2 Corinthians 9: The Blessing of Cheerful Giving GK611 Morning Devotion 16/09/2025 Speaker: Rev David Tan Introduction: Giving is like Sowing Seeds I. Willingly Prepared Provision (2 Cor 9:1-5) The previous chapter addressed the topic of ‘providing for the needs of the saints,’ which is helping believers in need. This chapter further elaborates on the principles of this truth. Paul exhorts the Corinthians to ‘prepare beforehand,’ emphasising that giving should not be a momentary impulse, but the fruit of long-term planning and born of a willing heart. What God values is not the amount, but the heart that has been prepared in advance. If we cultivate daily intimacy with the Lord and maintain a heart of gratitude, we will neither hesitate nor feel ashamed when it comes to giving. Whether as individual Christians, Christ-centred households, or even the church as a whole, we ought to have a ‘giving plan’ rather than giving hastily only when needs arise.. In this season of actively serving our community, the Holy Spirit repeatedly reminds us to give generously out of love. May the Lord grant us hearts that are ever willing, prepared to respond to His grace; and may we experience His blessings! II. The Principle of Willingness in Sowing and Reaping (2 Cor 9:6-11) 1. Sowing Much and Little (V6) ‘He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully.’ This is the law of God's kingdom. Do I often hold back out of fear of lack? In reality, God is my true Provider. 2. Willingly or Reluctantly (V7) When I choose to sow generously and willingly, rather than give reluctantly, God promises to multiply my provision, ensuring I ‘always have enough for every need.’ Giving is not a loss, but entering the channel of God's grace in circulation. True joy comes from knowing that while blessing others, We ourselves are being blessed by God. 3. Abundance and Giving (V8-11) Fear not that ‘giving out’ will lead to lack, for God promises ‘abundant provision.’ Giving is not loss, but living by the principle of God’s flowing blessings. May the Lord help us break through the limitations of small faith, believing that God can abundantly supply, enabling us to willingly become channels of blessing! III. Producing Thanksgiving and Glory (2 Cor 9:12-15) Paul declares that giving not only supplies the needs of the saints but also brings forth ‘abundant thanksgiving to God.’ Thus, my small offering becomes a subject of gratitude in others' prayers, bringing glory to the Lord. Ultimately, Paul reminds us: the greatest gift is Christ Himself—an inexpressible gift. Every act of giving is merely a response to the infinite grace He first bestowed upon us. Every act of giving is an opportunity to bear witness for the Lord. Giving creates bonds of intercession and love between believers and those they support. Thank the Lord for giving us Jesus Christ. May our lifelong giving become a sacrifice of praise, giving glory to God. Conclusion: Experiencing the Blessing of Giving •Giving is not a legalistic obligation but a gracious choice of blessing. •When we willingly prepare and sow generously, God causes us to bear much fruit, enriching us while bringing Him glory. •The greatest offering is Christ Himself, God’s ‘inexpressible gift.’ Because of the Lord, we too become a blessing to others.
