1 Timothy Chapter 1: Those who receive the gospel
GK611 Morning Devotion
17/05/2024
The Morning Devotion Speaker: Rev David Tan
Introduction: A model of Christian life after God’s heart!
1. Becoming a true spiritual son (V1-4)
Those who are reborn in the gospel should become the true sons of their spiritual elders! The relationship formed by this identity is greater than the role of apostle. This identity requires learning to obey the blessings and instructions of the fathers; the key is to stand firm, stick to the faith, and be able to discern. Timothy became a true son of Paul. On the one hand, he received the blessings from his father, and at the same time, he also obeyed the instructions of his spiritual father, obeying the instructions and glorifying God.
2. Accepting the Lord’s commandments and spreading true love (V5-7)
Why did God give laws and commandments? Isn’t it because of love? Otherwise, God wouldn’t have bothered so much: “If you want to be blessed, believe it; if not, just die!” No, God has good intentions and uses every possible means to make people understand the faith and receive salvation. Only those who truly receive love will continue to preach love and bear witness to what they have experienced at any cost. The love that obeys God’s commands is a kind of complete and simple trust. Since we have received it freely, we should also pass this love freely to others.
3. Relying on the law to reveal sins (V8-10)
People’s hearts always “deviate”! According to human nature, people will always naturally reveal all kinds of sins that deviate from the truth. Therefore, the function of the law is very important, otherwise people will not realise it even if they are crooked, because the crows in the world are all black, and they always feel that everyone is the same. Sinners pervade all mankind, but fortunately, God’s commandments continue to illuminate people, making them realise their sins and repent.
4. Experiencing the gospel and bearing witness (V11-16)
(1) Commissioned to preach the gospel (V11-12)
Almighty God entrusted the most important and sacred work to the apostle Paul. In fact, the same is true for us. Because we have received the gospel, we have also become messengers sent by the Lord! If we are faithful and stand up to serve, we will experience the strength given by the Lord!
(2) Witnessing true transformation (V13-14)
Paul has a 180-degree testimony of life transformation. Although our stories of believing in the Lord are different, the essence of transformation is the same. Therefore, our transformation is a testimony of the gospel.
(3) The chief sinner turns into glory (V15-16)
The chief of sinners becomes the most glorious witness of the gospel and a witness and example to many. [Christ came into the world to save sinners] is the core of faith. This is the testimony we must bear in the world!
5. Fighting the good fight by faith (1:17-20)
As disciples and messengers of the gospel, Paul’s true spiritual sons must fight the good fight for the gospel with complete faith.
We have the most noble and glorious God, who saves all peoples with the gospel; but we also know that there is destruction and obstruction from Satan, so preaching the gospel is a life and death battle. The beauty of this battle is that it continues to save people, pass them from death to life, and bring them into the eternal kingdom of God.
Conclusion: We are all ambassadors of the kingdom of God
As true sons of the gospel, and even more so as children of the heavenly Father, we must care for the things concerning God the Father, since this is the Great Commission of the gospel!

Numbers Chapter 36: Holding on to Your God-given Inheritance
GK611 Morning Devotion
16/05/2024
The Morning Devotion Speaker: Ps Deborah Tan
Introduction: The Dog and the Bone
1. The Crisis of the Lost inheritance (v1-4)
Today’s passage picks up on the issue of the daughters of Zelophehad inheriting their father’s inheritance in chapter 27. It is the issue concerning the potential reduction of their tribe’s inheritance when the daughter who had gained the inheritance grew up and married. So they came to Moses and the leaders to ask for a solution.
(1) Valuing the inheritance given by God
The Israelites bore inheritance according to the names of their ancestral tribes. The inheritance not only symbolised the continuation of the family’s and tribe’s covenant relationship with God, but also meant that they would continue to be remembered by God for generations to come. Therefore, for the people, they valued the inheritance that God had given them, and it was of utmost importance that they kept their inheritance.
Brothers and sisters, what is the inheritance that God has given you? Will you cherish it?
(2) The effect of marriage on inheritance
The inheritance of the daughters of Zelophehad was tied to their marriage. So whoever they married, their inheritance would eventually go to the tribe they married.
Be careful who you choose to associate with in marriage. Believer and unbeliever cannot share the same yoke. Do not allow yourself to be caught up in a crisis of losing your inheritance and forsaking God.
Summary:
Ask God to give us a spirit of vigilance and self-discipline to hold on to a good relationship with Him. Don’t let marriage, busyness, worldly possessions, hardship, etc., lead us away from God. God is our inheritance, our treasure. He is our only reason and purpose for living on this earth.
2. Guidance for holding the inheritance (v5-6)
(1) God’s willingness to interact (v5)
God, being an all-knowing God, had known that the daughters of Zelophehad would ask for a share of the inheritance to keep the name of their father. He also knew that later on there would be a marriage of the daughter and the inheritance might go to another tribe. But He did not initiate a solution. Why?
God is a willing God who interacts with people. He is waiting for man to bring the problem to Him and seek to wait for His guidance. Only the one who thirsts for God must be guided by Him.
Brothers and sisters, are you facing difficulties and challenges? God is waiting for you.
(2) God gives strategies to guide people (v6)
Through Moses, God gave a strategy to guide the people on how to hold on to their inheritance and not to move to another tribe. This meant marrying into the same tribe. This principle, applied to Christians today, is ‘Marry as you wish, but to a man of the same faith in Christ’.
This is a very important strategy that God has given to people in marriage. This is because different faiths bring different values, ways of doing things and concepts of raising children. So it can lead to many problems in marriage.
3. The response of holding to the inheritance (v7-10)
(1) Taking responsibility for keeping your own inheritance (v7, 9)
The Scriptures remind the people of Israel 2 times to take responsibility for keeping their own inheritance, so that what God had given them would be preserved. As God’s children, we also have responsibilities in life, work, and ministry. Those who are in the workplace are not too lazy to fulfil their responsibilities at work. Those who are pursuing studies should study hard. Parents are responsible for raising their children, not leaving them in the hands of housemaids.
Spiritually, keep your bodies in holiness and honour. Physically, have a healthy body to serve God well. Whatever God has entrusted to you, hold it carefully in the fear of God. For all will be accounted for before the Lord.
(2) Be willing to be bound and to submit to authority (v8, 10)
The daughters of Zelophehad were willing to submit to the commands of authority and to be emotionally bound by the laws set by God. Marrying only to the tribe of Joseph’s sons, the sons of Manasseh.
As the saying goes, there are laws of the land and rules of the house. To hold on to our God-given inheritance, we must be like, willing to be bound to observe the laws set by God.
4. Remembered by God and was set as an example (v11-13)
The names of the daughters of Zelophehad, Mahlah, Tirzah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Noah, are memorialised by God and recorded in the Bible four times. God codified the commands given to them for all the tribes and their descendants to follow. So that they would be an example to all. What a glorious testimony!
Conclusion: Getting a heavenly inheritance
Each person can only live once. Let us live out the destiny and calling that God has given us in this life. Let’s live out the destiny and calling that God has given us in this life, and gain the eternal inheritance in heaven that God has already prepared for us. So that He may be glorified!

Numbers Chapter 35: Becoming a Dwelling Place of God’s Holiness
GK611 Morning Devotion
15/05/2024
The Morning Devotion Speaker: Ps Stella Ling
Introduction:
God desires that His people, in the midst of the dwelling place He has prepared for them, will continue to be God-centred and holy in all aspects of their lives.
1. Living in grace (v1-8)
God scattered the Levites among the twelve tribes in order that they might teach the people the law and be responsible for administering judgment. The Levites received a dwelling place among God’s people and brought them into grace to help God’s people live in the promises for a long time.
2. God is mindful of mercy (v9-32)
(1) God will show mercy to man (v9-15)
People are created in the image of God, and whether they are killed or murderers, their lives are equally precious in God’s sight. God also does not want to see sinners who kill people by mistake fall into death, and therefore specifically set up a “city of refuge” (v11) for the people, with the intention of making a way out for them so that they can be redeemed.
(2) Therefore, if you kill someone, you will be put to death (v16-21,30-31)
God’s purpose in arranging the refuge from the city was not to condone sin, but to redeem those who had not willfully sinned. Therefore, those who kill for a reason will be put to death, and only those who kill by mistake will enjoy the shelter from the cities of refuge. Whoever kills a man intentionally, for whatever reason, his blood will be shed.
(3) The manslayer is saved (v22-29)
The manslayer will be judged in the city of refuge. If he is convicted of manslaughter, he will remain in the city until the death of the anointed high priest, when he may leave the city and return to his home, and those who avenge his death will not be allowed to kill him. But if the manslayer disregards God’s mercy and goes out of the city of refuge, the avenger of blood shall kill him without the sin of bloodshed.
Summary:
The “cities of refuge” reveals on the one hand God’s righteousness and holiness in not allowing sin to remain among the people, and on the other hand reveals God’s mercy, grace, and love in giving hope to those who are willing to confess their sins and repent.
3. God’s holy dwelling place (v33-34)
Because God dwelt in the midst of Israel and revealed Himself through Israel, the people were not to defile the land in which they dwelt, or God would surely pursue them. For the land belongs to God, and God is holy. Therefore, God wanted the people to set up such an important arrangement as a “city of refuge” precisely so that the people could not defile the land they lived in, and live long in the promises of God.
Conclusion:
Brothers and sisters, God dwells among us today, and we are the dwelling place of the Holy Spirit. Therefore, we should not allow the world and the enemy to defile our bodies, minds, words and deeds, so that God will always be with us and be pleased with us.

Numbers Chapter 34: Inheriting God’s Promises with Great Faith
GK611 Morning Devotion
14/05/2024
The Morning Devotion Speaker: IP Asher Chang
Introduction: “Second best” is the enemy of “the best”!
1. Faith receives the unseen (V1-15)
In the previous chapter, God, through Moses, constantly reminded the Israelites about the experiences of the previous generation, reminding them to be mindful to the doubts and complaints of the previous generation against God.
However, in today’s chapter, God also shows His love and still chooses the next generation and gives them great promises! However, despite God’s generosity, from a practical point of view, the Israelites did not fully receive God’s promises, because this requires faith to carry on. To obtain God’s promises, we not only need to have faith, but also need to have “great faith” to cope with challenges and tests!
2. God Himself chooses those who have faith (V16-29)
The leaders of the previous generation were Moses and Aaron, but in the new generation, God chose Eleazar (Aaron’s son) and Joshua (Moses’ helper) as leaders and divided the four territories among Israel’s nine and a half tribe. In addition, God selected a leader from each tribe to help them.
The Israelites of an earlier generation sent spies to spy out the Promised Land, but with the exception of Joshua and Caleb, everyone else cowered in fear. Their cowardice caused them to miss out on God’s promises and incur God’s wrath.
However, in the new generation, when God Himself selected new leaders through Moses, they did not back down but accepted this responsibility with confidence. Brothers and sisters, the Bible constantly reminds us that God’s promises require faith to receive. Only those who respond bravely and firmly believe in God’s faithfulness will be selected by God and can obtain the Promised Land!
Conclusion: Follow God’s instructions with the eyes of faith!
We must remember not to be satisfied with the idleness of the moment, but to focus on the great promises God has given us! We should pursue with determination what God has promised rather than settling for immediate idleness and satisfaction.
God promises that we will not only be the head and not the tail; be above only, and not be beneath; He promises that we will become princes and princesses, a kingdom of priests, God’s people; He promises to be close to us every day, and to have a great presence among us.
However, the reality is that we are often unwilling to respond to and receive these promises. We are content with small happiness, just like the two and a half tribes who stayed on the east side of the Jordan, unwilling to enter the land promised by God. We must be alerted to transcend the limitations of small faith and use greater faith to receive God’s best promises!

Numbers Chapter 33: Remember the Lessons and Embrace the Promises
GK611 Morning Devotion
10/05/2024
The Morning Devotion Speaker: IP Asher Chang
Introduction: Remember its source and never forget the grace of God.
1. Reflect on the salvation given by God (V1-4)
The past scripture in Numbers Chapter 32 records the forty years of Israel’s experience and lessons in the wilderness. They were originally a large group of people, but gradually this generation passed away, and a new generation emerged at that time. God opened up a new way for the Israelites and gave a new generation a new mission, which was to enter the land He promised.
The Israelites set out from Rameses, a city in Egypt. They set out without fear, for God had struck down all the firstborn in Egypt and destroyed their gods. God struck fear into Egypt through ten plagues, and eventually the Israelites left the land with the Egyptians’ gold, silver, jewelry, and livestock. God wanted them to remember all this and remember God’s faithfulness. We must also always remember that His salvation and power prevail over all national and spiritual idols and evil spirits.
2. Remember the lessons of the past (V5-49)
(1) Rameses to the wilderness of Sinai (V5-15)
On Mount Sinai, God made a covenant with Moses and He wrote the law with his finger on two tablets of stone. However, when Moses made a covenant with God, the Israelites made a golden calf at the foot of the mountain, indulged in sexual immorality in front of the golden calf, and turned away from God. Because of these actions, God was so angry that the tablets of the law were broken into pieces.
Through the teachings of the Israelites, we should be vigilant. Sometimes we may feel that we are with God, but if our hearts are not right, we may give birth to a golden calf at any time and forget about God.
(2) Mount Sinai to Mount Hor (V16-39)
One of the most impressive events in this journey is the incident of Moses striking the rock. Because of his own anger, he lost his temper with God, disobeyed God, and struck the rock twice with his rod. God rebuked Moses and Aaron of not honouring Him and therefore were not allowed to enter the land of Canaan.
This experience reminds us that leaders must be careful not to be driven by emotions and flesh, as this can cause us to lose the blessings God has promised. God’s standards for leaders are very high, and their responsibilities are even greater. Therefore, we do need to be cautious and moral and fear God.
(3) Mount Hor to the plains of Moab (V40-49)
In the plains of Moab, they reemphasized God’s commandments. The lesson to remember here is that although they were allied with Baal-Peor and Balaam’s curse could not harm Israel, when their deception was exposed, they turned away from God and indulged in sexual immorality with the women of Moab and Midian, and gradually move the tent and connect with the idol.
At this point, they crossed God’s bottom line, causing the plague to come. The plague did not stop until Phinehas came out and killed Cozbi. This incident reminds us to keep God’s bottom line and teachings in mind and reiterate God’s commandments. The previous generation has passed away, and the new generation must remember this warning and step into Canaan.
3. Embrace the promises and connect with God (V50-56)
God made a covenant with the Israelites through Moses to dwell with them, so the Israelites lived in tents in the wilderness, and God also dwelt among them. God guided them during these forty years, was closely connected with them, and was with them forever. And whether it is weather, shelter, food, water, and everything else we need, God has provided it. Therefore, every family should be closely connected to God and ready to follow His guidance, just as one sets off when he sees a pillar of cloud.
If we want to embrace the promises God has given us, the first thing we need to do is to embrace God and connect with God. Just like the prerequisite for God to establish contact with the Israelites is that they must first tear down their idols and drive away the idolaters. This is not something to wait until they are settled, their bags are packed, their land is allocated, and their vines are planted. God’s bottom line is not to abandon Him and not to be associated with idols.
Conclusion: Learn the lesson, repent, don’t repeat it, connect with God, and enter into the promise!
Our lives will inevitably go through many lessons like those experienced by the Israelites, but the important thing is that we learn the lessons, rise to repent, connect with God again, and continue to move forward in God’s way, because Jehovah is our God!

Numbers 32 Is this really good enough?
GK611 Morning Devotion
9 May 2024
The Morning Devotion Speaker: Ps Deborah
Introduction: Chickens and Birds
1. What you see with the naked eye: really good? (v1-15)
1) What the naked eye sees blinds (v1-5)
God caused the Israelites to capture many cattle, sheep and property in the battle with the Midianites, and distributed them to each tribe. The tribes of Reuben and Gad saw that the land of Jazer and Gilead, a large fertile grassland, was very suitable for their numerous livestock, so they decided to stay and build homes. So they came to Moses and asked not to lead them across the Jordan River. It means giving up entering the promised land given by God.
Brothers and sisters, when you are surrounded by abundance, what your eyes see is very important. If we only focus on our abundant resources, we will be like the descendants of Reuben and Gad and easily fall into complacency. Fall into spiritual blindness. We will forget that the riches we live in all come from God, and we will begin to care less about God’s things and be unwilling to pay the price for the kingdom of God.
2) Be careful not to let history repeat itself (v6-15)
When Moses heard that these two tribes were proposing to give up entering Canaan, he was very angry. Moses sternly warned them not to let history repeat itself and provoke God’s wrath, causing the Israelites to be left to perish in the wilderness again.
Brothers and sisters, will we also be like the descendants of Reuben and Gad? Who always feel that church matters should be served by others. Preaching the gospel and visiting communities, I rarely have a Saturday off and let others do it. Do we adopt the attitude of everyone cleaning up their own affairs, content with just being saved, satisfied that we do not need to perish, regardless of the life and death of those around us? Let the number of people in hell continue to increase?
Summary:
Not only is what the naked eye sees not the best, but it often prevents people from entering into the heart of God’s promises. Ask God to open our spiritual eyes. Let us be in abundance and understand God’s will through spiritual eyes when making choices.
2. Choose the second best: Is this good enough? (v16-24)
1) Compromise is not a good plan (v16-19)
Moses’ harsh rebuke did not change the minds of the descendants of Gad and Reuben. Instead, compromise proposals were made. They left their livestock, women and children at east of the Jordan River. But promised Moses that their males would take the lead and fight alongside the other tribes until all the other tribes settled in the land of Canaan.
This clever suggestion may seem like the best of both worlds to humans, but it is not God’s intention. People are foolish in spiritual things because they are too smart in earthly things. Ask God to destroy our earthly cleverness!
2) Permission is not a promise (v20-24)
Moses listened to their suggestions and saw that they were determined to have their own way, so he agreed to give them the east side of the Jordan River.
Permission is not a promise. When they choose to give up the promised land given by God, it typifies that they have left God’s protection and are easily attacked by the enemy and reap the consequences.
Example: When Lot fled Sodom, he did not want to go to the mountain that God had promised. He chose to flee to the nearby town of Zoar. Although it was allowed, the Bible records that his two daughters subsequently committed incest with their father. Gave birth to Moab and Ammon (later enemies of Israel). King Hezekiah gained 15 more years of life with God’s permission, but these 15 years were neither a blessing for him nor Judah.
Let us choose God’s promises accurately, not permission. Because God’s ‘promise’ is the best, but God’s ‘permission’ is only the second best.
3. Insisting on the second best: Is it a curse or a blessing? (v25-42)
V30 Moses explained that if the two tribes failed to fulfil their promises, they would not be able to obtain the east side of the Jordan River, but they would be able to inherit the promised land among the Israelites in the land of Canaan. The purpose was to reiterate that west of the Jordan River was God’s promised land to them. But it is a pity that these tribes, which had been blinded by the lust of their eyes, finally insisted on choosing the second best.
What are the negative consequences of insisting on choosing the second best?
1) Will shirk responsibility (v25, 27, 31)
It had been their choice from beginning to end, but now they turned around and said they would do what Moses and God commanded.
There was a brother who likes sister very much. He reckons her as the partner God wants to give him. Even though the cell leader reminded him, in the end his own desires were still higher than God’s will. When he gets unhappy in his marriage, he turns to blame God and the cell leader for why he came to bless him at his wedding in the first place?
2) Family damage (v26)
v17 mentions that this place is not very safe, so a fortified city needs to be built to protect women and children. But the children of Gad and Reuben insisted on leaving their wives and children at the east of the river and going to fight on their own, as if for the sake of their families. In fact, they felt that it is inconvenient to take them to fight, and they didn’t want to be dragged down.
When husbands and fathers are away from home for long periods of time, it has many negative impacts on wives and children. Absent fathers affect children’s interpersonal relationships, relationships with partners when they grow up, parents and children relationship, distorted family values, etc.
In addition, leaving the children in East of the Jordan deprived them of the experience of facing the enemy. This is why when Assyria came to attack them, they were easily defeated and taken captive.
3) Offend the weak (v33)
Originally, they were only the descendants of Gad and Reuben, but now there is half a tribe of Manasseh?
Although man’s fallen nature is easily tempted by worldly things and greed. But Jesus said, “It is inevitable that things will offend others, but woe to him who offends them!”
When we choose the easier path, we can easily trip up others. They stumbled like half the tribe of Manasseh. Let us not be the one who offend the weak.
4) Losing the goal of life (v32-33)
When we abandon the promises of God and insist on our own opinions, we gradually lose the purpose of life. Like half the tribe of Manasseh, they were led by the world.
Brothers and sisters, are you following God or following the crowd in this world?
5) No matter how good it is, it’s all in vain (v34-42)
This long passage mentions that both tribes received a lot of fertile land. Manasseh also rose up and took Gilead, driving out the Amorites there. Everything is ideal. But when people give up on God’s promises and choose the second best, the consequence is that no matter how good they are, it will be in vain.
In 1 Chronicles 5, they soon mixed with the foreigners and followed their gods to commit sexual immorality. They were the first to be taken captive by Assyria when the nation of Israel fell.
Conclusion: The best is achieved without losing the promise
Let us not settle for just that. Rather, strive to pursue the best blessings God has promised.

Numbers 31: Battles won by Relying on God
GK611 Morning Devotion
08 May 2024
The Morning Devotion Speaker: Ps Stella Ling
Introduction:
Through Moses, God commanded the people of Israel to attack the Midianites in order to avenge the idolatry and adultery that the Midianites had induced the Israelites to do in the past.
1. Learning to trust God and do His will (v1-12)
(1) Trust with all your heart (v1-6)
God commanded only 12,000 men to go out to war, but the result was a complete victory, and not one of them died in battle, showing that the battle did not depend on the number of warriors, but that God Himself was at war. Moreover, Moses sent with him Phinehas, the son of the priest, and took with him the vessels of the sanctuary, representing the presence of God, and the trumpet, representing the command of God. Therefore, when they won the battle, they knew that it was the Lord who had made them victorious, and not by their own power.
(2) Doing what God commands (v7-12)
Although we know that God could have struck down the Midianites Himself without relying on man, God told the people of Israel to rise up and strike them down themselves, for Israel had allowed the seduction of the Midianite women, and now they must rise up and attack them themselves. So the twelve thousand Israelite males fought against the Midianites, killed all the males, and took captive the Midianite women and children, their livestock, their flocks, and all their possessions, as the LORD had commanded Moses.
2. Eliminating sin completely and pursuing holiness (v13-24)
(1) Complete elimination of sin (v13-18)
The Israelites were tempted by the Midianites to sin against the LORD by idolatry and adultery in the matter of Peor, so that the plague came upon the congregation of the LORD. Therefore, they were enemies of God and Israel and needed to be gotten rid of without leaving a gap for the people.
Today, we too must never condone sin in our lives, but must turn away from it completely in order to enter into the Promised Land that God has given us.
(2) Pursuing holiness (v19-24)
Death is unclean before God. Therefore, whoever kills a man and whoever touches the body of a slain man is unclean, and they must be cleansed for seven days by putting through the fire and purifying by water.
From this, we can see that God values holiness very highly. And, we also know that we cannot see God unless we are holy. Although ritual purification has been terminated by what Jesus Christ accomplished on the cross, God still requires us today to live out holiness in all aspects of our lives.
3. Victory by relying on God, Glory to God (v25-54)
(1) Remembering God’s Grace (v25-37)
The defeat of Midian’s army with an army of 12,000 men, the captivity of 32,000 women and 88,000 livestock of all kinds, was only possible by God’s special plan and protection. From this it is clear that this war was a holy war conducted by God Himself. Therefore, they shall offer sacrifices of thanksgiving to God.
(2) Glory to God (v48-54)
The Israelites knew that it was due to God’s proctection that they could win the battle and not be short of a man. The number of men sent by Israel was only 12,000, so Israel would have lost the battle just by looking at the numbers, but with God fighting for the people, God gave Israel a great victory. This was entirely a marvelous work of God, and it was God who kept and cared for His people.
As a result, these 132 military leaders gave an average of 1.45 kilograms of gold each, for a total of 16,750 shekels. This gold was brought into the tabernacle to be used as a memorial for Israel before the LORD.
Conclusion:
Brothers and sisters, a battle with God’s presence can only be won, because what is of God will be accomplished. The Israelites successfully attacked the Midianites without damaging a single soldier. It was not that the Israelites were so good at fighting, but God accomplished it behind the scenes. Therefore, we ask God to help us to walk with Him by consulting His will in everything we do or decide. For God alone enables us to live a victorious life.
