Acts Chapter 19: Pressing On Amidst Challenges
GK611 Morning Devotion 05.06.2026 Speaker: Ps Asher Chang Introduction: Facing Challenges Head-On, Unwavering in Adversity I. Walking with God, Advancing the Gospel (Acts 19:1–22) 1. Walking with the Holy Spirit (v1–7) Upon arriving in Ephesus, Paul’s primary concern was not the number of people, the ministry, or the circumstances, but whether these disciples had received the Holy Spirit. For in the face of spiritual warfare, what matters most is not human ability, but the power of the Holy Spirit. Those who walk with God do not rely on their own zeal and experience, but on the Holy Spirit’s guidance and help. Today, many possess knowledge of the faith but lack the power of the Holy Spirit; consequently, they become disheartened and retreat when challenges arise. Those who are truly able to press on are those who continually rely on the Holy Spirit. 2. Preaching the Truth with Boldness (v8–12) Once these disciples had received the Holy Spirit, Paul continued to preach God’s word with boldness. He first preached in the synagogue for three months, but when he encountered opposition and slander, he left the synagogue and moved to the school of Tyrannus to continue teaching. Paul did not stop simply because one door had closed; instead, he continued to seek the doors that God was opening. As a result, the Gospel spread from Ephesus throughout the whole of Asia. We too often encounter rejection, failure and obstacles, but when God closes one door, He is often preparing a greater one. Those who walk with God do not cease to move forward because of obstacles. 3. Glory to the Name of the Lord (v13-18) Some exorcists, seeing the power with which Paul cast out demons in the name of Jesus, sought to imitate him. But the evil spirit retorted, ‘I know Jesus, and I know Paul, but who are you?’ They knew the name of Jesus but did not know Jesus Himself; they possessed the testimony of others but lacked a personal relationship. Through this incident, God made it known to the whole city that Jesus is not a magic spell, but the true God. Today, too, we cannot rely on the faith of our parents, small group leaders or pastors; we must come to know the Lord for ourselves. For what truly enables us to face challenges is not borrowed faith, but the relationship we build with the Lord ourselves. 4. The Word of God Spread Rapidly (v19–22) Once the name of the Lord Jesus was exalted, many began to confess their sins and repent, bringing out all the books they had used for sorcery and burning them. These books were of great value, yet they were willing to pay the price to break free from the bondage of their past. True revival is not merely an emotional stirring, but a genuine transformation of life. The reason God’s word flourished so greatly was not because people were moved once, but because they were willing to lay aside their old lives and choose to obey God. As God’s word continued to advance, people’s lives were consequently renewed and transformed. II. Walking with God, Fearless in Battle (Acts 19:23–41) 1. The Gospel’s Growth Brings Conflict (v23–34) As the Gospel flourished, so did the challenges. Ephesus was home to a famous temple of Artemis, and many people earned their living by crafting idols. As more and more people came to believe in the Lord and ceased worshipping idols, the silversmith Demetrius’s business suffered, so he incited the crowd to riot. On the surface, they were defending religion; in reality, they were protecting their own interests. When the Gospel truly makes an impact, it often touches upon people’s values, interests and idols. Therefore, the emergence of challenges does not necessarily mean we are on the wrong path; sometimes, it actually proves that God is at work. 2. God is in control; the storm subsides (v35–41) Faced with city-wide unrest and chaos, Paul even considered entering the theatre to address the crowd, but God prevented him through the disciples and his friends. Ultimately, it was not Paul, nor a miracle, that quelled the turmoil, but a city clerk. God used a seemingly ordinary person to restore peace to the entire city. Here we see that God’s work is not necessarily accomplished through spectacular miracles; He can also use circumstances, institutions and people to fulfil His will. Paul did not control the situation, but God remained in control throughout. Though the storm was fierce, God never relinquished His authority. Conclusion: The challenges have not diminished, but God’s presence will never depart.
