1 Corinthians 12: One Lord · One Spirit · One Family
GK611 Morning Devotion 22/08/2025 The Morning Devotion Speaker: Ps Asher Chang Introduction: A family is incomplete when any member is missing I. The Same Starting Point (1 Corinthians 12:1–3) The true spiritual foundation is not what gifts we possess, but that we confess Jesus is Lord. In the past, we were drawn to serve idols, but now we are moved by the Holy Spirit to acknowledge Jesus as our Lord. This means that spirituality is not an external expression but an internal submission. Just as a ship without compass drifting wherever the wind blows, the Holy Spirit is that compass, always pointing to Jesus. Our starting point is the same: acknowledging Jesus as Lord. II. The Same Source (1 Corinthians 12:4–11) 1. Gifts are not for boasting (v4–7) All gifts come from the same Holy Spirit; ministries are entrusted by the Lord, and the workings are accomplished by the Father. Gifts are not rewards but presents, so there is nothing to boast about, only gratitude. Like a symphony orchestra, different instruments under the same conductor can play a harmonious piece. 2. Gifts that complement one another (v8–11) The Holy Spirit distributes gifts to different people so that we may depend on one another and build each other up. We do not need to envy others, nor should we despise ourselves. The church is not a solo performance but a rich banquet—like a mixed rice stall where each dish is different, yet together they make a satisfying meal. III. The Same Body (1 Cor 12:12–30) 1.Without relationships, there is no body (v12–27) The church is the body of Christ. Baptism is not an individual event, but an entry into community life. No one can say they are unimportant, nor can anyone say they do not need others. Those who seem weaker are actually indispensable. Just as when a small finger is injured, the whole body feels the pain, so when one member suffers, all suffer together; when one member is honoured, all rejoice together. Without relationships, there is no body. 2.Without pillars, nothing can stand (v28–30) God has established different offices and gifts in the church, each with its own order and function. Apostles, prophets, and teachers are like pillars, laying a solid foundation for the church; other gifts and ministries are like bricks, beams, and roofs, together building God’s house. No one can say they are the only important one, nor can anyone say they are dispensable. Just as a building needs pillars for support, it also needs bricks, tiles, and a roof; without any of these, it is incomplete. IV. The same path of love (12:31 → Chapter 13) No matter how great the gift or how strong the ability, without love, it all loses its meaning. Paul says, “I now show you the most excellent way.” The path of love. Love is the only track on which all gifts run; without love, even the most beautiful gifts are just empty sounds. With love, the church becomes a home. Just as a building may be majestic on the outside, but if there is no love inside, it is just a cold, empty house; if it is filled with love, even a humble house will make people want to live in it. Conclusion: A home cannot exist without love 1 Corinthians 12 reminds us: We have the same starting point, which is acknowledging Jesus as our Lord; we have the same source, which is the gifts freely given by the Holy Spirit; we are the same body, complementing and caring for one another; we must walk the same path of love, making the church a true home. A home cannot exist without love.
