Psalm 35
[I Know Who Is With Me]

The Morning Devotion Speaker: Rev. David Tan

Introduction:

When do people long to seek God? Is it not when they encounter injustice and unrighteous treatment?

I. Three Pleas, Seven Petitions, One Heart (Psalm 35:1-10)

1. Threefold Plea (V1-3)

This passage shows us the importance of seeking God in all things. "Strive" refers to verbal disputes. To bridle the tongue, we must earnestly rely on God and speak words of wisdom.

Next comes "fight"—this refers to actual physical conflict, when things have escalated into open battle. At this point, if we do not rely even more deeply on God, we will likely suffer loss.

Let God take action instead of us taking matters into our own hands! When He both protects us and strikes the wicked, how can the enemy possibly prevail?

The third plea is to awaken our inner spiritual. We must cling with simple faith to this conviction: "God is my deliverer!" Even if the outward circumstances seem unchanged—even if God’s intervention is not yet visible—our thoughts and faith must remain absolutely resolute. This is the key to victory.

2. Seven Petitions (V4-8)

Here, the word "may" is used seven times, expressing the desire for God to judge the enemies. The number "seven" symbolizes complete divine intervention. If we merely "ask" God to act in a certain way, it might sound like a curse upon the enemies. But saying "may..." allows us to honestly express our emotions without being consumed by fleshly hatred. It reflects a sober understanding that only God’s intervention brings true justice.

3. Wholehearted Trust (V9-10)

To rejoice in God with undivided devotion—even to the point where "my bones declare" that He is the God of salvation. This is a profound depiction, truly a life experience that is etched into our bones and engraved upon our hearts!

II. Pouring Out Injustice and Loneliness (Psalm 35:11–18)

1. The Righteous Are Repaid with Evil (V11–12)

When facing the wicked, the righteous often appear isolated and helpless—struck down and speechless. This is because the injustice has surpassed human comprehension. At such times, the only thing we can do, and indeed the most proactive response, is to pour out our hearts to God.

2. The Wicked Gloat Over Others’ Suffering (V13–16)

David was a righteous man, always treating others with faithfulness and kindness. Yet here, he expresses the painful feeling of being repaid with evil for his good. The wicked rejoice at the suffering of the righteous, adding insult to injustice.

If not for Jesus Christ, how could we overcome the unreasonable attacks of sinners in this world? But when we know that the Lord sees all things—that becomes our strength!

3. Pray, Wait, Praise (V17-18)

Faith is always tested by “not seeing a way out”! But in addition to calling out in prayer, an even more breakthrough response is to give thanks and praise to God. This act not only takes us out of our immediate predicament, it even takes us directly to the throne of God. Faith declares victory!

III. Pleading for Justice and Vindication (Psalm 35:19-28)

1. Asking the Lord to intervene

Until the matter is resolved, the most positive action we can take is to continue to pray. We must not allow the enemy to oppress and humiliate us. Although the enemy does do this, we must continue to ask God to intervene!

2. Upholding Justice

God is a perfectly righteous God, and He will surely bring about a just judgment. Our part is simply to wait for His timing.

3. Constant Praise

Finally, David once again affirms that we are to continually declare God’s righteousness and offer Him praise at all times. This is an act of victory—therefore, God’s people should lift up their voices in praise and continually bless the Lord.

Conclusion: Knowing God and Trusting Him

Am I willing to entrust my grievances to God instead of defending myself or seeking revenge?
Have I ever felt discouraged after being kind to others but getting hurt in return? How can I find comfort in God?
When the wicked seem to prosper for a time, can I still choose to worship God and trust in His justice?

Throughout our lives, we must be firmly convinced that God is a righteous God. As long as we live according to His character, we will eventually witness His mighty hand at work—He will bring justice for those who belong to Him!
