Numbers 30: When wives and daughters make vows, men are responsible
GK611 Morning Devotion
07 May 2024
The Morning Devotion Speaker: Ps Daniel Kew

Introduction:

This chapter talks about the situation in which a husband treats his wife, and a father treats his daughter under the rules of making vows. The daughter is still young and still in her father’s house. In the male society at that time, women did not necessarily have the ability and power to fulfil their vows. Therefore, to protect women, God has clearly laid down rules for making vows here. If a woman makes a vow, the man who is the head of the family is also responsible.

1. People cannot break their vows to God (V1-2)

The first principle of making a vow is put forward here. Anyone who makes a vow to God must fulfil his vow seriously and must not break his promise.

The original text of “broken words” is “blasphemous words”. If a person does not care about his commitment to God, he will not only ‘blaspheme’ his own words, but he will also blaspheme and offend God. Duplicitous people can deceive themselves and others, but they cannot escape the eyes of God. Therefore, what we say to God should be how we live out it. Matthew 5:37 But let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No,’ ‘No.’ For whatever is more than these is from the evil one.

2. An unmarried woman’s vow is bound by her father (V3-5)

If the father is silent when his daughter makes a vow, her vow shall stand. If the father does not agree, the vow will be voided, and God will release the daughter.

The father is the head of the family and the spiritual head of the family. He is responsible for the spiritual condition of the whole family. Therefore, when a father hears his daughter’s vow, he must speak out and protect his children, and the children must obey their father.

3. A woman’s vows before marriage are bound by her husband (V6-8)

At that time, from the time a woman got engaged, even if she was married, the woman’s covering was transferred from her father to her husband. If there was a vow, and the husband remained silent, the wife’s vow shall stand. If overrules, the vow made will be voided.

What is emphasised here is that not only are men’s words powerful, but silence is also powerful. In this case, silence expresses tacit approval. Therefore, the words or silence of the head of the family are effective! Men must be responsible for their own statements!

4. The vow of a widow or a divorced woman should be bound by oneself (V9)

Widows or divorced women, because they do not have the covering of their husbands, are responsible to God for the vows they make. So, they have to be more careful about what they say.

5. The husband holds the responsibility of the wife’s vows (V10-16)

The vows made by a married woman in her husband’s house must be based on what the husband has decided, because the husband has authority. If a husband remains silent on the day when he hears his wife making a vow, he has confirmed the vow. Even if the husband is to void it later, God will still require him to bear the sins of his wife and hold him accountable for the sin of not performing spiritual responsibilities in time.

Conclusion:

This chapter records the regulations for making vows because God wanted the Israelites to understand that making vows requires them to fulfil their obligations and responsibilities to God!

What is more emphasised in this passage is the responsibility of men! As the head of the family, God gives men the authority to stop bad decisions! You also have the responsibility to make good decisions! God wants men to manage their own homes! Lead the whole family into God’s promises! Therefore, husbands should fear God more!

Book of Numbers 29

Numbers Chapter 29: Preparing for the Marriage Supper of the Lamb
GK611 Morning Devotion
03/05/2024
The Morning Devotion Speaker: IP Asher Chang

Introduction: Don’t bring two bunch of bananas

1. Sacrifice for the Feast of Trumpets (V1-6)

The first day of July (the month of Tishri) is the Feast of Trumpets, the Jewish Lunar New Year. God commanded that on this day the trumpet should be blown as a memorial, and no customary work should be done, but an offering made by fire should be offered to the Lord. On this day, a burnt offering with a sweet aroma was to be offered, requiring one bull, one ram, and seven one-year-old lambs. Besides these there shall be a grain offering of fine flour mixed with oil; three-tenths of an ephah for a bull; two-tenths of an ephah for a ram; and a tenth of an ephah for each of the seven lambs. Offer one-tenth of the law. A male goat must also be offered as a sin offering.

The Feast of Trumpets is on the first day of the seventh month and the first day of the new moon. On this day, not only the regular burnt offerings, the new moon burnt offerings, and the sin offerings must be offered, but additional burnt offerings and sin offerings must be offered. Brothers and sisters, here we are reminded that at the beginning of every month and every year, we must come before God and ask the Holy Spirit to enlighten us, deal with our sins, and seek God’s approval.

2. Sacrifice to be offered on the Day of Atonement (V7-11)

The content of the sacrifices on the Day of Atonement is the same as that on the Day of Trumpets. On this day, God kept instructing the people to observe a holy meeting and to harden their hearts, that is, to humble their hearts and come before God to atone for their sins. God reminded the people very sternly that anyone who does not harden his heart and does any work on that day will be cut off from among the people. Everyone is to keep this day as a holy Sabbath, and they are to discipline their souls. From the evening of the ninth day of this month to the evening of the next day, they are to keep it as a Sabbath.

3. Sacrifice for the Feast of Tabernacles (V12-38)

The Feast of Tabernacles begins on July 15th. The number of burnt offerings offered at this feast is particularly large, because the Feast of Tabernacles is the last feast of the year, which typifies the day when God’s eternal plan is completed. At that time, the whole earth will be overflowing with God’s grace. The people in the fullness actively offer themselves to God and acknowledge that Christ is Lord and King. The Feast of Tabernacles also represents God’s tabernacle in the world, God’s dwelling with man, and it also represents the wedding supper of the Lamb.

Conclusion: Look forward to God’s feasts and prepare yourself to give willingly (V39-40)

Brothers and sisters, God told the Israelites today that the sacrifices they made were very numerous and careful. Although we don’t need to bring so many sacrifices to come before God today, we can think about what preparations and expectations we bring every time we come. Are we really ready for God’s feasts? What have you prepared for God? Have you set aside God’s feasts? Let us prepare ourselves and look forward to God’s feasts every year!

Book of Numbers 28

Numbers 28 Living A God- Centred Life
GK611 Morning Devotion
02 May 2024
The Morning Devotion Speaker: Ps Stella Ling

Introduction:

God asked Moses to consolidate the sacrificial ordinances of the past, which were scattered at different times, and to make known to the people in the plains of Moab the sacrifices to be offered at the daily, weekly, monthly, and even yearly festivals. The purpose was to make it clear to the second generation of the people who were about to enter the Promised Land that, whether in the wilderness or in the land of Canaan, only by living a God-centered life every day would they be able to live in God’s presence and promises for a long time.

1. The offering of day and night – daily offering (V3-8)

Here again God reminds the people of the need to offer themselves wholly both morning and evening. By offering burnt offerings twice a day, morning and evening, God’s people were actually reminding us today that every day should begin and end in worship, and that every day we should be renewed by following God’s heart through worship.

2. Doubling the offering – weekly offering (V9-10)

This was the first time that God commanded the people to “offer a burnt offering every Sabbath”, so it was a new addition to the offering. Here we see that each Sabbath the people were to offer additional sacrifices to their “regular burnt offerings” (V6). For the people of Israel, they sought God’s greater favour with greater offerings in order to enjoy God’s rest more greatly.

Today, the burnt offerings we offer on the Sabbath are worship. If there is no worship and only rest on the Sabbath, the rest becomes idleness, and joy and rest become empty words.

3. The complete Offering – The monthly offering (V11-15)

The “first day of the month” was the first day of the month. God commanded that burnt offerings and sin offerings be offered on the first day of the month in addition to the regular burnt offerings (V15). This is to remind us that if we want to seek God’s favour, we must regularly reflect on and deal with our own sins, lest we become numb in our sins, become accustomed to sinning, and even enjoy the pleasures of sin, so that we die in our sins.

4. Remembering God’s salvation-festival offerings (V16-31)

(1) The Passover (V16-25)

For the Israelites, the important feasts of the year included: the Passover, the
Feast of Weeks and also the Feast of the Blowing of the Horns, the Day of Atonement, and the Feast of Tabernacles in Numbers 29. Sacrifices were offered at all of these feasts so that the Israelites would remember God’s salvation in them. For us today, remembering the Passover helps us to think even more about God’s work and salvation in our lives. And the Feast of Unleavened Bread reminds us that in receiving the salvation of the Passover, we must be completely purged from sin in our lives.

(2) The Feast of Weeks (V26-31)

The “Feast of Weeks” was a celebration of the wheat harvest of the Israelites. Now that they had a rich harvest in the land, they knew deep down that they were enjoying God’s grace and were living in His faithfulness and were greatly blessed.

Conclusion:

Brothers and sisters, the sacrifices were God’s reminder to the Israelites that they needed to follow God, and that they needed to follow every day. Today God is similarly calling us to connect with Him through sacrifice. Pray that we will develop this spiritual norm and live in God’s presence and promises. He loves us, saves us, promises to be with me, and brings us into the richer “land of milk and honey”. May we live each day with God at the centre of our lives!

1. Even if there is no male, you can still get the land (V1-11)

(1) Sisters who bravely come forward (V1-4)

Zelophehad’s daughters had no father or brothers to inherit the property, so they came bravely to explain their family’s situation and needs, and made appeals, hoping that the land inheritance could be preserved for their father. Because they believed in God’s promise and believed that the Israelites would possess the land according to God’s Words.

God’s promises are true and will come true! It’s a pity that some people don’t care and don’t take it seriously, and some even don’t want it, so they can’t get it.

(2) Moses finalised the decision according to God’s instructions (V5-11)

Moses presented the case of the five sisters before God and decided the case according to God’s instructions. The five sisters, who originally had no inheritance, became the first women in Israel to inherit their father’s family property! Moses also received instructions from God and set regulations for the inheritance of the Israelites, which must be observed from generation to generation.

We can bring our matters before God with confidence, and we can also present other people’s matters before God. Our God, who is fair, righteous, and full of grace and mercy, will surely fulfill His promise!

2. Even violated the law, still receive God’s favour (V12-23)

(1) God comforts in punishment (V12-14)

Moses sinned against God by striking the rock at Meribah so he could not enter God’s Promised Land. This was something God had already announced to Moses. Moses had no complaints in his heart because he knew he was in the wrong. But God still favoured Moses and came to comfort him personally, saying that he would let him see the Promised Land with his own eyes! After seeing it, you will surely return to the eternal Promised Land of your ancestors!

Our God is not to be mocked. The more He uses you, the higher He will demand from you! But God has comfort and a way out of punishment. Because God is love, discipline is to make people realise their sins and repent.

(2) Moses prays for new leaders for the people (V15-17)

Moses obeyed God’s arrangement and did not feel sorry for his future. Instead, he interceded for the people who had disappointed him many times and asked God to appoint a new good leader to lead the Israelites. For Moses, the blessing of the people after they entered the Promised Land was more important than him not being able to enter the Promised Land.

This is an example of responsible leaders! Spiritual leaders fulfill people, promote people, and are not jealous of people! Do everything for the sake of the people and go beyond your benefits!

(3) God chooses Joshua to succeed Moses (V18-23)

It turns out that God already has a man after His own heart, and that is Joshua. God told Moses to bring Joshua before the congregation, honour him, and appoint him as their successor. The people would not be in a situation without a shepherd, and Moses could rest assured.

True obedience means that even if you don’t get the credit, you still hope that matters related to God will be accomplished!

Conclusion:

Whether it was the five sisters who were originally unable to inherit the inheritance, or Moses who was not allowed to enter the Promised Land, God favoured them and fulfilled them according to His promise!

When we seek God’s help in everything and obey God’s instructions, God will fulfill His promises in our lives!
