42|Psalm 42

25/12/2024

Book of Matthew 16

Matthew Chapter 16: On the Path of Eternity
GK611 Morning Devotion
20/12/2024
The Morning Devotion Speaker: Ps Stella

Introduction: The Price of Choice and the Meaning of Eternity

1. Overcome temptation (V1-4)

Despite their obvious differences, the Pharisees and Sadducees joined forces to test Jesus and demand a sign from heaven. Jesus refused to respond to their request, pointing out their spiritual blind spot: they could tell the weather but not the coming of the Messiah. Jesus mentioned the miracle of Jonah (a type of His death and resurrection), which was the ultimate and most powerful miracle, but hard-hearted people still refused to accept it.

How can we overcome temptation? We are to rely on God’s Word, just like Jesus’ example of using scripture to resist the temptations of the devil in the wilderness. In addition, we must also be wary of spiritual pride and humbly accept God’s leadership.

2. Beware of fallacies (V5-12)

The teachings that Jesus brought out from the Pharisees and Sadducees were like leaven, penetrating and affecting the entire dough, representing the corruption of the human heart by false teachings. The disciples thought Jesus was referring to food, but Jesus reminded them to focus on spiritual truths, not material needs.

Are wrong values eroding our lives today, such as utilitarianism, relativism or materialism? We need to develop spiritual discernment through regular study of God’s Word, prayer, and spiritual disciplines. In addition, we must also practice the truth in our lives and avoid staying at the level of knowledge.

3. Knowing Christ (V13-20)

1) Everyone’s opinion of Jesus (V13-14)

Jesus asked his disciples, who do people say He is? Jesus’ questions lead the disciples to reflect on the focus of their faith. From a social point of view, people have many one-sided understandings of Jesus, such as prophets, religious leaders, etc., but Jesus longed for his disciples to transcend the cognition of the crowd and pursue true understanding.

2) Peter’s confession of Jesus (V15-17)

Peter boldly professed that Jesus was the ‘Christ’ (the Anointed One, the Savior) and the ‘Son of the Living God’. This not only expresses an understanding of Jesus’ identity, but also demonstrates trust in Him. Jesus pointed out that Peter’s confession was due to the revelation of the Father, not the wisdom of flesh and blood.

3) The church has the key to the kingdom of heaven (V18-20)

Building on Peter’s confession, Jesus pointed out that the foundation of the church is the identity of Christ. The keys to the kingdom of heaven symbolize the church’s authority to share the gospel and forgive sins. The church is called to carry out God’s will, impact the world, and lead others to experience life transformation through the gospel.

4. Self-denial and follow (V21-28)

1) Jesus’ self-prophecy (V21-23)

Jesus clearly predicted to his disciples that he would suffer, be killed, and rise again on the third day. However, Peter pulled Jesus to dissuade Him. Jesus severely rebuked Peter: “Get behind me, Satan!” Because Peter did not understand God’s plan but was considerate of human thoughts.

2) Deny oneself and bear the cross (V24-26)

Jesus further taught: “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.”
Denial of self is not simply giving up something external but allowing the thoughts of Christ to replace our own thoughts. Carrying the cross means being willing to obey Christ, even when the process involves pain, sacrifice, and misunderstanding.

3) Eternal values (V26-28)

Jesus reminded his disciples that it would be a great loss for a person to pursue temporary worldly achievements while ignoring eternal significance. Only those who live for Christ can enter into eternal abundance.

Summary: Have the determination to sacrifice oneself

Conclusion: Choose the eternal path

May we all firmly follow Christ and walk on the road to eternity!

Matthew Chapter 15: Moving Faith from Superficial to Genuine
GK611 Morning Devotion
19/12/2024
The Morning Devotion Speaker: Ps Daniel

I. Genuine Worship—Alignment of Heart and Lips (V1–9)

The Pharisees accused Jesus’ disciples of breaking tradition by eating without washing their hands. However, Jesus exposed their hypocrisy, pointing out how they replaced God’s commandments with human traditions. Their worship was superficial, honoring God with their lips while their hearts were far from Him.
Jesus revealed the Pharisees’ and scribes’ flaws to remind us that God values sincere devotion from the heart rather than outward displays to please others.

Superficial piety is like staged actions in a movie—appearing impressive but lacking authenticity. True faith, however, resembles a stunt actor’s effort, built on genuine dedication and hard work.

Let us “wash our hearts” with God’s Word, cleansing our inner selves and transitioning from hollow appearances to genuine worship that aligns our hearts and words.

II. True Defilement—Originating from Within (V10–20)

Jesus taught the crowd that it’s not what enters a person that defiles them but what comes out. He rebuked the Pharisees for focusing on external rituals while neglecting inner holiness, calling them blind guides who mislead others. Later, Jesus explained to His disciples that evil thoughts, deceit, and envy originate from the heart and are the true sources of defilement.
Today, we must avoid being “blind guides” who are superficial in understanding and outwardly devout but fail to examine our inner motives, even misleading others.

True cleansing doesn’t come from disinfectants or rituals but through clearing the “garbage” in our hearts and allowing God to renew our lives. Genuine defilement stems from the evil within our hearts.

III. Genuine Faith—Tested and Proven (V21–28)

When Jesus withdrew to Tyre and Sidon, a Canaanite woman pleaded with Him to heal her demon-possessed daughter. Though Jesus’ response seemed dismissive, the woman persisted, demonstrating unwavering faith. Jesus praised her great faith and healed her daughter.

This passage shows that true faith withstands tests, transcends barriers of race and culture, and even perseveres through the Lord’s “silence.”
Let us emulate this Canaanite woman, holding steadfast in genuine trust, even amid trials and waiting. True faith isn’t proven in favorable circumstances but in adversity.

IV Genuine Seeking— You will find the Lord (V29–39)

After leaving Tyre and Sidon, Jesus went to the Sea of Galilee, where crowds sought His healing. Jesus performed miracles, healing the sick and feeding 4,000 people with seven loaves and a few fish. These miracles demonstrated His compassion and authenticity.

This passage assures us that those who sincerely seek the Lord will never be disappointed. Whether for physical healing, spiritual thirst, or daily needs, when we approach Him with faith and humility, we’ll experience His grace and become witnesses of His miracles.

Conclusion:

Faith isn’t a superficial “cosmetic” but an “inner medicine” that works only when it reaches the heart!

Jesus calls us to move from focusing on external “performances” to cultivating a genuine inner life of faith. Let every word and deed glorify God and benefit others!

Book of Matthew 14

Matthew 14: Trailblazers
GK611 Morning Devotion
18/12/2024
The Morning Devotion Speaker: Rev David Tan

Intro: Trailblazer

I. Paving the Way for the Lord to Heaven (14:1-11)

John the Baptist was the trailblazer for Jesus Christ, preparing the way for the Lord on earth. But more than that, because of his ministry, John became the “forerunner” who left the world and returned to heaven before Jesus went to the cross. Thus, John was not only the trailblazer for Jesus’ appearance on earth but also the forerunner as Jesus completed His earthly mission and returned to the Father!

Just as John the Baptist was Jesus’ trailblazer, Jesus is also our trailblazer. He opened a new and living way for us (Hebrews 10:20: “by a new and living way which He consecrated for us, through the veil, that is, His flesh”). Jesus paved the way to eternal life, leading to everlasting blessings.

Preaching the gospel and bringing people to know the Lord also requires trailblazers—those who prepare the soil of people’s hearts to receive the seeds of the gospel. Once the soil is ready, the gospel will be received, and abundant fruit follows. Are you willing to be a gospel trailblazer?

II. A Willing Sacrifice Opens the Way (14:12-21)

1. Seeking God Alone in the Face of Challenges (v.12-14)

When the trailblazer was beheaded, it seemed like a tragic and terrifying event. Yet, in God’s eyes, it was entirely different. For John the Baptist, it signified the completion of his mission and the time to return home to heavenly joy. However, for Jesus, whose mission was yet unfinished, it was a time of great difficulty. Jesus withdrew to the wilderness, seeking solitude with God. It was a moment of prayer and renewal of strength.
What constitutes successful ministry? What is the prerequisite for powerful service? It begins with personal solitude with God, much like a phone must recharge before fulfilling its purpose.

2. Experiencing God in Greater Challenges (v.15-21)

(1) Face the problem and take it up!
(2) The disciples must take action first!
(3) Entrust everything to Jesus!
(4) There will be leftovers—12 baskets of them

Five loaves and two fish feeding 5,000? It’s an incredible miracle. But how did this miracle happen? The key was that someone was willing to offer their five loaves and two fish. Once this offering was made, the miracle followed. As a result, each of the twelve disciples carried a basket of leftover food. What a marvelous and abundant outcome!

III. Witnessing the Son of God as the Way (14:22-34)

1. Solitary Prayer on the Mountain: The Path to Strength (v.22-23)

After the miracle of feeding 5,000, wasn’t it a time to celebrate such glory? Why did Jesus instead go up the mountain alone to pray? Jesus set an example for effective ministry: praying sacrificially both before and after serving. If the perfect and sinless Lord Jesus devoted Himself to prayer, how much more should we follow His example?

2. Facing Storms: The Path to Victory (v.24-34)

God allows sudden storms in life. When the disciples faced struggles in the boat, Jesus was already walking toward them.
God often reveals Himself in storms. Through these challenges, He teaches His children lessons of faith. In repeated failures and experiences, we learn that with Jesus in the boat, storms will be calmed.
The Son of God is God! He is Lord of all, sovereign over everything. It is often after enduring storms that we truly recognize Him as Lord.

Conclusion: The Experienced Become Trailblazers (14:35-36)

The woman with the issue of bleeding, healed by touching the hem of Jesus’ garment, became the pioneer of the “healing through the hem” ministry. Later, many sick people sought to touch the hem of Jesus’ garment.
Those who experience healing through faith also become witnesses of the gospel’s power. Being a trailblazer means courageously stepping forward in faith, often as the first to do so. Despite challenges and doubts, they forge new paths with faith and courage for others to follow.
