Isaiah 49: Listen Attentively and Believe Wholeheartedly

Introduction:

Yesterday Chapter 49 started with the second servant song. It speaks of God using his servant, the Messiah, to save the people of Israel. But for the Israelites in Babylonian captivity, they did not believe that God still remembered them. After so many years of captivity, is it still possible to return to the promised land? So, starting in the second half of chapter 49, they ask some questions about God. Today, coming to chapter 50, God continues to respond to the questions they asked.

I. Avoid Being Unteachable like Israel (v1-3)

The people of Israel believed that God had forgotten the covenant He made with their ancestors. Not only did they annul their mothers, but they also sold them to the creditors to pay off their debts. But Jehovah God pointed out that the reason why they fell into the state of being annulment and being sold was all because of their own problems.

1.Unrepentant (v1)

God told Israel that He did not voluntarily divorce their mother (Jerusalem), nor did He owe a debt to Babylon and sell them to the other party. All this is due to Israel emphasizing too much on sin and ultimately not repenting and being disobedient. It was they who forsook God and sold themselves.

2. Not responding (v2a)

God also pointed out that the people not only did not pray and wait for God vigilantly but also did not respond to what God preached through the prophet Isaiah.

Sin blinds man from hearing the call of the Holy Spirit, pointing fingers at others, and failing to examine his own life. It was pride, disinterest, and unresponsiveness that led them into captivity.

3. Disbelief (v2b-3)

Humans are weak, and even though we have experienced God’s miraculous deeds, when we encounter difficulties, especially when we pray for a long time and do not see breakthroughs, we tend to forget the miracles God has performed before, and even doubt God’s salvation with His mighty arm. Just like Israel, despite God's great miracles in Egypt, Israel did not believe that God could deliver them from captivity.

Psalm 37: I was young and now I am old, yet I have never seen the righteous forsaken or their children begging bread.

Therefore, brothers and sisters, we are all righteous and saved by the blood of the Lord. So, when we are in trouble and our faith begins to waver, it reminds us of the question that God asked Israel today, and it is also to us: "Is my arm shortened and unable to save? Am I powerless to save?” and recall the grace that God has done in the past.

II. Be Teachable like Jesus Christ (v4-9)

Although faced with many difficulties and challenges in serving, the Lord Jesus bravely accepted God's call and mission. Be the light to restore Israel's servants and Gentiles. And from the life of the Lord, we see the attributes of His righteousness and faithfulness. He is a servant who is consistent in his words and deeds, teaching by words, and teaching by example.

1. Teaching by words (v4a)

A teachable life begins with the tongue. Because the book of James tells us that if we can control our tongue, we can be perfect.

We must first be teachable, be taught by God’s words, study the Bible, pray in the morning, memorize the scriptures, and work hard in God’s words before we can spread the words that God has given us, utter words of grace, and use God’s words to support and encourage the weary man.

2. Teaching by example (v4b-11)

(1) Obedience without retreating (v4b-5)

The Lord Jesus not only has the tongue of a teachable servant, but also a heart and ears that are willing to be taught. He is not satisfied with yesterday, the day before, or past experiences of faith. Instead, listen to what the father has to say to him every morning with a longing heart and build a close relationship. Even the Lord knew that going to the cross was provoking pain, but He was still willing to obey, not defy God's will, and not retreat.

(2) Humiliate without hiding (v6)

The Lord Jesus bravely faced all the schemes and insults. He was humiliated, knowing that he was blameless and innocent. Even though He was whipped by Roman soldiers and even the flesh was excavated, on the cross, He could still say, "Father, forgive them. For they do not know what they have done."

(3) Rely upon without shame (v7-9)

We must rely on the Lord to overcome suffering and stand firm in defending the truth. Don't be confused by man-made delusions. In this way, we will not be ashamed of being a servant of Christ, nor will we be ashamed and embarrassed by the Lord in front of future generations and not be able to face future judgment.

(4) Wait without lighting your own fire (v10-11)

Through the prophet Isaiah, God called on the people to stop being hard-hearted, thinking that they could light their own fire to light the path ahead. Such people will end up miserable eventually.

The great danger of being caught in the dark is to set fire to it. But we must learn from sailors, when there is thick fog ahead, drop anchor and wait, trusting in God. We need to stay calm, rest in the peace of God and wait upon the Lord. When we are willing to let go of our intelligence, the Lord will lead us into His light.

It is necessary for Christians to live out their faith through action. Only in this way will there be a real-life testimony to influence people and glorify the Lord.

Conclusion: Choose to be like the Lord

Let us be like the Lord and become teachable servants. Have ears that can hear, a teachable tongue, and lives a life of obedience and fear of God, courageous and unshakeable. At this moment when truth and righteousness are being oppressed, let us not set fire on our own, but rely on God to live a life with real influence!
