Philemon 1: Accepting One Another in the Love of the Lord Introduction: The Book of Philemon records that Paul pleaded with his master Philemon for the fugitive slave Onesimus, asking Philemon to accept Onesimus. This letter also demonstrates to Christians how to accept each other in the love of Christ. 1. Paul’s humble opening remarks (V1-3) The opening of this epistle of Paul is very special. It does not start with “An Apostle of Christ Jesus” like other prison epistles, but with a humble beginning of “Paul, a prisoner of Christ Jesus”, indicating that he does not start his letter with an Apostolic authority. 2. Praise for Philemon’s love (V4-7) Paul praised Philemon for his great love. Because of the wonderful relationship between Philemon and the saints, he received the disciples with love and gave them the rest and refreshment they needed in him. The local believers also did all kinds of good works for Christ out of love (V6). The good deeds we do should let people know that we are doing them for Christ so that the world can see the glory of God and know God. 3. Pleading for the acceptance of Onesimus (V8-20) (1) Appeal to Philemon in love (V8-11) (2) May Philemon accept it willingly (V12-17) Paul did this for the benefit of Philemon’s spiritual life, for his life to be edified, not just for him to submit to authority. This is where Paul deserves our imitation. 3. If there is a debt, it must be repaid (V18-19) The love of Christ shown by Paul to Onesimus was not just words, but a willingness to pay the price and take responsibility. This also shows Philemon and us as an example of a spiritual father! IV. Full of confidence in Philemon (V20-25) Paul wrote this letter because he had full faith in Philemon. He believed that Philemon would accept his request and do it and that Philemon, who loved the Lord, would obey God and the truth because of his exhortation. When we exhort others, we should also have the attitude of Paul, that is, we should not exalt ourselves and expect others to obey us but hope that others will obey God and God’s truth because of our words. Conclusion: Paul’s spiritual authority is based on the love of Christ, because only by loving and accepting each other in Christ can everyone receive the greatest benefit in the Lord!

Paul’s relationship with Philemon was deep and authoritative. But Paul V9 ‘rather I appeal you in love’, leaving Philemon to decide his request. Paul was interceding for Philemon’s fugitive slave ‘Onesimus’, because he was Paul’s ‘son born when he was locked up, and wanted Philemon to understand that Onesimus believed in the Lord and they are now the Lord’s family. Paul asks Philemon to accept Onesimus for Jesus Christ who “is now profitable to you and me.”
Paul expressed his heart to Philemon, hoping that Philemon could live out the truth, not only forgiving a fugitive slave, but also accepting him as a dear brother, just like accepting Paul, and no longer treating him as a lowly slave. And Paul hoped that this good deed was out of Philemon’s willingness.
While Paul offered to accept Onesimus spiritually to Philemon, he also promised to pay back what Onesimus owed to Philemon.

Jonah 4: The God of ‘grace before Truth’ Introduction: Today we come to the last chapter of the book of Jonah, and let’s focus on how the LORD God shepherded this rebellious prophet Jonah! 1. God who first listened to Jonah’s bitterness (V1-4) When God confronted the unreasonable Jonah, He patiently listened to Jonah’s heart, even including Jonah’s desire to ask for death, yet He did not directly point out Jonah’s faults. Instead, He first asked Jonah a question to inspire Jonah to think about his own life, even though Jonah did not respond. 2. The God who met Jonah’s needs again (V5-6) Jonah went outside the city and pitched his tent, acting as a judge for God with indignation in his heart, and was there to observe what would happen next in the city of Nineveh. However, God did not rebuke him at this time, but arranged a plant to shade Jonah, so that he could have a good rest, and Jonah rejoiced greatly. 3. The God who finally spoke the Truth to Jonah (V7-11) After Jonah had a good rest, God let the plant wither early the next morning, and arranged the east wind and the sun to make Jonah experience hardship. Jonah again asked for death, at which time God also responded to Jonah: ‘You are not the authority of the castor tree, and you are grieved by the withering of the plant. What is more, there are many innocent children in the city of Nineveh; shall I not love them all the more?’ The story stops here, I believe because Jonah was speechless under the wisdom of God’s Words, so it contributed to this ending. Conclusion: Ask the Lord to help us to follow His example, so that we can live a life of ‘grace before Truth’ to people. When the children, groups, and even staff we are shepherding are not yet able to live out the Truth, let us first patiently listen to their hearts and meet their needs, and then give God back the sovereignty to manage them. We believe that when God raises up the environment, and because they are living in hardship because they have left the Truth, and because we already have a good relationship with them, we will be able to bring the Truth into their lives with godly wisdom, so that these lives will eventually turn back in the Truth and come back to God again!

Jonah 3: Seize the Opportunity
GK611 Morning Devotion
02/03/2023
Speaker: Ps Deborah + Rev David Tan
Introduction: Cook another pot of rice
1. Seize the opportunity to respond to God (V1-4)
(1) God gives second chance (V1-3a)
A covenant-keeping and loving God, His calling has no regrets. Although there were other prophets at the time, God still gave Jonah a second chance and used him to complete the redemption plan for Nineveh. No matter whether we did not respond to God’s call because of individual negative thoughts, fear, or other reasons; or made wrong decisions to offend God. Through the reminder of today’s Morning Devotion, are we willing to respond to God and reaching out to grab this second chance God has given?
(2) God uses imperfect vessels (V3b-4)
Jonah’s life was full of weakness, rebellion, disobedience, and without love. But God is still willing to use His imperfect vessel. The same is true of God’s will for us. God not only wants people to see God’s deeds through imperfect vessels, but He cares more about our Being. While we accomplish His work, He moulds and changes us, let us live out the being He created us, and become a person after God’s heart.
2. Opportunity to align life with God (V5-8)
(1) An Attitude of Serious Repentance
The Assyrian Empire in the time of Jonah was famous for its violence in the Middle East. But when Jonah announced that God’s judgment would come and Nineveh would be overthrown, the whole city, from top to bottom, seized the opportunity to repent, and their attitude was humble, serious and thorough. Today is the 12th day of church Daniel’s fasting, confession, repentance, and aligning life with God. Have we seized the opportunity God gave us to respond to Him with a positive and serious attitude?
(2) Leaders take the lead in repentance
When the king of Nineveh heard that God was going to judge, he set an example for the whole nation, and then he launched an action of repentance, which brought about a nationwide revival. Today, as a leader, when those who lead make mistakes, God is pleased with the leader who takes the lead to repent first.
3. Opportunity to receive grace and mercy (V9-10)
(1) A heart of longing and anticipation (V9)
Although the king of Nineveh knew that God had no obligation to forgive sins, he still longed for and expected that when the people of Nineveh treated others with kindness and forsake their past evil deeds, God would turn His mind to show mercy to them so that they would not perish from sin. It is very important to desire and believe to see God’s actions, because this is the key to unlocking miracles.
(2) Have actions of salvation
In addition to real repentance with action which is possible to change the outcome it should be. Brothers and sisters, we all know the truth that it isn’t you are once saved, you will always be saved. Children of God should not just confess Jesus as Lord with their mouths, but also live out the behaviours that are commensurate with salvation, so that our lives can exude the fragrance of Christ to glorify God.
(3) God who loves life
The God in Jonah’s mind is a God who can only love Israel, and cannot love other nations, let alone Israel’s enemies. We often think that those who sin must be punished by God to be considered righteous, hence, we block the opportunity for others to repent. The experience of the Nineveh people once again allows us to understand fully that He is a God full of grace, a God who delights people to turn away from their evil ways and survive, and a God who loves life.
Conclusion:
God loves the world, and He is willing to give people all kinds of opportunities to be saved, repent, align their lives with Him, and serve Him all the time. On the road of sanctification, no matter which stages we are at today, let us respond to God with a correct attitude, seize every opportunity He gives, so that we will not lose God’s blessings, and continue to seize opportunities for many to be blessed by God.

Jonah 2: Turning to God in Rest
GK611 Morning Devotion
01/03/2023
Speaker: Asher Chang + Rev David Tan
Introduction: Fish and human being
A fish can be chosen by God. A fish actually has free will, but it does not complain, it does not dislike, it does not say why should I do this with my fish belly? It is evident that we humans are sometimes worse than even a fish. What keeps us from listening? Because of our relationship with God ……
1. Praying to God in Rest(V1)
When Jonah was urged by the master of the ship in the boat, he did not make any prayer, and was determined on his own decision. But when he was thrown into the sea, he only began to pray. When he was in the belly of the fish, just like a dark environment, and could not die or do anything, he began to recite the Word of God, pray to God, and think about the temple of God.
I believe we all began to pray God in rest, recite God’s Words, and think about God’s temple during the pandemic; but as the situation of the epidemic stabilised, did we go back to our old, busier lives, and leave God behind?
2. Asking God in times of trouble(V2-3)
We can imagine a man in the belly of a fish for three days and three nights, eating perhaps some sea creatures swallowed by the fish, without water to drink, in the dark, facing very foul stomach acid, not to mention the passage of time. In the midst of a daze, Jonah chose to hum the Psalms, recalling the goodness of God, and he began to ask God.
Brothers and sisters, the Word of God is important when we are in times of trouble. Jonah not only recited God’s Words in his heart, but in times of trouble he recited them. He experienced God in the depths of the sea, he experienced life in the midst of death, and he saw light in the midst of darkness.
3. Turn back when you struggle(V4-7)
Jonah’s struggle in the midst of the sea: he was overwhelmed by the waters, the seaweed was wrapped around his head, the deep surrounded him (darkness and scarce air), and he even became faint in his heart.
As Jonah struggled in the sea, his first thought was that he was separated from God. Although Jonah had refused to obey in his blood, thinking that he could flee to Tarshish to hide from God, after being thrown into the sea he realised what a terrible experience it was to be expelled from the sight of God. Therefore, he eagerly looked up to God and called on Him in the sea, and would turn to Him, hoping for a restored relationship with Him.
The things of the world can be our struggle. The sea is like our work, and some people are out of breath because of it; the seaweed is like the bondage of some addictions, blocking our freedom to serve God; the pressure is like the deep, causing us to lose sight of hope. We need to turn back!
4. Turning to God when lost(V8-9)
Jonah said in the belly of the fish that he would sacrifice to God with a voice of thanksgiving. He will pay for what he has wished. Salvation comes from the LORD. His desire to give thanks was not because God was going to save him from the belly of the fish. Rather, it is because a man who hid from God, as if he were a sinner expelled by God, turned to God in prayer, and still God answered and listened to him.
When we are lost, we need to turn back. For the Father is at the door waiting for us to come home. This is God’s promise to every prodigal son to turn back.
Conclusion: Experiencing Defeat in Rest(V10)
When we are truly facing many of life’s troubles, difficulties, weariness, struggles, depressions, and even the danger of death, the enemy is trying to get us to mess up and then start doing things in the way that many of us think is God’s way.
But if we wait on God, we can meet God in rest and get the best way. Moses often prayed to God and spent time with Him to see His glory; Esther faced the crisis of annihilation, but fasted and prayed to God in silence; Jesus chose to rest and pray in the presence of God when He chose His disciples and faced temptation.
When we are willing to rest in the Lord and turn to God, God will spit us out of the belly of trouble and into dry land. Just as Jonah did.

Jonah 1: God loved the world and called the people
GK611 Morning Devotion
28/02/2023
Speaker: Rev Tan
Introduction: God is the Lord of all the earth!
The books of the Old Testament are generally only about the Israelites, but the Book of Jonah allows us to see the heart of God. It turns out that God also looks at the sinning Gentiles and wants to speak to them.
1. God loves the world and shows His concern (Jonah 1:1-2)
The sinfulness of the world has reached a certain level, so much so that God has to send a special prophet to the elect to pronounce judgment! From this, we can see that God’s heart is concerned not only with his own people but with the whole world. The omniscient God certainly knows that this sinful city will repent, and because of this, hence this sentence shows God’s love for the world.
2. The self-centred human heart does not obey God (Jonah 1:3)
As God’s prophet and spokesperson, Jonah has God’s instructions different from his own thoughts. Not only did Jonah refuse to listen to God, but he also deliberately fled in the opposite direction. Isn’t this selfish and rebellious? Do we reflect on ourselves as well?
3. God raises storms to subdue people (Jonah 1:4-8)
(1) Who can escape from the calling of God (V4)
God has a calling, can man not obey? The whole earth is in the hands of God, and God can push the boat along the water to help people advance, and can stir up wind and waves to hinder their progress. Can you escape God’s calling? I’m afraid your future will be difficult.
(2) During disasters, each seeks their own gods (v5-6)
In the face of disasters, people are helpless, so people will call on what they think of as gods. Jonah, whose soul and body had fallen asleep, was awakened by the captain. Neither did the captain who knew God miss any chance that he might find the source of the problem. Didn’t men find God only when they are in desperate situations?
(3) Man’s actions are originally controlled by God (V7-8)
“Drawing lots” is a kind of belief that there is a God who holds power in all things. Even though these people don’t know Jehovah God yet, their belief really makes them experience God. In the end, they found the key person of the problem and moved in the direction of solving the problem.
4. God will deal with the hardness of man’s heart (Jonah 1:9-12)
(1) Self-confessed to fear Almighty God (V9)
Do people still think they are God-fearing people even in the state of rebelling against God? This is a common problem for people who feel good about themselves. Do you have this phenomenon?
(2) Everyone is taught and afraid (V10-11)
Everyone learned that Jonah was a prophet of God and that it was his disobedience that caused the crisis, so they all sought answers from the prophet of God. If we are God-fearing people, we will be the ones who can guide the direction when we are faced with disasters.
(3) Rather die than surrender and be stubborn (V12)
How stubborn and rebellious this prophet was, wasn’t he? He would rather die than surrender to God! Knowing that being thrown into the sea is a certain death, but he thinks it is just death, and he does not want to go to the city of sinful people to spread the “gospel”. Is this nation’s dignity or personal stubbornness? Really ignorant!
5. Calamity threatens people to pray to the Lord (Jonah 1:13-16)
Even after people know the solution to the problem, they will still try to use their own methods; they will not use “spiritual” methods until they really fail. As a result, the wind and waves calmed down. Then everyone saw God’s deeds, and everyone respected God and offered sacrifices to Jehovah, saying that they all believed in the Lord. What a glorious result, isn’t it?
Conclusion: After Life God Takes Over (V17)
All the people can see is that Jonah has been buried in the sea, and they don’t know that God is in charge of every next step. At this time, the big fish that God will use appears on the scene. This incident tells us to believe that God is in control of all things, even if everyone and ourselves sees that we must die, we must firmly believe in it to the end!

Proverbs 28: The blessings that the righteous will receive
GK611 Morning Devotion
24/2/2023
Speaker: IP Moses + Rev David Tan
Introduction:
Proverbs is always contrasting the blessings of the righteous with the woes of the wicked. Enter Proverbs 28 and let’s get a positive perspective on the blessings the righteous will endure!
1. The blessing that the righteous always stand
(1) To have peace (V1)
The righteous man lives in peace, strong and courageous without fear, because he walks in the right way.
(2) To be perfected (V5,10,21,28)
The righteous man, because he sees the righteousness of God, does not want to lead others to do evil or to show favoritism, so his life passes from salvation to perfection!
(3) To be honoured (V12,23,24)
The righteous man who fears God does not want to live in vanity, but is willing to tell the Truth, will ultimately be honoured.
(4) Receive mercy (V13)
The righteous man in the sight of God is not a man who does not sin, but a man who is willing to confess his faults and repent, and such a man will receive God’s mercy from all men.
(5) Receive salvation (V14,17,18,26)
The righteous man who fears man will be saved by God from all his troubles!
2. The blessing of the righteous to keep the law
(1) Inheritance from generation to generation (v2,7)
If a king can pass on the law of God, the nation will endure; if a child can keep the Word of God, he will be able to pass on the inheritance his parents have reserved for him.
(2) Not to follow the crowd (V4)
He who keeps the Word of God does not follow the crowd and flatter people, but fights for the Truth to the end!
(3) Prayers are heard (V9)
He who keeps God’s Word has great spiritual authority, so he prays according to the heart of God, and ultimately his prayers will be heard by God.
(4) To live a steady and stable life (V19,20,22)
The righteous man understands that he cannot be in a hurry to earn money, but he works and lives in a practical way, so he can live in peace.
(5) Joy in heart without greed (V16,25)
The righteous man has no covetousness in his heart, so he can be content in all that God has given him, and live a life of peace and joy.
Conclusion:
Proverbs 4:18 But the path of the just is like the shining sun, that shines ever brighter unto the perfect day.
The path of the righteous has its challenges, but God will provide him with all he needs to be able to stand. And the life of a righteous man is not only blessed by God for himself, but he will also bring this blessing to the next generation, so that the next generation may also receive all the abundant property that God gives!

Proverbs 27: True Wisdom in Dealing with People
GK611 Morning Devotion
23/2/2023
Speaker: Ps Stella + Rev David Tan
Introduction:
Let us apply the Truth to the things we face in our daily life, so that we can become wise people in the eyes of God.
I. Learn to be Humble (V1-10)
(1) Do not boast (V1-2)
Do not boast about tomorrow, nor boast with your own mouth.
Tomorrow belongs to the future, which we cannot grasp, and it may never come. Moreover, boasting may attract the jealousy and resentment of others. However, we need to know that the Lord will direct our steps. Therefore, we should live each day well and entrust the plan and results of our work to the Lord.
(2) Do not be jealous (V3-4)
Anger can make people irrational, harsh words and deeds can hurt people, and if it is serious, it can also lead to family disharmony, separation of wives and children, separation of relatives and friends, social disturbances, and other problems.
Jealousy, however, is far more destructive. Like “rottenness in the bones” (Prov. 14:30), no one can stand against it. Therefore, we must always look at ourselves, can we not accept others being better than me, and often envy those who are better than us? Ask God to help us and heal us.
(3) Value relationships (V5-10)
A real relationship should not only include loving support, encouragement, and forgiveness, but also involve direct criticism to help the other party correct their mistakes. However, this requires a real relationship before the other party can accept and adjust.
2. Accept correction (V11-22)
(1) Identify safety and danger (V11-12)
A wise man must have spiritual judgment. Don’t be ignorant like fools, who don’t look back and forth, don’t know even if they are in danger, and only be regret when they are hurt. Therefore, we must always have a vigilant heart.
(2) Do not be guarantor (V13)
Let’s not push ourselves, brag about being a guarantor for others, and feel that we can settle things without considering whether we can bear the consequences.
(3) Do the right thing (V14)
Being “loud” is to exaggerate, which makes people feel proud and then stumble. What’s more, blessing a friend loudly in the early morning, this hypocritical and inappropriate blessing has turned into a curse. Therefore, don’t do what you think is right when the time is not right.
(4) Stay away from disputants (V15-16)
A quarreling woman is like a dripping roof on a rainy day, turning the place where people rely for shelter, warmth, and rest into a place of disappointment and annoyance, and it will also force people to escape or leave. Therefore, if we join with quarrelsome people and try to outsmart the quarrelsome ones, we may end up with nothing.
(5) Not afraid to be sharpen (V17)
Iron sharpens iron in order to wear away ungodly ego, build up a spiritual character, and let the new man inside grow into the stature of Christ, so that brothers can live together in harmony and become one in Christ. Therefore, don’t be afraid of grinding, don’t turn away the relationship because you have been hurt, stick to it, and the edge will be sharpened eventually, and our character will become more mature.
(6) Receive honour (V18)
We are to obey and honour our Master. Then we “will eat its fruit,” and good things will come to us.
(7) Know Ourselves (V19)
Water can reflect one’s face, and one’s heart can also reflect one’s true self. We can also reflect on ourselves from the evaluation of us by those around us. Of course, there will be good and bad reviews. However, when we treat these evaluations with a positive attitude, it will benefit us.
(8) Mindful of our sight (V20)
We must be careful with our eyes, not to pursue things that cannot satisfy us, and avoid those who like to pursue “the lust of the eyes”. While the “lust of the eyes” and the “lust of the flesh” will give us some satisfaction, it is short-term. Only Jesus can truly satisfy us. Therefore, we must learn the secret of contentment in all things.
(9) Mindful of trials (V21)
We should use praise as a “refining pot” and “furnace” to assess our spiritual condition and examine our thoughts.
(10) Stay away from ignorance (V22)
In fact, if a fool accepts discipline, he will be delivered from foolishness. However, it is extremely difficult to convince a fool that he is foolish. Therefore, true wisdom is to keep away from fools.
3. Manage with Loyalty (V23-27)
A wise person who relies on God does not mean doing nothing, but to perform his duty and work diligently. When a person is faithful to his duty, God will also manage that person with Truth and fill his needs with grace.
Conclusion: Fear God, do not boast
Each of us can live a life of humility and loyalty, and we must also be careful to do well what God has entrusted to us. Let us not boast, but value every relationship around us, and understand God’s will. In addition, we also need to know how to distinguish the current situation, don’t show off, be willing to be corrected and adjusted, and be good at coping with different environments.

Psalm 2: Blessed is the man who trusts in God
GK611 Morning Devotion
22/02/2023
Speaker: Asher Chang + Rev David Tan
Introduction:
Psalm 1 refers to “Blessed is the man who Blessed is the man who meditates His law day and night. ” Psalm 2 goes on to refer to the blessed “…… Blessed is everyone who trusts in him. ” This “he” refers to all the kings of the house of David, for God promises that the house of David will never be without a man to sit on David’s throne, meaning that God will always be the support of the house of David.
This is a psalm that describes the enthronement of the kings of the house of David. The leaders of the kingdoms took advantage of the rise of the new king and attempted to unite in rebellion, as if to get rid of God’s rule.
1. The world’s unhelpful rebellion (V1-3)
The Psalmist is describing a time when the kings of the Gentiles were scheming and deliberating to rise up against God and His anointed. Today, there are still many who do not know God who are like these Gentile kings. They desire to seize the authority of Jesus Christ, and in their pride they oppose our God. They do not accept the kings that God has made, but want to make themselves the standard of right and wrong, which is what the kings of the world and prince of the power of the air intended to do.
These kings and Gentiles say that they want to break their bonds and cords, that is, they do not want to be governed by God any more, and for them the Word of God is like a bondage. This is unhelpful, but it is a phenomenon in the world.
2. God’s Chosen King (V4-6)
It is an incredible thing that the created kings of the earth should be at enmity with the great Creator of heaven. So the psalmist describes God as laughing at them from heaven.
The first Psalmist mentions that we are blessed when we love the law of the Lord and meditate about it day and night. Yet human nature does not like this, so it can be tempting to feel misunderstood and bound, and therefore to want to break away from it. When the powers of the world had many plans and schemes, God set His King firmly on Mount Zion.
3. All the nations to the anointed one (V7-9)
Mount Zion will never be shaken, and God has made a holy decree to the Anointed One, saying, “‘You are My Son, today I have begotten You. Ask of Me, and I will give You the nations for Your inheritance, and the ends of the earth for Your possession.” V 6-8 That is to say, all the nations of the world have come under the authority of this Anointed One.
4. Obedience to God’s Chosen King (V10-12)
“Now therefore, be wise, O kings; Be instructed, you judges of the earth!” V10 The original text is “be wise”, which means to be wise, to remind us to be wise and to rise up in obedience to God’s chosen King! The original text for “trust” is “take refuge”, that is, God becomes their refuge. When we are willing to be disciplined and to know ourselves according to the discipline we have received and to stop being self-centred, we are trusting God. We are then blessed, for God will certainly be our fortress and we will become the body of Christ.
Conclusion: Be wise and trust God!
We need to be awaken, walk away from the confusion and bewilderment of the world and rise up to God. When we have a life of obedience, God will hear our prayers because our life is the right life, a life of humility and submission to authority. When we ask, God gives us the nations as an inheritance and our names will be above all.

Psalm 1: A Truly Blessed Man
GK611 Morning Devotion
21/02/2023
Speaker: Ps Daniel + Rev David Tan
Introduction:
Everyone wants to be blessed. What is true blessing? Psalm 1 contrasts the righteous with the wicked and shows us what a truly blessed person is!
1. The way of the righteous to be blessed (V1-3)
(1) Turn away from evil men and things
a. Not walking in the counsel of the ungodly
‘Not walking’ means do not walk in the counsel given to you by the wicked, that is, do not follow the wicked man’s wicked ideas.
b. Not standing in the path of sinners
‘Not standing’ means not to be in the company of sinners, and not to follow what they do.
c. Not sitting in the seat of the scornful
The ‘scornful people’ are those who deny God and repeatedly mock Christians. ‘Do not sit in their seats’ means do not unite with them.
(2) Meditate on the Word of God day and night
The prerequisite for ‘meditating on the Word of God day and night’ is that one only ‘loves’ the law of the LORD. It is only if we love it that we will think about it day and night.
To be blessed we must keep our thoughts within the context of God’s Word. For thought determines behaviour, and how we think is how we act. So, we have to let God’s Word govern our thoughts!
(3) Life is to be rooted in God
V3 He shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water. For our life, it is a life rooted in God, with the Lord Jesus as the living water of life. Such a life will truly receive the Lord’s unfailing provision and bear the fruit of the Spirit in due time; in the face of any drought or severe winter, the leaves will remain green and will not wither, life will overcome any hardship or challenge, and all that we do will be kept by God! All shall prosper.
2. The end of the wicked perishing (V4-6)
(1) Like chaff blown away by the wind
Chaff is the husk of wheat, which means that there is no grain inside but a vain appearance. Those who do not fear God are like ‘chaff’ scattered by the wind, dry and empty because they are cut off from the source of life, and even if they appear to be strong for the time being, they are just like chaff with no eternal value or meaning.
(2) The way of the wicked shall perish
Another thing that happens to the wicked is that they will be judged and condemned. Even if they blend in with the assembly of the righteous, they will not escape judgment and will not stand before the judgment seat of God, but will end up perishing! Only those who are in Christ, by the grace of God, and are willing to repent from their sins, will be saved.
There seem to be many paths in life, but in reality there are only two paths and two final destinations: the ‘way of the righteous’ who receives life by following God, or the ‘way of ungodly’ who perish by rejecting God.
Conclusion:
We will be weak, we will go off course, we will fall down. But because our lives are rooted in God, He will draw us back to long for His word, to meditate about it day and night, and He will keep us and guide us on His blessed path! A truly blessed person is one who is looked after, kept and guided by God!
