Acts Chapter 5: The Purity and Power of the Church
GK611 Morning Devotion 12.05.2026 Speaker: Rev David Tan Introduction: A truly powerful church is not merely ‘passionate’, but ‘authentic’; not only displaying miracles outwardly, but also possessing holiness inwardly. I. What Fills Our Lives? (5:1–11) I the early church, where everyone experienced the fullness of the Holy Spirit, everyone displayed extraordinary vitality. Take the couple Ananias and Sapphira, for instance: they were moved to sell their property and give the proceeds to the church. This should have been a beautiful act;yet Peter rebuked them, asking, “Why has satan filled your heart?” This is something deeply worth reflecting on. How could someone in a Spirit-filled environment still be filled by satan? Is this a very real test of the Christian life? To uphold the truth on the one hand, yet ‘violate’ it on the other? What exactly is filling our lives? The Christian life is a test of whether we are truly ‘Pure & Simple’! II. How Do Miracles Happen? (5:12–16) God delights in saving people, including through the healing of sickness to display His mighty power. Yet these ‘miracles’ do not occur naturally, nor are they usually achieved by prayer alone. From the very beginning of the Church, the Holy Spirit has delighted in manifesting His mighty works through human ‘vessels’. After the apostles were filled with the Holy Spirit, they were greatly used by God. It even seemed as though their whole beings had become “sanctified,” to the point that even Peter’s shadow carried healing power. This passage is not primarily teaching us the principles of a “theology of miracles,” but rather showing us how far God’s work can go. Is this not the kind of spiritual pursuit we should long for and expect? III. Experiencing Power Inevitably Involves Trials (5:17–32) Even though God intervenes in the daily lives of Christians, this does not mean we are exempt from the many problems of the natural world. Enemies arise, and those in authority who do not believe in God launch destructive attacks, even arresting apostles filled with the power of the Holy Spirit and throwing them into prison. God did not prevent these things from happening, yet there is much to learn from such trials. For example: God can perform supernatural deliverance, so that the body of Christ may pray with greater urgency; when miracles occur, everyone witnesses God at work—this is precisely an opportunity to bear witness for the Lord! IV. God’s Work Cannot Be Destroyed by Man (5:33–42) When the Sanhedrin sought to destroy the apostles, Gamaliel reminded them: if this work were merely of human origin, it would eventually fade away like the movements of men in the past; but if it were of God, men could not destroy it, and indeed might be opposing God. Consequently, although the apostles were flogged and forbidden to preach, they did not retreat. Rather, they rejoiced that they were counted worthy to suffer for the Lord, and continued to preach Jesus day by day. Here we see that a work truly from God may face persecution, yet it can never truly be hindered by human means. Conclusion: A Church Filled with the Holy Spirit A holy and authentic church—not merely outwardly religious. Carrying power and testimony—truly drawing people to Christ. The Gospel will face opposition—yet God’s work knows no bounds. Disciples courageously obey God—following the Lord even at a cost.
