Exodus 5
When Obedience Meets Resistance

The Morning Devotion Speaker: Ps Stella
1. The obedience of Moses and Aaron
In accordance with God’s instructions, Moses and Aaron bravely stood before Pharaoh and conveyed God’s instructions, showing their obedience to God’s will.
2. Pharaoh’s response and resistance
Not only did Pharaoh reject them, he said, "Who is the LORD, that I should obey His voice to let Israel go?" (V2). This brings out his ignorance and unbelief in God.
When we obey God’s call, we may encounter indifference or ridicule from the world, just like Moses and Aaron. But we need to keep trusting God’s plan and not back down due to external resistance.
1. A double burden (V6-14)
Pharaoh not only refused to release the Israelites but also increased their workload even more. He asked the Israelites to complete the same amount of work without a supply of straw. This puts God’s people under greater pressure.
2. Wavering of faith (V15-19)
The rulers of Israel were beaten black and blue because they could not fulfil Pharaoh's demanding requirements. Although they begged Pharaoh, they received no mercy. This predicament caused them to become dissatisfied with Moses.
When people are in adversity, they tend to blame others for their failure and even question God's plan. Therefore, we need to be alert and focus on God’s faithfulness and plan of redemption when facing difficulties.
3. The challenge of calling (V20-21)
Moses' obedience seemed to be the cause of everyone's suffering. However, Moses’ experience reminds us that God’s plans are higher than human thoughts and that we must continue to rely on Him even in the midst of our deepest confusion.
Summary:
The test in adversity is not only an external challenge, but also a test of inner confidence. God has not abandoned us in these difficulties. He is shaping our lives through these trials and making us more dependent on His grace.
1. Human confusion (V22)
It’s easy to evaluate the value of obedience based on short-term results and ignore the long-term nature of God’s plan. At that time, Moses only saw more pain but could not understand God’s greater plan of salvation.
2. Human doubts (V23a)
Moses thought that obedience to God would bring immediate good results, but he found that the situation was even worse. We will discover that obedience to God does not always have immediate results and may even cause more challenges. However, this does not mean that something went wrong with God’s plan.
3. God’s faithfulness (V23b)
Moses mistakenly thought that God had not acted, but in fact, God’s plans are always comprehensive and long-term, and He knows when to act to best demonstrate His glory. Although Moses could not see the results for the time being, God had already begun His work of redemption.
Summary:
God’s plan is far beyond our horizons, and even in the midst of confusion and doubt, His will is accomplished without delay.
Faith is often tested and refined in adversity, and we need to wait patiently with faith for His actions!
