Psalm 60 — Turning Things Around After Defeat by Relying on God
GK611 Morning Devotion 30.04.2026 Speaker: Ps Daniel Kew 1. Acknowledging Failure (Psalm 60:1–3) i. The Pain of Being Rejected (v.1) David was known for winning battles. In 2 Samuel, it is even said that wherever he went, the Lord gave him victory. But this time, he lost. This was not just a military defeat—it was a profound spiritual wake-up call. David did not view things the way most people do. He did not focus merely on tactics or circumstances; he immediately considered the spiritual cause. When we face failure, we often blame circumstances, people, or luck. But not David. His first response was to come before God, because he believed that behind everything is God’s sovereign hand. This is the perspective we need to learn. ii. Shaking and the Cup of Staggering (vv.2–3) The imagery of the earth shaking and splitting speaks of unstable foundations. The “cup of staggering” describes a state of confusion, imbalance, and inability to stand firm. In other words, the whole system of life is being shaken. So when everything feels chaotic, don’t just rush to “fix things” and get back to normal. Sometimes what seems like a work issue later reveals relational problems—and even a shaken faith. At such times, the more important question is: What does God want me to see? What is He asking me to adjust? Failure is one way God awakens us; acknowledging failure is the first step toward turnaround. 2. Lifting Up the Banner (Psalm 60:4–8) i. The Banner of Return (vv.4–5) A “banner” is a gathering point, a marker of direction. It means that when we are scattered and confused, there is a place to realign ourselves. Often, God does not immediately solve the problem; instead, He first says, “Return to Me.” Many times we fail because the more confused we are, the more we run—and the more we run, the more lost we become. Like a person who is lost and keeps walking farther away. When confusion comes, do three things: return to God’s Word, return to prayer, and return to His presence. ii. The Declaration of God's Sovereignty (vv.6–8) In these verses, God declares: “This land is Mine, and that land is also Mine.” The situation is not out of control. God is proclaiming His sovereignty over every region. Faith is not denying difficulties; it is declaring God’s promises in the face of them: This land belongs to the Lord; my family belongs to the Lord; my life belongs to the Lord! The enemy may seem strong, but God has already placed him under His feet. 3. Turnaround Comes from God (Psalm 60:9–12) i. The Need for God’s Presence (vv.9–10) David acknowledged: “I cannot enter the fortified city on my own—I need God to go with me.” Today, when we make decisions, serve, or lead our families, we should not only ask, “Can this be done?” but also, “Is God with me? Is He going with me?” ii. Acting in Victory Through God (vv.11–12) These final verses reveal an important truth: human help is unreliable; only by relying on God can we experience true victory. What is the “fortified city” you are facing today? Your marriage? Your career? Your health? Your finances? Or a sin you have struggled to overcome? Do not rely on human methods and struggle in vain. Hold on to God’s promises, depend on His power, and let Him fight for you. Conclusion The key to turnaround is this: Do we have the courage to admit our failure? Do we have the faith to lift up God’s banner? Do we have the wisdom to rely fully on Him? The God who gives us victory over our enemies is here, waiting for us—entrust everything into His hands.
