Acts Chapter 12: We Must See the Hand of God
GK611 Morning Devotion 22.05.2026 Speaker: Ps Asher Chang Introduction: A Spark Can Start a Prairie Fire I. God Always Has a Way Out (Acts 12:1–11) 1. When People Think It Is the End (v1–6) James was killed, Peter was arrested, and four squads of soldiers guarded him closely. The whole situation seemed to grow darker and darker. The only thing the church could do was pray earnestly to God. What was most remarkable was that Peter was actually sleeping in prison. True peace is not the absence of problems, but knowing that God is still in control. Many times, we also feel that life has come to a dead end, yet God often begins to work when people are most helpless. 2. Yet God Remains in Control (v7–11) God sent an angel into the prison. The chains fell off, the iron gate opened by itself, and Peter was led out of prison. God can open doors that no man can open. Interestingly, while the prison gate opened automatically, the door of the believers’ house was slow to open because although they prayed, they hardly dared to believe that God would truly act. Many times we are the same. We ask God to make a way, yet forget that He is already the God who makes a way. II. God Always Acts in His Own Time (Acts 12:12–23) 1. God’s people continue to bear witness (v12–19) After Peter’s deliverance, he did not merely flee for his life, but went first to tell his brothers and sisters how God had rescued him from prison. Peter, who had once denied the Lord, now continued to bear courageous witness to God even in the face of persecution. Those who have truly experienced God will not remain silent. The darker the night, the more the light must be held aloft. 2. The Proud Will Eventually Fall (v20–23) Herod put on his royal robes and accepted the people’s praise as though he were a god, yet he did not give glory to God. Immediately, an angel of the Lord struck him down, and he was eaten by worms and died. Peter exalted God and experienced deliverance; Herod exalted himself and experienced judgment. People may rise to great heights for a season, but the One who truly reigns is still God. III. No One Can Hinder God’s Word (v24–25) 1. God’s Word Will Be Proclaimed (v24) Although apostles were killed and the church was persecuted, the passage ends by saying: “But the word of God grew and multiplied.” People may attack the church, but they cannot stop the work of God. Church history has also proven that the more the gospel is oppressed, the more widely it spreads. 2. God’s Work Continues Moving Forward (v25) After Barnabas and Saul had completed their ministry, they pressed on, and the Gospel was about to enter a new phase. Human plans may come to an end, but God’s work never stops. God continually raises up new vessels and new co-workers to advance His kingdom. Conclusion: It is God’s hand that keeps the church moving forward. It is God’s hand that causes the gospel to continue spreading; and it is God’s hand that enables us to persevere to this very day.
