Book of Numbers 15

Numbers Chapter 15: God is Gracious
GK611 Morning Devotion
05/4/2024
The Morning Devotion Speaker: IP Asher Chang

Introduction:

Although the sacrifices in today’s scripture seem to be prepared for the next generation of Israelites, God chose to speak to the previous generation of Israelites while they were still there. God has grace. He allows us to know Him better and even lets us know how we can reconcile with Him after sinning.

1. Let the world rebuild its relationship with God (V1-21)

(1) Present a fragrant offering willingly (V1-10)

In the previous chapters, God wanted to leave the Israelites because of their sin, but Moses prayed for them and God did not disown them because of their transgression. Instead, God told them that anyone willing could come and offer sacrifices and establish a relationship with God. When the Israelites entered the Promised Land, they could present fragrant offerings to the Lord as long as they were willing. Such offerings include offerings made by fire, grain offerings, and drink offerings, and are divided into several levels.

As long as the people’s hearts are willing, they can choose different levels of offerings and sacrifices according to their own wishes and financial status. In addition to the sacrifice of bulls or sheep, grain offerings and drink offerings were also required. “Grain offering” means willing offering, that is, offering it willingly. “Drink offering” is irrevocable sacrifice, indicating that the relationship with God cannot be changed. These fragrant offerings are used to build a relationship with God.

(2) Gentiles also have grace (V11-16)

After entering the land of Canaan, both the Israelites and Gentiles should behave in this way as long as they present “offering made by fire, a sweet aroma.” This shows that only by relying on the life given by God and practising the spiritual truth of the promise in the Promised Land, the burnt offering and peace offering can be accepted by God.

(3) Offer sacrifices and always give thanks (V17-21)

The descendants of the Israelites were able to enter the land of Canaan only by the grace of God. To show their gratitude, they offered incense offering and heave offering. Although God’s grace is given free of charge, we should maintain a willing giving attitude when receiving grace. Although this may seem contradictory, because grace does not require a price, in order to express our cherishment and gratitude for God’s grace, we are willing to pay a price and offer a fragrant offering and a heave offering, which demonstrates the attitude of our relationship with God.

Today, we no longer need to sacrifice cattle and sheep, but we should learn to be grateful and not take God’s grace for granted.

2. Let sinners reconcile their relationship with God (V22-36)

(1) The sin of doing the wrong thing (V22-31)

What should we do when someone commits a crime? There are two ways of dealing with this: if it is an unintentional sin, either the individual or the entire congregation must offer a fragrant offering and a sin offering; if the sin is committed intentionally, then he must be removed from the people. The Israelites are reminded here not to deliberately blaspheme God. If we sin today, our sin offering is Jesus. As long as we come to Jesus and ask for forgiveness, we will be forgiven.

(2) Crimes committed knowingly (V32-36)

What this refers to is those who knew it was the Sabbath but still went to collect sticks. Their sin should be punished by death. Overall, God wants to have a relationship with us, and even when we sin, He still gives us grace and gives us a way out. But God also makes it clear that if sin is committed intentionally, there is no more grace.

In the New Testament, the Lord Jesus said that all sins can be forgiven except blasphemy against the Holy Spirit. In the Old Testament, the sin of despising God was a very serious one.

3. He wants to be our God (V37-41)

God commanded the Israelites to make tassels and put a blue thread on them. The purpose was to impress upon them the need to be grateful and obey God’s commandments because blue symbolises the kingdom of heaven. Everyone is God’s people and the status of belonging to God.

“I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, to be your God. I am the Lord your God.” (v.41) God promised to be our God, and we must raise to respond to God and build a relationship with Him, cherish God’s presence, always remember that He is our God, and follow His will.

Conclusion: What God has prepared for us is the way of grace

Although people have sinned, God still provides a way out for people, which is to confess their sins and offer fragrant offering and sin offering. God will guide us forward.

Numbers 14: Stop complaining and enter into the promise
GK611 Morning Devotion
04 April 2024
The Morning Devotion Speaker: Ps Stella Ling

Introduction:

When we allow ourselves to be immersed in difficult situations and indulge in grumbling, we lose the light in our hearts. As a result, we not only lose sight of the road ahead, but we also forget the grace and faithfulness of God that we have experienced in the past, and live in bitterness.

1. Causes of complaining (v1-10)

(1) Unbelief (v1-4)

The people had experienced the power of God in the past, but they had not been able to trust Him, so that they were disoriented by the so-called bad reports they had heard. As a result, they began to complain against Moses and against God. Because of their unbelief, they went so far as to make a decision to “let us select a leader and return to Egypt” and go back to being slaves again.

(2) Fear (v5-10)

Because of fear, in the eyes of the ten spies, they saw the land of Canaan as “a land that devours its inhabitants”. However, in the eyes of Joshua and Caleb, “they are our bread”. When the people were overcome with fear in their hearts, they were even angry enough to stone them.

2. Moses intercedes with God (v11-35)

(1) Humble Intercession for forgiveness (v11-19)

If a person turns away from God’s blessing through unbelief, they will inevitably face a curse. However, Moses humbly came to God to intercede for the people, invoking the self-revelation of God’s nature and touching God’s heart.

(2) God performs righteousness and mercy (v20-35)

Although God continued to treat Israel as His own people and inheritance according to His “according to the greatness of Your mercy, just as You have forgiven this people,”, He did not exempt them from the punishment of righteousness. They still had to pay the price for their sins in that they were not allowed to enter the Promised Land that God had sworn to their fathers, but were to die in the wilderness, but He was to lead a new and grown generation into the Promised Land.

3. Eliminate sins and follow God (v36-45)

The curse of God came upon the ten spies and caused them to die of the plague. God wanted the people to see and believe that He had the power to bring the plague on “ho brought the evil report about the land, died by the plague” and to bring their women and children into the Promised Land. Furthermore, they were to spend thirty-eight years in the wilderness learning lessons of faith and obedience.

Conclusion: Overcome Complaining and receive the promise!

Pray that our Heavenly Father will open our spiritual eyes, so that we can learn lessons from history, and remove the evil heart of unbelief, forsaking God and complaining against people, so that we will not lose the abundant promises of God!

Book of Numbers 13

Numbers 13: From Vision to Action

GK611 Morning Devotion
03 April 2024
The Morning Devotion Speaker: Rev David Tan

Introduction:

Vision is a “seeing” in thought; Movement is a “practice” in action.
A life of fulfillment of God’s destiny is to go from vision to action.

1. Being a leader to explore the land (V1-15)

Leadership is to have a vision. Vision comes from seeing the way ahead, and this seeing needs to be coupled with faith from God. Our church is also coming to another stage of exploring the land. The property we have at present is very small, and there are indeed many limitations for a 100-person auditorium to supply a congregation of more than 300 people. Therefore, we have to continue to pray and seek God’s heart, where is the future Promised Land?

Each tribe was to send out a leader, as the tribes needed to hear first-hand from their leaders. This would have been the most appropriate protocol, but people’s perspective are different.

2. The need for indicators for the land exploration (V16-20)

Moses changed the names of the chosen leaders: Hosea, meaning salvation, was renamed Joshua, meaning God saves! Putting God’s name on “what saves” is complete salvation. There is a battle to win the land. And warfare absolutely requires strategy, beginning with a full understanding of the reality of the battlefield:

(1) how is the land? (2) how strong is the enemy army? (3) how many enemy soldiers are there? (4) is there good lodging there? (5) do they live in tent camps or do they have castles? (6) is the land fertile or barren? (7) is there a forest in the area?
The main purpose of these questions is to grasp the reality of the future to get for the industry, the so-called know yourself and know the enemy in order to win in every battle.

3. Evidence magnifies God’s promise (V21-24)

The land of Canaan was God’s promise to His people. God described it as a beautiful land flowing with milk and honey; this is just a “saying”, but how can it be proved? Unless someone sees it with their own eyes and provides physical evidence to prove it. So the spies brought back produce from the land, especially grape bunches that took two men to carry, and that’s a pretty strong description, isn’t it? It was an abundance beyond what was desired or thought, wasn’t it?

4. The eye of faith is indeed different (V25-33)

Here we see two perspectives that fall far apart: one is passive, negative, fearful, and withdrawn, excluding the existence of God’s promises. The second is to have God in one’s heart, but only see God’s works in one’s eyes, and then beg the leaders not to hurry up and go up and possess the land!

With what vision do you see God’s promises and leadership?

Conclusion: Ask the Lord for the eyes of faith!

We need to reconfirm God’s calling and promise, review the vision we have received with certainty, and then match it with the inquiry that is needed. Then it is time to receive the vision of faith from the Holy Spirit and experience God’s leading step by step.

Numbers 12 God’s chosen ones should be respected
GK611 Morning Devotion
02 April 2024
The Morning Devotion Speaker: Ps Daniel Kew

1. Slandering the leader because of jealousy (V1-3)

Miriam and Aaron slandered Moses. But the content of their slander against Moses seems to have nothing to do with Moses marrying an Ethiopian woman. Their real motivation for opposing Moses was their inner jealousy and dissatisfaction with Moses!

Miriam is the prophetess, Aaron is the high priest, and they are also the family of Moses – the three of them are siblings, Miriam is the eldest sister, Aaron is the second child, and Moses is the youngest. Yet, they are now slandering Moses! It can be seen that the prophets and high priests are just weak people. As long as the devil arouses jealousy, family relationships will be destroyed. This is a trick of the devil, and we must be careful!

Compared with the slander from his family, Moses did not defend himself. As the leader appointed by God, Moses was willing to wait for God to avenge his injustice. Moses here showed a testimony of meekness and humility! Meekness and humility are not weakness and fear, but a kind of self-control strength!

2. God is a servant and upholds justice (V4-9)

(1) Moses was completely loyal to God (V7)

God said that my servant Moses was different from others. He was loyal to the house of God. He passed on all the words that God told him word for word, and he completely carried out all the tasks assigned to him by God.

(2) God was speaking to Moses (V8)

God also showed that Moses was not only a prophet because God personally spoke to him and showed His glory to him, so Moses was God’s personally chosen leader and spokesperson. Therefore, God asked Aaron and Miriam, “Why then were you not afraid
to speak against My servant Moses?”

God heard someone slandering His chosen servant Moses, and He quickly upheld justice for Moses and stood up for him personally, showing how much He values and protects His chosen leader! Because destroying the leaders chosen by God means rebelling against God’s will and disrespecting God’s choice.

3. God hears His servant’s intercession (V10-16)

(1) God’s punishment came quickly (V10)

In addition to God’s severe verbal rebuke, He quickly punished Miriam with leprosy. God wants everyone to see the serious consequences of opposing God’s servants and turn to respect the people God has chosen!

(2) Moses intercedes for Miriam (V11-16)

In the entire incident, the only time Moses spoke was to ask God to heal Miriam, who opposed him. Moses prayed for them in response to Aaron’s request, further testifying to the meekness and humility of Moses’ character. God also answered Moses’ intercession, thus once again showing his recognition of Moses.

Praying for those who attack us is the greatest exercise in our service! As the Lord Jesus taught: Love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, (Matthew 5:44).

Conclusion:

We are redeemed and serve God because of God’s grace and election. Let us all have a grateful heart, respect each other, cooperate, and complete God’s plan! All glory to God!
