Mark Chapter 16: The Way of A Disciple
GK611 Morning Devotion Speaker: Ps Asher Chang 09.01.2026 Introduction: You Won’t Know Until You Try I. Believing in the Risen Lord (Mark 16:1–11) 1. Moving forward amid uncertainty (v1–4) The women went to the tomb carrying spices, showing that their love for Jesus was genuine, yet they did not truly expect the resurrection to happen. As they walked, they discussed who would roll the stone away for them, but they still chose to keep going. The disciples' path often begins in uncertainty—not because problems are resolved, but because a heart that loves the Lord remains willing to take the next step. 2. Knowing the resurrection, yet still fearful (v5–8) Even after the angel proclaimed Jesus’ resurrection, the women recoiled in fear. This reminds us that knowing the truth does not equate to being heart-ready to face change. The disciple's path is not without fear, but it involves learning amidst fear not to let unbelief and stubbornness reign, continuing to respond to God's leading even in fear. II. Believing and Following Through to the End (Mark 16:9–18) 1. Unbelief leads to a dead end (v9–13) When one remains in unbelief, the path of discipleship comes to a halt. The risen Lord first appeared to Mary Magdalene and then to two disciples, yet the disciples chose not to believe even after hearing the testimony. Unbelief does not necessarily cause one to abandon faith altogether, but it causes stagnation, preventing further progress on the discipleship path. 2. Those who believe continue on the journey (v14–18) From rebuke to commission, those who believe press onward. Jesus rebuked the disciples for their unbelief, yet did not stop on the rebuke. Instead, He immediately entrusted them with a mission. The disciples were not sent forth because they were perfect, but were called to press onward in their willingness to believe. To believe is not merely intellectual agreement; but a willingness to step out and receive the Lord's commission. III. The Disciple’s Path Is Not Lonely (Mark 16:19–20) Working with the Lord, not going alone. Jesus ascended into heaven and sat at the right hand of the Father, and the disciples went out to preach the gospel. Scripture emphasizes that the disciples did not act on their own; but the Lord worked with them, confirming their message through miracles. The disciples' path was never sustained by their own strength, but by continuing the journey in the presence of the Lord. Conclusion: The path of discipleship is never an easy one, nor is it ever walked alone. The path of discipleship is fraught with weakness and struggle, yet it is never a solitary journey. The Lord permits His disciples to fear, to hesitate, even to be rebuked, yet He always walks with them and works alongside them. The true path of discipleship does not await perfection to begin; it is choosing to believe and continue following in one's present state. Those who believe do not press on by their own strength, but by experiencing the Lord's presence and His work.
