1 Corinthians 13: The Truth of Love1 Corinthians 14: The Instruction Manual for Using Spiritual Gifts GK611 Morning Devotion 27/08/2025 Speaker: Ps Stella Introduction: Spiritual gifts are not for personal display, but for building up the community; not for disorder and confusion, but for manifesting the glory of God. I. Core Function of Spiritual Gifts: Building Up the Church (1 Cor. 14:1–12) 1. The Scope of Tongues (v1–5) Paul reminds us that speaking in tongues edifies the individual, but without interpretation it cannot edify others. The foundation of gifts is not the pursuit of being “special,” but being rooted in love so that the whole community benefits. 2. The Benefits of Prophecy (v6–12) Prophecy clearly conveys God’s heart, enabling people to understand the truth and be built up in life. Compared to the vagueness of tongues, prophecy is like the clear sound of music or a trumpet, giving people direction and strength. II. The Right Way to Operate: Engaging Both Spirit and Understanding (1 Cor. 14:13–25) 1. Tongues Need Interpretation (v13–19) Without interpretation, tongues remain at the level of personal experience and cannot build up the church. Paul says, “I would rather speak five intelligible words than ten thousand words in a tongue.” True spiritual worship allows others to understand and be edified. 2. Prophecy Brings Light (v20–25) Prophecy exposes the secrets of the heart, leading people to repentance and turning to God. Tongues may confuse unbelievers, but prophecy can make them fall down in worship and declare, “God is truly among you.” III. Safety Guidelines: Meetings Must Be Orderly (1 Cor. 14:26–40) 1. Tongues Must Be Limited (v27–28) If there is no interpretation, the one speaking in tongues should remain silent and pray privately. Gifts should be exercised in orderly manner to edify everyone. 2. Prophecy Must Be Discerned (v29–33) Prophetic messages should be evaluated by others, for God is a God of peace, not disorder. The work of the Holy Spirit brings clarity, not loss of control. 3. Women to Remain Silent (v34–36) Paul’s instruction addressed the disruptive context in Corinth at that time. It was not an absolute prohibition, but a call to prioritize order. 4. All to Submit to the Word of the Lord (v37–40) Those who are truly spiritual will submit to God’s Word. Everything should be done in an orderly manner so that the gathering manifests God’s presence and glory. Conclusion: If spiritual gifts are not used according to the “instruction manual,” they will cause confusion. Paul reminds us that spiritual gifts must be rooted in love, aimed at building up others, and safeguarded by order. Just like an orchestra playing under a conductor, only then can a harmonious symphony be produced.
