Proverbs 13

1 A wise son heeds his father’s instruction, But a scoffer does not listen to rebuke.

2 A man shall eat well by the fruit of his mouth, But the soul of the unfaithful feeds on violence.

3 He who guards his mouth preserves his life, But he who opens wide his lips shall have destruction.

4 The soul of a lazy man desires, and has nothing; But the soul of the diligent shall be made rich.

5 A righteous man hates lying, But a wicked man is loathsome and comes to shame.

6 Righteousness guards him whose way is blameless, But wickedness overthrows the sinner.

7 There is one who makes himself rich, yet has nothing; And one who makes himself poor, yet has great riches.

8 The ransom of a man’s life is his riches, But the poor does not hear rebuke.

9 The light of the righteous rejoices, But the lamp of the wicked will be put out.

10 By pride comes nothing but strife, But with the well-advised is wisdom.

11 Wealth gained by dishonesty will be diminished, But he who gathers by labor will increase.

12 Hope deferred makes the heart sick, But when the desire comes, it is a tree of life.

13 He who despises the word will be destroyed, But he who fears the commandment will be rewarded.

14 The law of the wise is a fountain of life, To turn one away from the snares of death.

15 Good understanding gains favor, But the way of the unfaithful is hard.

16 Every prudent man acts with knowledge, But a fool lays open his folly.

17 A wicked messenger falls into trouble, But a faithful ambassador brings health.

18 Poverty and shame will come to him who disdains correction, But he who regards a rebuke will be honored.

19 A desire accomplished is sweet to the soul, But it is an abomination to fools to depart from evil.

20 He who walks with wise men will be wise, But the companion of fools will be destroyed.

21 Evil pursues sinners, But to the righteous, good shall be repaid.

22 A good man leaves an inheritance to his children’s children, But the wealth of the sinner is stored up for the righteous.

23 Much food is in the fallow ground of the poor, And for lack of justice there is waste.

24 He who spares his rod hates his son, But he who loves him disciplines him promptly.

25 The righteous eats to the satisfying of his soul, But the stomach of the wicked shall be in want.

Proverbs 12

1 Whoever loves instruction loves knowledge, But he who hates correction is stupid.

2 A good man obtains favor from the Lord, But a man of wicked intentions He will condemn.

3 A man is not established by wickedness, But the root of the righteous cannot be moved.

4 An excellent wife is the crown of her husband, But she who causes shame is like rottenness in his bones.

5 The thoughts of the righteous are right, But the counsels of the wicked are deceitful.

6 The words of the wicked are, “Lie in wait for blood,” But the mouth of the upright will deliver them.

7 The wicked are overthrown and are no more, But the house of the righteous will stand.

8 A man will be commended according to his wisdom, But he who is of a perverse heart will be despised.

9 Better is the one who is slighted but has a servant, Than he who honors himself but lacks bread.

10 A righteous man regards the life of his animal, But the tender mercies of the wicked are cruel.

11 He who tills his land will be satisfied with bread, But he who follows frivolity is devoid of understanding.

12 The wicked covet the catch of evil men, But the root of the righteous yields fruit.

13 The wicked is ensnared by the transgression of his lips, But the righteous will come through trouble.

14 A man will be satisfied with good by the fruit of his mouth, And the recompense of a man’s hands will be rendered to him.

15 The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, But he who heeds counsel is wise.

16 A fool’s wrath is known at once, But a prudent man covers shame.

17 He who speaks truth declares righteousness, But a false witness, deceit.

18 There is one who speaks like the piercings of a sword, But the tongue of the wise promotes health.

19 The truthful lip shall be established forever, But a lying tongue is but for a moment.

20 Deceit is in the heart of those who devise evil, But counselors of peace have joy.

21 No grave trouble will overtake the righteous, But the wicked shall be filled with evil.

22 Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord, But those who deal truthfully are His delight.

23 A prudent man conceals knowledge, But the heart of fools proclaims foolishness.

24 The hand of the diligent will rule, But the lazy man will be put to forced labor.

25 Anxiety in the heart of man causes depression, But a good word makes it glad.

26 The righteous should choose his friends carefully, For the way of the wicked leads them astray.

27 The lazy man does not roast what he took in hunting, But diligence is man’s precious possession.

28 In the way of righteousness is life, And in its pathway there is no death.

Proverbs 11

1 Dishonest scales are an abomination to the Lord, But a just weight is His delight.

2 When pride comes, then comes shame; But with the humble is wisdom.

3 The integrity of the upright will guide them, But the perversity of the unfaithful will destroy them.

4 Riches do not profit in the day of wrath, But righteousness delivers from death.

5 The righteousness of the blameless will direct his way aright, But the wicked will fall by his own wickedness. 6 The righteousness of the upright will deliver them, But the unfaithful will be caught by their lust.

7 When a wicked man dies, his expectation will perish, And the hope of the unjust perishes.

8 The righteous is delivered from trouble, And it comes to the wicked instead.

9 The hypocrite with his mouth destroys his neighbor, But through knowledge the righteous will be delivered.

10 When it goes well with the righteous, the city rejoices; And when the wicked perish, there is jubilation. 11 By the blessing of the upright the city is exalted, But it is overthrown by the mouth of the wicked.

12 He who is devoid of wisdom despises his neighbor, But a man of understanding holds his peace.

13 A talebearer reveals secrets, But he who is of a faithful spirit conceals a matter.

14 Where there is no counsel, the people fall; But in the multitude of counselors there is safety.

15 He who is surety for a stranger will suffer, But one who hates being surety is secure.

16 A gracious woman retains honor, But ruthless men retain riches.

17 The merciful man does good for his own soul, But he who is cruel troubles his own flesh.

18 The wicked man does deceptive work, But he who sows righteousness will have a sure reward.

19 As righteousness leads to life, So he who pursues evil pursues it to his own death.

20 Those who are of a perverse heart are an abomination to the Lord, But the blameless in their ways are His delight.

21 Though they join forces, the wicked will not go unpunished; But the posterity of the righteous will be delivered.

22 As a ring of gold in a swine’s snout, So is a lovely woman who lacks discretion.

23 The desire of the righteous is only good, But the expectation of the wicked is wrath.

24 There is one who scatters, yet increases more; And there is one who withholds more than is right, But it leads to poverty.

25 The generous soul will be made rich, And he who waters will also be watered himself.

26 The people will curse him who withholds grain, But blessing will be on the head of him who sells it.

27 He who earnestly seeks good finds favor, But trouble will come to him who seeks evil.

28 He who trusts in his riches will fall, But the righteous will flourish like foliage.

29 He who troubles his own house will inherit the wind, And the fool will be servant to the wise of heart.

30 The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life, And he who wins souls is wise.

31 If the righteous will be recompensed on the earth, How much more the ungodly and the sinner.

Book of Romans 14

Romans 14: Magnifying the seven ‘do not’ songs of true love
GK611 Morning Devotion
22/6/2023
Speaker: Ps Deborah Tan

Introduction: Magnifying Glass

1. Do not judge people (v1-4)

The Roman church at that time had believers from two different backgrounds. Jewish believers and Gentile believers. Today’s chapter is mainly about getting along with each other. Everyone believed in Jesus, and the problem came when everyone sat down to eat together after the meeting.

Those who believe that all things are permissible to eat look down on those who do not eat, thinking that they are under grace but still in bondage to the law, while those who do not eat, in turn, think that they do not follow the law and are no different from the world. What they eat or do not eat is a very small matter, but when they start to despise and judge, we can imagine that such a problem, if not dealt with, will bring division in the church.

In our daily lives and interactions with members of the Lord, we need to learn to accept one another and not judge unless it is a matter of fundamental truth, which is contrary to the truth. For Jesus can make the weak strong and stand firm.

2. Do not living for oneself (v5-8)

In addition to the issue of food, the church in Rome also had different opinions on the keeping of feasts. Some thought it was more important to keep the Sabbath and the feasts of God. Some, however, believed that it is most important that I serve God by offering myself to Him every day.

Paul said that it is not important to keep or not to keep the feast days, but to do whatever is done for the sake of Jesus. And to do it with a thankful heart to God. In fact, everyone was supposed to perish before he or she believed in the Lord. Therefore the life that was redeemed by the Lord no longer belongs to him or her. Therefore, whether one dies or lives should be for the Lord.

3. Do not be a judge (v9-13)

The apostle Paul goes on to say that Jesus is the Lord of everyone. Therefore, in the end, everyone has to pay his or her dues to Jesus. The weak brother pays his debt to God, not the strong brother; but the strong brother also pays his debt to God. v11 Every knee shall bow to Jesus, not to us. And all mouths shall confess that Jesus is their Master, not we. Therefore, each one will face the judgment of God alone in the future. Therefore, do not be a judge and take Jesus’ seat.

4. Do not stumble over brothers (v13-15)

Our spiritual knowledge can only be used for fellowship in love. It is not to be used as a basis for judging others. It should not be used to condemn others or to stumble over them. The basic meaning of love is not to seek one’s own benefit, but the positive purpose of love is to fulfill others.

5. Do not slander one another (v 16-19)

Christians live in the reality of the kingdom of God, and the kingdom of God is not about food and drink, so there is no need to despise and criticise others for food and drink. The kingdom of God is about righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit. These are the attributes of God. And it is for us to live out in truth. Righteousness is a requirement for one’s life. Living the righteousness and holiness of God. Peace is what you do to others and your attitude. Non-competitive tolerance and forgiveness. To rejoice in the Holy Spirit toward God, even in our ministry.

Seek harmony in the Lord, and do not slander one another. But if someone slanders us, the response of Moses in the book of Numbers when he was slandered by his brother and sister or by Korah and his company can serve as a wonderful example for us who are still walking the path of heaven today!

6. Do not destroy the works of God (v20-21)

As children of God, we know that it is God’s desire for us to build on the works of His kingdom of God. Therefore, we should not only do our best to fulfill God’s commission, but more importantly, in anything, no matter how good the reason is, if it may destroy God’s project, we would rather abandon it.

7. Do not lose faith (v22-23)

We are all justified by faith. Before God, everything should be done by faith, and everything should be done by trusting God. Anything that is not done out of such faith is an offense to God. Do not feel uncomfortable or self-condemned after doing something because of your pride or under pressure. This is better than not doing it at all.

Conclusion:

In church life, do not destroy God’s work, tear down people’s lives, and cause them to stumble and stray from the right path because of personal obsessions, habits, or behaviors. Instead, let us make good use of the magnifying glass in our hands. Let our magnifying glass be the true love of God that lights a fire to illuminate people in the darkness. Live out the unity of accepting one another, building each other up, and loving one another.

Book of Romans 13

Romans 13: The Christian life in the world
GK611 Morning Devotion

Introduction: You have to be neat and tidy at all times!

1. Submission to Authority (V1-5)

(1) What is authority?

The first verse says that ‘he who is above’ has authority over his subordinates. Then it says ‘the authorities’, which means that whether it is the government, an official, a boss, or a parent, it is an authority. For example, the teacher is the authority of the students, and the principal is the authority of all the students and teachers. Soldiers have a chief as their authority. It is the same in politics, in society, and in the church. As soon as you rise up as a cell leader, you have the authority that God has entrusted to you.

Apply the truth: We all need to find out who the authority is in our lives. And even more, we need to be aware if we are in the habit of ‘resisting God’s commands’ without realising it. For the Scripture speaks of this speaking of encountering punishment. How great a loss is that?

(2) Obedience to authority

Obedience is a lesson for all who are under authority. All people have the opportunity to be in authority, and all people must learn the lesson of obedience under authority. Perhaps you say that if you were president or king, you would not need to learn obedience because there would be no one above him. Actually, no! God is above him, and how fragile and unpredictable is the life of man.

Application of truth: Obedience is obviously a lesson that Christians need to learn throughout their lives. Obedience is easy when it is to your liking, but it is difficult when it is embarrassing. In addition, if the instructions given by a superior are sinful and evil, should they be obeyed as well? This was the political context of Paul’s Roman Empire, as Christians were being suppressed and many Jews were even opposed to the Roman government and did not accept their rule. Yet Paul still received the truth of the authority of obedience. For example, if the government wants you to deny that Jesus Christ is Lord, one cannot say, “I submit to the authority and deny the Lord. In such a matter it is obvious that one should ‘obey God rather than men’. (Acts 5:29) We are to be fully obedient as long as we do not violate the truth, which is what Paul calls “for conscience’ sake.”

This is why Paul begins Romans 13 with the necessity of obedience to authority, so that we Christians may obey the government as an example to glorify Christ, and secondly, to obey the shepherds who govern us in the church, for God has given them such authority in the first place, and obedience to them is obedience to God, and obedience to God will certainly be blessed.

2. The obligation to obey (V6-7)

There were two kinds of civic duties at that time. One Paul called them the payment of food, and the other Paul called him the payment of taxes.

The apostle Paul specifically used the example of paying taxes to the government, to explain the reason why believers should obey the laws of the state, as if to imply that the Jews of that time were very reluctant to pay taxes and taxes to the Roman government, and often avoided or resisted them. In this way Paul warned the Christians that since they were servants ordained by God, they should be obedient and willing to pay their taxes.

Application of the truth: This is also true for Christians today, who should not be deficient in the taxes they need to pay in order to obey the state externally. Internally, we must not lose a tenth of what we have in the church, so that we can be thankful on the one hand, and have a guilt-free conscience.

3. To others and to oneself (V8-14)

(1) Do not be indebted to others, but love people (8-10)

Paul speaks about the efficacy of love, which is the only way to complete the law. At the same time, he mentions that there is a ‘debt’ that needs to be paid every day, but at the same time is owed every day, and that is the ‘debt’ of loving one another.

In fact, all people are selfish, knowing only to love themselves and to seek their own good, as everyone does. So they all become small-minded and bitter people. Because they do not love people, they are not loved by them. Even if they receive a little material thing, they are still not satisfied in their hearts, but only love can satisfy their hearts and bring them true happiness and comfort. God is love, and that is why the universe is full.

Application of the truth: The world lacks love, but the believer should not do so, and should consider it a debt to himself that he does not love people enough. For it is too much to be loved by God, and it is also the duty to love people; this is the command of God, and the hope of man for us. A believer who does not have a loving heart loses his Christian character and lacks the life of Christ, and he must not have peace and joy in his heart. For he keeps on owing people there and does not want to pay them back, but the one who loves people is full of life, vitality, and sweetness. Life takes on a new meaning, and the one who gives is truly rich.

(2) Be alert and righteous to yourself and put on Christ (11-14)

“Salvation” means the return of Christ, the redemption of the believer’s body, and the full realisation of salvation. To “awake before it is too late” means to be alert and watchful, no longer insensitive to sin. To “always put on Christ” is like a man putting on clothes, though he is putting on the Lord Jesus Christ, but not the same as they put on clothes. Putting on Christ, on the one hand, speaks of our objective position in Christ, in which we take Him as a robe of righteousness and a covering; on the other hand, it also speaks of our practical light in which we live out Christ, in which we manifest and boast.

Conclusion: Witnessing to the Lord in the world

The world is like a big melting pot, and if you are not careful, you will be dyed in all colours and become unclean. Therefore, Christians should
Therefore, Christians should be extra careful and alert at all times. Because Christians are the manifestation of God’s glory on earth, they must not only live a good spiritual inner life, but also have a good life.
We must not only live a good spiritual life, but also have the testimony of a good life and wait for the Lord’s return.

Romans 12 – A new life of justification by faith
GK611 Morning Devotion
20/6/2023
The Morning Devotion Speakers: Ps. Daniel

Introduction:

From Chapter 12 of Romans, Paul began to teach believers how to respond to God and live out a new life of ” justification by faith”.

1. Offering as a living sacrifice (V1-2)

(1) All to God (V1)

The sacrifices offered at that time were killed, but now what Paul wants the believers to offer is a “living sacrifice”. Because Paul did not want believers to kill themselves to sacrifice to God, but to give their lives and the sovereignty of life to God completely while they are alive. We used to live for ourselves, but now we live by relying on the grace of the Lord, so we should live for God!

(2) Renew your mind (V2)

Paul went on to describe that believers will live a new life after offering themselves to God. The thoughts and values that were not in line with God’s will in the past should be changed. Turn from loving the world to loving God and pursuing the things of God with all your heart and soul. In this way, you will become more and more aware of God’s goodwill and experience God’s wonderful promises.

2. Dedicated service (V3-8)

To start a new life, believers need to establish a good relationship with brothers and sisters in the church and care for and build up each other through the gifts bestowed by God. In this passage, Paul uses the term ‘body’ (V4) as a metaphor for the church. In the body of the church, every believer is a different member, with different gifts, such as prophecy, ministering, and exhortation… You must see yourself in the right way and not overestimate or underestimate yourself. According to the faith given by God, doing the right service obediently, and coordinating the services well will make the church grow healthily.

When Paul talked about these ministries, he repeatedly mentioned “Let us use it” which means to serve with faith and dedication. Just like Paul, although his service was often full of difficulties, he still devoted himself to the post of serving unwaveringly, believing that God’s will would never fail.

3. Live out true love (V9-21)

1. Be sincere in love

2. Be respectful to members

3. Be passionate

4. Be kind to neighbours

5. Be at peace to all

6. Be able to overcome evil with good

Conclusion:

After we are justified by faith, we are separated from the world and transformed by the renewal of our minds. When we rely on the Lord to truly live out true love and overcome evil with good, it is the testimony of our new life of justified by faith.

Proverbs 10

1 The Proverbs of Solomon: A wise son makes a glad father, But a foolish son is the grief of his mother.

2 Treasures of wickedness profit nothing, But righteousness delivers from death.

3 The Lord will not allow the righteous soul to famish, But He casts away the desire of the wicked.

4 He who has a slack hand becomes poor, But the hand of the diligent makes rich.

5 He who gathers in summer is a wise son; He who sleeps in harvest is a son who causes shame.

6 Blessings are on the head of the righteous, But violence covers the mouth of the wicked.

7 The memory of the righteous is blessed, But the name of the wicked will rot.

8 The wise in heart will receive commands, But a prating fool will fall.

9 He who walks with integrity walks securely, But he who perverts his ways will become known.

10 He who winks with the eye causes trouble, But a prating fool will fall.

11 The mouth of the righteous is a well of life, But violence covers the mouth of the wicked.

12 Hatred stirs up strife, But love covers all sins.

13 Wisdom is found on the lips of him who has understanding, But a rod is for the back of him who is devoid of understanding.

14 Wise people store up knowledge, But the mouth of the foolish is near destruction.

15 The rich man’s wealth is his strong city; The destruction of the poor is their poverty.

16 The labor of the righteous leads to life, The wages of the wicked to sin.

17 He who keeps instruction is in the way of life, But he who refuses correction goes astray.

18 Whoever hides hatred has lying lips, And whoever spreads slander is a fool.

19 In the multitude of words sin is not lacking, But he who restrains his lips is wise.

20 The tongue of the righteous is choice silver; The heart of the wicked is worth little.

21 The lips of the righteous feed many, But fools die for lack of wisdom.

22 The blessing of the Lord makes one rich, And He adds no sorrow with it.

23 To do evil is like sport to a fool, But a man of understanding has wisdom.

24 The fear of the wicked will come upon him, And the desire of the righteous will be granted.

25 When the whirlwind passes by, the wicked is no more, But the righteous has an everlasting foundation.

26 As vinegar to the teeth and smoke to the eyes, So is the lazy man to those who send him.

27 The fear of the Lord prolongs days, But the years of the wicked will be shortened.

28 The hope of the righteous will be gladness, But the expectation of the wicked will perish.

29 The way of the Lord is strength for the upright, But destruction will come to the workers of iniquity.

30 The righteous will never be removed, But the wicked will not inhabit the earth.

31 The mouth of the righteous brings forth wisdom, But the perverse tongue will be cut out.

32 The lips of the righteous know what is acceptable, But the mouth of the wicked what is perverse.

Proverbs 9

1 Wisdom has built her house, She has hewn out her seven pillars;

2 She has slaughtered her meat, She has mixed her wine, She has also furnished her table.

3 She has sent out her maidens, She cries out from the highest places of the city,

4 “Whoever is simple, let him turn in here!” As for him who lacks understanding, she says to him,

5 “Come, eat of my bread And drink of the wine I have mixed.

6 Forsake foolishness and live, And go in the way of understanding.

7 “He who corrects a scoffer gets shame for himself, And he who rebukes a wicked man only harms himself.

8 Do not correct a scoffer, lest he hate you; Rebuke a wise man, and he will love you.

9 Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be still wiser; Teach a just man, and he will increase in learning.

10 “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.

11 For by me your days will be multiplied, And years of life will be added to you.

12 If you are wise, you are wise for yourself, And if you scoff, you will bear it alone.”

13 A foolish woman is clamorous; She is simple, and knows nothing.

14 For she sits at the door of her house, On a seat by the highest places of the city,

15 To call to those who pass by, Who go straight on their way:

16 “Whoever is simple, let him turn in here”; And as for him who lacks understanding, she says to him,

17 “Stolen water is sweet, And bread eaten in secret is pleasant.”

18 But he does not know that the dead are there, That her guests are in the depths of hell.

Proverbs 8

1 Does not wisdom cry out, And understanding lift up her voice?

2 She takes her stand on the top of the high hill, Beside the way, where the paths meet.

3 She cries out by the gates, at the entry of the city, At the entrance of the doors:

4 “To you, O men, I call, And my voice is to the sons of men.

5 O you simple ones, understand prudence, And you fools, be of an understanding heart.

6 Listen, for I will speak of excellent things, And from the opening of my lips will come right things;

7 For my mouth will speak truth; Wickedness is an abomination to my lips.

8 All the words of my mouth are with righteousness; Nothing crooked or perverse is in them.

9 They are all plain to him who understands, And right to those who find knowledge.

10 Receive my instruction, and not silver, And knowledge rather than choice gold;

11 For wisdom is better than rubies, And all the things one may desire cannot be compared with her.

12 “I, wisdom, dwell with prudence, And find out knowledge and discretion.

13 The fear of the Lord is to hate evil; Pride and arrogance and the evil way And the perverse mouth I hate.

14 Counsel is mine, and sound wisdom; I am understanding, I have strength.

15 By me kings reign, And rulers decree justice.

16 By me princes rule, and nobles, All the judges of the earth.

17 I love those who love me, And those who seek me diligently will find me.

18 Riches and honor are with me, Enduring riches and righteousness.

19 My fruit is better than gold, yes, than fine gold, And my revenue than choice silver.

20 I traverse the way of righteousness, In the midst of the paths of justice,

21 That I may cause those who love me to inherit wealth, That I may fill their treasuries.

22 “The Lord possessed me at the beginning of His way, Before His works of old.

23 I have been established from everlasting, From the beginning, before there was ever an earth.

24 When there were no depths I was brought forth, When there were no fountains abounding with water.

25 Before the mountains were settled, Before the hills, I was brought forth;

26 While as yet He had not made the earth or the fields, Or the primeval dust of the world.

27 When He prepared the heavens, I was there, When He drew a circle on the face of the deep,

28 When He established the clouds above, When He strengthened the fountains of the deep,

29 When He assigned to the sea its limit, So that the waters would not transgress His command, When He marked out the foundations of the earth,

30 Then I was beside Him as a master craftsman; And I was daily His delight, Rejoicing always before Him,

31 Rejoicing in His inhabited world, And my delight was with the sons of men.

32 “Now therefore, listen to me, my children, For blessed are those who keep my ways.

33 Hear instruction and be wise, And do not disdain it.

34 Blessed is the man who listens to me, Watching daily at my gates, Waiting at the posts of my doors.

35 For whoever finds me finds life, And obtains favor from the Lord;

36 But he who sins against me wrongs his own soul; All those who hate me love death.”

Romans 11: Man must hold on to the grace of God
GK611 Morning Devotion
16/06/2023
Speaker: Rev David Tan

Introduction:

As the saying goes, ‘Humility is a blessing, but complacency is a loss!

1. The grace of election (11:1-10)

Election is of God, who has the absolute sovereignty to choose anyone to be His vessel. It means that there are those who are chosen to be saved and those who are not chosen, and will perish. If this means what it says in a literal sense, then is God not unrighteous? How can God blame a man who is judged because he was not chosen by God? What about the responsibility of man? God’s predestination and election are originally the result of God’s foreknowledge and man’s response to God. The omniscient God knew in advance that someone would resist to the point of death and would not believe, and so God said that he had not chosen that person. Who can receive the grace of God? Obviously those who are willing to humbly receive it.

2. Grace to the Gentiles (V11-22)

(1) To stir up the chosen one (V11-14)

The fault of the Jews means their [unbelief]! Since the elect do not believe, God simply saves the Gentiles who are willing to humble themselves and believe. That would have been too exciting for the elect! For instead of receiving the blessing that was theirs alone, the Gentiles, whom they despised, received it. How could this not cause them to be jealous? The purpose of this jealousy was to stir their hearts to repentance and to see that the blessed Gentiles were in fact believing in the Lord, who was their Messiah.

(2) Be humbled even more by grace (V15-22)

What does it mean to say that ‘God is hard on those who fall’? The stumbling is not because God has not chosen, but because of unbelief. When it is known that God chose Abraham and his descendants, it was all the Hebrews. But he who does not believe becomes unelected. It is said here that God can receive a man to the olive tree of salvation, and that God can likewise cut him off from that tree. It means that man must have self-respect and stand firm, otherwise he will suffer the consequences.

3. The elect are blessed again (11:23-36)

(1) Israel will be saved (V23-28)

One day the whole house of Israel will be saved, which refers to a certain number and not to all the Jews. When will this happen? One of the mid-term indicators is that the number of Gentile converts is full. This means that the opportunity to believe in the Gospel is not for everyone, much less forever. So we must all take the opportunity to convert ourselves and our families.

(2) It is God’s mysterious plan (V29-36)

God is the Lord of all, and He is gracious and merciful. Although all men have been disobedient and disobedient, they have ultimately found mercy from God. His mysteries are so unfathomable that we can only humble ourselves before Him; God is pleased to save the humble, and in fact His heart is full of mercy. We are to look to God’s grace at all times.

Conclusion: Those who have been given grace are to rise up as witnesses

Every one who has received grace must rise as a witness; since the rod of salvation has fallen on us, shall we not pass it on to others?
