2 Corinthians 4: From the Temporary to the Eternal GK611 Morning Devotion 05/09/2025 Speaker: Ps Asher Chang Introduction:Keep Smiling! Introduction: Temporary vs. Eternal I. For Jesus Alone, Not for Ourselves (2 Cor 4:1–6) 1. Abandoning Darkness for Light (v1–2) Paul declares, ‘since we have this ministry, as we have received mercy, we do not lose heart.’ Ministry does not depend on credentials but on mercy; not on tactics, but on rejecting obscurity, eschewing deceit, and not diluting the truth. We simply declare the truth plainly, so that everyone’s conscience testifies before God. Today we too face the tug-of-war between ‘truth vs reality’: Have we diluted truth for the sake of reputation, performance, or popularity? The Lord seeks transparent vessels, not ‘skilled performers.’ 2. Steadfast Faith (v3–4) If the gospel is veiled, it is not because the gospel is unclear, but because unbelief blinds the mind through ‘the god of this age.’ The key lies not in numerical outcomes, but in faithful perseverance. Let not ‘results-oriented thinking’ steal our faith. If some reject it, this does not mean the gospel is untrue or that you are inadequate; if the curtains are drawn, the sun's brightness cannot penetrate. 3. Focus on Christ (v5–6) We do not preach ourselves, but Christ Jesus as Lord; we are bondservants for Jesus‘ sake. The God who said “Let light shine out of darkness,” has shone His light into our hearts, so that we may see the light of the glory of God in the face of Christ. In this age, it is easy to build personal brands, even ministry can become self-centered. Paul directs all spotlight upon Christ, stepping back into the background himself. II. See Through God's Eyes, Not Our Own (2 Corinthians 4:7–15) 1. Extraordinary Power (v7) We hold this treasure (the gospel and Christ's life) in earthen vessels, to show that ‘this extraordinary power comes from God, not from us.’ The world values the vessel's splendour; God values whether Jesus dwells within it. The more we acknowledge ourselves as earthen vessels, the greater the treasure appears. 2. Always a Way Out (v8–9) Surrounded by adversity—yet not overwhelmed; in distress—yet not in despair; persecuted—yet not forsaken; struck down—yet not destroyed. This is not to say there are no storms, but that God remains present in the storms. It doesn’t mean we never sink, but that the Lord upholds us. When we are crushed by competition, wounded by relationships, misunderstood in faith, or struck down by illness, remember: adversity is not the end, and being struck down is not death. 3. Glorifying God and Benefiting Others (v10–15) Paul ‘always carries about in the body the dying of Jesus, that the life of Jesus also may be manifested’; ‘death is at work in us, but life in you.’ Suffering is not meaningless. It brings life to others, multiplies grace, and brings glory to God. A Christian's ‘self-denial’ is not self- destruction, but ‘allowing the life of Christ to grow out of us’; not for winning face, but for winning souls. III. Transcending the Visible, Living Out Hope (2 Cor 4:16–18) Therefore, we do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day. For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory, 18 while we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal. God leads us from the third dimensional realm of sight into the fourth dimension of faith: the vision of faith, eternal thinking, and heavenly values. Conclusion: Transcending the temporary to enter eternity
