2 Chronicles 22:Darkness Continues, but God Still Reigns
GK611 Morning Devotion 05 Nov 2025 Speaker: Ps Stella Ling Introduction: When the Light Seems to Go Out I. The Continuation of Sin (22:1–4) 1. Inherit Glory, Yet Continue In Corruption (V1–2) Ahaziah inherited the glorious royal bloodline of David but not his reverence for God. Though born into honor, he did evil in the eyes of the Lord, and became a copy of the northern kingdom’s Ahab. His downfall reminds us that spiritual inheritance does not continue automatically—faith must be chosen and renewed. If we merely keep the outer form of religion but lose a living relationship with God, we become “Christians in name only”—holding the title of glory but losing the essence of life. 2. Listen to Evil Counsel, Stray from the Right Path (V3–4) Ahaziah followed the wicked counsel of his mother Athaliah. Coming from Ahab’s family in the north, Athaliah was a shrewd and spiritually corrupt woman whose influence led Ahaziah completely astray. The root problem was that he listened to the wrong voice. In today’s age of information overload, we too must discern whose voice shapes our values. If God’s Word is not our guiding compass, we will lose our way amid the noise of the world. II. The Power of Sin (22:5–9) 1. Alliance with Evil, Path to Destruction (V5–7) Ahaziah allied himself with King Joram of Israel to fight against Aram. Politically, it seemed a strategic partnership; spiritually, it was moral decay. Scripture says, “This was from God”—meaning the Lord allowed his mistake as a means of righteous discipline. Sometimes God allows us to taste the bitter fruit of wrong choices so that we may learn reverence. Alliances with evil may seem clever, but they lead to ruin; walking with God may seem lonely, but it guarantees eternal security. 2. God Acts Justly; the Wicked Are Removed (V8–9) God raised up Jehu to execute judgment, and Ahaziah was hunted down and killed. God’s justice may appear delayed, but it is never absent. His patience gives time for repentance, but when it is time, judgment will take place. No evil on earth can overrule God’s timeline of righteousness. For believers, this calls us to hold fast to faith even in darkness, trusting that God’s sovereign hand still reigns. III. The Height of Wickedness (22:10–12) 1. Crave for Power, Murder the Kin (V10) To seize the throne, Athaliah murdered the entire royal family—including her own grandchildren. This was no longer political struggle but the total collapse of humanity. When sin is not dealt with, it spreads like cancer, devouring the heart. Power, fame, and status—once they replace God—can drive people to unthinkable acts. Her story warns us: losing the fear of God is the beginning of all madness. 2. God Raises the Righteous; Hope Is Not Extinguished (V11–12) Amid the massacre, Jehoshabeath courageously hid the young prince Joash in the temple for six years, preserving the bloodline of David. The temple—symbol of God’s presence—became a shelter of salvation. Even in the darkest hour, God raised up righteous people to protect His promise. Jehoshabeath’s bravery was like a candle in the night—small, yet lighting the flame of hope. What she preserved was not merely a royal lineage but the continuation of God’s redemptive plan—one that would ultimately lead to Jesus Christ. Conclusion: Darkness Cannot Hide God’s Sovereignty Sin may persist, evil may grow, and darkness may deepen—but God’s rule is never shaken. He still reigns in history and continues to raise up faithful “Jehoshabeaths” to guard His promises. Today, no matter how dark the society has become or how hard our personal circumstances may seem, God still reigns. Darkness is only a temporary backdrop—light is the eternal protagonist. Let us declare in faith: “Lord, You still sit enthroned as King. Your purposes will never fail!”
