Psalm 58: Crying Out to God for Justice and FaithGK611 Morning Devotion 28.04.2026 Speaker: Rev David Tan Introduction:How do you respond to the wicked who act unjustly? I. The Judge Who Exposes Injustice (58:1-2) Do our words and deeds truly align with God’s justice? God is the absolutely righteous Judge. 1. Seeing injustice but remaining silent? (v1) External authority does not equal inner righteousness. Some sit in positions of judgment yet lack a righteous heart. The root of sin lies in ‘heart’; this is not merely wrong behaviour, but an inward deviation. 2. The evil in the heart is carried out through the hands! (v2) People often use their power to amplify evil; “Weighing out violence” means turning inner corruption into outward acts of injustice. The real problem is not the system, but the corruption of the human heart. II. A Deep Description of Sinful Nature (58:3–5) “The wicked go astray from the womb… they have venom like a serpent.” This shows that sin is an inborn tendency (a matter of nature). Humanity naturally drifts from God—it is not simply learned later. Sin is toxic and influential, like venom that harms and spreads. Resistance to truth is often intentional: “like a deaf cobra that stops its ears”—it is not that people cannot hear, but that they refuse to listen. Humanity is not just people who commit sins, but people who possess a sinful nature. We must reflect deeply: Are we people who are unwilling to listen to correction? When authorities, spouses, or those who care for us speak differently, do we often refuse to listen? If we respond this way to people, do we also respond this way to God? III. Crying Out to God for Justice (58:6–9) The passage speaks of “breaking their teeth” and “let them flow away like water.” These are prayers for God’s judgment against the power of evil. “Teeth” symbolize the ability to harm. The psalmist is not seeking personal revenge, but asking God to restrain the wicked. The end of evil is temporary and empty, like water that flows away, like a snail that dissolves, like a foetus that never sees the sun. God can swiftly end evil forces, “swept away by a whirlwind.” His judgment is sudden and complete. In summary, believers need not take revenge themselves, but to entrust judgment to God. IV. The Outcome for the Righteous and God’s Justice (58:10–11) The scripture speaks of “The righteous shall rejoice. Surely He is God who judges in the earth.” The joy of the righteous comes from seeing justice upheld—not from gloating, but from witnessing righteousness prevail. God’s judgment proves that He still reigns. Though the world seems chaotic, God continues to judge. The final conclusion: God is the righteous Judge—justice will not fail, and “surely there is a reward for the righteous.” Conclusion: Whatever the situation, God is present! Human hearts may be corrupt, and the world may be unjust, but God’s righteousness is never absent. The righteous do not triumph through revenge, but through trusting in God’s judgement.
