04/03/2024

Book of James 5

James Chapter 5: “The Mouth that Delights God”
GK611 Morning Devotion
01/03/2024
The Morning Devotion Speaker: Co-worker Asher Chang

1. A mouth that blesses people and not greedy

(1) A heart that is willing to bless (V1-3)

Here James once again reminds us that a wealthy person is a rich person. In fact, there is nothing wrong with having money. Having money can be a blessing from God, a good thing, and a testimony that glorifies God. The mention here that property is broken, clothes are bitten by insects, and gold and silver are rusty refers to the fact that the wealthy people at that time just kept accumulating money. This is the test and temptation of the rich.

If the property is not used for a long time, it will break down, or if it is not used for a long time, it will become useless. Just like if a person who has been saved by grace does not stand up to serve God and bear witness to God, he will become a useless person who “use up the ground.”

Our money belongs to God. Through tithes, charitable offerings, benevolent offerings, and offerings during worship, we can also become vessels of blessing.

(2) Don’t treat those you owe wrongly (V4)

At that time, many hired workers who harvested crops depended on the day’s wages. Failure to pay wages meant that they have nothing to eat when they stopped working, causing them to starve immediately. God will avenge those who have been wronged. Here we are reminded that if we are bosses, we must pay wages on time and not delay, lest we offend God.

(3) Don’t be greedy for others (V5-6)

The wealth God has given us is not meant for us to squander without restraint, nor is it meant to be idle and decay. It is meant to allow us to rely on the wisdom God has given us, manage our finances well, and become a channel to share God’s blessings. Those who oppress others with money will eventually suffer God’s judgment.

2. Believe in Him and have a mouth that does not complain (V7-11)

We must watch our mouths and not speak words of complaint or bitterness. Under any pressure, do not rush to seek justice for yourself in your way. We believe that God is a righteous God, and we also believe in Job’s experience. With God, we don’t need to be afraid. God is a righteous God, He will help us, and God will avenge us.

3. Have a sincere and loving mouth

(1) Sincere words (V12)

He who makes others believe does not need to swear at all. Every word we speak will face judgment in the future. We need to be honest when we speak. We say yes when we do, and we say no when we don’t. We don’t need to swear to prove what we say. In the face of all challenges, difficulties, and persecutions, we can be sincere to others, speak honest words, and become reliable people.

(2) Words of faith (V13-18)

If there is a person who is suffering, he should pray, that is, continue to pray until God takes action; if there is a person who is happy, he should sing praises! This is a praise to God and a more powerful prayer. When facing suffering, let us continue to express gratitude and praise. When we are in trouble or persecution, we often feel unhappy, complain, and become sick. If a person is sick, he can ask the church pastors and cell leaders to anoint him with oil and pray in the Lord, because they are the spiritual leaders of the church.

(3) Words of love (V19-20)

Those who have lost the faith refer to brothers who are weak and fall in trials. We should not only care about our own affairs, but also use words of love to help the brothers and sisters around us to repent and receive salvation.

Conclusion:

The entire book of James tells us what to do in times of suffering, especially to bridle our tongues. Our mouths can speak words of encouragement, prayer for each other, words of sincerity, faith, and love.

James 4 Becoming God-Fearing Children
GK611 Morning Devotion
29 Feb 2024
The Morning Devotion Speaker: Ps Stella Ling

Introduction:

Since God is the one who is in authority, we as His children should fear Him.

1. Be humble and not be enmity with God (v1-6)

(1) Do not indulge in selfish desires (v1-3)

Selfish desires are the result of man’s carnality, which produces war within man and makes him a double-minded person. Therefore, our selfish desires lead to covetousness, and we do whatever it takes to get what we want, so that we envy and kill and fight and have war, and we don’t get what we want. Jesus promised, “Ask, and it will be given to you” (Lk. 11:9), as long as we ask according to the kingdom and will of God. Therefore, whatever we ask for must be in accordance with God’s will, otherwise we will not receive anything.

(2) Do not be friends with the world (v4-6)

To be “friends with the world” means to love the world and to be in league with the things of the world. The various selfish desires of life can easily lead to pride, envy, division, lack of inner peace, and even corruption of others. Therefore, we cannot be friends of the world and betray God at the same time

2. Resist the devil and draw near to God (v7-10)

Grace is only given to those who humbly seek God, therefore we are to obey God. We are also to resist the devil’s deception and intimidation. When we resist the devil, we are promised that the devil will leave us and flee. We have to humble ourselves before the Lord in order to draw near to God and also to stop being enemies of God. And, when we confess our desperate, defeated condition before God, He will raise us up to Him so that we can receive “more grace” and so that we can overcome temptation.

3. Not criticising and judging one another (v11-12)

With regard to what a person does that is right or wrong, in fact the Law has already revealed whether he has a problem or not, and there is no need for us to emphasise it again. However, when we repeatedly emphasise the problems of a particular person, it is as if the Law is not effective enough and we need to speak up for the Law. Therefore, when we criticise a brother, we are actually criticising the Law. However, we know that there is only one who established the law and judges people, and that is God. Therefore, if we criticise our brother, we are actually criticising God!

Therefore, a person who fears God will not dare to “speaks evil of a brother and judges his brother“.

4. Life is in God’s hands (v13-17)

In fact, it is good to set goals, but if we never include God in our plans, then our plans will end up disappointing us. Because the future is in God’s hands. Even though we have a lot of good plans in life, we can’t control the accidents that may happen at any time. Life is in God’s hands, so do not boast wildly, for such behaviour is evil in God’s eyes. Moreover, human life is short and fragile.

Conclusion: Everything is in God’s hands

Brothers and sisters, if we want to be God-fearing children, we have to come close to God often and serve His will. We also ask God to help us defend ourselves against selfish desires so that we do not fall into fights and battles; to guard our mouths so that we do not criticise and judge.

Ultimately, we need to understand that human life is not in our own hands. Everything is in God’s hands, and all one has to do is come humbly before Him and seek His face. For everything depends on God!

Book of James 3

James 3 Words and Wisdom
GK611 Morning Devotion
28 Feb 2024
The Morning Devotion Speaker: Rev David Tan

Introduction: A “perfect” wife …!

1.Words influences Life together (3:1-4)

3:1 My brethren, let not many of you become teachers, knowing that we shall receive a stricter judgment.
Don’t rush to be teachers. Teachers are required to speak with their mouths, but are the words spoken completely inerrant? It turns out that the words of our mouth will face judgment, so be doubly careful.

(1) The whole person is under the control of the word without fault (V2)

A word well spoken is like apples of gold falling into a net of silver; it is the icing on the cake, perfect. If the words can be spoken well in sincerity, and not in a flowery way with the mouth. Words without fault are perfect people, and often such people can live a better life as well. The so-called trouble comes out of the mouth is the result of not saying the words appropriately.

(2) A horse’s mouth masticatory cycle to mobilise the whole body (V3)

A horse is much more powerful than a man, so how can a man ride a horse? A chewing ring placed in the horse’s mouth can move a tall and big horse. The fear of one thing to rule another is very important to understand what is the [key point] that can take charge or sway things.

(3) A small rudder on a ship turns a large ship (V4)

How do you turn a ship that can carry thousands of people? It turns out that it is also controlled by a small rudder. It is just like what direction does a church want to go? In addition to God’s leading, what moves the heart of the church pastor is often the key navigator of the whole church.

Summary: The above examples are meant to convey the idea that the key to a person’s behaviour is the words that come out of his mouth. The key lies in the words that come out of one’s mouth! But the words that come out of the mouth are the thoughts of the heart. So I am afraid that in order to speak well, we must first deal with the problem of life.

2. A Poisonous Tongue Corrupts Life (3:5-12)

(1) Why is the tongue difficult to subdue? (V5-8)

It turns out that words on the tongue are hard to be subdued. According to the nature of a sinner, the sinfulness in a person can easily be spread by evil through words. It turns out to be much easier to tame all kinds of animals than it is to tame people. A poisonous tongue obviously corrupts a person’s life.

(2) The tongue reveals the nature of man! (V9-12)

What is in man? The opening of the mouth reveals it. As the Lord Jesus said, “What kind of tree brings forth what kind of fruit?” If we belong to the Lord on the inside and have the Holy Spirit on the outside and inside, how can we still give out words of bitterness and cursing? This is obviously a cancerous virus in our hearts, and we need to keep taking the “antibiotic” of thanksgiving and praise, so that our mouths will continue to give out thanksgiving and praise.

3. Receiving Wisdom from Above (3:13-18)

(1) True wisdom is gentle and beautiful (V13)

We are to be wise, that is, insightful and capable of good understanding. Wisdom’s gentleness is a very classic description; and what a good deed it is in the life of a Christian! The overall expression of the person described in these words is one who is soft-spoken and gives the impression of being comfortable and decent. And the result is goodness and edification. How can we be this wise? Go back to the faith that seeks wisdom as described in verses 5-6 of chapter one.

(2) False wisdom reveals negativity (V14-16)

On the contrary, if it is not the gentleness of wisdom, but bitterness, envy, strife, which brings bloodshed and disturbance, even if it seems to be wise, yet this wisdom is from the devil. The Scripture is indeed very plain, seeing that it is very important for emotions to be controlled by the moderation of the Holy Spirit.

(3) God-Given Wisdom Shows Good Results (V17-18)

Finally, what is the “potency” of wisdom from God? Cleanliness without pollution, peace instead of strife, meekness instead of viciousness, compassion instead of ruthlessness, fruitfulness instead of wrongdoing, etc. In short, the result is harmony. All in all, the result is harmony, bringing about a peaceful end.

Conclusion: Speak well and be good!

Are we such good people who speak wisely?
Having been converted and baptised does not guarantee that you are such a person! Rather, you have to give these truth vitamins A-Z slowly, and the life that follows will never be the same again.

Book of James 2

James 2 The Tree of Life’s Way of Treating People and Doing Things
GK611 Morning Devotion
27 Feb 2024
The Morning Devotion Speaker: Ps Daniel Kew

1. The Tree of Life’s Way of Treating People (V1-13)

(1) Don’t treat people favourably based on their appearance (V1-7)

James points to a common problem in the early church: partiality based on appearance. ‘Treating people by their appearance’ is the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil! This is not God’s perspective! James reminds the believers in the church that treating people based on their social status and wealth is contrary to the thoughts and teachings of Jesus! Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart. (1 Samuel 16:7)

As modern believers, we can also fall into the trap of favouritism, favouring others unduly based on external factors such as wealth, status, appearance, or race. James’ admonition invites us to examine our mindsets and ensure that our faith is not tainted by these prejudices.

(2) Observe the royal law and love your neighbour as yourself (V8-13)

Love your neighbour as yourself (Leviticus 19:18) is called the royal law. Love God with all your heart and soul and love your neighbour as yourself. This is the summary of all the laws and prophets. Because “Love does no harm to a neighbour; therefore love is the fulfilment of the law”(Romans 13:10). Being partial to others violates the royal law of loving your neighbour as yourself. If you violate any part of the law, you will become a complete violator of the law.

Let us make up our minds: to obey the royal law – to love our neighbour as ourselves! Reveal the love and mercy of the Tree of Life!

2. The Tree of Life’s Way of Doing Things (V14-26)

(1) Walk by combining faith and works (V14-20)

James asked a rhetorical question in V14: What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can faith save him? James used this rhetorical question to show that faith without works is useless and cannot save people. His argument is not that faith is unimportant. On the contrary, he emphasised that the essence of true faith is behaviour! For example: Words of mercy without corresponding actions do nothing to help those who need relief from their suffering. It is completely unable to meet the needs of people who are hungry and cold.

The Christian’s way of doing things is to transform faith into real actions of love! Live out our faith through acts of mercy and love for others.

(2) Examples of great men of faith (V21-26)

James cited two examples of great men of faith in the Bible: Abraham and Rahab, to emphasise that faith and behaviour should go hand in hand with the actions of God’s people.

For us, these examples remind us that in everything we do, our faith should lead to courageous action. Just as the faith of Abraham and Rahab led them to courageous acts of obedience, our faith should inspire us to act in ways that demonstrate our faith in Christ!

Conclusion:

The life of the Tree of Life is full of vitality and positive confidence! It affects our actions, and our relationships, and permeates every aspect of our lives. Become an impactful life witness through our actions combined with faith! Spread the love of Christ to the people around you!

Book of James 1

James Chapter 1: Live the days with God!
GK611 Morning Devotion
23/2/2024
The Morning Devotion Speaker: Co-worker Asher Chang

Introduction: Greetings from James V1

1. View trials as beneficial

(1) Accept trials with joy (V2-4)

The trials in life are impossible to predict and control. James teaches believers who fall into various trials not only to rejoice but to have great joy. If we continue to think negatively and only look at difficulties, trials will make us more painful.

Know that we can rejoice because we know that trials are a test of our faith. When our faith is tested, it will produce perseverance, and in perseverance it will bring success, allowing us to have a perfect life without any shortcomings.

(2) Face trials with unceasing prayer (V5-8)

Both faith and wisdom can help us see things in a positive light and remain joyful even in hardship. If we lack faith and wisdom, we can ask God for help.

(3) Go with the wind and be still with whatever happens (V9-11)

Whether we are humble or promoted, poor or rich, it is not the most important, because everything, like flowers and grass, will eventually wither, and money is not our guarantee. All this is temporary, don’t worry about it. Only God is eternal, and by living in God’s wisdom, we can be filled with joy.

2. Overcome temptation and gain reward

(1) Blessed are those who endure temptation (V12)
The word “temptation” in verse 12, “Blessed is the man who endures temptation,” and the word “trial” in verse 2, “various trials,” are the same word, and the original translation is “difficulty.” Earlier it was said that we should be happy when we endure trials; here it is said that those who endure trials are blessed.

When facing difficulties, God may not directly remove them because He allows them to become our trials. If we see trials and tribulations as tempering our lives and rely on the Lord to endure them, I believe this will make us perfect and gain the crown of life. Therefore

(2) Temptation does not come from God (V13-16)
The scripture “Let no one say when he is tempted, I am tempted by God…” The word “temptation” here means “testing.” God does not tempt people, but people are tempted by their own sinful desires.

(3) Bear good fruit and overcome temptation (V17-18)
There are many trials so that we can learn the way of Jesus to face them, grow from them, be able to endure the joy, gain the crown of life, and show that we are the fruit of God.

3. Hear the word and do it (V19-27)

When faced with immediate difficulties, we can easily lose patience and even become emotional. But as people who want to live the days of God, we must show the perfection of God in our words and deeds, and no longer satisfy ourselves with the ways of the world. Learn to lbe swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath. By relying on God, we can maintain a happy and relaxed mood. Because everything will pass. We must read more of God’s Words, practice God’s ways, and receive the help He gives us.

Conclusion:Live a life with God,count all things loss and suffering as a trivial matter. Relax, for God is the one in control.

Book of Titus 3

Titus 3 The duty of a Christian
GK611 Morning Devotion
22 Feb 2024
The Morning Devotion Speaker: Ps Deborah Tan

Introduction: Do good works

1. Good Citizen in Submission to Authority (v1-2)

The apostle Paul wanted Titus to remind the believers in the church that in the face of the infamous tyrant Nero, they were still to be good citizens in submission to authority. For living a life of appropriateness and gentleness to the outside world is the Christian’s part in drawing those around him to hunger for the truth and to be drawn to faith in the Lord. More importantly, it is God’s will to submit to those in authority, for all authority is of God. Submitting to the system of authority established by God is submitting to God.

2. Life testimony beyond the world (v3-8)

In addition to doing their duty as good citizens, Christians are to live out in the circle of unbelievers or in the presence of the world:

(1) A life of repentance and renewal (v3-7)

The Apostle Paul wanted Titus to remind the believers that although the Cretans were of a low moral standard, we are in fact no different than they would have been had it not been for the goodness of God who saved us from the despairing light of the past. So do not despise unsaved sinners. By the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, living beyond the worldly life attracts people to become heirs of God.

(2) Be intent on doing good works (v8)

Christians are to be intent on doing serious works. That is, to evangelise and be the channel of God’s salvation. They should also be intentional in building disciples and teams to pass on the faith from generation to generation.

3. Far from vain and unprofitable wickedness (v9-11)

The churches of the day were full of heretical false teachers exalting personal genealogies by genealogy. Misinterpretation and misapplication of the Old Testament Law also caused contention. Paul wanted Titus to remind preachers, leaders and believers not only to stay away from these evils, which are not the least bit constructive spiritually, but also to do their part in familiarizing themselves with the Scriptures, and in earnestly understanding the truth, so that we may not be easily misled. Furthermore, we should not waste time and energy on those who are stubborn and unrepentant, trying to correct and change them.

4. The Fruit of Life (v12-15)

(1) Love one another and walk together (v12-13)

Members and co-workers of the Lord of different races, specialties, ministries, and harvest fields, in their ministries, are living out their complementary roles to each other, matching up with each other, and walking together with one heart, which is the good fruit of life that Christians should live out. We should also be willing to financially support the needy members and missionary teams.

(2) Don’t be too lazy to work hard (v14-15)

The phrase ‘learning a proper career’ means that Christians should work hard and not be lazy, and not become parasites in society. It does not mean that we should wait until we retire to serve God, and we should not think that because we are busy with our work, we do not have time to participate in any ministry.

Conclusion: Do your part and don’t live your life in vain!

Let us try our best to do our part, be zealous for good, and not waste this life. Let our faith glorify God and benefit others through action.
