Revelation 4: Truly Knowing God’GK611 Morning Devotion 06.02.2026 Speaker: Ps Asher Chang Introduction: Purchased, Yet Never Truly Utilised I. Knowing God in the Spirit (Rev 4:1-2) God is Spirit, and we must know Him in the Spirit. The Apostle John did not behold the heavenly vision with his physical eyes, but was ‘immediately moved by the Holy Spirit’ to see the heavens opened, the throne, and the One seated upon it. Thus we see that true knowledge of God does not depend on human reason, experience, or knowledge, but requires the revelation of the Holy Spirit. Without the work of the Holy Spirit, we remain confined to intellectual knowledge of God, unable to truly know His essence. Therefore, we must seek from God the great and difficult things, for He delights to reveal Himself to humanity through the Holy Spirit. Only when enlightened in the spirit can we be lifted from earthly perspectives into heavenly realities. II. Recognising God's Attributes (Rev 4:3-8) 1. God's Majestic Glory (v3a) The imagery of jasper and ruby reveals God's splendour and glory—not an earthly description, but a spiritual vision of His noble essence. 2. God's Covenant with Us (v3b) The rainbow around the throne is the sign of God’s covenant with Noah. It reminds us that the God who sits on the throne is faithful, keeping His covenant and remembering His promises. 3. God as King of Kings (v4) The twenty-four elders, crowned like victors, symbolise authority and glory. Though Scripture does not explicitly state their identity, this imagery powerfully reveals one truth: all who bear crowns will ultimately bow down and worship the One seated upon the throne. 4. God’s Righteousness and Majesty (v5a) Lightning, sound, and thunder emanating from the throne reveal God’s righteousness and majesty. He is not a capricious deity, but a God of authority and judgement. 5. Omniscient, Omnipotent, Omnipresent (v5b) AThe seven spirits of God demonstrating His omniscience, omnipotence, and omnipresence. 6. God's Holiness and Majesty (v6a) The sea of glass like crystal before the throne manifests God's holiness and majesty; He is wholly set apart and without blemish. 7. God is the Creator (v6b-8) The four living creatures are heavenly created beings belonging to God and subject to His authority, revealing God as the Lord who created all things. 8. God's Sovereignty and Authority (v8) The twenty-four elders, clothed in white and crowned with gold, yet seated around the throne, demonstrate that all authority originates from God and returns to Him. III. Worship and Praise in the Spirit (Rev 4:9-11) As the four living creatures ceaselessly proclaim God's holiness and omnipotence, giving glory, honour, and thanks to the eternal One enthroned, the twenty-four elders fall down in worship. They lay their crowns before the throne, acknowledging that all glory, honour, and authority belong to God. This is the truest response to the throne: worship and gratitude. For all things were created by God and exist by His will. Only by knowing the Lord in the Spirit does our worship cease to be mere formality, and our prayer cease to be mere action. Conclusion: We must yearn for the fullness of the Holy Spirit, to know the God who sits upon the throne in the Spirit. Today we must clearly know who is the God we are worshipping.
