Introduction: Grasping Sand with Hands

I. Release your hand to free the poor (v1-11)

1. Cancelled the debts of the poor (v1-6)

The last year of every seven years means the Sabbath year, and the Sabbath year is also known as the 'Yahweh's forgiveness year'. Anything that neighbours and brothers borrowed from you before, no matter what it is, can no longer be recovered, and must be released and exempted.

Exemption enables people to live out the attributes of love for one another, obedience and gratitude to God, and the manifestation of God's love and mercy. The spiritual law is always that as long as you give up for God, you will have it, and you will have it more abundantly.

In life, if you keep holding on to money, something, someone or a relationship, and you are unwilling to let go, you and the people around you will always suffer in the end. Just as God forgives our debts, let us stop chasing other people's debts. Let it go and we shall be free.

2. The mentality to release must be correct (v7-11)

When you see someone who is poor and needy, don't stop helping your poor brother just because the seventh year for cancelling debts is near. God values our mentality of helping the poor.

When lending money to someone, it is necessary to know the purpose of the other person. Not to be given to show off one's wealth. Help the poor willingly, not out of compulsion. v10 You shall surely give to him, and your heart should not be grieved when you give to him, because for this thing the LORD your God will bless you in all your works and in all to which you put your hand. Proverbs 19:17 He who has pity on the poor lends to the LORD, And He will pay back what he has given.

II. Release your hand to free the servant (v12-18)

After serving as a servant for 6 years, in the 7th year, he will be free to go out. And when leaving, do not let him go away empty-handed.

The scriptures teach us to be kind to our subordinates or employees. For those who have domestic helpers, don't treat her badly. When she resigns, if within your ability, in addition to the salary she deserves, you can also bless her more.

V16-17 And if it happens that he says to you, ‘I will not go away from you,’ because he loves you and your house, since he prospers with you, then you shall take an awl and thrust it through his ear to the door, and he shall be your servant forever.

Although there is no slavery in modern society, people often fall into the temptation of the world unconsciously and become the slaves of fame and status, slaves of lust, houses, cars, money, online games, and sins. . . Some young people even think that boys pierce their ears, girls pierce their noses, and then hang rings similar to cow noses, they are following the trend or thinking that this is art. I think spiritually, this is actually a volunteer to become a slave to the world.

Young people, adults, and even parents don’t be influenced by the environment to follow worldly trends. Let us be a troop of good soldiers who are influencing the tide to follow the Lord. We have to say to the Lord Jesus like v16, “‘I will not go away from you,’ because I love you and your house.” Let us all put our ears on the door of the Lord Jesus' heart, pierce them with an awl, be a slave and return to the Lord Jesus forever and serve Him faithfully all our life.

III. Release your hand to offer your firstborn (v19-23)

The firstborn of bulls and sheep shall not be used for any other purpose but shall be consecrated to God. This is to commemorate the time when God led the Israelites out of Egypt, killed all the firstborn sons and livestock in the land of Egypt, but protected all the firstborns of the Israelites with the blood of the Lamb (Exodus 13).

How can we apply this verse to give thanks to God?

Firstborn: The first thing you do when you get your salary is to tithe. And not after paying all the bills, and then giving the remaining to God.

Disability: God will not accept the money given through loopholes in the law, cheating or money that was given unwillingly, and those offerings with conditions attached.

Conclusion: Blessed big winner

Some people say: "Those who are willing to suffer immediate losses can become the biggest winners". In fact, this is the truth of Christ. Willingness to let it go, whether it’s to release the poor, release a servant, or offer your first born, it may seem like a loss, but on the contrary, the more we are willing to let go with grace, the more grace God will pour onto us and make us truly blessed winners!
