Psalm 36
Self-Centeredness vs. Trusting the True God

The Morning Devotion Speaker: Ps Stella
1. Without Fear, Only Self-Will (v1)
The wicked are not ignorant of God's existence; they deliberately ignore Him and do not fear His authority. Without God's place in his heart, there is no constraint of truth—people act as they please. Whether our private life matches our public behavior is a true test of whether we fear God.
2. Self-deception and complacency without self-examination (v2)
Seeing oneself as righteous, denying the problem, and being unwilling to repent is a sign of spiritual numbness. Often shirking responsibility, making excuses, and rationalising sin are signs of ‘self-centredness’.
3. Speak deceitfully and act corruptly (v3)
The man without God is deceitful in his speech, corrupt in his behaviour, and cut off from wisdom. Spiritual hypocrisy can occur at home, in the workplace, and in the church, and so one must be alert.
4. Planning day and night without repentance (v4)
It has become habitual for sin to plot evil day and night; even “not abhorring evil”. And the greatest judgement is that “God leaves us alone”, not that “God strikes us down”.
Summary: Spiritual downfall doesn’t happen overnight, but it began with the ‘absence of God in the heart’, and it has gradually progressed. Today we need to reflect: Who is at the helm of my life?
1. God’s Attributes Are Awe-Inspiring (v5–6)
Mercy is in the heavens: All-encompassing, embracing, and never-ending
Faithfulness reaches to the clouds: Trustworthy, enduring, and unchanging
Righteousness like the mountains: Firm, and revealing truth
Judgments like the great deep: Profound, and beyond human understanding
2. God is the source of life and light (v7-9)
a. God is our shelter (v7)
b. God is our satisfaction (v8)
c. God is our direction (v9)
3. God Shows Grace and Protects the righteous (v10-12)
a. God remembers the righteous (v10)
b. God protects those who are His (v11)
c. God will eventually judge the wicked (v12)
Psalm 36 is like a mirror that shows us both ends. Are we willing to move from ‘being our own masters’ to ‘letting God reign’?
