Introduction: Measure Protection against epidemic
1. Complaining is a Spiritual Contagion (v1-15)
Complaining is one of the killers of a Christian’s spiritual life. Not only will it not solve any problems, but from today’s verses in v1-15, it shows us that complaining is even like a contagious disease that spreads and causes more complaining. It will ultimately wreak even more havoc on ourselves and others.
Then we see that the virus of complaining goes on to spread and infect the people around them.v4 Now the mixed multitude who were among them yielded to intense craving and as a result the people of Israel joined in the complaining of these idle people. They had completely forgotten the days of suffering and slavery in Egypt. Forgetting God’s grace, they even loathed the manna that God had given them, labeling it as worthless.
When the people complained for the second time, each at the door of his tent, the spirit of complaint reached Moses. He complained that the burden of governing the people was too heavy, and even asked God to kill him so that he would not see his bitterness.
The spirit of complaint is contagious. It brings negative effects on people. It can lead to depression and bitterness, or it can cause God’s anger and bring trouble. Pray that God will help us to guard our mouths. When we complain, we are complaining against God’s leading. So not only does it prevent God’s blessings from coming to us, but it also provokes God’s anger.
2. Causes of people complaining (v1-15, 32)
(1) The road was not smooth
The Israelites didn’t take long to start complaining from Mount Sinai because the journey was getting harder and the road was rough. Complaining blinds us to God and we only see ourselves and our difficulties.
In fact, God often uses difficult and uneven roads to reveal the human flesh and give us the opportunity to exercise the old Adam in us to death. So let us seize the opportunity to break through and transform our lives.
(2) Covetousness and lack of contentment
v4 Covetousness is not the demand of necessity, but the excessive demands of one’s own greed.
Covetousness usually stems from a lack of gratitude and contentment with one’s current situation and life. They forget that they don’t have to plow or starve because God gave them manna to feed them.
Covetous people will find a million reasons to rationalise their choices, sometimes lying to their conscience. Obviously, the days in Egypt were difficult and hard, with daily hard labour and no food or clothing. But now they feel that life after the Exodus is not as good as the days of slavery in Egypt.
(3) Tired of eating manna (v7-9)
From the description of the Scriptures, manna is actually like pearls, and there are many ways to cook it. But it is easy for the human heart to get tired of new things. The people of Israel had been eating manna for almost a year at that time, so they were tired of it. When people get tired of God’s Word, problems arise in their lives. This is why the people’s ‘our whole being is dried up;’. Not because of a lack in the flesh, but a lack in the spirit.
3. God’s Response to Complaints (v16-35)
(1) Mercy to Moses by grace (v16-17, 21-30)
Moses also complained against God and even asked God to kill him immediately. God responded to Moses not only by not rebuking and punishing him, but by being gracious and compassionate to him. He gathered seventy men for him to be elders and rulers of the people and to share the burden of governing the people. Why was God kind to Moses?
First, God was sensitive to Moses’ feelings. God knew very well the disobedience and hardness of the people. Even God, who is rich in love and not easily angered, could be angered by them, let alone Moses. Moreover, Moses was a faithful follower of God, and though he grumbled, it was not for his own benefit. Nor did he want to forsake God and go back on his ways because of difficulties.
(2) Discipline the people with righteousness (v18-20)
God said to Israel that he would give them meat to eat, and that he would eat it until it came out of their nostrils, and until they were sick of it. It was because instead of being thankful for God’s salvation, they compared Him to Egypt, thought Egypt was good, and were sick of God.
God’s purpose in making His Words so plain is that His beloved children of Israel would confess their sins and repent in time. So that God’s judgment would not have to come upon them. Therefore, behind the righteous discipline was a strong sense of love and mercy.
(3) Unrepentant Death (v31-35)
In spite of God’s grace, the people not only did not deeply repent of God’s displeasure with them and their rejection of His reminder, but when they saw so many quails being blown by the wind, they became more and more greedy and in two days they caught 2,200 litres (ten homers), which is a month’s portion of quail to eat.
If a man repeatedly defies the grace of God, and is disobedient again and again, the judgment of righteousness will come.

Numbers 10 Arise,Advance and receive God’s grace
GK611 Morning Devotion
27 March 2024
The Morning Devotion Speaker: Rev David Tan
Introduction:Life’s road of no return —-; but we are moving toward God’s Promised Land!
1. The trumpet prepares the congregation to rise up and go (V1-10)
The trumpet is God’s musical instrument and weapon; the blowing of the trumpet serves the following types of actions:
(1) Generally blowing a double trumpets to summon the whole congregation (V3)
(2) A single silver trumpet is blown to summon only the leaders (V4)
(3) The loud blowing of the trumpet was to raise the east side of the camp (V5)
(4) Blow the trumpet again to call the southern camps to action (V6)
(5) The trumpet was also blown loudly in times of war (V9)
(6) Blow the trumpet at festivals (V10)
Trumpets and trumpets are God’s instruments (Zech. 9:14), the sound of rejoicing, and weapons of war, especially by the children of the priests: the trumpet is used as a sign of assembling, of starting, of war, and of rejoicing!
2. Marching in formation (V11-28)
(1) God’s cloud leads the way (V11-13)
“The cloud was taken up from above the tabernacle of the Testimony.”? What kind of scene is this? Have you ever seen a scene created by a sunset, an evening sun, a rainbow of colors, and a thick cloud? It is a symbol of God’s glorious presence. And this cloud is obviously not the kind that is far away in the sky, but right over the Tabernacle in the near distance. The so-called cloud closing up, as you can imagine, was rising quickly into the sky, getting smaller and smaller, and soon it was gone. This was God’s obvious instruction to get up and move on the road.
(2) The praise tabernacle goes first (V14-17)
According to what has already been said in chapter 2, Judah, with [praise] as its banner, is the first to rise. The tabernacle of the most holy glory was to be dismantled, carried and lifted up; and one can imagine what a glorious and honourable service this procession, headed by praise and singing, was doing. Here we are reminded of the law of the advance of God’s army, which begins with songs of praise, both in faith and thanksgiving first, and in allowing God to lead the way will certainly be blessed.
(3) Carrying the holy things forward (V18-21)
The army of the southern camp followed, but the Ark of the Covenant and other holy things were carried by the sons of Levi. These were holy things, and they were carried by the Levites, who were set apart. The Levites operated the holy things of God’s presence, and all were to follow in order.
For New Testament Christians, it seems like we can do anything. In fact, if you are in a large-scale organisation, it is inevitable that each one will do his or her own special duty. For example, wedding and funeral liturgy, communion, baptism, laying on of hands, etc., must first be performed by the senior priesthood. However, in small group churches, the believers may do all these services.
(4) Following closely and moving ahead together (V22-28)
With the Ark of the covenant in the middle, and the other processions in the west and north following closely behind, this creates a God-centered procession. If life’s family, career, and business all have God in the centre, the outlook that life presents is bound to be glorious.
3. Going to the promise and receiving good things (V29-33)
God is going to give a wonderful Promised Land, and Moses’ brother-in-law, who was related to him, was certainly no exception. How could the Promised Land not be shared with those around him when there were benefits prepared by God? But is man willing to be invited to follow God’s law? It is man’s choice!
Conclusion: The journey of grace with God (V34-36)
The Ark of the Covenant had pillar of cloud as shading, walked with the enemies scattered, and the Ark of the Covenant stopped and God is with them.
It turns out that every step in life can be guided by God, can this not be blessed?

23/03/2024

Numbers 9 Remember God’s Grace and Follow God’s Leading
GK611 Morning Devotion
26 March 2024
The Morning Devotion Speaker: Ps Daniel Kew
1. Observe the Passover to commemorate God’s salvation (V1-14)
(1) Follow Everything that God commanded (V1-5)
Passover is a festival celebrating God’s grace in rescuing His people from Egyptian and from slavery.
The Israelites had experienced God’s salvation, so they all willingly and fully obeyed God’s instructions to keep the Passover. Because they have personally experienced God’s great favour! They must remember God’s love and salvation shown to them!
We must keep God’s grace in mind and not gradually lose our “first love for God” because of our busy schedule as time goes by. We will participate less in worship service, become distracted from listening to sermons, and become lazy in Bible reading…. We need to constantly count God’s grace and bring ourselves back to our “first love”!
(2) For whoever is willing, there is grace (V6-14)
It can be seen from the scriptures that the Israelites were eager to keep the Passover and even those who had come into contact with dead bodies proposed to keep the Passover. God responded by allowing two special circumstances for people to celebrate Passover a month later: when a person became unclean because of a dead body, and when a person travelled. This shows that God’s grace always opens a way out for us, leaves an opportunity for redress, and gives people a second chance!
God also accepts Gentiles who are willing to participate in the Passover, as long as they follow the laws and regulations of the Passover.
This means that God’s salvation is available to everyone, and as long as they are willing to accept salvation, they can be accepted, but the prerequisite is to obey God’s Words.
2. The clouds are a reminder to follow God’s guidance (V15-23)
The cloud is a sign, a sign of God’s presence and a sign of God’s guidance. This passage also shows that God’s guidance is not an abstract concept but a visible reality.
What is God’s cloud today? The Word of God in the Bible is is a lamp to my feet
and a light to my path; the Holy Spirit is our comforter and the guide of the soul, to guide us to the glory of God! Therefore, if we want to enter the abundant promises of God, we must understand God’s Words and be willing to accept God’s guidance, so that we will not go astray. People will lead others astray, and we will also go our way, but God will keep us on the right path. Lord Jesus said: I am the way, the truth, and the life; no one can come to the Father except through me. We must be confident that God’s guidance will lead us to His promises! This is a lesson of faith, we just need to follow Him!
Conclusion:
Today we commemorate the Lord’s salvation with the Holy Communion; however, we must also constantly count the Lord’s grace in our daily lives and obey the reminders of the Holy Spirit so that we can closely follow God’s leading! Only then can we enter into God’s promises!

Numbers Chapter 8: Building a Life to Serve God
GK611 Morning Devotion
22/3/2024
The Morning Devotion Speaker: IP Asher Chang
1. Light up the lamp and shine (V1-4)
Here God specifically told Moses to tell Aaron how to place the seven lamps. The seven-lamp lampstand refers to the golden lampstand, which was made according to the pattern instructed by God. Lighting a lamp is very important. The original text of “light” means to go up, meet, and visit. Whenever we light a lamp, it is like we come before God to receive His spiritual food. So, attending Morning Devotion to light the lamp, which is to receive the Word of God through messages, worship, and pursuit in the morning.
The golden lampstand represents the Tree of Life, which gives life. A lit lamp has a light, and this light is also life, which can make darkness recede. The Tree of Life is to be lighted, and the lamp is to shine forward. When we shine light, we represent the Tree of Life and the church. The church must shine today, allowing the world to see light, see the truth, and escape from darkness.
2. Life of service (V5-22)
(1) Being chosen (V6, 14, 16-19)
The Levites were specially chosen by God, and they were assigned special and unique tasks. The Levites were chosen to take the place of Israel’s firstborn, to cleanse and to offer burnt offerings and sin offerings. Today we can serve God because God has chosen us out of all people. We are all specially chosen by God.
(2) Be cleansed (V7-8, 12, 15, 21)
The service of the Levites is particularly valued by God, and they serve as if they dedicated their lives. Everything offered to God must not only be cleansed but must also be without blemishes. Through the cleansing ceremony, the Levites put off the old man and their past behaviour and put on the new man, becoming a new creation.
We can serve God because we believe in the Lord Jesus Christ. Believing that He died for our sins cleanses us. Jesus becomes our sin offering and makes us new creatures.
(3) Offered up (V11, 15, 20-22)
The Levites’ wave offerings for Israel meant that they offered their bodies as living sacrifices, which were first presented to God and then given to the priests by God to serve as their assistants. They serve God full-time and no longer live for themselves, but live in the vitality of death and resurrection, live in God’s will, and live only to worship and serve God.
3. Offer up for life (V23-26)
The Levites may have started serving God at the age of twenty-five, stopped working and retired when they were fifty. So, does retirement mean after the age of fifty? To retire means to stop what they are doing and return to their original position, hence this is not retirement but step down. They were to serve with their brethren, keeping their command to guard the Tabernacle, to worship and pray there, and to keep the presence of God. This is our lifelong service, our life as priests and Levites. No matter what position we are in, we can all do our part and offer up together for God.
Conclusion:
Let us be the life that lights up the lamp every day, shining forward, rising to serve, and dedicating and offering up our lives to the Lord.

Numbers Chapter 6: Offering a sacrifice pleasing to God
GK611 Morning Devotion
21/3/2024
The Morning Devotion Speaker: Ps Stella Ling
Introduction:
From the offering of gifts by the Israelites, we can learn how to offer sacrifices that are pleasing to God!
1. Set apart and sanctify to receive God’s presence (v1-9)
The tabernacle and the altar and vessels within it needed to be set apart and sanctify, for the presence of the Lord will come in the tabernacle. The leaders of the 12 tribes of Israel took it upon themselves to set apart the ox-carts to God, also in the hope of having God’s presence on the journey as well, for they knew full well that God’s presence was their certainty of entering Canaan. In addition, they also saw the need of the tabernacle, so they willingly and happily took the initiative to offer the ox cart.
2. God valued every offering (v10-83)
Each tribe, regardless of their numbers, had exactly the same offerings and sacrifices presented by their leaders, showing that they all had the same heart before God. Although, the leaders of each tribe offered the same sacrifices, they were not repetition to God. For each leader, each tribe that each leader represented, and even each Israelite was extremely valuable in God’s sight.
3. God’s response to the offerings of the people (v84-89)
After the leaders had made their offerings and entered into the reality of giving, so that God’s heart was satisfied, it led to a deeper communion between God and the people: and God Himself came down in the tabernacle, and spoke to Moses from the mercy seat, as He had promised. Therefore, we need to understand that when we offer willingly, God will speak to us, He will be with us, and He will answer our prayers.
Conclusion: God wants to be with us
The Israelite ritual of dedicating the tabernacle symbolised the people’s recognition of God’s presence with them as Israel’s King. To this day, God still desires to be with His children.
What is our gift to God today? Know that God uses and responds to every offering we make. The most important thing is that every offering, as long as it is made with our hearts, no matter how big or small, will be remembered by God.

Numbers Chapter 6: Be a person who is set apart
GK611 Morning Devotion
20/3/2024
The Morning Devotion Speaker: Rev David Tan
Introduction:
Sunday shared on second of the Ten Commandments: to love the Lord with all of one’s life! As the truth of today’s word [the Nazirite], become a person set apart and holy.
1. Set apart from worldly pleasures (V1-4)
The Nazirite’s volunteerism was free, and it was a good example for those who had a heart to learn spiritual disciplines. Demonstrate that you want to separate yourself from the worldly life so that you can have a deeper spiritual experience.
Stay away from wine and do not eat grapes – Eating and drinking such foods represents a form of pleasure, and to be a Nazirite is to show a willingness to be for the Lord and not for the pleasures of the flesh. This is a manifestation of the godliness of the spiritual life; seeing a higher longing than the material pleasures of the flesh.
2. Set apart from self-glory (V5)
The purpose of a haircut is to refurbish one’s image, an outward manifestation of a glorious image; without shaving one’s head one gradually develops an unkempt, lost appearance of one’s usual lustrous appearance. Comparatively speaking, it is like bearing humiliation for the Lord, putting down one’s face, and stooping to humility. It is like being set apart from the glory of self and caring for God alone instead of yourself. When it is for the Lord, how much do you think you are giving?
3. Set apart from natural affections (V6-7)
The separated and holy Nazirite was not to be near a dead body, for God regards a corpse without life and soul as unclean. It turns out that this concept is the same for family members; it is like living a holy life and overcoming emotional and relational complexes. Is it possible to only concern of the things of God? As the Lord Jesus said, “Did you not know that I must be about My Father’s business?”
4. Set apart from Spiritual Death (V8-12)
If anyone meets unawares next to him and suddenly someone dies and pollutes his head, he is to shave his head on the seventh day, and not to have a part in the defilement. It means to be set apart in spiritual death. After all, we are living beings with the Holy Spirit. We are meant to live a different life. Everything in the world is “dead”, but those who are in God have eternal life. Even more so for Christians, there is the promise of resurrection, and therefore set apart from the world that will die.
5. Return to normality from the sacrifice of thanksgiving (V13-21)
The Nazirite mind is spontaneous and therefore the duration is specific rather than permanent. The main point is that when the appointed time with God had come, there was a sacrifice and thanksgiving to be offered, and a return to the normality of the past life of faith in the same active way of commitment. The earlier spiritual experience of being a Nazirite was valuable training and experience.
Conclusion: Finally receiving the high priest’s blessing (V22-27)
We are to experience the life of a set apart and holy Nazirite and receive the blessing of the High Priest!
A more complete and blessed life: Blessed, protected, illuminated, and received grace, blessed with the peace of complete Shalom!

Numbers Chapter 5: Becoming a Holy Vessel
GK611 Morning Devotion
19/3/2024
The Morning Devotion Speaker: Ps. Daniel Kew
Introduction:
The numbers of the LORD’s army had been counted, the order of setting up camp and starting out had been arranged, and God was now going to do the work of cleansing the camp. Because the Holy One dwells in the camp, the people of Israel could not defile the camp, and God wanted all His people to be vessels of holiness!
1. Dealing with physical uncleanness (V1-4)
And the LORD made known that he would cause three kinds of people to dwell outside the camp, the lepers, the lepers, and those who were unclean because of dead bodies. For these three types of unclean people were likely to carry contagious germs that would cause a major infection in the camp, so as not to defile their camp. It was necessary to go out of the camp and isolate them.
God wants us to understand that physical sickness and uncleanness does not only concern you, but also others; because this camp is ‘their camp’, ‘everyone’s camp’, and if it is defiled, it will bring about the loss of the whole camp, not only infecting it with disease, but also making it impossible for God to live and dwell with everyone. Not only is it contagious, but it also makes it impossible for God to live with everyone, because God is a holy God!
2. Dealing with the sin of offending others (V5-10)
To sin against people is to sin against God. Therefore, God requires that if there is a wrongdoer, he must confess his sin and pay the full amount of the wrongdoer’s debt, plus an additional one-fifth of the debt.
A ‘wrongdoing’ is a failure to treat someone fairly, including: deceit, theft, oppression and debt.
God’s intention is that His people should not fall short of each other, because what appears to be a problem with people is actually a problem with God, a ‘unfaithfulness against the Lord’.
3. Dealing with jealousy in marriage (V11-31)
The original meaning of ‘jealousy’ is resentment due to jealousy. ‘Jealousy’ prevents the husband and wife from being one and sharing the same bed. Therefore it was to be dealt with and handled in a public ceremony; it was to be sent to the priest and stood before the LORD to be dealt with.
In this day and age, when a husband or wife has such a doubt or hatred in their heart, they need to have the wisdom to find the right ‘priest’ to counsel them, to open up about their hidden sins; and to come before God together to seek His illumination. Although there are no rituals of bitter water and curses today, we can confess our sins and repent to God together. Whether it is the one who treats his or her spouse poorly or the one who is jealous of his or her spouse with suspicion, he or she can come to God and confess his or her faults, so as to mend the marital relationship.
Conclusion:
One person’s physical health, interpersonal problems, and marital relationships affect the whole group. For the church to move forward, it requires every Christian to deal with the unclean things in their lives. The God who calls us is holy, and we all need to rely on God to turn from sinful things and become holy vessels fit to be used by God!
