1 Chronicles Chapter 4: God Cares for Those Who Take Refuge Him
GK611 Morning Devotion

The Morning Devotion Speaker: IP Asher Chang

Introduction: Be humble but don’t be inferior

1 Chronicles Chapter 4 records many families and genealogies of the tribe of Judah. Behind these seemingly ordinary records lies a profound belief: no matter how weak you are, as long as you are willing to take refuge in God, God will care for you and protect you.

1. Those who take refuge in God will be protected (V1-23)

(1) God remembers the five sons of Judah (V1-8, 11-23)

The scriptures mention craftsmen, linen workers, and potters. Even though they belong to small genealogies that cannot be traced back, they are included in the genealogy. God did not leave any of his own. Although many family lines and personal names may seem ordinary or even insignificant, in the eyes of God, they are equally important. Their faith and dependence on God enabled them to receive God’s care and blessings.

(2) Jabez’s prayer to take refuge in God (V9-10)

Jabez was the most noble among the brothers. Although his name meant “painful,” he confidently prayed to God for blessings, asking God to expand his territory and protect him from disaster. God answered his prayer, demonstrating His care and protection for those who rely wholeheartedly on Him. God does not value status, wealth, or power, but rather the heart. If you are willing to turn your heart completely to God, He will provide you with the grace, protection and blessing you need.

2. The small tribes on earth, but God still cares about them (V24-43)

The tribe of Simeon was weaker than the tribe of Judah. In the final stages of the wilderness, it was also the tribe of Simeon that had the greatest problem with Shittim’s fornication. Even though Simeon was a declining and unappreciated tribe, they had returned. The scripture mentions that Shimei had many children, which shows that it is not easy to have many children among a weak tribe, but it is pleasing to God. Even though they were few in number, they still worked hard to have children, which shows that having many children was greatly remembered by God.

Although they faced challenges and limited circumstances, they chose to take refuge in God and put themselves and offer themselves to God. The most important thing is that they are willing to take possession of the land and expand the territory. These are all remembered by God.

Conclusion: Are you a person willing to take refuge in God?

No matter how weak or seemingly unimportant we are, as long as we take refuge wholeheartedly in God, He will care for us and bestow abundant blessings and protection. The question is: Are you willing to give your heart to God? If you are willing, God’s grace and care will be with you.

1 Chronicles Chapter 3: Livng Out the God’s Unique Will
GK611 Morning Devotion
13 June 2024
The Morning Devotion Speaker: Ps Deborah Tan

Introduction:

I Chronicles 1-9 are all about genealogy. This chapter is primarily a genealogical account of David and his descendants. This genealogy is recorded from the beginning of David’s reign at Hebron until after the captivity and then the return to rebuild the holy city. The time period is around 400 years. The list of genealogists was actually carefully selected. Its purpose is not to recognise ancestors, but to reveal God’s unique selection of each person and His leadership for each generation.

1. The genealogy of David before the captivity (v1-15)

(1) Sons born in Hebron (v1-4)

v1-4 are the names of David’s children born to his six concubines in Hebron. Even though God’s command in Deuteronomy for the king of Israel not to multiply concubines for himself. David did not comply. Six children out of six different mothers. These children, in the end, also taught David’s house a hard lesson. They also brought great hardship and loss to David and his kingdom in his later years.

When we know God’s will clearly, we should not fool ourselves into thinking that God’s failure to close the door is permission. God has given man commandments and laws, as well as free will. Therefore, we must be obedient and make choices according to God’s revelation. Don’t open the door to discipline yourself.

(2) The sons born in Jerusalem (v5-9)

V5-9 are the descendants of David born in Jerusalem. Although David and Bathsheba had a dishonourable past. God chose Solomon to take over David’s throne and bear the Davidic covenant. The purpose was to bring out the fact that God’s choice was not based on status, ability, or human excellence. God’s election was all based on God’s grace.

Furthermore, in addition to taking over the throne of David, Solomon also inherited the curse of adultery from David. His wives and concubines were in the thousands. The result was the division of the nation of Israel.

The root cause of the family curse has to be dealt with. Otherwise it will be passed on to future generations.

(3) The descendants of Solomon in the southern kingdom of Judah (v10-15)

V10-15 is the genealogy of the descendants of Solomon after the division between the North and the South. Among them are good fathers producing good sons, bad fathers producing bad sons, and good fathers producing bad sons and bad fathers producing good sons.

For the faith to continue to be passed on, both generations must seriously pay the price. The father must seriously pass on the faith, and the child must take up the faith with all his heart and learn to keep the truth with all his might.

2. The Genealogy of returning of the captivity (v16-24)

v16-24 are the accounts of David’s descendants after the captivity. We can find God’s footprints and promises in these genealogical accounts.

(1) God of hope in despair (v16-18)

Because of Jehoiakim’s defiance of God’s Word, God declared, “no one to sit on the throne of David.” (Jer. 36:30). As a result, his son, Jeconiah, succeeded to the throne for 3 months before the kingdom fell and was taken into Babylonian captivity. But 37 years later, Jeconiah was suddenly treated well by the new king of Babylon. Through his experience, God revealed to the captives that He is the God of hope in the midst of despair.

(2) The God who responds to the longings of the heart (v19-22)

Though he grew up in Babylon, Zerubbabel had a heart that was undefiled. When the Spirit of God moved him to lead the people back to the desolate Jerusalem and rebuild the temple, he responded.

In this present generation of darkness, disobedience and desolation, God calls us to lead many, many people to rebuild the temple of their lives. Brothers and sisters. Are you willing to respond to God as Zerubbabel did?

In addition, the names of the other descendants are obscure and ordinary. But the very names of these ordinary people bring out their longing to return to Jerusalem.

Hananiah = God has cared
Shelomith = Peaceful
Ohel = Tent
Berechiah = Blessed by the LORD
Hasadiah = Jehovah God is loving
Pelatiah = Jehovah God saves
Jeshaiah = Jehovah God had saved
Rephaiah = Jehovah God’s pioneer
Obadiah = servant of the Jehovah God
Shechaniah = He who is with the Jehovah Lord
Shemaiah = Heard by the Jehovah Lord

God is willing to answer our hearts’ desire for Him. Some of us, in particular, have names that were given to us by God. Each name has a special will and commission from God. Will you respond to God by living out the meaning of your name?

(3) The God who takes the initiative to fulfill the promises (v23-24)

Elioenai’s son, Akkub, is actually Jesus’ fleshly grandfather, James. It turns out that there are two more generations to go to the centre point of the entire history of salvation.

The fulfillment of the Davidic covenant was entirely promised and accomplished by God Himself. Regardless of the fact that David’s descendants ended up in captivity in Babylon due to corruption, Jesus ended up sitting on David’s eternal throne so that the kingdom and salvation would be fully accomplished in Him.

God has given us many promises today as well. No matter how much we fail, as long as we do not turn away from God, we still have hope. Where we fail is where we experience God’s mercy. God is the God who actively fulfills His promises in our lives.

Conclusion: Living out the Promise

Every person is unique, fearfully and wonderfully made. You and I are unique in God’s history and there is no substitute. So let’s trust that the best of our lives is still ahead of us. Embrace your conditions and limitations, live this one life, live out the promises, live out your calling, and fulfill God’s unique will.

1 Chronicles Chapter 2: God’s Personal Election
GK611 Morning Devotion
12 June 2024
The Morning Devotion Speaker: Ps Stella Ling

Introduction:
“Israel” is the name God gave to Jacob, the ancestor of the twelve tribes of Israel, to represent God’s election. From the scriptures we see God’s and His remembrance, even if he was from a small tribe, a sinner or a Gentile.

1. Unconditional Election (v1-8)
God’s election is unconditional, and therefore faithful and reliable. The fact that even such a broken Judas could become the ancestor of King David and the Messiah shows that God’s plan of salvation does not depend on human light and effort, but is based solely on God’s marvelous grace and omnipotence. However, in the case of the wicked, God will never take guilt for innocence, for God will pursue it.

2. God’s Dominant Election (v9-17)
Simon’s wife was Rahab, a Jericho prostitute who had turned to God. Boaz’s wife was Ruth, a Moabite woman who had turned to God. This shows us God’s delight in the Gentiles who turn to Him. Also, from God’s choosing Judah out of the 12 sons of Israel, all the way down the line, and finally from the seven sons of Jesse, He chose David to be king of the kingdom. And this chain of election was neither based on human achievement nor dependent on human behaviour. It was entirely God’s own leading election.

3. God’s Preparatory Election (v18-20)
Of Caleb’s descendants, Hur and Bezalel are specifically mentioned. Bezalel, the grandson of Hur, was nominated and chosen by the Lord to help Moses build the tabernacle of the Lord. This family was chosen by God to give the Holy Spirit and wisdom to build the tabernacle. We see that God will prepare those whom He will choose.

4. A Challenging Election (v21-24)
The names “land of Gilead” and “Gishonites” bring to mind a series of serious challenges that David’s kingdom had faced. For example, David had fought against the Ammonites, the Arameans and Absalom in the land of Gilead. Absalom, born to David by Maachah, the daughter of the king of Geshur, nearly upended David’s throne, forcing David to flee into hiding in the “land of Gilead”. And Absalom’s daughter, also named Maacah, who was favoured by Rehoboam, led the way in making idols in the southern kingdom of Judah, seriously corrupting the two generations of kings of Judah, Rehoboam and Abijah.

Here we see that God’s chosen people are not immune to storms and challenges, but every challenge is a reminder to rely on God.

5. God’s faithful election (v25-41)
One of the special things about the genealogy of the descendants of Jerahmeel, is that three times it mentions that someone “had no son”. We need to understand that if an Israelite did not have a son, the family disappeared from that point on and would not have had to be mentioned again in the genealogy. Although Sheshan had no sons, only daughters, the descendants of his daughters and the Egyptian servants were counted as his descendants. This shows us that God’s love is revealed, and once again the position of the Gentiles in God’s plan of salvation is revealed. Even the former enemies of God’s people can be changed by God and accepted into His kingdom.

6. God’s election to remember (v42-55)
In this genealogy, many of the names of people are also names of places. Some of the “so-and-so’s ancestors” refer to someone’s ancestors, some of the “so-and-so’s ancestors” refer to the founders of a certain city, and some of both. These records indicate to these returnees, who had been wandering in foreign lands for seventy years, that each one of you has roots, that you are a Judahite, a descendant of Abraham, and that you have been chosen by God and are remembered by Him!

Conclusion:
Through the genealogy of the tribe of Judah, we see that God never regrets His grace in choosing the elect, and we also see that the door of God’s acceptance of the Gentiles is always open. We see not only God’s uncompromising justice, but also His mercy covering transgressions.

May the Lord help us to realise that each one of us was chosen by God Himself. This election is not due to our background or accomplishments, but through God’s mercy and love!

Introduction:

This chapter may seem like just a long genealogy, but behind the names we can see God’s faithfulness!

1. God Will Save His Creation (V1-4)

The book of Chronicles is not just a historical record, it is meant to help the Israelites returning from captivity to remember and rebuild their identity and the foundation of their faith, so that they can be hopeful for the future.

Recalling the genealogy from Adam to Noah was to reveal God as Creator, Redeemer and the fall of man so that the returnees could be cheered up! Knowing that they too are God’s creatures, God has not abandoned them and will continue to save and care for them.

Reviewing Adam’s genealogy also enables us to know that we are God’s beloved creation and that He will be our help at all times. The prerequisite is that we must recognise Him as the Creator of life, the Source of life and the Provider of life.

2. God will fulfill His promises (V5-34)

(1) The survival of a godly lineage (V5-26)

Commemorate the descendants from Noah to Abraham, for they reveal God’s promise to keep the descendants of the godly and righteous. Beginning with Noah’s three sons, mankind was able to populate the earth again.

This genealogy is extremely important for the returnees, for it reminds them that they belong to a godly lineage, and not to retreat in the face of hardship as they rebuild the temple and Jerusalem, for God has proved to preserve the lineage of the godly believers, regardless of the harshness of the circumstances of life.

(2) Follow by faith and turns into a great nation (V27-34)

The descendants from Abraham to Jacob (Israel), who became the twelve tribes of Israel, reminds one that Abraham followed God’s instruction by faith, leaving his native land and tribe, and God fulfilled His promise that Abraham’s descendants would become a great nation, and that through his descendants all nations would be blessed (Genesis 12:1-3)! The promise of the blessing of the nations is ultimately fulfilled through Jesus Christ!

The genealogy in 1 Chronicles shows that God is faithful and He will fulfill His promises. We can learn from this that no matter what we experience, God is faithful and His promises never fail! We can trust Him!

3. Choose wrongly and miss the promises (V35-54)

The Edomites, descendants of Esau, are recorded here. Esau was the older brother of Jacob, and because of rash choices, he betrayed his first-born son’s name for stew of lentils, and brought about long-lasting evils for the sake of short-lived fulfillment. Edom had its own kingdom and system of kings. Though they were descendants of Abraham, they chose a different path. They represent the carnal unbelievers of the world who refuse to follow God and miss out on the inheritance He has promised.

When faithful returnees look back at Esau’s genealogy, they can learn two lessons: First, in spirit, separate yourself from all the evil in the world. Second, to be a good witness to the carnal unbelievers of the world.
We must likewise keep ourselves today, not only from following the sinful ways of the world, but also from being good witnesses to them.

Conclusion: Genealogy Reveals God’s Faithfulness

As we open the first chapter of 1 Chronicles again, let us read it with new perspective. A genealogy is not just a series of names, but a testimony of God’s faithfulness and salvation. Let us draw spiritual lessons from these historical records, trusting in God’s promises, obeying His will, and living a good testimony.

Psalm 29: Glory in God
GK611 Morning Devotion

Introduction: The heart of the game founder

1. Give glory to the Lord (V1-2)

God is the Lord of all things, so when David calls the sons of God, he can refer to all things created by God. In the past, the experience of the Israelites tells us that if we do not give God the glory He deserves, it is easy for people to give glory to themselves, and even mistakenly think that the idols they have created are helping them. Therefore, we must always be grateful, give glory to God, and worship the holy and glorious Jehovah.

2. Listening to God’s voice in the storm (V3-4)

In several verses, David describes the glory of God being revealed even in the midst of a storm. Because the voice of God is powerful and majestic, louder than the thunder and the rain. Whether it is a storm in nature or a storm in our lives, as long as we understand the existence of God, we can listen to the voice of Jehovah in the storm and give Him all the glory.

3. Hear God’s voice during elevation (V5-6)

The Bible says: “The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars, yes, the Lord splinters the cedars of Lebanon.” (Psalm 29:5) The cedar of Lebanon is a tree with deep historical and cultural significance that grows in the mountains of Lebanon, known for its magnificence and durability. The cedar tree is tall and mighty, evergreen and cold-resistant, and its wood is strong. It is a symbol of natural beauty. However, David described that the voice of Jehovah could break the tree, indicating that no matter how tall, beautiful, or spectacular we are, we must be humble before God, otherwise the proud and arrogant people will be humbled.

4. Listening to God’s voice in the wilderness (V7-9)

The divisions flames of fire describe thunder and lightning, and the Wilderness of Kadesh is located to the south of the land of Canaan. The verse mentioned in the scripture “makes the deer give birth” can also be translated as “making the oak tree shake.” God’s voice is everywhere, whether in the wilderness or in the storm. If we still call the Lord our glory, God must speak out here. Let us know the voice of the Lord in good times and ecognize His voice in bad times. Therefore, unbelievers see only the storms, pain, and difficulties in life, but believers see His glory revealed in them.

5. Acknowledging Jehovah as King (V10-11)

God is forever seated on the throne as King, and He remains King even during the floods. The word “flood” specifically refers to the great flood in Noah’s time in the original text, symbolising great turmoil and unrest. No matter how the world changes, God is always in control of nature and history, giving His people strength and peace.

Therefore, no matter how dreadful the circumstances, we can rest assured that it is our heavenly Father who is in control. He will allow us to experience the strength He gives us in the storm, help us cope with stress and difficulties, and ultimately enjoy the peace and blessings God gives us and find rest in Christ.

Conclusion: God is always sitting as King, in control of everything!

Both in times of flood and in the storms of our lives. His voice is full of majesty, shaking heaven and earth, and even the strongest cedar tree seems small before Him. We must always be humble, give glory to God, and trust in His sovereignty in all circumstances.

No matter how turbulent the world is, God always gives us strength and peace, enabling us to experience His love and power in the storm, and ultimately enjoy the rest and blessings He has given us in Christ. Let us be grateful in good times, strengthen our faith in adversity, look upon God’s presence, and witness the manifestation of His glory.
