Deuteronomy 17: Aligning with The Heart Of God
GK611 Morning Devotion
01/11/2022
Speaker: IP Moses Ou + Rev David Tan

Introduction:

1. The Sacrifice should be aligning with the heart of God (V1)

In God's heart, He delights in our offering to Him what we can see within our ability to be good and without defect.

2. Worship should be aligning with the heart of God (V2-7)

In the heart of God, He delights in our coming to worship Him alone, and to do everything in our power to remove all powers that tempt us to worship other gods.

3. The case should be aligning with the heart of God (V8-13)

In the heart of God, He delights in our coming to the Levites, the priests who serve Him, to seek guidance about the truth in the issues of life, and then to respond according to the truth.

4. The King should be align with the heart of God

In the heart of God, the people should choose their leaders according to His ways.

(1) The king is God's chosen one (V14-15)

The choice of leaders is not following the democratic ways of the world, but to seek God who is His chosen leader.

(2) The king does not defend the kingdom by human power (V16)

Just as God's chosen king in the past did not rely on the military might of Egypt to help strengthen his defense. God's chosen leaders today should not rely on human counsel to protect the sphere of their administration.

(3) Kings must not be greedy for money and lust (V17)

Just as God's chosen kings in the past were neither shall he multiply wives for himself, lest his heart turn away; nor shall he greatly multiply silver and gold for himself. Now God's chosen leaders should not accumulate for themselves all the material resources for their own pleasure, lest they turn their lives away from God.

(4) The king must be humble and learn the truth (V18-20)

Just like God's chosen king in the past, he was to keep reading and studying God's Word all his life, and humbly lead the nation of Israel in the heart of God. God's chosen leaders today should also spend their lives continually studying God's truth and humbly leading those whom God has entrusted to them to lead.

Conclusion:

A lifetime of learning to align our hearts with God's. He delights in our offering of best sacrifices; He delights in our coming to worship Him alone; He is pleased that we come to the Levites, the priests who serve Him, for guidance in the truth; and that we establish leaders according to God's choice leaders who will continue to learn the truth throughout their lives to humbly follow God and not rely on the power of their talents.
