1 Corinthians 16: Standing Firm in the Truth · Living Out Love GK611 Morning Devotion 29/08/2025 Speaker: Ps Asher Chang I. Building Relationships of Love and Trust (1 Cor. 16:1–12) 1. The Act of Trust in Giving (v1–4) Paul encouraged the Corinthian church to give to the Jerusalem believers, an act that flows out of love. Though he had the authority, he did not handle the money himself; but entrusted them to trustworthy individuals recommended by the church, demonstrating trust and transparency. Are we willing to give to brothers and sisters far away? Are we able to trust the guidance of spiritual authority and become a channel of love? 2. Trusting the Guidance of Authority (v5–9) Here Paul explained his plan to travel through Macedonia to Corinth, yet his schedule was vague and full of uncertainties. Spiritual guidance is not always crystal clear; rather, it often requires us to take one step at a time, moving with the Holy Spirit. Many things truly cannot be fixed in advance. We all like certainty, but spiritual leading is often “one step at a time.” To live in God’s plan, we must learn Paul’s spiritual maturity—his reverence for God’s leading and his sincerity toward the church. 3. Trusting the Calling of Co-workers (v10–12) Apostle Paul mentions two co-workers: Timothy, a younger disciple, and Apollos, a preacher well-regarded by the Corinthians. He exhorted the Corinthian church to learn to trust every worker sent by God in love, regardless of their age, background, decisions, or itinerary. We must learn to receive every servant sent by God, releasing trust through love without prejudice or suspicion. Spiritual unity is not merely about outward appearances but about wholeheartedly accepting the vessels God uses. II. Standing Firm in the Truth with Unshaken Love (1 Corinthians 16:13–14) In this brief passage, Paul gives the Corinthian church five crucial commands: 1. Be alert 2. Stand firm in the faith 3. Be courageous 4. Be strong 5. Do everything in love These five phrases, though seemingly simple, carry immense weight, encapsulating the very essence of Christian discipleship: Truth, conviction, courage, and strength—yet none can exist without love. Otherwise, everything becomes an empty shell of legalism or a disguise of self-righteousness. III. Honouring Imitable Role Model in Obedience (1 Cor. 16:15–24) 1. Honouring Faithful Servants (v15–18) At the end of the letter, Paul specifically named several brothers who served quietly, and he emphasized clearly that they deserved honour, imitation, and cooperation. They were not highly gifted or prominent figures, nor were they famous apostles, but men “devoted to serving the saints.” 2. Love as the Mark of the Church’s Mark (v19–24) This section forms Paul’s epistolary conclusion, yet it is no hasty farewell. Between the lines, he leaves several vital messages: love, unity, holiness, and anticipation of the Lord’s return. These constitute the spiritual characteristics of a community belonging to the Lord. Paul concludes his letter with these words: If anyone does not love the Lord, let him be accursed." This sounds harsh, yet it rings true. Paul ended with: “If anyone does not love the Lord, let that person be accursed.” Though it sounds harsh, it is profoundly true. He knew well that if love for the Lord is absent in the church, then all worship, service, and systems are nothing but empty religion. This also points to a spiritual reality: the world is full of indifference, skeptical, and calculating. If the church loses love and trust, it becomes indistinguishable from the world. Conclusion: Standing firm is not merely about stance, but love within one's very being. This chapter does not conclude hastily, but rather Paul's heartfelt exhortation to the church and his call for trust. He moves from offerings to itineraries, from fellow workers to models of service, ultimately returning to the most fundamental point: however, many positions, gifts, or plans one may possess, without love, all is in vain.
