding Will rest in the assembly of the dead.

17 He who loves pleasure will be a poor man; He who loves wine and oil will not be rich.

18 The wicked shall be a ransom for the righteous, And the unfaithful for the upright.

19 Better to dwell in the wilderness, Than with a contentious and angry woman.

20 There is desirable treasure, And oil in the dwelling of the wise, But a foolish man squanders it.

21 He who follows righteousness and mercy Finds life, righteousness and honor.

22 A wise man scales the city of the mighty, And brings down the trusted stronghold.

23 Whoever guards his mouth and tongue Keeps his soul from troubles.

24 A proud and haughty man–“Scoffer” is his name; He acts with arrogant pride.

25 The desire of the lazy man kills him, For his hands refuse to labor.

26 He covets greedily all day long, But the righteous gives and does not spare.

27 The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination; How much more when he brings it with wicked intent!

28 A false witness shall perish, But the man who hears him will speak endlessly.

29 A wicked man hardens his face, But as for the upright, he establishes his way.

30 There is no wisdom or understanding Or counsel against the Lord.

31 The horse is prepared for the day of battle, But deliverance is of the Lord.

1 Samuel 8: “In trouble times, are you willing to let God lead you?”

Introduction: The Beauty of Faith

It reminds me of a game where the groom went to pick up the bride. The groom had to be blindfolded to recognise which pair of hands belongs to the bride. When the groom finds the right one, the bride’s face immediately shows a very happy smile. My thought is that if you recognise it with your eyes open, it may not be as great as blindfolded.

We may not be able to see God today, but God exists. Even if you cannot see the physical of God, do you still believe?
Will you choose to let the invisible God lead you?

1. Trials are unavoidable in life (V1-5)

(1) God’s men do have trials (V1-3)

After a few years of a comfortable life in Israel, Samuel was getting older, so he decided to raise his two sons to serve as judges. It’s a pity that his two sons didn’t love God and walk the way of God like their father. Instead, they took advantage of their position as judges to embezzle, and often took bribes from the people during trials.

(2) There are trials and needs (V4-5)

The behaviour of Samuel’s two sons caused the people to distrust Samuel’s family more and more and even used this as an excuse to change the governance of the entire nation.

2. God always allows people to choose freely (V6-9)

(1) God’s men choose to ask in all things (V6)

Samuel’s displeasure was not due to the distrust of the people, but because the people rejected God’s arrangement. Even so, he did not object right away, but prayed to the Lord first, taking God’s decision as his decision.

(2) The natural man chooses the old self (V7-9)

God let Samuel listen to their decision because they rejected God. On the surface, the Israelites said that Samuel was old, and their two sons were not good, but they did not want God to rule among them through the system of judges. From the time they left Egypt to the present, they have always turned away from God in this way. After all these years, they have always been like this.

3. Pay the price for your choice (V10-18)

When Israel in the past encountered difficulties, their nature seemed to be to forsake God. Even so, God still asked Samuel to warn them that there was a price to be paid for establishing a king. The result of establishing a king is that the king must rule them, people must pay taxes, they must serve the king, and they will be enslaved.

4. God gives in to men’s stubborn willfulness (V19-22)

Although they listened to God’s warning through Samuel, the people still refused to obey and insisted on having a king. Because they saw other countries have kings, hence they think it is better. God did not stop them. He told Samuel twice to “heed their voice”.

Conclusion: The choice is in our hands; the future is in God’s hands

God has always loved Israel, saved them, provided for them, and protected them, but in return, the people still insisted that Samuel make them a king. Although they made an excuse that it was because Samuel’s sons were not good, their real intention was to be like other countries around them, even if they might be ruled by a king who enslaved the people, it didn’t matter.

Are you willing to let God lead your life? Or choose the king of this world? It could be our old self, flesh, or some bad addiction that runs our lives. May the Lord lead our life, and let God control our lives, because we know that God’s leading is the best.

1 Samuel 7 God of Ebenezer
GK611 Morning Devotion
13/7/2023
The Morning Devotion Speaker: Ps Stella Ling

Introduction: God has helped us until now!

1. The Response of the People (v1-6)

(1) The people turn around (v1-2)

It took them 20 years to realise that it was not God who had forsaken them, but that they had forsaken Him through their idolatry, and had painfully eaten their own fruit. So turning around can be in the moment or it can take us a lifetime.

(2) Remove the idols (v3-4)

In the history of the Israelites, we see that the biggest reason they faced captivity was idolatry. Therefore, Samuel told them to get rid of idols and to focus on the Lord and serve Him alone.

We must be alert to the fact that anything that occupies our minds can become an idol in place of the God of grace.

(3) Fasting and Prayer (v5-6)

The Israelites expressed the sorrow of their hearts by fasting and confessing their sins. When God calls us to the knowledge of our sins, we must confess our sins and receive God’s forgiveness and cleansing, so that we may have fellowship with Him without any obstacles.

2. God’s Salvation (v7-14)

(1) God Answers Prayers (v7-9)

When faced with the attacks of their enemies, the Israelites no longer went out on their own to find leaders of military calibre, nor did they resort to any kind of diplomacy, nor did they carry the ark of the Lord back out again, but they asked Samuel to call out for God’s deliverance for them.

(2) God speaks out to defeat the enemy (v10-12)

Scripture only briefly accounts for the fact that it was God who intervened personally. And all the Israelites had to do was to pursue and kill their enemies. As long as people sincerely repent, He will still give people the opportunity to turn around and be willing to accept them and be with them again.

(3) Deliverance from the dominion of the enemy (v13-14)

So that the battle of Eshek would end the years of Philistine dominion over Israel, so that the Philistines would not dare to enter Israel’s territory again for quite some time.

If we turn to God and serve Him, He will give us the power to defeat our enemies and return what has been given to us.

3. Raising up leaders (v15-17)

God raised up Samuel to lead the people, not only to lead the people of Israel against their enemies as the judges had done in the past, so that they could live in peace, but more importantly to use Samuel to teach them His Word, so that they would know how to keep God’s laws and commandments, and follow the Lord with all their heart.

Conclusion:

The Lord is the God of “Enenezer”. In the past, He disciplined the Israelites through the Ark of the Lord captivity, allowing them to spend twenty years in deep reflection, so that they would return to Him again.

Today, we also need to keep healing our old selves and be renewed and shaped by the Word of God. In this way, so that the God of Ebenezer will help us to stand firm in our faith and not be shaken by the perverse thoughts and values of the world today!

1 Samuel 6 Those who offend the God will suffer
GK611 Morning Devotion
12/7/2023
The Morning Devotion Speaker: Rev David Tan

Introduction:

whosoever understands the times is a great man.

1. A complete season of punishment (6:1)

Seven is a complete number and includes a planned complete time frame for God’s punishment of the offender. These offending Gentiles had had enough of being tossed about in sickness and pain before the priests of the false idols of God rose up to speak, but the actions of the false priests were always a bunch of nonsense and not God’s law. So the punishment remains, the discipline remains, the sickness remains, and the people continue to suffer. Life’s problems are no different. If we don’t recognise the problems and get out of the predicament, our whole life may be a life of suffering and cursing.

2. Common sense reasoning of religious leaders (V2-12)

(1)Spiritual problems go to the religious leaders (V2)

The previous chapter talked about sending away the ark of the Lord, and at that time it was the Philistine leaders who were approached. But the scourge kept spreading wherever it went, so what exactly was to be done about it? In the end the idolatrous religious leaders had to be approached. And the priests and diviners of false gods were generally good at ‘showing the way’ and getting people to do what they were told and give what they were told. As a result, they get lost and lost again, and fall deeper and deeper into the trap.

(2) Giving gifts to make amends for sins is common sense (V3)

Giving gifts to make amends for sins is a well-known common human practice; therefore, even before people really know God, they already think that God is just like human beings, and that they can get through the world by giving God sweet treats and saying nice things. Those who think that God is easy to coax really bring shame on themselves and eat their own fruit.

(3) Making the theory of common sense (V4-5)

What kind of disease is there in the body, then will use nuggets of gold to make into a shape? If a rat destroys a field, they make a golden rat as a gift, which is only an idolatrous offering. Not only were they not pleasing to God, but they even greatly humiliated Him and offended Him.

(4) False Priests Offer Random Programme (V6-9)

It is basically impossible for an unyoked and suckling cow to pull a cart. For one thing, the cow was not trained to pull a cart, and for another, the cow would not leave her calf, which was still drinking milk. By this reasoning, the ox-cart would probably only have gone backward, which would have precluded divine providence, and would have been experienced as a chance event. But if the oxen pulling the cart went toward the land of the people of Israel, this would be proof that it was indeed an act of God. One can discover the true God and perceive miracles, but is one willing to surrender to the true God? That is the more important result.

(5) God truly shows that He remembers His people (V10-12)

At the end, we see that the oxen did pull the cart to Beth Shemesh,, where the tribe of Levi lived, which was a miracle! This can only mean that God is truly pleased to return to the dwelling place of the elect. Even though the elect did not take the initiative to come and find the ark of the Lord and ask for it back. It is evident that God loves us on His own initiative, and we should never fail Him.

3. Even the elect have zeal without truth (V13-21)

(1) It is right to rejoice at the sight of the ark of the Lord (V13)

It is right and good for God’s people to rejoice at the sight of the ark of the Lord. God delights in His people rejoicing to meet Him doesn’t He? It is good to have a zeal for God, but never without the truth or straying from the right path.

(2) It was wrong to offer cows as burnt offerings (V14)

According to the rules of offering sacrifices, the Levites should have known better than the general public. Leviticus chapter 1 says that the burnt offering must be a male calf, or a ram. God is a God of rules, and the fact that the Levites in particular, who enforced the law, did not understand this truth, shows how ignorant and wrong Israel was, doesn’t it?

(3) Even the Levites should be damned for their ignorance (V15-21)

The Levites were supposed to be the ones who taught and enforced the law, but it was they who showed their ignorance of the law. As a result, more than 50,000 of them were struck down by God, what a harsh and terrible discipline! How do we interpret this phenomenon? Was God cruel? No! It was man’s disobedience and rebellion. We think that nowadays the new covenant with the grace of Jesus Christ is different, because the Lord of the new covenant no longer condemns. Is that what Jesus said? No! The Lord said that the number of those who walk the narrow path to eternal life and are saved is small; the number of those who walk the highway to perdition is great, and the number of those who will perish in the future will be more than 50,000? Do you think we can not be serious about our faith?

Conclusion: We all need to face God seriously

God’s true, and His words and promises are all true, we need to seriously learn to fear God and honour the truth.

1. Idols fall upon the True God (V1-6)

(1) Thought it was a coincidence on the first fall (V1-3)

After the Philistines captured the Ark of the Covenant, they brought it into the house of Dagon and set it by Dagon to serve their god, and also, they could worship one more god.

God manifested his power and caused Dagon to fall before the ark of the covenant. However, the Philistines thought it was just a coincidence, so they lifted Dagon up and put him back where he was.

(2) The only true God exerts great power again (V4-5)

God once again exerted his mighty power to do amazing work, causing Dagon not only to fall before the ark of God but also to have his head and hands broken off on the threshold. God wanted the Philistines to know that Yahweh is the true God and that their idols are false gods. But the Philistines still didn’t understand. They thought there was a god on the threshold, and they were so frightened that they never dared to step on the threshold of the Dagon Temple.

As long as we live in the presence of God, the forces of darkness cannot stand at all!

2. God Alone Works Miracles and Shows His Glory (V6-12)

(1) God’s harsh hand work on miracles alone (V6-10)

After God showed the Philistines that He is the only true God, they still did not repent, so God put a harsh hand on the Philistines again, ravaging them and causing them all to have tumours. The Philistines finally admitted: All of this, whether it was Dagon’s fall twice, or the illness they got, were all done by supernatural powers! God alone performed miracles and through the coming of the “Ark of the Covenant”, the entire land of Philistia was subdued!

God is merciful to those who fear Him, but He is tremendous to those who rebel and unbelieve! Whatever attitude people take toward God, they will get relative retribution from God!

(2) Return the Ark to its original place willingly (V11-12)

None of the Philistine cities dared to accept the ark of the Lord. Finally, they decided to send the Ark of the God of Israel back to its original place, so as not to harm the people! God judged the Philistines, causing them to have tumours, and willingly returned the Ark to its original place!

Today’s people in the world are searching for ways to solve the world’s problems, and they don’t know how to trust God. They only know how to think and plan, but they don’t really solve the root of the problem! Christians must know that the only way out is to trust God!

Conclusion:

God could have exerted His might and accomplished anything by himself, but He is willing to use those who have been called by grace to accomplish His glorious work because He wants us to share His glory too!

10/07/2023

Proverbs 20

1 Wine is a mocker, Strong drink is a brawler, And whoever is led astray by it is not wise.

2 The wrath of a king is like the roaring of a lion; Whoever provokes him to anger sins against his own life.

3 It is honorable for a man to stop striving, Since any fool can start a quarrel.

4 The lazy man will not plow because of winter; He will beg during harvest and have nothing.

5 Counsel in the heart of man is like deep water, But a man of understanding will draw it out.

6 Most men will proclaim each his own goodness, But who can find a faithful man?

7 The righteous man walks in his integrity; His children are blessed after him.

8 A king who sits on the throne of judgment Scatters all evil with his eyes.

9 Who can say, “I have made my heart clean, I am pure from my sin”?

10 Diverse weights and diverse measures, They are both alike, an abomination to the Lord.

11 Even a child is known by his deeds, Whether what he does is pure and right.

12 The hearing ear and the seeing eye, The Lord has made them both.

13 Do not love sleep, lest you come to poverty; Open your eyes, and you will be satisfied with bread.

14 “It is good for nothing,” cries the buyer; But when he has gone his way, then he boasts.

15 There is gold and a multitude of rubies, But the lips of knowledge are a precious jewel.

16 Take the garment of one who is surety for a stranger, And hold it as a pledge when it is for a seductress.

17 Bread gained by deceit is sweet to a man, But afterward his mouth will be filled with gravel.

18 Plans are established by counsel; By wise counsel wage war.

19 He who goes about as a talebearer reveals secrets; Therefore do not associate with one who flatters with his lips.

20 Whoever curses his father or his mother, His lamp will be put out in deep darkness.

21 An inheritance gained hastily at the beginning Will not be blessed at the end.

22 Do not say, “I will recompense evil”; Wait for the Lord, and He will save you.

23 Diverse weights are an abomination to the Lord, And dishonest scales are not good.

24 A man’s steps are of the Lord; How then can a man understand his own way?

25 It is a snare for a man to devote rashly something as holy, And afterward to reconsider his vows.

26 A wise king sifts out the wicked, And brings the threshing wheel over them.

27 The spirit of a man is the lamp of the Lord, Searching all the inner depths of his heart.

28 Mercy and truth preserve the king, And by lovingkindness he upholds his throne.

29 The glory of young men is their strength, And the splendor of old men is their gray head.

30 Blows that hurt cleanse away evil, As do stripes the inner depths of the heart.

07/07/2023

引言:

没有情感和情绪的讲话,只是一段声音的资讯消息之报告;

1 Samuel 4 How did the glory leave Israel?
GK611 Morning Devotion
07/07/2023
The Morning Devotion Speaker: Rev. David Tan

Introduction:

Speech without feeling and emotion is just like reporting the news;
When the truth is expressed in the speech, the speech becomes a living message.

1. Taking the initiative to fight with own flesh? (V1-2)

What is the key element for God’s army to fight the enemy? Of course, the reason for fighting is because there are enemies coming to attack, but what is being said here is that Israel went out to fight the Philistines, which means that Israel took the initiative to attack! What’s the problem with this?
Israel is God’s army, so how could they not ask the commander when they went out to fight? If God didn’t tell you to fight, your action would lose God’s help. When God is not with you, how can you defeat the enemy?

Just think about the battles in our lives. How many times have we seriously relied on God to fight?

2. Using God with own wisdom? (4:3-5)

(1) The Elders’ Bad Idea (v3)

The elders refer to the leaders among God’s people. The leaders propose to carry the ark of the covenant of the Lord to the battlefield so that God can rescue us from the enemy. This plan looks perfectly fine at first glance, but it’s a bad idea! Because we already know the result, even the ark of the covenant was taken by the enemy in the end! What is the actual cause? Same problem, self-assertion, just using God instead of seeking Him.

(2) The wicked ones escort God (v4)

The ark of the covenant represents God, the Most High and Holy God. Who is worthy to carry the ark of the covenant of God? Of course, are the people who are holy and set apart, but here they are escorted by two wicked priests who ‘do not know God’ and commit crimes? No wonder God ignored them and left them to reap the fruits of their own suffering. We must carefully reflect on our attitude of serving God, so as not to encounter unnecessary disasters!

(3) Terrifying people with sound (v5)

When the ark of the covenant arrived at the military camp in the field, the people shouted loudly. The momentum was really shocking, and even the ground almost shook. Is that God shaking the ground? Maybe, but the people don’t understand what God is doing. If it was an earthquake, it might be God’s wrath against the Israelites. However, this terrifying sound really scares the enemy, but this terrifying sound is not able to defeat the enemy.

3. How can we fight without asking God? (4:4-11)

(1) The enemy is frightened by the name of God (v6-8)

It turned out that the enemy knew the power of Jehovah God, including the painful lessons that Egypt experienced, and the enemy knew that it was the act of the God of Israel. Fear makes the enemy more cautious, looking for gaps or loopholes in Israel, isn’t it? Based on common sense, if a person underestimates the enemy, he will be easily attacked; if a person knows that the opponent is strong, he will pay more attention to the fight.

(2) The enemy determined to win (v9-11)

The enemy will obviously use psychological tactics to encourage soldiers to be strong and manly, or else they will become slaves to Israel. This really made them fight bravely, and the result was a complete victory, and Israel retreated utterly.

4. Why doesn’t God help me? (4:12-22)

Israel suffered heavy casualties, and the ark was captured by the enemy. When the old priest Eli heard the news, he was so frightened that he fell back, broke his neck and died on the spot. This is really a misfortune, and at this time, when the pregnant daughter-in-law heard the news, she immediately gave birth prematurely and named it “The glory has departed from Israel”; what a tragic and desolate situation. God’s people can’t help asking: ‘Why doesn’t God help us? ’ The answer is simple: ‘Because people with God don’t seek God, don’t rely on God, make decisions on their own, and act in their own flesh, so they reap the fruits of their own suffering and fail completely!

Conclusion: What lessons do we have to learn?

Walk with the God of glory every step of the way with a fearful heart.
Do not make your own decisions without asking God; Prayer for everything is a life lesson, Only by seeking the leading of the Holy Spirit will the path be successful.

Proverb 19

09/07/2023

Proverbs 19

1 Better is the poor who walks in his integrity Than one who is perverse in his lips, and is a fool.

2 Also it is not good for a soul to be without knowledge, And he sins who hastens with his feet.

3 The foolishness of a man twists his way, And his heart frets against the Lord.

4 Wealth makes many friends, But the poor is separated from his friend.

5 A false witness will not go unpunished, And he who speaks lies will not escape.

6 Many entreat the favor of the nobility, And every man is a friend to one who gives gifts.

7 All the brothers of the poor hate him; How much more do his friends go far from him! He may pursue them with words, yet they abandon him.

8 He who gets wisdom loves his own soul; He who keeps understanding will find good.

9 A false witness will not go unpunished, And he who speaks lies shall perish.

10 Luxury is not fitting for a fool, Much less for a servant to rule over princes.

11 The discretion of a man makes him slow to anger, And his glory is to overlook a transgression.

12 The king’s wrath is like the roaring of a lion, But his favor is like dew on the grass.

13 A foolish son is the ruin of his father, And the contentions of a wife are a continual dripping.

14 Houses and riches are an inheritance from fathers, But a prudent wife is from the Lord.

15 Laziness casts one into a deep sleep, And an idle person will suffer hunger.

16 He who keeps the commandment keeps his soul, But he who is careless of his ways will die.

17 He who has pity on the poor lends to the Lord, And He will pay back what he has given.

18 Chasten your son while there is hope, And do not set your heart on his destruction.

19 A man of great wrath will suffer punishment; For if you rescue him, you will have to do it again.

20 Listen to counsel and receive instruction, That you may be wise in your latter days.

21 There are many plans in a man’s heart, Nevertheless the Lord’s counsel–that will stand.

22 What is desired in a man is kindness, And a poor man is better than a liar.

23 The fear of the Lord leads to life, And he who has it will abide in satisfaction; He will not be visited with evil.

24 A lazy man buries his hand in the bowl, And will not so much as bring it to his mouth again.

25 Strike a scoffer, and the simple will become wary; Rebuke one who has understanding, and he will discern knowledge.

26 He who mistreats his father and chases away his mother Is a son who causes shame and brings reproach.

27 Cease listening to instruction, my son, And you will stray from the words of knowledge.

28 A disreputable witness scorns justice, And the mouth of the wicked devours iniquity.

29 Judgments are prepared for scoffers, And beatings for the backs of fools.

Proverbs 18

1 A man who isolates himself seeks his own desire; He rages against all wise judgment.

2 A fool has no delight in understanding, But in expressing his own heart.

3 When the wicked comes, contempt comes also; And with dishonor comes reproach.

4 The words of a man’s mouth are deep waters; The wellspring of wisdom is a flowing brook.

5 It is not good to show partiality to the wicked, Or to overthrow the righteous in judgment.

6 A fool’s lips enter into contention, And his mouth calls for blows.

7 A fool’s mouth is his destruction, And his lips are the snare of his soul.

8 The words of a talebearer are like tasty trifles, And they go down into the inmost body.

9 He who is slothful in his work Is a brother to him who is a great destroyer.

10 The name of the Lord is a strong tower; The righteous run to it and are safe.

11 The rich man’s wealth is his strong city, And like a high wall in his own esteem.

12 Before destruction the heart of a man is haughty, And before honor is humility.

13 He who answers a matter before he hears it, It is folly and shame to him.

14 The spirit of a man will sustain him in sickness, But who can bear a broken spirit?

15 The heart of the prudent acquires knowledge, And the ear of the wise seeks knowledge.

16 A man’s gift makes room for him, And brings him before great men.

17 The first one to plead his cause seems right, Until his neighbor comes and examines him.

18 Casting lots causes contentions to cease, And keeps the mighty apart.

19 A brother offended is harder to win than a strong city, And contentions are like the bars of a castle.

20 A man’s stomach shall be satisfied from the fruit of his mouth, From the produce of his lips he shall be filled.

21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it will eat its fruit.

22 He who finds a wife finds a good thing, And obtains favor from the Lord.

23 The poor man uses entreaties, But the rich answers roughly.

24 A man who has friends must himself be friendly, But there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.

Book of 1st Samuel 3

Introduction: Telegraphic code

1. Failure to listen brings spiritual darkness (v1-3)

(1) People do not listen, less revelation given by God (v1)

God is a God who loves to speak and interact with people. He created all things through His word, and from the Exodus from Egypt, into Canaan, to the apostles of the New Testament, and to the church today, He still uses the Word to lead His people. But in the days of the scribes, because the people would not obey the Word of God, the word of the LORD was scarce and not often implied.

It is sad that there is no word and revelation from God to lead us. Without visions, the people perish. Brothers and sisters, has it been a long time since we have heard God speak into our lives? If so, we need to examine if we often do not take God’s reminders seriously? Do we take God lightly? If so, let us turn back to God and confess our sins and repent.

(2) People do not listen, sleep and faint (v2)

When people turn a deaf ear to the Word of God, they enter into spiritual slumber and their spiritual eyes become dull. Eli should have been serving God in the house of God, but he slept in his own place. He should have informed the people of God’s instructions, but did not open his mouth. He should have disciplined his children, but he indulged them. So we see that his eyes were dazzled (original text: polluted, defiled), and the eyes of his spiritual mind were polluted and defiled, so that he could not see the things of God clearly, (original text: incapable of discerning or acquiring).

We are all chosen by God, a royal priesthood and a holy nation. Wherever God places us, perhaps in our homes, workplaces, schools, communities, etc., let us seek God often and keep our spiritual acumen and alertness. See clearly what God wants to do, reach out to people in real time, and be an outlet for God’s love and Word.

(3) People do not listen and choose another vessel (v3)

Not yet extinguished – The original text is interrupt plus extinguished. The meaning is that the lamp was interfered with while it was being extinguished, so it was still lit.

Eli had not become an outlet for God’s Word, and the light of God had become very dim in Israel’s heart. The lamp that should have been extinguished was disturbed by the intervention of the child Samuel, so that the extinguished lamp remained lit. So that the people might still have a ray of light in the darkness, and might find a way out.

God’s plan for salvation and the expansion of His kingdom will never stop because of man’s disobedience. When man does not listen, God will choose another vessel to accomplish what He wants to accomplish. Ask God to help us, in this dark and disobedient generation, to be the one to intervene so that the lamp that is about to be extinguished will be disturbed and continue to be lit. That the lost souls in darkness may find the light of Jesus Christ.

2. Hearing God’s call and responding (v4-17)

(1) Faithful and Obedient Immediate Response (v4-9)

We see Samuel’s faithfulness and obedience. If it were us, we would be in the middle of the night and love to sleep so much. If we were awakened in our sleep, at most 2 times, we would have left it and fallen back to sleep. But Samuel responded faithfully and immediately. Even though Eli was an undutiful authority, Samuel remained respectful and obedient to him.

(2) Responding to God and faith is tested (v10-14)

After Samuel responded to God’s call, God’s first revelation to Samuel was a great test of faith for him. He had to bring to his spiritual elders the bad news that a family would be destroyed by God’s judgment. It was too difficult for Samuel to deliver such bad news.

The advice is good. I think there are several lessons we can learn here.

First, when preaching God’s Word, we cannot just talk about God’s grace and love and ignore the requirements of God’s righteousness and holiness. Otherwise we are discounting the truth of God. Secondly, we must not be afraid to speak the truth in order to please people. Being in authority, we have the responsibility to supervise and guide those whom God has entrusted to us. Furthermore, when we respond to God’s call, even in the way of serving Him, be prepared in our hearts that we are bound to encounter difficulties and challenges. I am not talking about the kind of suffering after sinning on our own.

So when we suffer, we have to first examine our own lives to see if we have sinned against God. If not, then we need to be brave and rely on God to overcome the challenges! On the contrary, if we have no challenges at all in our ministry path, then maybe we also need to examine our ministry, where we have gone wrong, and why even the evil one does not interested in us?

(3) Hearing but without response (v15-17)

Eli, as a priest of God, should have had a very close relationship with God. But we see that his relationship with God really went very wrong. First of all, after being a priest all his life, he actually waited 3 times before he understood that it was God who was calling Samuel. Furthermore, a normal person would have been upset or jealous when Eli learned that God had called Samuel. “I am a prophet of Israel. God has something to say, why not to me?” But Elijah slept until dawn. It is evident that he did not care about his chosen position by God. Nor did he do his duty to the responsibilities entrusted to him by God. V18 Then Samuel told him everything, and hid nothing from him. And he said, “It is the Lord. Let Him do what seems good to Him.”

So Eli listened, but did not respond. In fact, not responding is also a response. And this kind of response provokes God’s anger even more than a wrong response. Because to hear God’s Words and then not take them seriously or not act on them is a serious attitude of contempt for God.

Therefore, brothers and sisters, we pray every day in the morning and light our lamps before God. God has something to say to us. Ask God to help us, and when we hear God’s call, we should give a response.

3. Responding to the call of God and be elevated (v19-21)

Dan to Beersheba is the most northern city of Israel to the most southern city of Israel, representing all the land of Israel. Samuel was elevated by God because he obeyed God’s call and preached God’s revelation obediently and faithfully. He was not only the last, but also the most important judge in the history of Israel. God caused his influence to spread throughout the nation. God was not only with him, but also honoured him, so that every word he spoke did not go in void. And he also became a great prophet recorded in the Bible, who will live forever!

Conclusion: Here I am!

Do you hear the spiritual codes released by God? If we want to have a good relationship with God, to be vessels of His glory, and to have a keen spirituality, we must always open the eyes of our spiritual hearts, and remain watchful, humble, and obedient to God. When we hear the call of God, let us say immediately, like Samuel, “Here I am!”
