Jeremiah Chapter 36: Run for God!
GK611 Morning Devotion
18/10/2024
The Morning Devotion Speaker: IP Asher

Introduction: Have you ever heard the saying “You will win if you work hard”?

Who and why are you running your life for? For the one you love, for wealth, fame, or time?

1. Act bravely for God (V1-8)

The prophet Jeremiah, under God’s instructions, wrote down His message of judgment and asked Baruch to read it to the people. Despite the danger, Jeremiah did not back down and not only write it himself, but also commissioned Baruch to risk reading it. Jeremiah’s ministry was not easy. He often faced unrepentant people and was even pursued by the king after the prophecies were fulfilled. But his actions with Baruch demonstrated loyalty and faith in God.

Running for God is not easy, but it requires courage to step out of your comfort zone and embark on the path of faith. Jeremiah and Baruch set an example for us—to act with courage no matter what the circumstances.

2. Be brave and speak out for God (V9-19)

Baruch, as Jeremiah’s assistant, faithfully carried out the prophet’s instructions and spent ten months writing the book. Although he also experienced struggles in the process, he still chose to obey God and was willing to sacrifice his personal future to faithfully record and preach prophecies. After hearing these words, the leader summoned Baruch. He read out God’s message of judgment again without hesitation, faithfully carried out Jeremiah’s instructions, completely submitted to God’s plan, and was not afraid of personal costs. The princes were frightened and thought they must tell the king. Perhaps anticipating a poor reaction from the king, they told Baruch and Jeremiah to hide first.

Running for God is not just about living your faith silently, but also about standing up and speaking out at the right moment. Responding to God’s call is not a one-time act of obedience, but continuous investment. Baruch did not shrink from the pressure and bravely responded to God’s call, demonstrating an example of loyalty and obedience.

3. Be brave and confident (V20-26)

The princes reported the contents of the scroll to the king, but the king was not afraid. He became impatient after hearing a few lines, cut the scroll with a knife and burned it. Although the king rejected God’s warning and attempted to capture Baruch and Jeremiah, God protected them. Faced with the king’s hostility, Jeremiah and Baruch did not give up and still resolutely carried out God’s plan. When we choose to run for God, we will inevitably face opposition and temptation, but true courage lies in whether we can strengthen our faith in the face of challenges without wavering.

4. Be brave and loyal to God (V27-32)

God again told Jeremiah to rewrite the book and add more content. Jeremiah and Baruch were not discouraged by their failure. They were faithful to God’s call and continued to run for Him. True loyalty is not just in good times, but in the willingness to stand up again in bad times. God’s plan does not stop because of man’s failure. He has the power to bring new grace.

Conclusion: Follow God and fight again!

In the journey of life, we will inevitably encounter setbacks, blows, and even feel that our efforts are in vain. No matter what difficulties and challenges we encounter, as long as we run for God, God will give us the strength to move forward. Redeem your courage and don’t be afraid that your hard work will be in vain. Even in failure, God is still at work.

Jeremiah 35: Obedience and Holiness

Introduction: Are you kidding me?

I. The Devout Obedience of the Rechabites (vv. 1-11)
During the final years of Jehoiakim’s reign, when Babylon, along with Aramean forces, invaded Judah for the second time, God instructed Jeremiah to invite the Rechabites to a large room on the second floor of the temple and offer them wine. The purpose was to use their example to rebuke the disobedient people, leaders, and kings of Judah.

The Rechabites refused to drink wine because they were following the commands of their ancestor Jonadab, the son of Rechab, who instructed them to never drink wine, build houses, plant crops, or vineyards (not even to make wine). Instead, they were to live a nomadic life outside the land of Canaan, always dwelling in tents. Thus, they publicly rejected the wine offered.

Jonadab had witnessed how the Israelites were tempted by the Canaanites to worship idols. To prevent his descendants from falling into the same idolatry, he issued strict commands that ensured the Rechabites would have no ties with Canaanite culture or practices.

From the life of Jonadab and the Rechabites, we can draw the following lessons:

1. Spiritual Discernment
God’s children must have the discernment to recognize and avoid the idols or distorted values of modern culture, such as materialism and hedonism. They should pursue holiness and refuse to compromise their faith, living a life set apart for Christ.

2. The Passing Down of Spiritual Legacy
Jonadab not only lived a devout life himself but also left a spiritual legacy for his descendants, enabling them to keep his commands generations later.

We must take responsibility for passing on our faith, both by teaching and by setting an example, shaping our children and even spiritual descendants to remain within God’s will. We must pass the faith from generation to generation.

3. The Cost of Obedience
From Jonadab to the Rechabites’ encounter with Jeremiah, 250 years had passed. In those 250 years, each generation of Rechabites had to pay the price of obedience to maintain their holiness and avoid being assimilated by the Canaanites. Meanwhile, King Josiah’s reforms against idol worship in Israel were only sustained for one generation, as his son Jehoiakim failed to continue them. This reminds us that faith must be passed down through generations, and each one must pay the price of obedience and faithfully carry the torch.

II. The Rebellious Disobedience of Israel (vv. 12-19)
God stated that Jonadab gave his command once, and the Rechabites obeyed for 250 years. Yet God had warned the Israelites repeatedly, from morning till night, and even sent His servants and prophets to urge them to repent, turn from their evil ways, and forsake other gods, but they refused to listen.

The Rechabites were a nomadic, foreign tribe. Jonadab only gave the command once, and for 250 years they adhered to their ancestor’s instructions. Meanwhile, God’s people, who had the temple and the law, were Jews, and were God’s chosen, repeatedly broke the covenant and refused to listen. As a result, in verse 17, God declared that He would bring disaster upon Judah and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem. In contrast, the Rechabites were promised that their descendants would always have someone standing before God to serve, like the Levites.

1. Upholding the Truth, Holiness, and Loyalty to God
Although God’s people had the prophets and His continuous guidance, they failed to heed His words. Today, do we listen to the words of our parents, leaders, and pastors? More importantly, does our faith stand firm in times of persecution and hardship? Are we steadfast in trusting and being faithful to the mission God has entrusted to us?

2. Generational Service to God through Obedience
The Rechabites obeyed Jonadab’s commands, and God promised that their descendants would always have someone serving before Him. Should we not also, out of gratitude for God’s grace, stand before Him forever? Therefore, we must cherish God’s calling and lead our descendants to serve Him for generations to come.

Rechabites

1.They faithfully obey the commands of their ancestors, even though he could have been wrong
2.Jonabab gave a single command to abstain from wine, and the Rechabites obeyed
3.Rechabites obeyed the commands with temporary significance but still faithfully adhere to them
4.Rechabites were faithful for hundreds of years
5. Rechabites were blessed for their faithfulness

Israelites

1.They broke the covenant made with the infallible God
2.God repeated command them to obey, but they resisted and refuse to listen
3.Israelites violated God’s eternal law
4.Israelites were disobedience for hundreds of years
5. Israelites were cursed with disasters for their disobedience

Let us choose to follow the example of the Rechabites, who, in a world full of temptations and challenges, obeyed and followed God wholeheartedly, walking the path of holiness, living a life set apart for Him.

Conclusion: What will you choose?

Jeremiah 34: Faithfulness to God’s Covenant
GK611 Morning Devotion
16/10/2024
The Morning Devotion Speaker: Ps Stella

Introduction:

The people of Judah promised God to free the slaves during the crisis, but they broke this promise when the situation eased slightly, and eventually they had to face God’s judgment. Therefore, we are to be faithful to our covenants with God and repent from past mistakes so that we can be reconciled to God.

1. God’s prophecies and warnings (V1-7)

God clearly told Zedekiah that Jerusalem would be captured and he would be delivered into the hands of the king of Babylon, but God still promised him a peaceful death. This brings out the coexistence of God’s judgment and mercy, reminding us that even in the darkest judgment, God still leaves room for people.

When we face crises in our lives, and circumstances feel dire, don’t forget that God is still in control.

2. Man breaks his covenant with God (V8-11)

Zedekiah and the people of Jerusalem made a covenant with God in times of crisis and decided to release all the Hebrew slaves to abide by the provisions of the law (Deuteronomy 15:12-15), thinking that through this good deed, they could please God. However, when the Babylonian army temporarily retreated due to Pharaoh’s intervention to confront Egypt, the people of Judah soon had a change of heart and recaptured the freed slaves into slavery.

We should keep our covenant with God under any circumstances, no matter how the circumstances change!

3. Serious consequences of breach of covenant (V12-17)

Through Jeremiah, God rebuked the people of Judah for breaking their covenant with God. He had decreed through the Mosaic Law that the Hebrew slaves should be freed every seven years, and they were supposed to keep this statute. However, the people of Judah ostensibly made a covenant and held a solemn and sacred covenant ceremony in the temple, but they reneged on their promise and turned their backs on God’s command after the situation improved. God therefore declared that they would pay the price for this, not only by suffering war, famine, and plague, but also by facing the fate of being dispersed.

We see that God’s attitude toward sin is serious, and the cost of breaking the covenant will be far greater than we imagine. Breaking away from God’s commandments not only has spiritual consequences, but also affects our practical lives!

4. The final outcome of the rebels (V18-22)

Through their covenant ceremony, God split the calf to warn the people of Judah who broke the covenant that their disobedience would bring devastating consequences. The king of Judah, Zedekiah, and their servants would all face the fate of being massacred and captured by their enemies. The armies of Babylon will return to Jerusalem, destroy the walls, burn the houses, and carry the people into captivity.

Breaking a covenant is not only an offense against God, but also a defiance of God. The consequences may seem distant, but God’s judgment and consequences are real. Therefore, we need to consciously maintain integrity and promptly repent of any infidelity in our words and actions.

Conclusion: From Breaking Covenant to the Call for Repentance

God is faithful, so He requires us to be equally faithful in our relationship with Him! May we take the covenant we have made with God seriously, and often examine our hearts in prayer, adjust the direction in time, and return to the embrace of God. Let us learn to rely on His faithfulness and walk in the path of integrity and faithfulness!

The Morning Devotion Speaker: Ps Daniel

1. God’s Promise of Healing and Redemption (V1-9)

The word of the Lord came to Jeremiah while he was still in prison, saying that though the people have been taken captive because of their sins and the city has been destroyed, God still promises to bring healing and revival to His people and the nation. God will deliver His promise of healing, not just individual healing but also a communal one. The cities and the nation will once again restore God’s glory!

The healing process is a reflection of Christ’s redemption in our lives. He not only brings us out of darkness but also restores our intimate relationship with God. What we often need is not just physical healing but also redemption deep within our souls. This is exactly what God has prepared for us in Christ – the promise of a new life, better than before.

2. God’s Promise of Joy and Prosperity (V10-13)

God promises that normal life will be restored among the people. In the places that were once desolate, the voices of joy and gladness will once again be heard, as well as the voices of joy of those offering thanksgiving to the Lord. In the cities that were laid waste, the sound of praise and laughter will return, and God’s people will be shepherded once more. This is not just physical recovery but a spiritual revival.

God does not only redeem our lives, He also restores our joy and worship. Even if we find ourselves in a “desolate” situation, we must give thanks and praise. God’s joy are our strength!

3. God’s Promise of a branch of Righteousness (V14-18)

In this passage, God promises the coming of a Righteous Branch—Jesus Christ—who will bring about a complete transformation. In Christ, true justice and salvation will come, not just to Jerusalem, but also the whole world!

In Christ, we have received the fulfillment of this promise. Through faith in Jesus, we receive God’s righteousness and forgiveness. No matter how broken our past may be, He can redeem us. We are also called to live out this righteousness, showing God’s love and justice to others.

4. God’s Covenant Will Never Be Broken (V19-26)

God responds to those who question His faithfulness, saying that His covenant is as unbreakable as the order of day and night. No matter how circumstances change, God’s faithfulness is unwavering like the sun, moon, and stars in the sky. He will never forsake His people, and He will keep to His covenant with Israel and restore their status and identity as His chosen ones.

God reminds us that His faithfulness will not be shaken by our doubts. He has established an everlasting covenant with us, affirming that His plan of redemption will not change even with our failures or present difficulties. We must learn to trust in God’s unwavering faithfulness, for His salvation is certain.

Conclusion:

No matter how great our brokenness or failures may be, God promises to redeem everything. His promises are not limited to just rebuilding a city; but also the restoration of our lives, empowering us by His grace to live with hope and joy. May we choose to trust in God’s eternal covenant, live out our redeemed lives, and share His hope and love with those around us.
