Psalm 44: The Key to Overcoming a Downcast Heart!
GK611 Morning Devotion 01/08/2025 The Morning Devotion Speaker: Rev. David Tan Introduction: As the old saying goes: "If you want to do your work well, you must first sharpen your tools"! I. Recollection is the foundation of faith (Psalm 44:1-8) 1. Tracing the Roots of Faith (v1-2) How has God helped or blessed us in the past? This is the foundation of our faith. From knowing God to experiencing Him, these are crucial experiences and understandings that underlie our faith. Without these, we often cannot truly define our faith. 2. Identify the Source of Strength (v3-8) Victory doesn't depend on ability, but on God's grace and choice. We often misunderstand the "source," thinking that finding a job requires interview skills, forgetting that opportunities are God's provision. We rely on navigation to find direction but disregard that God is the true guide in life. We look for a partner through dating platforms but overlook that God is the true accomplisher of "lifelong matters." God's people should remember and proclaim God's deeds to inspire their faith. II. Trial is the Reality of Faith (Psalm 44:9-16) God's people don't always experience prosperity, and faith doesn't always bring outward "success." Even in times of suffering, we can honestly pour out our hearts to God, expressing our confusion and pain. This is a sign of true faith: we still cry out to Him even when we don't understand His ways. But don't forget, all these so-called trials or "discipline" are God's good intentions, aren't they? Because they are God's will to "train" His children! III. Suffering is the Perseverance of Faith (Psalm 44:17-22) Sometimes suffering isn't caused by sin or rebellion, but rather by God's sovereignty and plan. Even faithful servants of God may suffer, even "persecuted for righteousness' sake." Faith requires a depth: steadfastness even amid injustice and pain. As 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 says, "Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you." Being tested even through no fault of his own, isn't this exactly Job's experience? IV. The Reality of Calling Out as a Breakthrough (Psalm 44:23-26) Calling upon God's mercy is not based on self-righteousness, but on God's lovingkindness. This is a prayer that combines faith with genuine emotion: "In the face of suffering, we will not hide our weakness, nor give up hope." Conclusion: Spiritual Peak An experience of true faith—persisting in looking to God for mercy when He seems silent; only then can there be happiness and goodness later!
