Esther 4: Only When We Are Not Afraid to Die Can We Respond
GK611 Morning Devotion Speaker: Ps Asher Chang 16.01.2026 Introduction: Who Is in Control? I. Fear of Loss Hinders Response (Esther 4:1-3) When Mordecai faced the crisis of annihilation, his first response was not to devise strategies, seek connections, or calculate the odds of success. Instead, he tore his clothes, put on sackcloth and covered himself in dust, and cried out loudly and bitterly in the city. This acknowledged that certain matters transcend human capability, compelling one to return to God. Sackcloth barred entry to the royal court; spiritual brokenness is not accepted by the world. Yet Mordecai would rather remain outside the gate than take off what was spiritually real. Prayer here is not the last option, but the first breath of one who belongs to God. God allows crises not merely to solve problems, but to drive people out of comfort and back into His presence. If one focuses solely on self-preservation in crisis, responding to God’s call becomes exceedingly difficult. II. Without Prayer, Death Looms Larger (Esther 4:4-14) 1. Losing Sight of What Matters (v4–5) When Esther heard the news, her first response was to send clothes to Mordecai, hoping to make the situation look less severe. We too often prioritise appearances and feelings, while ignoring the fact that the spiritual battle has already begun. 2. Being Too Quick to Say “No” (v6–9) When prayer is absent, reason ascends the throne. More information breeds greater fear; clearer reality causes faith to retreat. We think we are waiting for God, but we are actually waiting for a safe opportunity. Esther's fear was reasonable—the system, the risks, the reality were all very real. Yet ‘reasonable fear’ is most dangerous, for it leads one to ask: ‘Can I do this?’ but seldom: ‘Why has God placed me here?’ 3. Small Faith Loses the Calling (v10-14) Mordecai pointed out a spiritual truth: God's plans never fail, but people can choose not to participate. God will still deliver, but He may no longer use me. III. Only by Not Fearful of Death Can One Dare to Respond (Esther 4:15-17) The true turning point was not a change in circumstances, but a change in inner authority, but a shift in inner authority. Esther awoke, no longer allowing fear to dictate her decisions. She first resolved to obey, then fasted and prayed to subdue herself. Prayer was not procrastination, but a means to put the flesh to death and let faith live. ‘If I perish, I perish’ was not impulsiveness but liberation. When a person is no longer ruled by the fear of loss, fear loses its power and spiritual authority begins to emerge. Conclusion: Only When We Are Not Afraid to Die Can We Respond When crisis strikes, the true question is not the magnitude of the situation, but whether we remain preoccupied with self-preservation. Who knows whether you have come to the kingdom for such a time as this?
