31|Psalm 31

02/12/2024

Book of Matthew 4

Matthew Chapter 4: Living out God’s mission
GK611 Morning Devotion
29/11/2024
The Morning Devotion Speaker: Ps Stella

Introduction

We must convey the love of Jesus through actions, live out God’s mission, and become the light and salt of the world.

1. Live a holy life (v1-11)

(1) Overcome the temptation of material things (v2-4)
Satan used Jesus’ hunger as an excuse to try to get Him to turn stones into bread. We will find that the devil’s temptations often come when we are in urgent need or difficulty, telling us to leave God and find another way out. It tempts us to compromise with the world in order to dissolve difficult circumstances (stones) and make our bodies and minds full and comfortable (turn into food).

We see Jesus respond and prevail with the words of the Bible: “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.”

(2) Beat false security (v5-7)

The devil is familiar with the Bible. Since the Lord Jesus gained victory by relying on God’s words, the devil used scriptures to deal with Him, saying “because it is written”. The Lord Jesus did not argue with Satan, but directly declared to the devil, ” You shall not tempt the Lord your God as you tempted Him in Massah” (Deuteronomy 6:16).

(3) Overcome the temptation of vanity (v8-11)

Satan showed Jesus all the kingdoms and splendors of the world and asked Him to fall down and worship Him. In fact, Satan often uses the “glory of the nations” to seduce people’s hearts and lead them to pursue and serve things other than God, thereby resisting and fighting God. However, the Lord Jesus used the authority of the King of Heaven to defeat the King of this world and rebuked him: “Get away, Satan”! Jesus shows us a way of victory over temptation for all who follow Him to follow.
Summary

Modern life is full of temptations to pursue wealth and material comfort. Advertising, social media, and shopping platforms continue to attract us. Christians must learn to discern and know that the real value lies in the inheritance of the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, the primary mission of Christians is to live a holy life by fighting against the sins and temptations of the world. Jesus here provides an example of how we can rely on God’s Word when we face temptation.

2. Preach the gospel of the kingdom of heaven (v12-17)

Jesus returned to Galilee and began to preach and declare, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” This was the beginning of His public ministry, which foreshadowed the church’s mission to live out – to preach the gospel of the kingdom of heaven and call people to return to God.

Therefore, let us regard evangelism as the mission of every Christian and face any environment with courage. In life, we are to seize opportunities to bring the good news of the gospel to those around us.

3. Calling to make disciples (v18-22)

Jesus called Peter, Andrew, James, and John and invited them to become His disciples. This is not only a personal calling, but also building a community. One of the core missions of the church is to call people into faith, to form a spiritual family that cares, grows, and supports each other, and to cultivate believers so that they can become workers who are like fishers of people.

4. Healing and Deliverance Service (v23-25)

Jesus not only preached the truth about the kingdom of heaven, but also healed diseases, cast out demons, and performed miracles throughout Galilee. This allows us to see the Kingdom of God as a place that brings total redemption. Therefore, the mission of the church includes healing and caring so that people can experience God’s love. Because we are to do what Jesus did and bring God’s healing and mercy with us.

Conclusion

Inheritance mission
Power Evangelism
Live the Bible
Towards glory

Matthew Chapter 3: Becoming a Blessed “Child of the heavenly Father”

Introduction: Second-Generation Wealth vs. Child of the Heavenly Father

I. John the Baptist’s Faithfulness: Preparing the Way for the Father’s Plan

1. Proclaiming the Gospel of the Kingdom (vv. 1-3)
John the Baptist understood the Father’s plan—that His Son, Jesus Christ, had come to earth, and the fulfillment of the Kingdom of Heaven was near. In the wilderness of Judea, he boldly declared: “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand!” This message called people to turn their hearts toward God and submit to His will. Quoting Isaiah, John affirmed his mission: “Prepare the way of the Lord,” urging people to repent so that Jesus could reign in their hearts.

Reflection: Today, as “children of the heavenly Father,” we hold the spiritual identity and key to the Kingdom. Will you share it with others? The Kingdom of Heaven is near—what are you waiting for?

2. Humble and Willing Obedience (v. 4)
John, a Nazirite and son of a priest, chose a simple life in the wilderness. Clothed in camel hair and eating locusts and wild honey, he renounced worldly honor to focus solely on fulfilling the Father’s call. His lifestyle demonstrated humility and total obedience to God.

3. Baptizing the Willing (vv. 5-6)
Though John preached a simple message and lived humbly, his faithfulness moved people from all over Judea. This was the result of God preparing their hearts. Through baptism of repentance, John called people to acknowledge their sins and recognize their need for God’s mercy. Baptism symbolized inner renewal, preparing them to receive Christ.

4. Preaching the Truth of God’s Kingdom (vv. 7-10)
Confronting the Pharisees and Sadducees’ false repentance, John fearlessly exposed them as a “brood of vipers.” He emphasized that genuine repentance must bear fruit in action, for “a good tree bears good fruit.” Courageously, John proclaimed the truth of God’s Kingdom, calling people to authentic transformation.

5. Leading Others to Jesus (vv. 11-12)
John humbly redirected all glory to Jesus, acknowledging that his mission was to pave the way for the King of the Kingdom. He declared that Jesus alone was the true Savior of humanity.

II. Jesus Christ’s Humility: The Gates of Heaven Open for You

1. Humbly Receiving Baptism (vv. 13-15)
Though sinless, Jesus willingly submitted to the Father’s plan by being baptized by John. This act demonstrated His complete obedience to God as the Son of Man and set an example for humanity to follow.

2. Receiving the Father’s Delight (vv. 16-17)
After His baptism, heaven opened, and the Father declared, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” This proclamation affirmed Jesus’ divinity and revealed Him as the One fulfilling the Father’s will. His obedience and humility brought the Father great delight.

Conclusion: The Mission of a “Child of the Heavenly Father”

The faithfulness, humility, and obedience exemplified by John the Baptist, as well as Jesus’ humble submission to the Father, reveal the essence of being a “child of the Father.” John’s mission to prepare the way reminds us that transformation begins with repentance and humble submission.

Prepare yourself, follow humbly, and let the Father’s blessings flow freely into your life! Being a “child of the Heavenly Father” is not just a spiritual identity—it is a call to action, bearing the Father’s glory and fulfilling His mission.

Book of Matthew 2

Matthew 2: Do Not Make Ourself King

Introduction: A Nail

I. Making Yourself King

1. Herod the King (v.1–8, 16–18)

a) Fear of being replaced (v.1–4):
Herod the Great knew that the Jewish people were eagerly awaiting the Messiah. When he heard that the Messiah had been born, he felt threatened and became deeply troubled.

In the workplace, do you ever feel uneasy when a colleague excels in their role? In ministry, do you feel threatened when team members show outstanding abilities? When our authority or position is challenged, do we, like Herod, feel unsettled? If God’s plans differ from our expectations, do we struggle with the fear of losing control and decide to take matters into our own hands?

b) Plotting to kill the Lord (v.5–8):
To secure his political power and avoid angering the Jews who longed for the Messiah, Herod, known for his cruelty, devised a cunning plan to eliminate Jesus. He secretly summoned the wise men, instructing them to find Jesus in Bethlehem and report back to him. Although he claimed he wanted to worship Jesus, his true intent was to kill Him.

Do we ever secretly do things to safeguard our positions or rights? Do we deceive or exploit others to achieve our own goals? Or, like Herod, do we misuse the name of God to justify wrongful actions, thereby tarnishing Christ’s reputation and causing others to stumble?

2. The People of Jerusalem (v.3b)

Why were the people, who had been eagerly awaiting the Messiah, also troubled?

a) Fear of disrupted comfort:
The people feared that the Messiah, whom they mistakenly thought would be an earthly king, would clash with Herod and overthrow the Roman government. They worried that the ensuing conflict would disrupt society, endanger their lives, and damage their possessions and status.

Do we hesitate to let Christ reign over certain areas of our lives—such as marriage, family, time, or finances—because we fear losing comfort?

b) Lack of interest in the Spirit’s work:
God did not guide the wise men directly to Bethlehem but instead caused the star to stop over Jerusalem to stir the people. However, from the time the wise men met Herod until Herod’s massacre of children two years later, there is no record of the people seeking or honoring the Messiah.

Are we interested in what the Holy Spirit is doing in our time? Do we remain vigilant and prepared for the Lord’s return?

3. The Chief Priests and Scribes (v.5–6):

The chief priests and scribes had extensive knowledge about the Messiah and taught the people that the Savior would come. Yet, when Jesus was born in Bethlehem, they were indifferent. No wonder the people were also indifferent to His arrival.

As pastors, leaders, cell group leaders, or parents, our lack of spiritual fervor can naturally influence those we lead.

Furthermore, these religious leaders had head knowledge of God but hearts far from Him. Faith that lacks a relationship with God is dead.

II. Letting the Lord Be King

Let’s examine two groups who allowed Jesus to reign in their lives:

1. The Wise Men from East (v.1–2, 9–12):

When the wise men saw the star, they knew the Savior had been born. They travelled a great distance to worship the new born King and continued seeking Him for nearly two years until they found Him.

The wise men’s actions teach us several spiritual lessons:

a) Following the Spirit: They received heavenly revelation and followed the Spirit’s leading.
b) Paying the price: They travelled far and brought costly gifts.
c) Revering God: They came specifically to worship the Lord, offering gold, frankincense, and myrrh, acknowledging Him as King.
d) Correct worship: They worshiped Jesus, not Mary.
e) Obedience: They obeyed God’s instructions and followed His guidance.
f) No turning back: After finding Jesus, they did not return the way they came.

2. Joseph (v.13–15, 19–23):

When God’s angel instructed Joseph in a dream to take Mary and Jesus and flee to Egypt, Joseph obeyed immediately.

a) Immediate obedience to God’s sovereignty (v.13–15):
Joseph obeyed God without hesitation, protecting his family from danger. Moreover, God guided him at every step, showing the blessings of absolute obedience.

We must remain sensitive to God’s leading and respond swiftly in obedience, trusting that He is in control, even when circumstances are unclear.

b) Full submission to God’s plan (v.19–23):
Even though Galilee and Nazareth were despised places, Joseph submitted and made his home there.

Joseph’s obedience reminds us that it’s not about asking God to join our plans but about fully surrendering to His. This is the key to a life of faith and walking with God.

c) Becoming a vessel for prophecy fulfilment (v.15 & 23):
By following God’s instructions, Joseph fulfilled prophecies, playing a role in God’s eternal plan of salvation for humanity.

Conclusion:

Those who seek Jesus with all their heart will surely find Him.
Those who truly believe in Jesus will experience God’s protection and guidance.
In every area of life, let us choose not to make ourselves king but to let Jesus reign fully.

Book of Matthew 1

Matthew Chapter 1: The Lord Immanuel is born
GK611 Morning Devotion
26/11/2024
The Morning Devotion Speaker: Ps Daniel

Introduction:

“The Gospel of Matthew” is one of the four gospels in the New Testament, written by Matthew, a disciple of Jesus. The main readers of this book are Jews. One of the purposes of writing it is to prove to the Jewish nation chosen by God that Jesus Christ is the one promised by God, the Messiah from the house of David! At the same time, this gospel also emphasizes that Jesus is “Immanuel” – the Lord who is with us!

1. Genealogy of Jesus Christ (V1-17)

(1) The Identity and Mission of Jesus (V1)
Matthew begins with a genealogy as an introduction, clearly indicating the identity of Jesus: He is a descendant of Abraham and a descendant of David, fully fulfilling God’s promise that the Messiah will come from the royal family of David (see Samuel 2 7:12-13).

(2) God chooses people out of grace (V2-16)
This genealogy is best known for its record of four women—Tamar, Rahab, Ruth, and Uriah’s wife Bathsheba. In ancient genealogies, women are rarely mentioned, and these four women included in the genealogy of Jesus all had stains and flaws. They were all remarried Gentiles.

Through this genealogy, we see God’s incomparable and abundant grace! No matter what race, gender, or how broken their past lives were, God can choose and call repentant lives to be part of His plan of redemption! At the same time, He also encourages us to spread the gospel to everyone around us with love.

2. The birth of Jesus Christ (V18-25)

(1) It is God’s salvation plan (V18-21)

Mary’s pregnancy was a miraculous act of the Holy Spirit, because the mission of Jesus’ birth was to V21 ‘save the people from their sins’. Just like when our children are caught in a fire, we will naturally rush in to save them without hesitation, even risking our lives; similarly, the Lord Jesus came to the world to personally save us from the fire of sin!

Therefore, when we fall into sin, the first thing to do is confess our sin and recognize our desperate need for redemption!

(2) It is the promise with God’s presence (V22-25)

The birth of Jesus fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah, which is said in Isaiah 7:14: A virgin will conceive and bear a son, and his name will be Immanuel” (which means God is with us). This is God gives the greatest comfort and promise to mankind—He is always with us!

True faith is not just thinking in your head but hearing God’s words and then obeying and acting without fear. In this process, God will surely reveal His will to us through various means. When we truly believe and obey, we can personally experience the guidance of God’s presence!

Conclusion:

The birth of Jesus is not only a Christmas story, but also a true manifestation of God’s great redemption plan, reminding us that God takes the initiative to save us, and He will always be with us. We need to submit to His will and trust His plan!
