Acts Chapter 17: The Spread of the Gospel and the Responses It ReceivesGK611 Morning Devotion 03.06.2026 Speaker: Ps Stella Ling Introduction: I The gospel never remains in one place. Acts 17 records Paul's ministry in three different cities: Thessalonica, Berea, and Athens. Though he encountered people from different backgrounds, cultures, and ways of thinking, the gospel he preached remained unchanged. Yet the same gospel produced different responses. I. The Gospel Reaches Different Groups (Acts 17:1–15) 1.Proclaiming the Truth of Christ (v1–3) Paul entered the synagogue in Thessalonica and reasoned with the people from the Scriptures, explaining that Jesus is the promised Messiah and demonstrating that He had to suffer and rise from the dead. The mission of the church today is the same—not to exalt people, but to exalt Christ. What truly transforms lives is not human wisdom but the power of the gospel. 2.Producing Different Responses (v4–9) The same message produced different results. Some believed and followed the Lord, while others, driven by jealousy, opposed the message and even stirred up a riot among the crowd. The gospel not only brings salvation but also reveals what is in people's hearts. When the Word of God is shared, every person must make a choice: to submit to the truth or to persist in their own way. 3.Examining and Receiving the Word (v10–15) The Bereans were commended in the scripture because they received the message eagerly and examined the scriptures daily to verify whether what they heard was true. They neither accepted blindly nor rejected hastily; instead, they diligently sought the truth. Today, we also need to cultivate the habit of studying God's Word so that our faith is built upon the foundation of the scriptures rather than people or feelings. II. The Gospel Challenges False Beliefs (Acts 17:16–29) 1.Seeing Spiritual Need (v16–17) When Paul arrived in Athens, he saw that the city was full of idols, and he was deeply distressed. While others saw its culture and prosperity, but Paul saw the emptiness of the people's souls. Although the world today is advanced and prosperous, the human heart still needs God. God's people must look beyond outward circumstances and recognize humanity's true spiritual need. 2. Finding a Bridge for Communication (v18–23) Paul did not begin by condemning the Athenians. Instead, he started with their altar dedicated to the "unknown god." He did not alter the content of the gospel, but he communicated it in a way they could understand. Likewise, when we share the gospel today, we need wisdom to begin from a perspective others can grasp and then lead them to Christ. 3. Proclaiming the One True God (v24–29) Paul declared to them the Creator God who made heaven and earth. He pointed out that God is not an idol made by human hands, nor is He an object that people can control. The gospel not only brings comfort; it also challenges people to abandon false beliefs and misplaced sources of security. Today not many people worship physical idols, however money, success, power or self can easily become the modern idols. God calls people to turn back to Him. III. The Gospel Calls for a Life-Changing Decision (Acts 17:30–34) 1.Calling All People to Repent (v30) Paul declared that God now commands all people everywhere to repent. The gospel is not merely about gaining knowledge; it is an invitation to change the direction of one's life—from being self-centered to being God-centered. 2.Proclaiming Christ's Lordship (v31) God has appointed Jesus Christ as the Judge of the world and has proven His authority by raising Him from the dead. Jesus is not only the Savior but also the Lord who will one day judge the whole earth. Therefore, every person must seriously consider their response to Him. 3.Making Different Responses (v32–34) When the Athenians heard about the resurrection, some mocked, some said they would listen again later, and others believed. The same gospel produced different responses. God's Word still comes to us today, and we cannot remain forever undecided. Each of us must respond. Conclusion: The Gospel Continues to Spread, and People Must Respond Acts 17 shows us that the gospel continually advances into different cities, cultures, and groups of people. Yet wherever the gospel goes, the people must decide how they will respond. May we be like the Bereans, diligently searching for the truth; like Cornelius, eagerly desiring to hear God's Word; and like those who believed, humbly responding to God's message. May the gospel truly transform our lives.
