Acts Chapter 14: Beaten, Yet Not Defeated
GK611 Morning Devotion 28.05.2026 Speaker: Ps Daniel Kew I. Facing Opposition: Knowing When to Stay and When to Leave (Acts 14:1–7) 1. Staying Bold and Preaching the Word (V1–4) Paul and Barnabas came to Iconium and preached the gospel. Many Jews and Greeks believed in the Lord. However, opponents stirred up the crowds against them. As a result, the whole city became divided into two groups — those supporting the gospel and those opposing it. In the face of pressure, Paul and Barnabas did not shrink back. Instead, they remained there for a long time, speaking boldly in reliance on the Lord. Today, many Christians retreat as soon as they encounter opposition. When family members disapprove, they become silent. When coworkers mock them, they stop speaking. When criticized in ministry, they give up. But God reminds us: if He has not told us to leave, we should not cease obeying Him because of the people’s voices. 2.Leaving at the Right Time Is Also Wisdom (V5–7) The Gentiles, Jews, and local leaders joined together in a plot to mistreat and stone Paul and Barnabas. When the two apostles learned about it, they left Iconium and went to Lystra and Derbe to continue preaching the gospel. Sometimes to depart is not an act of cowardice, but wisdom. Life is a gift from God and should not be sacrificed carelessly. As long as we are not running away from responsibility, but following God’s leading, to depart may simply mean to continue God’s work elsewhere. II. Facing Honor and Shame: Remaining Humble (Acts 14:8–20) 1.Performing Miracles and Being Treated as gods (V8–13) Paul healed a man who had been lame from birth. The crowds thought Paul was Hermes and Barnabas was Zeus. Even the priest from the temple of Zeus outside the city brought bulls and wreaths, intending to offer sacrifices to them. This temptation of being “treated like gods” can be even more dangerous than being stoned. When people throw stones at you, you know you need to run. But when people praise and exalt you, you may not want to lower yourself. When we are honored, we must first remember this: when others treat you like a god, remember that you are only human. 2.Tearing Their Clothes and Giving Glory to God (V14–18) As soon as Paul and Barnabas heard that the crowd wanted to sacrifice to them, they tore their clothes and rushed into the crowd, shouting, “We are human beings too!” Then they preached about the living God who created heaven and earth. They did not accept worship, but urgently redirected all glory to God. When others praise us, we do not need to pretend to be humble, nor should we take in all the praise for ourselves. Instead, we can humbly say, “Thank God for His grace.” Giving glory to God is the right attitude when receiving compliments. 3.Severely Beaten, Yet Not Defeated (V19–20) Jews from Antioch and Iconium came and persuaded the crowds against Paul. The very people who had wanted to worship him now stoned him, dragged him out of the city, and left him there thinking he was dead. But while the disciples gathered around him, he got up. The next day, he continued on to Derbe to preach the gospel. Have you also been “struck” before — wounded by words, misunderstood, betrayed, or isolated? Wanting to leave after being hurt is only natural. But Paul shows us a better example: not pretending the pain does not exist, but relying on God’s grace to rise again and keep moving forward after being wounded. III. Facing Hardships: Return to Strengthen Others (Acts 14:21–28) 1.Return to Strengthen the Hearts of the Disciples (V21–23) Paul and Barnabas returned to the very places where they had been persecuted. They strengthened the disciples, encouraged them to remain faithful, and reminded them: “We must go through many hardships to enter the kingdom of God.” Afterward, they prayed and fasted, committing the believers to the Lord. Today, we also need to strengthen others. A word of encouragement, a visit, or a prayer may become the very strength someone needs to keep going. 2.Sharing Testimonies to Strengthen the Church (V24–28) Finally, Paul and Barnabas returned to the church in Antioch that had sent them out. They reported in detail all that God had done, especially how He had opened a door of faith to the Gentiles. Their emphasis was on what God had done, not on what they themselves had accomplished. Sharing testimonies is not about showing off or gaining sympathy. It is about allowing the church to receive grace together. Your testimony can strengthen others, and the prayers of others can sustain you. Conclusion: This chapter teaches us a powerful truth: God’s will is not necessarily to keep us from every “stone,” but to help us rise again through the Lord after we fall and are wounded — continue to preach the gospel, strengthen fellow believers, and give all glory to God.
