Hebrews 6: Strive till the end
GK611 Morning Devotion
05/04/2023
Speaker: Bro Asher Chang + Rev David Tan

Introduction:The race between tortoise and hare

When we were young, the story of the tortoise and the hare racing tells us not to be proud or we lose the race. There are many aspects of this story that we should think about. If the hare had the chance to change its mindset and run the same race again, I believe it would have succeeded.

Losing a race is not a failure, if we stop at failure that is a failure forever. The only way to achieve our goal is to keep trying, stand up from our failures and try our best to get to the final destination.

1. Striving to come into perfection

(1) Strive to grow up V 1 – 3

We should leave the foundation of Christ’s truth V1, ‘leave’ means to move on, not to stagnate, but to grow spiritually into maturity.

The solidity and steadfastness of our faith requires that we continually seek to grow and progress. We must not be content with the faith that we had at the beginning of our conversion, but we must strive to continue to grow in spiritual maturity through equipping, memorising the Word of God and continuing to pray.

(2)Strive to move forward V 4-8

We who have been saved and converted, who have personally experienced the gifts of the Holy Spirit, who have tasted the delights of God’s Word, and who have experienced signs and wonders, should always remember with thanksgiving the faithfulness of God.

The author also constantly reminds and warns of the dangers of falling back in faith, that to turn away from the truth is to crucify Jesus again, as to betray and deny Christ, and that there is no more salvation, but the end is to be burned.

(3) Strive hard and not to be sluggish V 9-12

God is a God of righteousness, and He will remember all that is laid up for Him. It is inevitable that we will encounter times of frustration, disappointment, lukewarmness and powerlessness in our ministry, but God knows all. We are to persevere to the end, aiming for the ultimate prize God has for us, and by faith and patience imitating those who in faith and patience continue to struggle and bear the promises.

2. Strive to hold on to the hope that lies ahead

(1) Perseverance and Patience: The Promise of God V13-15

God’s promises are sure. God had promised Abraham that his descendants would be a multitude of nations, and by faith and patience he continued to trust God and to do His will. In the end, God’s promise was fulfilled in Jesus Christ.

(2) Strive to trust God’s oath V16-18

God does not lie. The “two immutable things” here refer to God’s promises and God’s oaths. One must seek confirmation of an oath by someone greater than oneself, otherwise the oath would be worthless. But God has no one greater than Himself to swear by, so His own Words are sufficient. God swears by Himself, and the oath that refers to God is as certain as His own existence.

Conclusion:
Growing through failure, running without giving up, striving to enter into the presence of God V19-20

We may face many persecutions and challenges in the course of our faith and ministry that chill our hearts, but this is not the end of our journey. Jesus is our refuge, the anchor of our souls, our pioneer, our hope and surety of salvation.

We may be like the hare that once failed through ignorance. But we must not stop here, but rise up and continue to grow, striving to enter into perfection until we enter into the presence of God.

Hebrews 5: Jesus – the source of eternal salvation GK611 Morning Devotion
04/04/2023
Speaker: Ps Daniel + Rev David Tan

Introduction:

This chapter talks about the Lord Jesus as the source of eternal salvation! Only through the Lord Jesus, the eternal high priest, can we enter the eternal kingdom of heaven.

1. The high priest of the world (V1-4)

(1) God selected from the world (V1)
God established the priest and high priest in the days of Moses. God chose Aaron to be the high priest and Aaron’s family to be the priests.

People always look at others according to their own way; the ones chosen by God are those who can respond to God’s call in their hearts!

(2) Handling the things of God for others (V1)
The high priest in the human world handles the things of God for people and saves souls. He represents people before God and brings our needs before God, especially offering gifts and sin offerings for people’s sins; he also represents God before people, bringing God’s grace and will to people, and saving people’s lives.

(3) Be sympathetic to the foolish and lost (V2-3)
A human high priest is not just a man who sacrifices animals. The high priest must be sympathetic to the foolish and the lost, for he knows that he too is beset by weakness. On the Day of Atonement, the high priest must first atone for himself and then offer the sacrifice of atonement out of love for the people.

(4) The high priest does not take the honour for himself (V4)
Aaron did not take it upon himself to be the high priest but was called by God and commanded Moses to appoint him. At that time, Korah and all his followers refused to accept. They wanted to glorify themselves, but they were judged by God.

2. The eternal high priest (V5-10)

(1) Son born of the Heavenly Father (V5)
The high priest in the world has a master-servant relationship with God, and the Lord Jesus has a father-son relationship with God. He is the high priest sent by God, and He did not fight for it by himself.

(2) According to the order of Melchizedek (V6)
Melchizedek has existed since the time of Abraham. He is a traditional priest of Israel. He has no beginning and no end, which means that he was sent by God. The scriptures say that the Lord Jesus will be a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek, which shows that the Lord was also sent by God to be the eternal High Priest.

(3) Complete obedience to the will of the Father (V7-10)
Christ prayed to God with weeping and tears before going to the cross. Although He is the Son of God, He is willing to go to the cross for us. In suffering, he showed obedience to God. He came to be a priest with a perfect life, and Jesus became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey Him!

This was a great reminder to people at that time. Because they originally followed Jesus, but when they were under pressure, they wanted to go back. Today is also a great reminder for us: Jesus is the source of eternal salvation! Only those who obey can gain it!

3. Pursue spiritual maturity (V11-14)

The author here warns those Christians who are“dull in hearing” that it is not only a pity but also a danger spiritually! Because one will misunderstand the teaching of the truth and go their own way! Therefore, I urge these Christians to pursue spiritual maturity, grow from drinking milk to eating solid food, become familiar with and live out the truth, distinguish between good and evil, and not be deceived.

Conclusion:

In this end time, there will be many sufferings. Are we willing to continue to follow God in the midst of suffering? If you continue to stick to your beliefs, it may be even harder, so are you still willing to obey?
Only those who closely follow and obey the Lord can gain the root of eternal salvation in Jesus!

Hebrews 4: Strive to enter into the rest of God
GK611 Morning Devotion
31/03/2023
Speaker: Ps Deborah

Introduction:The middle of a storm

1. Enter into rest by faith (v1-11)

(1). Fearfulness to avoid being overtaken (v1)
The people of Israel had the promise of God to enter into rest, but they failed halfway. They left Egypt and passed through the wilderness with the intention of entering the land God had promised them before they could stop, but instead they stopped in the wilderness. They stopped in the wrong place and were disqualified from entering God’s rest. Today, since we have received the promise to enter God’s rest, we should fear and make every effort to enter God’s rest, so that we will not miss God’s promise.

(2). Reconciling the Word of God with faith in our lives (v2-7)
The people of Israel had the gospel preached to them, just as we do, but it was not profitable for them. For they did not mix it with the Word they had heard by faith. Unless a man has faith, he cannot be pleasing to God. The Word of God is to be mixed with faith and lived out. Otherwise a person may hear the voice of God and have spiritual experiences, but he still cannot live a blessed life, nor can he enter into the rest of God.

(3). Make every effort to enter into the heavenly rest (v8-11)
V9 There remains therefore a rest for the people of God, not the rest of the seventh day, nor the rest of entering the Promised Land, nor the rest of the Sabbath year, but the eternal, heavenly rest through the salvation of Jesus Christ. This rest has been prepared since the creation of the world and was intended by God to be shared with man. Therefore, the author exhorts us to enter into the heavenly rest that God has prepared for us in eternity. A heavenly rest that we can experience and taste through our earthly life during our lifetimes.

2. Enter into rest according to the Word of God (v12-13)

Life on earth has many noises, and many voices of selfishness, blood, and the enemy. The loving God knows that it is really not easy for us to have true rest. Therefore, He gives us His Word. To help us examine our own lives to align with God and find rest. And the Word of God is also the basis of His judgment, so if we live according to the Word of God, we will not be afraid to face the future judgment.

3. Enter into rest by the Son of God (v14-16)

Heavenly rest is only through Jesus Christ. He is the guarantee of our entrance into rest. Jesus rose from the dead and ascended into the high heavens as an exalted High Priest. He is able to sympathize with our weaknesses and is willing to be our helper at all times. If we come to Him and cry out, we will be able to turn from our weaknesses by His grace, fulfill our mission in this life, and enter into the eternal rest with the Lord.

Conclusion: Enter into the presence of the Lord

Jesus said in John 16:33, “These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” The rest of God has been accomplished for us. The only condition is that we receive it by faith. Therefore, we do not have to find ways to lean on ourselves to face the temptations, persecutions and difficulties in our lives. In different circumstances, let us keep exercising to enter into the presence of the Lord and enjoy the rest that comes from Him.

Hebrews 3: The ever- reliable Lord Jesus
GK611 Morning Devotion
30/03/2023
Speaker: IP Moses

Introduction:

Not long ago I heard someone ask: Is God also meaningless? Everything in the world is meaningless because they all change and then eventually, they too pass away; but the Lord Jesus is the God who never changes, so He is not meaningless, and He is always reliable!

1. The Lord is greater than Moses

(1) The Lord is worthy of our attention (1)
The Lord Jesus deserves that we often look at Him and wait quietly for Him, so that the Lord can build our lives while we are waiting for Him!

(2) The Lord completely surpassed Moses
Moses had a very high status, and the status is very superior among the Jews, but Jesus surpassed it. The author wants Jewish Christians to have this recognition.

(a) The Lord and Moses were faithful together (2)
The Lord Jesus and Moses were equally faithful in the house of God.

(b) The Lord is more glorious than Moses (3-4)
Although Moses made great contributions to Israel, he was only a man created by the Lord Jesus, so the Lord Jesus deserves more glory than him.

(c) The Lord is more superior than Moses (5-6a)
Moses was a servant of God, serving faithfully in order to testify to the truth. And Jesus is the only begotten Son of God, and He is the truth itself, so He is more transcendent than Moses.

Summary(6b)
Recognise the identity of the Lord Jesus and continue to walk on the path of believing in the Lord with hope and courage.

2. The Lord is worthy of our trust

1. A hardened heart leads to unbelief (7-15)
For example, how the ancestors of Israel hardened their hearts in the wilderness and did not believe what God said, which caused God to be angry. Today we also need to pay attention to whether we have hardened our hearts because of sin, causing us not to believe what God has said to us. We should recall our initial faith in God and persevere to the end.

2. Unbelief loses rest (16-19)
If we choose not to believe what God has said, just like the Israelites were unable to enter the land of Canaan to gain rest because of their unbelief, we cannot enter the rest that God has promised us today!

Conclusion:

May the Holy Spirit enlighten us and help each of us to see the glorious and transcendent identity of Jesus and know that He is the unchangeable and eternally reliable Lord, so that we can get rid of all hardened hearts and unbelief in our lives, and we can all enter His promised rest!

Hebrews 2: Believe with all your heart and keep your salvation

Introduction: How to preserve a piece of paper so that it will not deteriorate for a long time?

If a piece of paper is not well protected, it may accumulate dust or turn yellow due to humidity.
This piece of paper is like our salvation, and our faith is like a protective cover for this piece of paper. The many trials in our lives today, the values of the world, the frustrations of life can cause us to lose our faith. With the loss of protection, our salvation may also be lost.

1. Do not neglect God’s salvation (V1-4)

(1) Hear the Word more and more (V1)

Salvation is like an anchor in a ship, and we are like the ship. The anchor is what keeps the ship steady in the midst of the storm and the waves so that it will not be swept away.

Our mind and heart must hold on to the truth we hear, otherwise we can easily lose the truth we hear with the influence of the world. If a person does not take care to hold on to the truth, he is like a ship without an anchor, which easily loses God’s salvation with the world.

(2) To listen and obey (V2)
The law of Moses was received from the angels, and it is certain that all who violate it will suffer the retribution due to them. All the blessings and curses spoken of in the law are fulfilled, and men take them seriously.

(3) Believe with all your heart (V3-4)
If we ignore the great salvation of God, we cannot escape from sin. To ignore means not to take it to heart, not to care, not to believe. This great salvation was spoken by the Lord Jesus Christ himself, and its importance will be greater than that preached by the angels, and confirmed by the lives of those who heard it.

“God also bearing witness both with signs and wonders, with various miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit, according to His own will?” (2:4) Therefore, let us be more and more solemn about the word we have heard, lest we be carried away from the truth by the thoughts and doctrines of the day.

2.God’s choice must not be ignored (V5-9)

(1) God cares for us (V5-8)
The scripture quotes from Psalm 8, where the “him” originally refers to every person who has been saved, that is, you and me. The ultimate purpose of God is to restore man to the image of God’s creation. God was mindful of us, and made us a little smaller than the angels for a while, to give us glory and honour as a crown, and to put all things under our feet; and if all things obey us, there is not a single thing left that does not obey us, which was the image of God in the beginning.

(2) God loves us (V9)
Though the time has not yet come for all things to be put under our feet, yet we see all things put under the feet of Jesus. Because of the salvation that God wanted to give to man, Jesus willingly accomplished it, and bore the suffering of death for us, and received the crown of honour and glory!

3. Do not neglect the offering of Jesus (V10-17)

(1) Jesus suffered so that man might be made whole (V10)
Jesus is the creator of all things and the author of all things. He is the marshal of salvation who went through suffering to lead us into perfection. By following Jesus, we have salvation, and by the Holy Spirit we can perform supernatural miracles and bring all things under us again.

(2) Jesus became flesh to bring victory over death (V11-15)
The Scriptures mention that Jesus and we are one, and that Jesus became flesh and became man. Because man is flesh and blood, Jesus also had to become flesh and blood, so that He might be the same as us, so that He might corrupt the power of death through death, and taste death for us.

(3) Jesus became the atoning sacrifice to redeem us (V16-18)
As God saved the children of Abraham, so Jesus will redeem us. Jesus Christ humbled Himself for us and was temporarily small. He became flesh and endured suffering, temptation, and death to be equal with men to save us.

Conclusion:

God so loved the world and gave His only begotten Son for our sins. We must indeed keep our faith. Be careful, do not take it lightly, be more and more solemn about the word you hear, and do not let the world be our casual loss to the great salvation God has given us.

Hebrews 1: Jesus is the Transcendent Saviour
GK611 Morning Devotion

The Morning Devotion Speakers: Ps Daniel

Introduction:

The author of Hebrews is unknown, it was written to the Hebrews, that is, the Jewish Christians who were under the test of faith at that time, urging them to stick to the truth in the face of persecution, and pointing out the will of God for the people in the Old Testament. It has been accomplished in Jesus Christ, to prove that Jesus is the transcendent Saviour from God from God!

1. Jesus surpasses all prophets (V1-3)

(1) The Father speaks through the son in the end times (V1-2)

The original text of ‘speak’ is ‘to talk’. Before Jesus Christ came to earth, God spoke to people through prophets. In the last days, God uses the Words recorded in the Bible by His Son Jesus to give us a complete revelation. Let us rely on His Words to stay vigilant and wait for the return of Christ!

(2) Already appointed Him to inherit all things (V2)
The Lord Jesus is the Son of God, and God has already appointed Him to inherit all things. Therefore, Jesus Christ is not only the Saviour of mankind, the whole world and the universe are under His control! The Lord Jesus is the heir of all things, and we are in the Lord, so we can also be the heir of all things in Him!

(3) His command upholds all things (V3)
The original text for “power” is “word”. Since the Lord Jesus reigns over all things, He “upholding all things by the word of His power.” It means that the world today is able to maintain, and the universe is able to operate, because all things are upheld by the power of His Words! Therefore, everything about us is upheld by God’s Words, and we can also rely on God’s Words to overcome the evil ones.

(4) He washed away the sins of the world (V3)
The Lord Jesus became flesh and came to the world, died on the cross for our sins, washed away the sins of mankind, was resurrected and ascended to heaven, and “sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high” to reign in heaven and earth. Because of the salvation of the Lord Jesus, our sins can be forgiven and our lives renewed.

2. Jesus far exceeds the angels (V4-14)

(1) The Lord Jesus is the Son of God (V5)
Because the Lord Jesus is the Son of God, he is more honourable than the angels in the relationship and higher than the angels in position.

(2) God said that all angels shall worship Him (V6-7)
Psalm 97:7 is quoted here… worship Him, all you gods. Also quote Psalm 104:4 Who makes His angels spirits, His ministers a flame of fire. A servant who is brought out of the house is to serve the master’s son.

(3) His throne is forever and ever (V8-12)
Here it is further pointed out that Christ is sitting on the eternal throne, but the angels will bow down and worship Christ. The Lord has eternal kingship, and His reign is righteous. Creation is like clothes that will wear out gradually, but Christ is the Creator! is eternal!
Therefore, we should all live under the control of Christ, completely entrust ourselves to the eternal Lord, and pursue the things of the world are vain.

(4) Make the enemy a footstool for Jesus (V13-14)
The throne of the Lord is victorious and reigning! But angels have no sovereignty, they are servants to Christ, and angels are also servants to those who are saved by Christ. Because we are children of God’s family, angels are also our servants.

Conclusion:

The Savior Jesus is far more exalted than the angels! Do we place the all-important Saviour at the forefront of our lives?
In fact, God gave the Lord Jesus an honourable position, and God will also give us an honourable position, and promised that we will win together with the Lord and will reign with Him! Only when we faithfully follow the Lord until we meet Him face to face!
