Jeremiah 17 Futures of Two Contrasting Life

The Morning Devotion Speaker: Ps. Daniel
1. A clear portrayal of two lives (V1-18)
(1) Two kinds of reliance (V1-8)
Here God vividly describes the depth of the people’s sin, as if engraved with metal stylus and diamond on their hearts. This shows that the sins of the people are deeply ingrained and have become their nature! God told the people two parables through Jeremiah: He who relies on man is like a plant in the desert, which withers due to lack of water. Woe to that person. Blessed is the person who relies on God, like a plant planted by the river. A tree is not afraid of drought, and its life continues to bear fruit.
How often do we rely on our connections, money, or abilities in life? God reminds us that He alone can provide an everlasting supply. Only relying on God can enable us to thrive in drought.
(2) Two mentality (V9-11)
The human heart is deceitful, and it is difficult to examine one's self because of the inherent sinfulness; but a heart that accepts God's observation can enable people to be healed from deceitfulness under God's illumination.
We often think we are upright, but God can thoroughly understand our inner motives. We need His observation and guidance in order to distinguish right from wrong and not deviate from the right path and go astray.
(3) Two options (V12-16)
Those who choose to abandon God will eventually fall into shame in the storms of life; while those who choose to call on God will find healing and salvation before the throne of God.
When facing challenges and trials, we must choose to quickly turn to God. Only by choosing to call on God can our hearts be calm and stable, and we will never be shamed.
(4) Two endings (V17-18)
Those who rely on God will experience God’s protection and no fear in the days of calamity and will eventually move toward a future of abundance and glory in God’s grace; those who reject God will eventually suffer God’s destruction of them, leading to the end of destruction!
The final outcome depends on our choices today: those who rely on God will ultimately enjoy abundant life and a glorious future; those who rely on humans will ultimately end in humiliation and destruction. May we always choose to rely on God and receive eternal promises.
2. Definite trust in God - observe the Sabbath (V19-27)
(1) Reaffirm the Sabbath commandment (V19-22)
God commanded the people to keep the Sabbath holy and stop all work and transactions on the Sabbath. Keeping the Sabbath and not working is a definite action and expression of trusting God’s provision.
(2) The blessing of observing the Sabbath (V24-26)
Keeping the Sabbath is not just a command, it has a blessing behind it. Obey God’s arrangements, and He will bless the whole earth and bring abundant peace and prosperity.
(3) Disasters for breaking the Sabbath (V27)
If the people disobey the Sabbath, it means they refuse to rely on God. God’s judgment will come, and the entire city will be destroyed.
Observing the Sabbath is not only observing a law, nor is it simply a day of rest, but it is an expression of complete trust in God and reminds oneself in the midst of busyness that the real source is in God! May we not only keep the Sabbath in action, but also truly rely on God in our hearts and believe that He is the God in charge of everything!
Conclusion:
Today, we have witnessed that the outcome of life is completely different between those who rely on man and those who rely on God. Let us not lose God’s blessings by pursuing the things of the world. Put God first in every decision and action in our lives. If you choose to trust God in your life, you will receive God’s eternal grace and promises!
