1 Corinthians 3: Beware of Building up of ‘Carnal’ Self
GK611 Morning Devotion 07/08/2025 The Morning Devotion Speaker: Ps Daniel I. Recognizing the Symptoms of Carnality (1 Cor 3:1–4) 1. Spiritual infants who can only drink milk (V1–2) Paul uses the metaphor of "milk and solid food" to point out that although the Corinthian believers believed in the Lord for many years, they were still stuck at a basic level—carnal, like infants—unwilling to grow, drinking only milk and not eating solid food. We should reflect on ourselves too: Are we content with merely listening to sermons, singing hymns, and attending meetings? Or are we actively studying the Bible, praying, practicing the truth, and pursuing deeper spiritual growth? 2. Suffering from divisions in the church (V3–4) Jealousy and quarrels are evidence of carnality. When preachers are viewed as more important than Christ—much like idolizing celebrities—it becomes a form of idolatry. Don’t compare who is more spiritual, but instead appreciate each other's gifts: some preach, some equip others, some intercede. Unity is the mark of God's household. II. Dismantling Carnal Disputes (1 Cor 3:5–9) Paul and Apollos are merely servants of God. It is God who truly causes life to grow. We are merely God’s co-workers; the field and the building belong to Him. In service, do we always want recognition and praise? Don’t steal God’s glory—we are only vessels. All the credit belongs to the Lord! III. Discern the Materials of Spiritual Work (1 Cor 3:10–15) 1. Material A: Gold, silver, precious stones (V10–11) High-quality materials like "gold, silver, and precious stones" refer to things of eternal value: obedience to truth, love, holiness, perseverance, etc. These will shine even brighter after being tested by fire. 2. Material B: Wood, hay, and straw (V12–15) Work that appears passionate but lacks a foundation in truth—done to please people rather than God—will ultimately be burned up. Our daily words, thoughts, time, and service are all part of the material we choose to build with. What we build with today determines whether we’ll receive a reward or suffer loss in the future. IV. Guard the Temple of God (1 Cor 3:16–23) 1. Know that you are God’s temple (V16–17) Paul says that believers are the temple of God, and God's Spirit dwells among them! Anyone who destroys God’s temple will be punished by God. Are our words and actions building up or tearing down the church? We must respect the church and fellow believers—don’t speak words that destroy the church, or do things that harm it. 2. Empty worldly self-deception (V18–20) The world’s wisdom—like success theories, manipulation, and hedonism—is foolishness in God’s eyes. God has already seen through the vanity of human wisdom. We must acknowledge our own limitations and not let worldly thinking replace God’s truth. Instead, pursue biblical wisdom, even if it seems "foolish" in the world’s eyes—such as forgiving enemies or believing it’s more blessed to give than to receive. 3. God has already given you everything (V21–23) All things are yours—people, circumstances, time—they are all part of the inheritance for God’s children. For you belong to Christ, and Christ belongs to God. This is our ultimate identity and glory. As those who belong to Christ and whom all things serve, we should live lives that are free, abundant, and without striving—stewards who wisely manage all that God has given. Conclusion: When we argue over who we belong to or take pride in "wood and straw" kinds of work, remember: we have already inherited all things! The cure for carnality is to live out the noble identity of being God's children!
