Lamentations Chapter 3 From Lament to Song of LoveGK611 Morning Devotion 20.03.2026 Speaker:Ps Asher Chang Introduction: A Last Breath I. Days of Sorrow (Lam. 3:1–24) 1. Arise and Face Reality (v1–18) Jeremiah did not deny his suffering; he honestly expressed his feelings of being attacked, oppressed and disciplined by God. This reminds us that the spiritual life is not about pretending to be strong, but about coming before God with authenticity. However, if a person remains only in their emotions, they will sink deeper into despair. 2. Recalling the Only Strength (v19–21) Jeremiah says, ‘I remember this, and my heart takes courage.’ True transformation does not come from a change in circumstances, but from a change of mind. When one begins to reflect on God rather than dwelling on one’s problems, hope begins to take root within. 3. There Is Always a New Beginning (v22–24) It is not because we deserve it, but because God’s loving-kindness (Hesed) never fails; His compassion is new every morning. Even in the deepest darkness, people are not utterly destroyed, for God remains faithful to His covenant. As long as God remains ‘my portion’ (v24), one is never truly without hope. Thus, a new beginning does not necessarily mean an immediate change in circumstances, but rather a renewed sense of hope within and a renewed turning to God. II. The Beginning of a Song of Love (Lamentations 3:25–52) When people see God’s love, the next step is to respond. 1. Looking to the God of Salvation (v25–30) The Bible says that God will show favour to those who wait for Him and seek Him. ‘Waiting in silence’ is not passivity, but quiet trust. Sometimes God does not immediately change our circumstances, but shapes our lives through the process. The ‘yoke’ represents training; God is not burdening us, but building us up. Moreover, He will not cast us off forever, so our waiting is filled with hope. 2. Trusting in His Loving-kindness (v31–39) This passage answers a real question: why is there suffering? Though God allows sorrow, His heart remains compassionate; He does not delight in causing suffering. Suffering does not signify that God has lost control, but under His sovereignty. At the same time, we must confront our own lives rather than merely complaining. True faith is believing that God’s heart is good, even when we do not understand. 3. Repent and Turn to God (v40–51) This is the key to all transformation. “Let us search out and examine our ways” means to face ourselves seriously, and “turn back” means a change in direction. Repentance is not just emotion, but turning back to God. Many people remain in self-condemnation, but true repentance shifts from “looking at self” to “returning to God.” Even when prayers seem unanswered, do not withdraw from God. Instead, allow His light to expose us and lead us back to Him. III. Crying Out for Love in in the Midst of Lament (Lamentations 3:52–66) At the deepest point of despair, Jeremiah said, “I am cut off.” Yet even in that depth, he also declared, “I called on Your name, O Lord, from the lowest pit.” This teaches us: we do not wait until we feel better to pray. Even in the worst moments, we continue to cry out to God. God hears, God draws near, and God comforts. Circumstances may not change immediately, but His presence enters in. He sees our grievances and will bring about justice. in the midst of suffering, we must not seek revenge ourselves, but entrust everything to God. This is the central message of the chapter: as long as there is a breath left, do not cease to pray. Faith is not praying only when we feel good, but choosing to come before God even when we feel nothing. Conclusion: God’s discipline is real, and human suffering is also real. But God does not remain angry forever; He often gives us opportunities for a turning point. The question is: shall we remain stuck in the song of lament, or shall we enter into the song of love? The transition from lament to love song is not because we have become better, but because we have returned to God’s love.
