Titus 2 Be a leader who loves the Lord
GK611 Morning Devotion
21 Feb 2024
The Morning Devotion Speaker: Rev David Tan

Introduction: In fact, everyone can “take up a lot”…!

1. Preach about the right path (2:1-6)

(1) Introduce the right path with the truth (V1)

According to the English Expanded Version translation, “As for you, you are to teach what is in accordance with pure doctrine (which produces men and women of good character who live in such a way that they become true Christians).”
You can be another “Titus” and bring out more true Christians by teaching by example.

(2) Remind elders of what they say and do (V2-3)

We have elders in our lives. We need to honour them and help them grow, mature and become a complete human beings. We often say that it is hard for the elderly to change, and it is especially hard for those who are younger to change their elders! This is not true, but as long as we are wise and utilise the truth, all people can be changed.

(3) A Good Example of Husband and Motherhood (V4-5)

There is no more honorable role for a woman than to be a good wife and mother, a wise and talented woman. Again, this cannot be done without obedience to the truth and living out the faith. Sisters are to be such witnesses, and brothers are to help their sisters to be such person.

(4) Young people should have self-control (V6)

When it comes to the young people, this represents the new generation that is young and vigorous. They have excessive learning and knowledge, but lack life experience and ways of getting along. Therefore, among the many truths, if there is anything that can be the most witnessing and influential, it is to have self-control, to guard one’s heart, to be gentle and not impulsive. The people will be impressed when they look at this young man and think he is sensible.

2. To Live the Truth (2:7-12)

(1) A perfect person who does the truth (V7-8)

It was said earlier to teach others to live the truth, yet it is more important to live the example of a good testimony yourself. Good and quick repentance precedes the attainment of blamelessness. There is no greater than to be a ‘good person’ to those around you.

(2) Live out a testimony of obedience and faithfulness (V9-10)

If you are a relative young person or a late bloomer or junior, make every effort to be a good junior or subordinate. Be a faithful witness and live a life of honour so that you may glorify God and benefit others.

(3) Live a life of sanctification and holiness (V11-12)

Christians are supposed to be distinct and different from the world. Because we have the truth, which the world does not have, and the Holy Spirit, which the world does not have, to help us. If you are willing to obey the truth and live a life that honours God, life will certainly be different.

3. Hope for the coming of the Lord (2:13-15)

To live a victorious and honourable life, there must be a lot of patience, letting go, sacrifices, and paying the price. Since we all live our lives in the world, why should Christians be condemned to accommodate others and humble themselves to the point of even suffering? Because there is the glorious hope of the Lord’s return! The Lord’s reward at that time will be our eternal verdict, our eternal reward!

Conclusion: We are all witnesses of Christ!

Christians are Christ’s spokesmen and witnesses, and the world needs us to be channels of blessing. You should not underestimate the mission of your existence! Because God has placed you in your family, workplace, and society, is it not because God wants to use us?

Titus 1 Qualities and Mission of Spiritual Leaders
GK611 Morning Devotion
20 Feb 2024
The Morning Devotion Speaker: Ps Daniel Kew

Introduction:

The Epistle to Titus is a letter written by the apostle Paul to his young co-worker Titus. The book of Titus not only mentions the requirements for church leaders, but also has very specific instructions for the believers it requires. The first chapter of Titus gives us a deep understanding of the character and mission of spiritual leadership.

1. The mission of the Apostle Paul (V1-4)

This letter was written to Titus, but it was also written to the believers on the island of Crete. Therefore, at the beginning of the letter, Paul told the local Christians that his credentials were God and explained his mission as God’s servant and apostle: to preach according to God’s command so that God’s people have faith and the truth, knowledge, and the hope of eternal life.

Paul is a good example that we should learn from. We should all regard ourselves as servants of God and messengers of the Lord, preaching the gospel and winning others to Christ!

2. The qualities of a godly leader (V5-9)

Paul’s purpose in leaving Titus in Crete was so that Titus could manage the affairs of the churches in Crete and appoint elders in each city. Paul lists the qualities of church elders here:

(1) Good husband and good father (V6)

Paul specifically emphasised that elders should have only one wife. In addition to having a marriage that is in line with God’s heart, elders must also lead their children to believe in the Lord and discipline their children so that they behave appropriately. An elder must first be a good husband and father!

(2) A blameless character (V7-8)

Paul’s character requirements for elders are to be “blameless”: not self-willed, not quick-tempered, not given to wine, not violent, not greedy for money, hospitable, a person of good and kind, dignified, fair, holy, and self-controlled.

(3) The responsibility of holding the truth (V9)

Godly leaders and pastors must fulfil the responsibility of adhering to the truth. First, they must adhere to God’s Words themselves, and then they can use God’s Words to exhort and convict those who contradict them.

In today’s world filled with voices and messages, we need to be rooted in sound doctrine, equipped with the ability to discern and stand for truth, and to guide others on the right path.

3. Severely rebuke false teachers (V10-16)

Paul emphasised the need for Titus to severely rebuke those who were contrary to sound doctrine. These false teachers misled the believers in Crete, led them astray, and ruined their families!

Paul’s command to rebuke is not punitive judgment, but corrective love. The purpose is not just to condemn, but to guide misguided people back to the correct belief. We should not think of corrective rebuke as a punishment, but as a way to grow.

Conclusion:

The church today, like the church in Crete, needs godly leaders who are committed to keeping everything in order and ensuring correct doctrine. This task is not just for pastors or church leaders, it is the mission for all Christians!

Psalm 89

19/02/2024

Psalm 27: “With God, there is a way”
GK611 Morning Devotion
16/2/2024
The Morning Devotion Speaker: Co-worker Asher Chang

Introduction:The psalmist David’s choice when faced with a difficult situation was to worship God.

1. With God, I am not afraid!

(1). He is the light (V1a)

(2). He is salvation (V1a)

(3). He is a refuge (V1b-6)

The psalmist David was in a situation where he was trying to avoid being pursued by his enemies, while at the same time he was praising God and calling out to God. When fleeing from enemies, he may often hide in the darkness of caves. Despite this, he still chose to believe that God was the only way out. The enemies around him were like wild beasts, trying to eat his flesh, but he still believed that God was his salvation. David firmly believed that when faced with difficulties, he did not rush to find a way out, but chose to come to the temple of God to seek God.

When we face challenges at work, at home, at school, or in ministry, it can feel very dark and there is no way out. But remember that the Lord is our light and our salvation, so there is no need to fear. When we can lay down ourselves, turn our eyes from difficulties to God, and only look to Him, seek Him, and get close to Him, God will make our hearts still, and He will give us peace.

2. With God, I am not alone!

(1). We can seek Him (V7-8)

(2). He will not abandon us (V9-10)

(3). He will guide us (V11-12)

David not only appealed to God with his voice, but he also responded to God’s instructions with his heart. David’s prayer was an intimate conversation with God with his heart, and he responded to God’s call with his heart. When our hearts truly turn to God, God will hear our cry.

Anyone who sincerely calls on God will not abandon him, and God will guide his path. What we need to pay attention to is that it is not that God has abandoned us, but that we may choose to leave God. Ask the Holy Spirit to enlighten us, so that we can lay down ourselves, come before God, and surrender to God wholeheartedly so that we can enter true relaxation.

3. With God, I can be at rest! (V13-14)

The last two verses are like David’s encouragement to himself. He is speaking to his heart. David continued to experience God’s grace and love throughout his life, and his faith continued to grow as a result. Even though he didn’t know what the way out was at that time, he still chose to wait for God’s timing with faith.

We have no way to choose what the future will be like, let alone change the future. But we can choose to trust His faithfulness, and that just as He helped David, He will also help us.

Conclusion:

Let God be our protection and trust Him wholeheartedly. No matter how difficult the road is, there will be a way out in His hands.

Psalm 26 Hope of walking in integrity and uprightness
GK611 Morning Devotion
15/2/2024
The Morning Devotion Speaker: Ps Stella Ling

Introduction:

When faced with false accusations and wrongful accusations from others, and in the midst of great inner pain and struggle, one can pray to God for redress of grievances, and receive great comfort and strength from Him!

1. Redress of grievances (V1-3)

David firmly believed that God would redress his grievances, and he relied firmly on the one true God. His trust was based on the knowledge of God, and he was convinced that the God he believed in was faithful. Therefore, when we are slandered and falsely accused, and our hearts are in pain and we are unable to defend ourselves, we come to God, cry out to Him, and rely on Him, believing that He will do justice for us, and that He will redress our grievances because of His faithful promises.

2. The Clear Evidence of Defense (V4-7)

David proves his integrity by the fact that he separates himself from sinners and identifies himself with the worshippers of God. He in no way identified with the evildoers and wicked. He did not sit with them or follow their schemes. He also offered thanksgiving and praise to the LORD God with a blameless conscience.

3. Protection in the sanctuary (V8-12)

The reason David turned his eyes to God and cried out earnestly in the midst of his distress was that he stood on level ground. That firm foundation is the faithfulness of the Lord God. In spite of the hardship, lack of understanding, and slander, he remained confident in praising God with joy in the house of God. Like David, we too should always come to God and praise Him with joy, knowing that He will care for us and deliver us.

Conclusion:

David’s life of walking in integrity and uprightness enabled him to look to God for justice with certainty and confidence in spite of his difficulties.

May we all act with uprightness so that we may have peace in Christ in all our troubles!

Psalm 25 Look upon the Lord
GK611 Morning Devotion

The Morning Devotion Speaker: Rev David Tan

1. Victory is about looking upon the Lord wholeheartedly (V1-5)

1 To You, O LORD, I lift up my soul.
2 O my God, I trust in You; let me not be ashamed; let not my enemies triumph over me.
3 Indeed, let no one who [a]waits on You be ashamed; let those be ashamed who deal treacherously without cause.
4 Show me Your ways, O LORD; teach me Your paths.
5 Lead me in Your truth and teach me, for You are the God of my salvation; on You I wait all the day.

2. Rely on the Lord’s mercy and compassion as the vitamin (V6-10)

6 Remember, O LORD, Your tender mercies and Your lovingkindnesses, for they are from of old.
7 Do not remember the sins of my youth, nor my transgressions; according to Your mercy remember me, for Your goodness’ sake, O LORD.
8 Good and upright is the LORD; therefore He teaches sinners in the way.
9 The humble He guides in justice, and the humble He teaches His way.
10 All the paths of the LORD are mercy and truth, to such as keep His covenant and His testimonies.

3. Confession and repentance as a foundation for faith (V11-20)

11 For Your name’s sake, O LORD, pardon my iniquity, for it is great.
12 Who is the man that fears the LORD? Him shall He teach in the way He chooses.
13 He himself shall dwell in prosperity, and his descendants shall inherit the earth.
14 The secret of the LORD is with those who fear Him, and He will show them His covenant.
15 My eyes are ever toward the LORD, for He shall pluck my feet out of the net.
16 Turn Yourself to me, and have mercy on me, for I am desolate and afflicted.
17 The troubles of my heart have enlarged; bring me out of my distresses!
18 Look on my affliction and my pain, and forgive all my sins.
19 Consider my enemies, for they are many; and they hate me with cruel hatred.
20 Keep my soul, and deliver me; let me not be ashamed, for I put my trust in You.

Conclusion: Preserve with integrity and uprightness (V21-22)

21 Let integrity and uprightness preserve me, for I wait for You.
22 Redeem Israel, O God, out of all their troubles!

Book of Job 41-42

Job 41-42 The invincible God who blesses
GK611 Morning Devotion
08 Feb 2024
The Morning Devotion Speaker: Rev David Tan

Introduction: After enduring hardships, one will see the light at the end of the tunnel. There is no way out of the mountain, but there is another village in the darkness!

1. What man cannot do but God can! (Job 41)

(1) Who can subdue the sea monster dinosaur? (41:1-8)

Can you catch a crocodile on a fishhook? It is true that some people have caught crocodiles with fishhooks if they were the crocodiles we recognise today.
Obviously, the crocodiles the Bible speaks of here are not the crocodiles we know.
The original text of crocodile is livyathan sea monster, dragon, serpent (leviathan, sea monster, dragon)

(a) a large aquatic animal
(b) perhaps the extinct dinosaur, plesiosaurus (蛇颈龙)

Wouldn’t a dinosaur be a bird for a child to play with? Can they be sold as merchandise? They were so amazing, no one could fight them!

Have you ever seen the movie Superman vs. Dinosaurs? Although it was animated, the Bible describes dinosaurs in the same way.

Dinosaurs are supposed to be real, but Superman is definitely imaginary.

As a matter of fact, only Christians who have the help of the Holy Spirit that is to have the power of Superman, don’t they?

2. God’s power surpasses all this (41:9-34)

(1) God is unrivaled (V9-10)

If the power of the dinosaurs is invincible, God is even more so, for God is the God who made all things and the dinosaurs!

(2) Who can compete with God (V11)

Who can give to God so as to be repaid and given by God? All things come from God, so what is there to “pay” to God? It turns out that all the money we can give, all the time we can spend, all the price we can pay for our lives – all of it comes from God. In other words, it is only natural to live for God.

(3) Descriptions of sea monster dinosaurs (V12-34)

-Perfect bones (V12-17)
-Its mouth breathed fire (V18-23).
-It was invulnerable to weapons (V24-34).

Dinosaurs were huge, and their entire bodies were nearly perfect. However, the beastly nature was necessarily still beastly, and there was nothing human about it. Dinosaurs no longer exist on earth, but dragon, serpent, and beast are all words and descriptions of the devil in the book of Revelation. And they are no less a scourge and threat to the world than the dinosaurs. Therefore, how can we live a victorious life if we do not rely on God?

2. Seeing God and being doubly blessed (Job 42)

(1) Seeing God through suffering (42:1-6)

In the face of God’s question, man is speechless; he realises that he does not know how great God is. Or perhaps less than one percent of God is known to man. Through facing God’s questions, man can gradually realise what he does not know. Job had heard about God, but now he saw the Lord with his own eyes, which is a necessary part of faith. This is a necessary part of faith, just as one cannot see the rainbow until one has experienced the storm.

(2) God Himself judges friends’ fault (42:7-8)

Job’s friends criticised and judged Job, but it turned out that God was watching! When the time came, God did step in and speak. And what an honur and comfort it was that God stood up for Job! It is the most glorious victory to be able to wait patiently for God to do something, isn’t it?

(3) Restored to innocence and doubly blessed (42:9-12)

When Job went through a great trial and kept himself from giving up his faith and forsaking God, he was completely turned around by God’s hand. The glory of this latter shall be greater than the former.

4. What a blessing to have children as an inheritance (42:13-17)

In the great end of glory, it is not the mere possession of many estates that is the greatest blessing, but it is the possession of a family of children that is the greatest blessing. Moreover, the Bible records not the name of a son, but the names of three beautiful daughters. This shows that the beauty of God’s creation of women is to make the perfect family even more perfect.

Grand finale: Celebrating Reunion after hardtimes

Life on earth has its ups and downs, and although the days of darkness and hardship are long, the ultimate victory is achieved by recognising the Only God, fearing Him, and believing to the end. Moreover, victory is not for one person, but for the whole family to be blessed.

I wish you all a blessed and Happy New Year!
