Acts Chapter 16: The Holy Spirit Guides the Missionary JourneyGK611 Morning Devotion 02.06.2026 Speaker: Rev David Tan Introduction: Who Is Steering the Direction of Your Life? I. Gospel Mission Requires a Team (Acts 16:1–5) The Gospel requires disciples to carry on the mission! When Paul arrived in Lystra, he chose Timothy to accompany him. Although Timothy had already come to faith, he still needed to be equipped and commissioned to become part of the missionary team. God’s work is not accomplished by one person alone, but by continually raising up the next generation of workers. Timothy later became Paul’s closest spiritual son, reminding us to train and equip disciples so that the Gospel mission may be passed down through the generations. II. When the Holy Spirit Forbids, He Provides Guidance (Acts 16:6–10) The Holy Spirit determines the direction of gospel advancement! Paul originally planned to enter Asia and Bithynia, but the Holy Spirit prevented him twice. Later, he received a vision of a man from Macedonia pleading, "Come over and help us." God not only guides us in what to do, but also when and where to do it. Sometimes He closes one door in order to open a greater one. Obeying the leading of the Holy Spirit is more important than insisting on our own plans. Today, we also encounter moments when God seems to close doors—plans are disrupted, opportunities disappear, and paths seem blocked. Yet God's prohibition is not rejection but redirection; not an ending but a turning point. Spiritual maturity is not merely knowing how to move forward, but trusting God even when He says "no" and waiting for His clearer guidance. III. Following God's Leading in Spreading the Gospel (Acts 16:11–18) 1. A Businesswoman and Her Household Believe in the Lord (v11–15) God first opens people's hearts! After arriving in Philippi, Paul preached by a riverside to people who were seeking God. Scripture specifically says, "The Lord opened her heart." Salvation is not merely a human decision, but God’s work. Lydia, the dealer in purple cloth, already feared God, yet she needed to come to know Jesus. God opened her heart, enabling her and her entire household to accept the Gospel, and she became one of the earliest believers in the European church. This passage shows us that God often uses one person who responds to the gospel to influence an entire family. He also uses a welcoming household as a base for gospel ministry. Paul faithfully preached, while God opened hearts and accomplished salvation. 2. Delivering a Slave Girl from an Evil Spirit (v16–18) The gospel sets captives free! A slave girl possessed by an evil spirit continually followed Paul. Although what she said appeared correct on the surface, its source was not God. Paul cast the evil spirit out in the name of Jesus. God not only saves souls but also delivers people from the power of darkness. The gospel is not merely a teaching—it is the power of God that frees people from satan's bondage. IV. The Sufferings and Miracles of Gospel Ministry (Acts 16:19–40) 1. Persecution and Hardship Are Unavoidable (v19–24) Obedience to God does not necessarily bring smooth sailing! After the slave girl was delivered, her owners lost their source of profit. They stirred up the crowd against Paul and Silas, who were beaten and thrown into prison. After the slave girl was set free, her master’s profits were lost, so he incited the crowd to attack Paul and Silas; they were flogged and thrown into prison. Faithful service to the Lord does not guarantee freedom from persecution. Sometimes the more we obey God, the more intense the spiritual battle becomes. Yet God allows such experiences because He is preparing a greater plan of salvation. Obedience may not make life easier, but it makes life more meaningful. Gospel ministry is often accompanied by conflict because every soul rescued is a victory reclaimed from the kingdom of darkness. When we face misunderstanding, rejection, or setbacks because of our faith, we should not assume that God is absent. Often, He is using these circumstances to strengthen our faith and prepare greater opportunities for the gospel. God never wastes a moment of suffering endured for the sake of the Gospel. 2. Praise and Miracles in the Prison (v25–29) Worship can open doors for the gospel! At midnight, instead of complaining, Paul and Silas prayed and sang hymns to God. Suddenly, a great earthquake shook the prison, the doors flew open, and everyone's chains were loosened. Praise is not merely a response after circumstances improve—it is a choice of faith. When God's people continue to worship Him in the midst of suffering, He often reveals His power in remarkable ways. The prison, once a place of bondage, became the place where salvation came to the jailer's entire household. Praise is not simply the result of suffering ending; it is faith's response while suffering continues. God's miracles do more than open prison doors—they open hearts. His greatest concern is not merely changing circumstances, but saving souls. We all experience "midnight moments" in life—times of hardship, pressure, illness, or disappointment. Paul and Silas remind us that the believer's greatest strength is not escaping difficult circumstances but worshiping God in the midst of them. As we continue to look to the Lord, He may change our circumstances, but more importantly, He can use our testimony to lead others to salvation. Prison cannot confine praise, nor can chains hold back the Gospel. When God's people worship in suffering, He can turn affliction into an opportunity for salvation. 3. The Philippian Jailer Believes in the Lord (v30–34) Trembling, the jailer asked, "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?" Paul replied, "Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household." This is the most well-known gospel messages in the chapter. Salvation is not based on works but on faith in Jesus Christ. God can use what appears to be a hopeless situation to bring an entire family into salvation. The gospel not only opens prison doors but also opens the doors of human hearts. It not only transforms one life but can influence an entire family to turn to Christ. God often uses one person's salvation as the beginning of blessing for a whole household. Today, we should continue praying for the salvation of our family members without giving up, for God delights in bringing salvation into families. When a person genuinely experiences the Lord’s grace, their life’s testimony often becomes a vital bridge for their family to come to know the Gospel. One person's faith in Christ can become the starting point of blessing for an entire family; and when a family comes to the Lord, it becomes a beautiful testimony of the gospel in the world. 4. Paul Defends the Testimony of the Gospel (v35–40) Truth must be courageously upheld! The magistrates intended to release Paul quietly, but Paul insisted on a public apologies because he was a Roman citizen who had been unlawfully beaten. Paul was not protecting his personal reputation; he was protecting the reputation of the gospel and the future development of the church. God’s people must be humble, yet at the appropriate time they must stand up courageously to bear witness to the truth. Being spiritual does not mean abandoning principles, and humility does not mean allowing oneself to be trampled upon. For the sake of the gospel, God's servants must sometimes courageously defend truth and the witness, so that the church will not suffer unnecessary attacks or misunderstandings. Christians should have gentle and humble hearts, but when matters concerning truth, the gospel, and the witness of the church are at stake, they must also stand firm with wisdom and courage. Our aim is not to defend personal interests, but to uphold the witness of God’s kingdom, so that the Gospel may not be diminished. Paul defended not his own reputation, but the testimony of the gospel; not his own justice, but the protection of the church. Conclusion: Three Distinct People Who Came to Faith Lydia - Represents those who are sincerely seeking the truth. The Demon-Possessed Slave Girl - Represents those who are bound by the powers of darkness. The Philippian Jailer - Represents those who are desperate and in need of salvation. Whether they are religious seekers, people bound by darkness, or those living in despair, the gospel has the power to save them all. And the Holy Spirit is still looking for those who are willing to obey His calling and go where He sends.
