Acts Chapter 15: Unity First, Then Launch’
GK611 Morning Devotion 29.05.2026 Speaker: Ps Asher Chang Introduction: Assembling a Model I. Led by the Holy Spirit into Unity (Acts 15:1–35) 1. Differences of Opinion Lead to Division (v1–5) Believers with a Pharisaic background believed that Gentiles could not be saved unless they were circumcised and kept the Law. It was not that they did not love God, but that they had added tradition to the gospel. Consequently, Paul and Barnabas had a heated debate. Often, people do not reject Jesus, but feel that ‘Jesus alone is not enough’. God reminds us that true salvation comes not through works, but through grace and faith. 2. Spiritual Leaders Rising to Speak (v6–11) Peter did not rush to speak, but waited until the debate had run its course before rising. He did not use authority to suppress others, but led everyone back to God’s work. God had already poured out the Holy Spirit upon the Gentiles, proving that He had accepted them. Peter said, ‘Do not place a yoke on people that we ourselves cannot bear.’ .” True spiritual leadership is not about adding burdens, but helps them draw closer to Jesus. 3. Returning to the Truth: The Core of Unity (v12–21) Barnabas and Paul testified to God’s work, whilst James quoted Scripture to confirm that this was God’s will. True unity is not compromise, but a collective return to the truth. James said, ‘we should not trouble those from among the Gentiles who are turning to God’. We cannot compromise on the truth, but in relationships we need self-sacrifice. Do not turn your own customs into a burden for others. 4. Walking in Unity, Strengthening the Body (v22–35) The apostles, elders, and the whole church came to one accord and said, “It seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us.” They not only wrote a letter, but also sent people personally to encourage and strengthen the brothers and sisters. True unity is not merely stopping arguments, but helping people regain comfort, be built up, and continue moving forward together. II. Pursuing Maturity, Continuing the Journey Together (Acts 15:36–41) 1. Loving One Another Despite Differences (v36–39) Paul and Barnabas had a disagreement over the matter of Mark. One prioritised the mission, whilst the other prioritised restoration. Both loved the Lord, but their priorities differed. The Bible does not record them attacking one another, and later Paul reaffirmed his trust in Mark. Maturity does not mean the absence of conflict, but rather a willingness to respect one another even after conflict. 2. Moving Forward Even When Parted (v40–41) Although they parted ways, they did not stop serving. One missionary team became two, and God continued to use them. The church in Antioch did not take sides, but entrusted them both to the Lord. Truly mature people do not cease following God because of a single conflict. Conclusion: Relationship Before Ministry, Pursue Unity and Move Towards Maturity
