Acts 11 Don’t Hinder the New Work God Is Doing
GK611 Morning Devotion 21.05.2026 Speaker: Ps Daniel Kew I. Break Through Old Prejudices (Acts 11:1–4) 1.Responding to Good News with Criticism (vv.1–3) Peter saw the Gentiles receive the gospel and the Holy Spirit in Cornelius’ house, which should have been a cause for rejoicing. Yet the Jewish believers criticized him because he entered a Gentile’s home. Even when people clearly see God at work, they may still judge according to their own standards. Prejudice often causes people to miss what God is doing. Today, we must also be careful not to let “This is how we’ve always done it” become “This is the only way God can work.” We must not allow our personal prejudices to rise above God’s work. 2.Patient Explanation Removes Prejudice (v.4) Peter patiently explained the whole sequence of events. This was a mature response, because after hearing the explanation, the believers realized that this was not merely Peter’s idea, but God’s leading. Today, when facing misunderstanding and criticism, we should first pray and then clearly explain what God is doing. Many people are not intentionally opposing God; they simply have not yet seen His work. II. Obey God’s Leading (Acts 11:5–18) 1.God Gives Visions to Renew Our Perspective (vv.5–10) Peter recalled the vision he received while praying in Joppa. The key point was this: God showed him that salvation was not exclusively for the Jews. God was opening a much greater door for the gospel to reach the Gentile world. God must first renew and enlarge our vision so that we can keep in step with His will. 2.The Holy Spirit Leads Us to Courageous Obedience (vv.11–17) God not only gave Peter a vision, but also provided confirmation and reminded him “not to doubt,” so that old prejudices would not hinder him. Therefore Peter said, “Who was I to think that I could stand in God’s way?” Today, when God moves us to restore relationships, to serve, or to care for others, we may not fully understand—but we must not let our lack of understanding become disobedience. 3.Lay Aside Prejudice and Give Glory to God (v.18) The people moved from arguing and criticizing to praising God; from prejudice to acceptance. They finally realized that God truly intended to extend His grace to the Gentiles. When human limitations and assumptions are torn down, we begin to see that God is greater than ourselves, and we give glory to Him. III. Follow God in Doing New Things (Acts 11:19–30) 1. Scattered Believers Spread the Gospel Further (vv.19–21) After the incident involving Stephen, the believers were scattered because of persecution. What appeared to be failure actually became an opportunity for the gospel to spread. Wherever the believers went, the gospel was preached, and “the Lord’s hand was with them, and a great number of people believed and turned to the Lord.” It is like a seed: people may think the storm will destroy it, but the wind actually carries it farther. God often uses difficult circumstances to accomplish His work. 2.Working Together to Build the Church (vv.22–26) When the church in Antioch began to flourish, Barnabas did not try to handle everything alone. Instead, he sought out Saul to serve together with him. As a result, the church became increasingly mature, and the disciples were first called “Christians.” Today, the church does not only need capable workers; it needs people who are willing to work together. God never intended for anyone to accomplish His work alone. 3. Faith Expressed Through Loving Action (vv.27–30) When the prophet Agabus foretold a severe famine, the disciples in Antioch did not merely “express concern.” Instead, they immediately gave according to their ability to help the believers in Judea. True love does not stop at prayer or emotion; it is always accompanied by practical action. Conclusion: May all of us be willing to follow and obey God, becoming people who are ready to take action and not hinder the new work God is doing. Our greatest blessing is taking paert in God's new works.
